She’s on a mission to reunite with her soul mate. He’s the fool who agreed to help her.
A year ago Claudia was Hollywood’s most sought-after actress, now the only role she can get is a bit part in a tv series filmed in Hawaii. She can’t afford to say no, and Hawaii offers something more than CPR for her career—its the home of her first love, a man she’s been dreaming of for six years.
Henry is the best in the business. The fearless stuntman is used to standing in for the leading man. He’s never wanted to be the star until Claudia saunters onto set wearing the shortest shorts he’s ever seen. Her long legs, killer smile, and biting wit make his heart race like he’s in a speeding car heading straight for a crash. When an unorthodox bet throws them together, he finds himself agreeing to help her track down her long-lost love.
Now he just has to keep himself from doing something stupid, like falling in love with her.
This Retro Hawaiian Romance set in 1968 contains piggy-back rides up Diamond Head Crater, skinny dipping in paradise, and a pair of friends who can’t keep their hands off each other.

(audiobook) Books are already a great form of escapism. But if you can travel through space and time on top of that, it’s a real journey. That’s what happened with this book.
I’m not one for historical romance. But when the era is close enough that I’m more familiar with it, I don’t mind. Here, the story is set in the 60s–not a decade I’ve experienced myself, but I know about it through my parents. So I wasn’t completely lost with some of the finer details. It was still refreshing to read about characters who smoked, and not just tobacco, or mentions of free love. Not the usual context.
The other change of scenery was the setting in Hawaii. The author takes her time to describe the land, the sights, the specificities of the state. It’s exotic, sure, but you also feel the love for the place. It helped that Henry is here to guide Claudia through it, and us at the same time.
Finally, there’s a bit of a behind the scene with a TV production, and stunt direction. It wasn’t too heavy in details, but it was interesting.
All of that shows that the characters don’t live in a bubble. They exist in a place and time that define them, in a sense. They’re more than that–Claudia and her past love stories, Henry and his feeling of inadequacy and his several sisters–but it’s part of them too.
The romance itself was both heartwarming–Henry ends up being an amazing book boyfriend, despite not being handsome, nor a rich or famous man–and sizzling hot. The attraction between Claudia and Henry is huge.
The narration was exquisite. With two extremely talented narrators who convey the sensuality and the emotions of their characters perfectly, the audiobook is a must have.
Quickie
- Series: Aloha #3 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #retro romance #friends to lovers #hawaii - Triggers: mention of a diving incident, stunts, injury - Main couple: Claudia Montgomery & Henry Longchamp - Hotness: 4/5 - Romance: 4/5 - + delicious trip through Hawaii and the 60s - – no need to insist that much that Henry isn’t conventionally attractive
1/13/2021 - This is book 3 in Jill Brashear’s Aloha series. It can definitely be listened to as a stand alone. However, there are small “nods” in this one that I think make the series best listened to in order.
Awe! These two. I admit it took me a little to get over wanting to yell at Claudia, “He’s right in front of you!”… but that’s part of the twists of this unconventional pairing story. Somehow Brashear manages to write a slow burn relationship with seriously sexy times.
There was some repetition in the characters’ internal thoughts. However, I continued to enjoy the details Brashear brings to really immerse the listener into life in the 60s, the atmosphere of Hawaii, and TV show production. Henry’s stuntman scenes were particularly engaging.
Plus, I love a good epilogue and this one was lovely. Happy tears!
Narration: Loved the duo of Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright. Hamilton is a perfect fit for the mostly easy going Henry and I was especially drawn in by Cartwright’s Claudia in the emotionally charged scenes. This was such an easy audio to fall into.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Home Cooked Books and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
1/11/2022 - Audio is currently $1.99 on Chirp. Teddy Hamilton & Mackenzie Cartwright! 💗🎧📚
I love a nostalgic romance that takes place in the 60s/70s. So many references brought back memories of my parents and TV, music, people and just that Era where life was a little more simple and the world wasn't so big. No cell phones, email, internet like we know it now. Hawaii is always a place I've wanted to visit and Jill really left me wanting to book trip after listening to this book.
Claudia and Henry , narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright , were an unlikely pair that saw past what the rest of the world saw. Henry is truly a gentle giant and a big mush underneath that stuntman persona. Claudia is sweet fun loving spirit who puts up walls because of her profession and past. I haven't read any other books in this series but I have a feeling I would enjoy them as much as I did this book.
