About the author

Rafael Sabatini (1875 - 1950) was an Italian/British writer of novels of romance and adventure. At a young age, Rafael was exposed to many languages. By the time he was seventeen, he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth language - English - to his linguistic collection. After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. Sabatini was a prolific writer; he produced a new book approximately every year. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English. " In all, he produced thirty one novels, eight short story collections, six nonfiction books, numerous uncollected short stories, and a play. He is best known for his world-wide bestsellers: The Sea Hawk (1915), Scaramouche (1921), Captain Blood (1922) and Bellarion the Fortunate (1926). Other famous works by Sabatini are The Lion's Skin (1911), The Strolling Saint (1913) and The Snare (1917).

ধর্মীয় এবং নৈতিক উভয় শিক্ষাই আমাদের বলে, হিংসা ও প্রতিশোধস্পৃহা কখনোই কাউকে মাথা উঁচু করে বাঁচতে দেয় না। পরস্পরের ক্ষতি হ‌ওয়া ছাড়া আর কিছু লাভ করা যায় না এতে‌। উপন্যাসে এই দিকগুলো বারবার উঠে এসেছে। সংক্ষেপে এই-ই মূলকথা।

উপন্যাসের নামকরণের যৌক্তিকতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন রয়ে গেছে। নাম শুনে মনে হতে পারে, আগাগোড়া বুঝি মুসলিম সেনাবাহিনীর উপাখ্যান! আদতে ব‌ইয়ে সবচেয়ে বেশি খ্রিষ্টান বাহিনীর জয়ের পাল্লাই ভারি দেখানো হয়েছে। তবে লেখকের লেখনীতে সমতা বজায় রাখার একটা প্রয়াস‌ও দেখতে পাওয়া যায়। হতেও পারে, কাহিনিতে খ্রিষ্টানদের বেশি গুরুত্ব দিয়ে এবং নামকরণে মুসলিম বাহিনীর দ্রাগুতকে ইঙ্গিত করে ভর সমান করার চেষ্টা করেছেন।

ইতিহাস কাটাছেঁড়ায় এই ব‌ইয়ের অনেক তথ্য বিভ্রান্তিকর মনে হতে পারে। তবে ঐতিহাসিক অংশ বাদ দিলে নিছক রোমাঞ্চকর সমুদ্র-উপন্যাস হিসেবে এবং অনুবাদকের সরল-রচনা পাঠককে মুগ্ধ করবে।

قصة رائعة عن الحب والكراهية، السماحة و الإنتقام، الشهامة و النذالة... بدايتها مملة ربما لأنها سرد لتفاصيل أساسية، ثم بعد ذلك تتوالى الأحداث الشيقة إلى اخر الرواية... شكرا رفائييل ساباتيني الرائع! ^^

পনেরো শতকের সময়। জেনোয়া। ক্ষমতায় আছেন প্রসপেরোর বাবা অ্যাণ্টোনিওট্টো। আর ওদিকে প্রসপেরো এসেছে জেনোয়াকে স্বাধীন করতে। পুত্রের কথায় ক্ষমতা ছেড়ে দিল অ্যাণ্টোনিওট্টো। কিন্তু বুঝতে পারল তাদেরকে ধোকা দিয়েছে অ্যাডমিরাল আন্দ্রে ডোরিয়া। প্রান হারালেন আন্টোনিওট্টো। প্রসপেরো শপথ নিল প্রতিশোধ নেওয়ার যে ভাবেই হোক। স্পেনের সম্রাটের ছায়াতলে আশ্রয় নিল প্রসপেরো কিন্তু ভাগ্যের নির্মম পরিহাসে ডোরিয়ার কমান্ডে থাকতে হল তাকে। কিন্তু প্রতিশোধের স্পৃহা তো নেভেনি। ডোরিয়ার শান্তি প্রস্তাব তাই গ্রহন করলেও তা তার কাছে প্রতিশোধ নেওয়ার একটা রাস্তা হিসেবে গন্যই ছিল। কিন্তু সব হিসেব পালটে যায় যখন সে জানতে পারে যার সাথে ডোরিয়ার চুক্তি অনুসারে বিয়ে হচ্ছে সে আর কেউ নয় তারই প্রেমিকা জিয়ান্না। এখন কেমন করে প্রতিশোধ নিবে সে? এমনই এক সময়ে জিয়ান্না সহ এক অভিজানে প্রসপেরো তুর্কির 'সোর্ড অভ ইসলাম' নামে পরিচিত দ্রাগুদের হাতে ধরা পড়ল। উল্লেখ্য যে দ্রাগুত পূর্বে প্রসপেরোর হাতে বন্দি হয়েছিল। জিয়ান্নার দিকে নজর পড়ে দ্রাগুদের। কিভাবে বেঁচে ফিরবে প্রসপেরো?


