One day in 1915, magic returned to the world, and the next, everyone still showed up for work. In the very museum that started it all, Betty Stanton is trying her best to keep things together, even though the collection she oversees is now under the watchful eye of people hungry for power.
With time working against her, the government at her heels and even the press at the door, can one woman protect artifacts that are suddenly the most dangerous weapons in the war against Germany?
This short story is set between books one and two, and features Betty, Charlie's friend at the museum, who has to deal with an unexpected magical artifact and it's equally unexpected side effects, a gaggle of government goons and an irritating reporter. In the process, she even discovers something about herself she hadn't previously considered. I liked that there was humor in this one, and how Betty figured out how to use her situation to her advantage.
A secondary character from the first book in the series, The Magic Box, has a run-in with a magical artifact of an unusual nature -- and learns something unexpected about themself in the process. A nice, satisfying, sometimes amusing short read.