Some conflict and drama that gets resolved and they get their HEA.
**Audiobook Review** Try Right by Jill Brashear was a fun, flirty, and nostalgic romance that I instantly fell in love with . This was my first book by Jill Brashear and will not be my last. I loved how easy it was to fall in love with Claudia and Henry's strangers to lovers story set in the tropical paradise of Hawaii.
This audiobook is narrated by Mackenize Cartwright and Teddy Hamilton. I loved these two paired together. This story is told in third person. Even though third person is not my favorite, I was still fully engaged and quite consumed in this story. Mackenzie did an amazing job bringing all of Claudia's hopes, ambitions, and desires to life in her performance. Teddy was great with Henry showcasing his loving, charismatic, and vulnerable sides. Claudia and Henry had this instant chemistry that you couldn't help but love.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story and audio. If you love a strangers to lovers story with a strong sexy female movie star, a hunky charismatic stunt man, a 1960s setting in Hawaii, late night walks on the beach, a complicated bet, hot steamy times, and a sweet, satisfying HEA that will leave your heart feelings super happy, then I highly recommend this book! I'm excited to listen to more from Jill Brashear.
I love this series. I love how all the books overlap events wise. Claudia is a strong, independent, empowered 60s woman. She isn't ashamed about being on birth control and is comfortable in her own skin. Readers of the series will recognise her from the other books. She was the tourist who broke Keoni's heart before Try Easy. She was the woman who unintentionally almost ended Declan's relationship before it began in Try Me. She's back in Hawaii to film and reunite with Keoni. A youthful crush that kept her going in low moments. Henry is also known to readers from Try Easy. The cousin who Penny and her friend Lou stayed with during their life-changing visit in Try Easy. He has no idea who Claudia is but he is entranced.
Henry's boss puts him in a lose lose situation. I wish he had come clean, but the build up also worked. Henry and Claudia are a fantastic couple. They challenge each other and complement each other in the best ways. Their chemistry is amazing and I loved reading their relationship develop from friendship to lovers. The car scene. OMG. I'm still holding out hope for Penny & Bones to be reunited! I would have liked to see Claudia meet Lou. In my review of Try Easy I wished for a ticket to Hawaii and a time machine. I'd still take them. Jill has such a talent for crafting strong women who are assertive in and out of the bedroom and don't allow the men in their lives to take over. Her men are often strong and capable, but sweet and kind. They're alpha without the aggression and cocky swagger often seen. If you haven't read Jill Brashear yet, you're missing out.

I was very excited to read this book. Claudia and Henry are side characters in the previous books, and I had questions about who they were as people. I couldn't see how they were going to work as a couple given what I knew. So it was a lot of fun to find out new things and see the two of them interacting with each other. Claudia is a driven career woman trying to be successful in Hollywood in spite of the boys' club. She was on her way up until a sleazeball threw her under the bus. She has realized that she hasn't been happy since her first trip to Hawaii and meeting Keoni. She takes a chance to find him again and see if they can get back together. I liked her independent but not belligerent attitude toward life, and I was very glad to see her get her HEA. Henry stays busy with stunt work and hanging out with friends. When he meets Claudia, he does not recognize her as a celebrity. He is attracted to her vibrancy and starts to fall for her. Then things get complicated. I liked Henry's integrity and tenderness.
Try Right was a fantastic story! I was drawn in from the very beginning and fell in love with both Claudia and Henry. Henry especially tugged on my heartstrings! He was a swoon worthy hero and absolutely deserved to win Claudia's heart. They had fabulous chemistry and I loved the angst between them! It was nice that Claudia was down to earth and didn't act like a starlet. That made it much easier to relate to her. I could feel myself falling for Henry right along with her. I absolutely loved that the story was set in Hawaii. Having grown up there it was fun to read about so many familiar places. Another huge bonus for me was having horses in the story. I couldn't put this book down and had to find out how it all worked out for them. I haven't read many retro type books but it was easy to imagine them in the 60's as it was very well written. Jill Brashear did an excellent job with this story and I would definitely recommend it!!