পাঠপ্রতিক্রিয়াঃ বিশাল কলেবরের বই হলেও পড়তে এতটুকুও খারাপ বা একঘেয়ামি লাগেনি, তবে বই এর নাম করন সোর্ড অভ ইসলাম করার কারন বোধগম্য হল না।

বইয়ের নাম সোর্ড অফ ইসলাম কেন জানিনা। মুসলিম সৈন্য দের চেয়ে ক্রিস্টান দের বীরত্ব গাথাকেই বেশি তুলে ধরা হয়েছে। যারা ইতিহাস জানে তাদের জন্য বইয়ের কিছু ব্যাপার বেশ বিরক্তিকর এবং গ্রহন করার মত নয়। তবে বই পড়লে কিছুটা বোঝা যায় লেখক মুসলিম ক্রিস্টান উভয় পক্ষকেই কৃতিত্ব দিতে চেষ্টা করেছেন। তবে বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রেই ক্রিস্টান দের প্রতি পক্ষপাতিত্ব সহজেই বোঝা যায় এবং এর কারনও সহজেই অনুমান করা যায়। যাই হোক সাবাতিনির লেখা তার সারল্যের জন্য ভালো লাগে। সহজ সুন্দর অনুবাদের জন্য অনুবাদক ধন্যবাদ প্রাপ্য।

والسعي نحو الانتقام ومايجلبه من قتل وتعاسة.
لطالما اعتبرت أن جمال الرواية الكلاسيكية في خلود الافكار والقيم التي تبحثها.
رواية مزيانة برشا وتمثيل جعلك تعيش وسط لاحداث.

অনেকদিন ধরে বইটা পড়ি পড়ি করেও পড়া হচ্ছিল না। অবশেষে পড়া হল জনপ্রিয় লেখক রাফায়েল সাবাতিনির দ্য সোর্ড অভ ইসলাম। বইটা ভালোই যদিও আরো ছোট হলে আমার কাছে বেশি ভালো লাগতো। ঐতিহাসিক থ্রিলার বলা যায় যা যুদ্ধ অ্যাডভেঞ্চার সবকিছুর মিশেলে লেখা। সাইফুল আরেফিন অপুর অনুবাদ বরাবরের মতই সুখপাঠ্য। আমার কাছে বইটা খুব একটা খারাপ লাগেনি আবার খুব একটা ভালোও লাগেনি। লেখকের অন্যান্য বইয়ের তুলনায় এই বইটা একটু নিষ্প্রভ কিন্তু খারাপ তা বলা যাবেনা। সবমিলিয়ে বেশ ভালো একটা সময় কাটলো বইয়ের সাথে।

পনেরো শতকের জেনোয়া। ক্ষমতা দখলের আন্তর্জাতিক রাজনীতি চলছে সেখানে। অস্থির রাজনৈতিক পট পরিবর্তনের বলি হলো প্রসপেরোর বাবা আন্টোনিওট্টো। এজন্য দায়ী এডমিরাল আন্দ্রে ডোরিয়া পিতৃহত্যার প্রতিশোধের শপথ নিলো পুত্র.......
এদিকে স্প্যানিশ সম্রাটের মাথাব্যথার কারণ কারণ হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে তুর্কি নৌবাহিনীর কমান্ডার দ্রাগুত রেইজ। ডোরিয়ার উপরে দায়িত্ব, যেকোন মূল্যে থামাতে হবে তাকে। এদিকে পাকেচক্রে প্রেমিকাসহ প্রসপেরো বন্দী হলো দ্রাগুতের হাতে। নিজের শপথ কি রাখতে পারবে প্রসপেরো?

ব্যক্তিগত অভিমতঃ ইতিহাস আশ্রিত উপন্যাস বা হিস্ট্রিক্যাল ফিকশন সবসময়ই আমার পছন্দের তালিকায় সবার উপরে। আর রাফায়েল সাবাতিনি এই ব্যাপারে একজন শিল্পী! এখানেও তার ব্যতিক্রম ঘটেনি। প্রচুর ঐতিহাসিক রেফারেন্স ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে, তুলে আনা হয়েছে সুলায়মান দ্য ম্যাগনিফিসেন্ট(সুলতান সুলেমান নামে আমরা যাকে বেশি চিনি), খয়ের আদ দীন বারবোসা(পাইরেটস অব দ্য ক্যারিবিয়ান এর বারবোসাই!), দ্রাগুত রেইজ, এডমিরাল জেনারেল আন্দ্রে ডোরিয়াসহ বেশ কিছু প্রসিদ্ধ ঐতিহাসিক চরিত্র! টানটান উত্তেজনায় ভরা প্রায় পৌণে পাঁচশো পেইজের বইটি যেকোন হিস্ট্রিক্যাল ফিকশন ভক্তকে মুগ্ধ করতে বাধ্য।

The mercenary's profession is one of the oldest in the World and certainly the most deplorable. Sabatini's protagonist is a mercenary and once again it is difficult to sympathize with him, something that I feel the reader should be able to do in a tale of adventure.

It is true that Prospero Adorno does consider the welfare of his native Genoa but this does not explain his initial position in the pontifical navy, or his liberality in taking sides in a war due solely to his quarrel with one family.

However, the wealth of historical knowledge displayed by Sabatini and his generally good style of writing save the novel from mediocrity. The adventures of Prospero are also exciting though he is often unrealistically successful in his schemes.

A collection of short stories that showed off Sabatini's range of style. There is the tragic, the scary, the hard edged, and of course the light romantic. In this collection some of the stoires are set in the twentieth century. This is a nice range of stories and sure to be a hit with any Sabatini fan.

"To thourghly avoid evil it is nescessary to be on intimate terms with it,..."

"...the second was the Demon of Perversity, one of the younger children of Pride, an insidious little fiend who keeps you amused by his drolleries what time he digs a pit for your destruction."

One of Sabatini's better attempts at historical fiction. A fun story well told. I liked it (almost) as much as Captain Blood.
