BUT HE HAS NO CHOICE.
HOGARTH MUST FIND THE KILLER AND TAKE ON THE DEADLIEST RISKS…
Murdered kebab shop owner Baba Sen was beloved by his clientele. Sen gave alms to charity, food to the poor and a smile to all of his customers. It seems no one had reason to kill him, yet his murder was brutal and relentless. Hogarth finds elaborate clues and deceptions all around. The motive for Sen’s murder could be the feud between rival Turkish families. But Hogarth senses a greater threat… and when the name of Atacan appears, his worst fears are realised.
The Atacans were notorious criminals, leading a crime syndicate that dominated nineties London, but they were eventually destroyed by the gangs who replaced them. Yet now the Atacan name returns to Hogarth’s life – in the shape of an ex-girlfriend and in the signature found at Baba Sen’s murder. The Atacans were supposed to be dead and buried - but not anymore. Now Hogarth must hope he is the only one caught in the crosshairs…

Southend-on-sea, Just over an hour from London. A tough and densely packed suburban town sandwiched between the sparkling Thames Estuary and a semi-rural hinterland of fields and marshes. A place where wealth and glamour sit cheek-by-jowl with addiction, poverty and crime. When he transferred to the Essex coast, ex-Met Detective Joe Hogarth might have imagined he was signing up for sun, sea and semi-retirement. But the merry hell of Southend might just have him beat. It’s a good thing this DI doesn’t know when to quit…
Hello folks, My name is Solomon Carter, and I am the author of the Roberts and Bradley PI crime thriller series, The Last Line international thriller series, the DI Hogarth Darkest series and more. I write mysteries, crime and thriller novels and more besides.
I was born in Southend, Essex and lived there for most of my life apart from eventful student days in South London. But my life in Southend was even more eventful still. I ended up working in a string of jobs including as a jobcentre clerk, a book seller, tutor for youth with low skills and low self esteem, mortgage broker, and latterly manager of a food bank which dealt with all kinds of interesting people facing all kinds of eye-opening, jaw dropping problems. Because of these ear-to-the-ground jobs the majority of my novels are set in Southend. In 2016 I moved to North Cornwall because I liked the idea of never-ending holidays - but I also write almost every single day. My aim is to write action-packed thrillers and page-turning mysteries that readers love and my hope is to get better at what I do with every book across each and every year.
I like to give away lots of free books as part of what I do. If you would like to receive some of these and get the exclusives on offer, than you're invited to join my free readers group at SolomonCarter.net. What I am good at: telling stories What I am bad at: dancing, being patient. What I love: nature, the seaside, adventures Writers I heartily recommend: Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais. Writers I need to read more of: Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly and others. Other things I do beside writing: at present I like to keep my running going to balance out the sitting behind a laptop (a habit inspired by Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running' - a great book). -I am currently doing surf lessons. When in Rome, as they say... -Getting out into nature as the weather allows.
I look forward to hearing from you. Until then I'll keep on writing. Or running. Or surfing. Or chasing my children around the house.
All the very best, Solomon :)
PS if you have enjoyed any of my books, I'd be honoured if you could post a review. Those reviews really do help!
Another good read albeit once again 2 books counting as just one for my book challenge!!! Strangely enough the first book finished on a cliff hanger that the second book did not pick up on. The Second book also finished like this so it will be interesting to see if book three deals with any of the unresolved issues.
Ex Met Detective Joe Hogarth takes a job at Southend-on-sea. Something went wrong in London and maybe he thought by leaving, he’d get away from his problems and go towards semi retirement, sun, and sea. Wrong. He gets called to a murder at a seaside nightclub, and uncovers a sinister secret. He and his team race against the clock to stop a murderer who watches their every move. And he’s got a secret of his own that threatens his new life.
Book 2: The Secret Fear
Hogarth is called to a brutal murder of a beloved kebab shop owner. The tell-tale mark of a once notorious London crime family is found on the victim’s body. A crime family with a surprising connection to Hogarth. Can he find the killer, keep his team on the right path, and keep his private life private?
I read these books one after the other and it’s the first time in a long time I didn’t regret it. Both were enjoyable. Great writing, vivid scene-setting, lots of action, well-developed characters (even the secondary ones) and edge-of-your-seat storytelling. Hogarth is a tortured soul, but an excellent cop, and a good boss. I enjoyed the glimpses into his own head, and watching him work.
My only quibble, and it’s a small one, is with the organization of the books. The author currently has three overarching series (Darkest Lies; Secret Fear; and Poison Path), and I can’t figure out why the books are grouped like that, or in which order to read them. It makes me a little crazy because I prefer reading in order from start to finish because I like to know everyone’s backstory and what makes them tick. That aside, I thoroughly enjoyed both of these books and will be reading more by Solomon Carter.
I listened to these as individual novels. They are wonderful murder mysteries. Enjoy The Darkest Lies: Another will written British romantic murder mystery thriller adventure novel by Solomon Carter book one ☝ the DI Hogarth Darkest Series about two murders, revenge, blackmail, and drugs. The Secret Fear: Another will written British murder mystery romantic relationship adventure thriller novel by Solomon Carter book one ☝ in the DO Hogarth Secret Fear 😱 Series. DO Hogarth and Jensen are faced with a murder investigation with lots of misdirection and twist and turns leading to the unexpected conclusion. I highly recommend this series and author to 👍 readers of mystery thrillers. Enjoy the adventure of reading 👓 or listening 🎶 to Alexa as I do because of eye issues and damage. 🏡🔰👒🏰 2022
Superbly written mysteries. If you enjoy Police thrillers with so many possible culprits and twists and turns throughout the storyline. You will love these two books. Solomon makes each encounter with Joe Hogarth entertaining, exciting and innovative. Each story has the usual characters, but never ever can you second guess what will happen next. Which makes each book so special.
It's a simple recipe. Take strong characters on the right side of the law. Make sure the villains are suitably obnoxious. Get the Essex regional settings and dialogue accurate, and weave a complex plot to hold it all together. This author delivers the goods yet again.
Two gripping time mysteries is a really true titl e
These two books are 8th about cases dealt with by Southend police. Although the stories are standalone they share the police characters. Hobart is single, grumpy, short of female company and good at his job. He does not notice RD Palmer who nearly has a crush on him. Well worth reading.
I had read both these novels a little while ago. But it was good to read them a second time. Hogarth with his risk taking actions and winding up his DCI. The little hints of romance with Palmer that never amount to anything. Two good stories from a good author. Maybe I will read the others again!
Enjoyed reading both these mysteries, plots were very good and kept you interested all the way through. Would like to thank the author for keep me engaged with the plots.
This was the first two books of a series and although the content of each story was different, both did a great job of establishing the main characters. Exciting, intriguing and gripping.A good example of British crime fiction.
I liked the intricacy of the plot and the characters involved. It is not the easiest read sometimes difficult to keep up with. That said, it is a great story.
Two really good books I enjoyed reading. Grumpy funny. But true to life. He just gets on with it. Didn't expect the ending on second story. But both worth the five stars.
I did not manage to get to the end of the book. I found the language very annoying. I suppose the purpose was to make it feel street-smart, but it is too descriptive, and in a bad way.
Solomon Carter is one of my favourite authors. They are all detective stories based in Southend On Sea. We have Southend Police where Detective Inspector Hogarth is based, and there are stand alone books with him as the central characters. Eva Roberts and Dan Bradley are private Detectives and are the central characters in their own series, although they do sometimes stray into the other books.
I am addicted. Solomon has loads of free adventures for you to dip your toes into, I am sure you will love them as much as me and I can't wait to read your review.