I was excited to get my hands on this book the moment I saw the cover. I am a sucker for bright and enticing covers that draw me in before I even read the blurb. I have never read anything by Jill Brashear before and I think this was the perfect start for me to experience her writing. This was a fun read and even though it was the third in the Aloha Series I was able to read it with no issues. I will be going back to read the rest now that I have loved this one so much though. This one is set in 1968 in Hawaii and is so beautiful to read. I felt as if I was propped up with my fav drink on the beach watching the adventure unfold before me as the waves crashed on the shore in front of me. The way Brashear describes her scenes really pulls you in and makes you experience everything first hand. I liked the unique spin on a second chance love story. I am so excited to see what will come next!
Try Right by Jill Brashear (The Aloha Series Book 3)
5-stars
This was my first book by this author but it certainly won’t be my last! Having said that I can honestly say that this book can be read as a standalone as I was able to easily follow the storyline. I absolutely loved this story from start to finish and ended up reading it in one sitting as I couldn’t bring myself to stop reading. I loved both the main characters from the start, they were intriguing, witty, charismatic and relatable.
I loved all of the detail that this author wrote with, it was easy to picture everything playing out in my mind which kept me entertained the whole way through. I highly enjoyed all of those little details and I really enjoyed reading the character development, honestly there was not one thing I didn’t love about this book.
I cannot wait to read the rest of this series asap!
This was such a good book that I read it in one sitting. Loved the relationship between Henry and Claudia and that they just engrossed you in their story! This book was filled with adventure, romance, some secrets and perhaps finding something you weren’t originally looking for. This was my first read by Jill Brashear and will definitely read her books again in the future! This can definitely be read as a standalone book; I was able to follow everything without reading the first two of this series. I do wish the characters were a little more relatable with their careers, but their wishes and dreams can be applicable for anyone. Would 100% recommend!
Third installment of the aloha series. With the backdrop of Hawaii, how can a book go wrong. This book is an easy, fun read. If you've read the first two then you know who Claudia and Henry are. This is their story. Will they fall in love? Will lost love get in the way? Even if you haven't read the other two you can read this as a stand alone, but why would you? Jill is a great writer, and you will love her books.
Jill Brashear has written a heartfelt retro romance set in 1968 Hawaii. I felt like I was transported back into that era with Claudia who is trying to reunite with her soulmate. I could almost hear the waves breaking on the surf and feel the heat of the sand on my toes. I wanted so badly for Claudia to have her heart and her career repaired. This is the first of three Aloha Series I have read and I will be sure to read the other two. I am sure you will enjoy this romance story too!
4 star review of Try Right (Aloha #3) by Jill Brashear
AUDIO REVIEW:
Jill Brashear is a new author to me and why that is I have no idea. Narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright I was quickly drawn into Try Right, the third book in the Aloha series. They did justice to the characters and were easy to listen to with voices that are pleasant and engaging.
Claudia, a once well known Hollywood actress is in Hawaii to film a part in a TV series. She wants to use the opportunity to catch up with her first love, Keoni. Henry is a stunt man on the film and from the moment he sets eyes on Claudia, he is immediately attracted to her.
As their friendship develops, lines are crossed. The chemistry between them is intense and it was entertaining to watch them move from friends to lovers. The characters were engaging and easy to relate to and I fell hard and fast for Henry.
Their relationship was rocky but it was fun to watch it play out. This was my first time listening/reading a retro book and I enjoyed it. The writing was descriptive and I could easily envisage being in Hawaii along for the ride with Claudia and Henry.
I loved the characters in this novel. You get very attached to them and feel their passion and love in the pages. When they go angry I could feel it and hear myself thinking "Chill out buddy", the passion ignited on every page. Claudia was trying to hard to force something that shouldnt have been that she almost missed out on what she actually needed. This story is a great example of not always getting what you think you want but there being a greater universe out there pointing you in the direction of something you need in your life. This was a big life lesson book for me, teaching you to see whats in front of you and not always thinking things could be better if only... Claudia and Champ are so perfect, they are opposites attract throughout the whole story but in the end what makes them who they are is very similar and so endearing. This book taught me a few things from "back in the day'' what they did in certain situations that is so different from us now that we kind of forget it ever used to be like that. As well as some history/ knowledge about Hawaii I did not have. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a happily ever after , predictable ending, amazing love story novel.
