Viral illnesses confound conventional medicine. Dr. Brownstein’s holistic approach to treat people suffering from viruses has been successfully used for well over 20 years. Supporting and strengthening the immune system can allow the body to fight back when confronted with a viral illness.
"Viral illnesses confound conventional medicine." So says the blurb for David Brownstein's book. It's true that some viral illnesses can be difficult to treat or cure, though effective therapy exists for some viral diseases; for example HAART has had dramatic effects in enabling HIV patients, who once faced a virtually inevitable death sentence, to live long and productive lives.
So what does Dr. Brownstein have to offer that evidence-based medicine can't? Well, lots and lots of vitamins, iodine and ozone for starters. The Federal Trade Commission's warning letter to Brownstein about promoting unsupported therapies to treat or prevent Covid-19 quotes his website's claims.
"My...recommendation is to work with a holistic doctor who can give you nutrient IVs when you become ill. Vitamin C, hydrogen peroxide, and ozone IVs can help anyone suffering from an infection. At my office, The Center for Holistic Medicine, we have seen the positive results a holistic approach to combatting viruses can provide.”
Brownstein's website is quoted as claiming that iodine “is essential to not only fighting off an infection it is necessary for proper immune system functioning. There is no bacteria, virus, parasite or fungus that is known to be resistant to iodine. . . ."
That would be news to infectious disease specialists. If you soaked germs in a bucket of iodine it might well kill them, but taking iodine pills is not a valid way to treat infectious diseases.
One might also wonder what is "holistic" about inhaling hydrogen peroxide, or inserting an intravenous needle in someone's body and infusing hydrogen peroxide or ozone, but apparently if you call it "holistic" that's good enough.
Brownstein endorses nebulized hydrogen peroxide for Covid-19. Not only is that ineffective, it has caused inhalation lung injury. There's really nothing holistic about chemical pneumonitis.
In addition to apparently receiving "conventional" medical training, Dr. Brownstein has been schooled in homeopathy (the practice of treating disease with solutions of herbs and other substances that often have been so highly diluted that no molecule of the supposedly active ingredient remains. The water, you see, has a "memory" of what once was in it. If you believe that, you'll want to avoid regular drinking water because it has a "memory" of entering the sewage treatment plant.
It appears that Dr. Brownstein is also into acupuncture. Unsurprisingly, he preaches against vaccination.
A lot of alternative practitioners like to characterize themselves as "holistic", dealing with the whole person unlike those nasty "allopathic doctors"who just treat symptoms. But there's nothing holistic about quackery.