This is the third installment in a series by this author. I have never read the previous two books or any other books by this writer. I was intrigued by the cover as I am drawn into books about the beach. What I found was a FANTASTIC story that sucked me into the Hawaiian waves from the beginning. I was quite concerned because I hadn’t read the previous books but after reading it I don’t think that’s necessary. I could literally see this story happening before my very eyes that is how vivid the writing and details were. Not only did she tug at my heartstrings, but she took me on an emotion roller coaster ride. I have never been to Hawaii but have always wanted to go. This book has only made that desire increase because I can only imagine how breathtaking it is in person since the scenery in my head was so visually stunning. The characters had great chemistry yet so much turmoil that had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what the conclusion would be. I intend to pick up the previous books to read them as I have fallen in love with this writer. I hope that she will continue their stories.
Try Right (Aloha Series Book 3) by Jill Brashear is the third installment in the Aloha series but is a stand-alone read. If you are a reader who could get lost in a fun, beachy, retro setting, this book is for you. The Hawaiian descriptions pull you out of your chair and into paradise in 1968. Claudia is an actress who lands a small role on a Hawaiian based TV show, and jumps at the chance in order to save her career. Along with finding gainful employment, she is also looking for her long lost first love. When she meets Henry, a stuntman, their paths intertwine and throw them for a loop. These characters are very relatable and it is quite easy to be swept up in the tide along with them. If you happen to find yourself in a “reading rut”, not knowing which book to pick up next, I highly suggest this one. With the lush descriptions and lovable characters, it is a breath of fresh air. It’s a vacation in a book! 5 stars!
I was pulled in from the beginning with Claudia’s surfing lessons, or I should say attempt at surfing. She ended up having a great connection with her trainer. We then jump ahead a few years. Claudia finds herself back in Hawaii and she is determined to find her soulmate and get her career back on track.
Henry is a stuntman that Claudia meets on the set of her new job. When he agrees to help her find her soul mate, they start to grow closer. Will they be able to find him? What will happen when Henry’s secret comes out?
Overall I really enjoyed this book, the characters were great and I really enjoyed this story. If you're looking for a great read that pulls you right in this is the one for you. This is the third book in the Aloha series that can be read as a stand alone, however it does help you get to know the characters a little better. Loved it!
Try Right (Aloha Series book 3) by Jill Brashear - Review by Gail Guerrero
Five stars
This story was sweet and dreamy. Claudia and Henry are dream characters. They give you all the feels and all the romance. While searching for a lost love you would’ve thought Claudia would find a new much more tantalizing love. A love so pure it has the readers falling too. I really loved how the characters were written. You got to bond with Claudia because she didn’t let game go to her head. She was down to earth and real. Henry is a dream. I was ready to be written into this story just to shoot my shot to him. These are the type of male characters that make dating for reads in real life so hard. Are expectations are really high. We want a man with flaws but also goes above and beyond for his woman. Definitely try this author out you won’t be disappointed!
This was such a lovely read. I was completely captivated from beginning to end. I adored the characters and felt lie they were so real and relatable. Claudia and Henry had such a wonderful connection with each other and their chemistry felt so genuine. I loved Henry – full on swoon worthy hero of the story in my opinion! Although this is the third book in the series and the first that I have read from it was easy to read as a standalone however I absolutely will be reading the first two books now! I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author again in the future.
Try Right (Aloha Series book 3) by Jill Brashear - Review by Krista Vaughan
Hawaii is my place! The first time I stepped onto the ground on Oahu I knew I had found my home! The pandemic has kept me away, but this book took me back again! Claudia is a beautiful, romantic leading lady who is looking for her leading man. She hopes to find him when she returns to Hawaii. Henry is a rugged, deep-feeling stuntman on her set that has NO idea that she's a big deal. They meet by chance before finding out they work together. Sparks fly! The electricity between these two is almost visible! Such an important story of love and trust in Paradise.
Try Right, A Friends to Lovers Romance, (Aloha series book 3), by Jill Brashear, was a wonderful book, that caught my interest from the first page. You do not have to read the first two books to become fully involved in the characters and story. This wonderful romance will keep your heart smiling as the main character, Claudia finds her way back to Hawaii following a dream of a great career and lost love. I look forward to reading more books by Jill Brashear as her writing style is delightful to follow and enjoyable to read.
Try Right was my first book in the Aloha series, but I will definitely be going back to read the others! Jill Brashear created a wonderful world set in Hawaii in the 1960s - a very different time and age to today! The attitudes of men towards women amongst other things was well written even if they drove me insane as 21st century woman! The insights into the world of Hollywood/TV shows of the era and especially that of stuntmen like Henry were fascinating! Definitely recommended as a fun, somewhat spicy read!
Try Right (Aloha Series Book 3) by Jill Brashear was a really good read! I enjoyed this period piece set in the '60s. I felt like i was right there in that time period with Claudia and Henry. I was instantly grabbed by this novel as soon as I opened it, from from first page. I also felt like I was right there in Hawaii and I absolutely loved it. I loved these characters and this plot line. I really want to go back and read the first two books that were in this series now. I'm so glad I grabbed this book to read!
Friends to lovers is my favorite romance trope, and this one does not disappoint! I loved the way their relationship evolved as they both discovered they were in love with each other. This series is so fun! If you have read the other two books, you will be delighted to see familiar characters again. I loved Keoni in Book 1, but seeing him from Henry's point of view is an eye opener. I want Book Four with Penny and Bones!!
This book was one I thought I wouldn’t like from the beginning. You really have to catch me with the cover and it didn’t initially grab me. However, I am glad I read it as the story did. I liked the characters a lot. I liked Henry in particular. He really seemed like a likable guy and I found myself rooting for him as I continued to read. There were definitely times I wanted to yell at the characters because I was so into the story. Would definitely recommend it.
I loved the steamy scenes in this book. I fell hard for Claudia and Henry and was rooting for him the entire time. My heart broke when theirs broke. When they were happy I was happy. the small authors notes threw me off for a second. I knew they were there to explain, but i felt like it was unnecessary.
This one was one of my favorites i love the dynamic between Henry and Claudia. I would fall for Henry all day long. Gotta Love a redhead. Claudia is so much more than what everyone thinks of her! This is part of a series but a standalone! Definitely need to read this when you get a chance!
Adorable! I didn't read the previous books in the series, but it wasn't really necessary. I could follow the story in this book alone. Such a cute romance novel. The writing was awesome and I really lost myself in this book. Read this book if you love a good romance story.
Claudia thought she got the life and career she has been dreaming about for years now but then a scandal places her on Hollywood’s blacklist, her options are limited. When a small role is offered to her on a not so well known show, she has to take it. Lucky for her though, it’s filmed in Hawaii and she can use this opportunity to rebuild her career, find herself again, and maybe even find the love of her life she hasn’t been able to stop thinking about since her trip to Hawaii right after high school.
I really enjoyed a good portion of this book and the setting of Hawaii in the 1960s was so much fun. Henry was probably my favorite character in the book but he still let me down at times though he made up for it in the end. My biggest issue and what really prevented me from giving this 4 stars but the misogyny in the book. Yes I 100% understand it provided the conflict for the book and I did enjoy getting the male perspective in this a lot but it pulled me out of the story so quickly with some of the comments from the male characters. I appreciated though that the author really tried to balance it out with things like having the Feminine Mystique laying around in Claudia’s dressing room or the comments around her struggling to deal with men using her to get ahead and how the same action can positively impact a man’s career while harming a woman’s. Overall I think this was a really fun book, especially for summer, and I could get behind the romance. Would definitely consider giving the other books in the series a try (which i believe are all stand alones but all located in Hawaii?).
Try Right was my first book by Jill Brashear and I absolutely loved it. This nostalgic romance was completely engrossing and I was captivated by the story and characters. Claudia and Henry’s unexpected romance was flirty and sexy and full of heartfelt emotion.
I loved Henry. He was such a great guy with a huge heart. He was fun and laid back, but he also had a serious and protective side that was undeniably sexy. He made mistakes, but he owned up to them. His support of Claudia and determination to protect her showed how much of a sweetheart he was.
Claudia was a little tougher to love at first. She was determined to push Henry away and I just wanted her to open her eyes to what was in front of her rather than always looking to the past. When she does finally “see” Henry, I loved how it softened her character and made her more relatable. She was a strong, independent woman who knew what she wanted and was determined to get it which was unusual for that particular era.
Teddy Hamilton and Mackenzie Cartwright narrated the audiobook and they were superb. The banter and chemistry between these two characters was delightful and electric and the narrators brought that dynamic to life. I was immersed in the story thanks to the narrators. I felt every single emotion. They were perfection.
I would highly recommend this beautiful and emotional historical romance. This was the third book in this series and I now need to go back and read the first two. I think I’ve found a new author!
