This was definitely a different kind of apocalypse book. The action alone keeps you gripped until the end. How will this all turn out. I am ready for the next book to see how things work out.

There are some not uncommon elements in the story. A brooding, loner ex-military estranged from his family, brother who is really a vile psychopathic survivalist. The troubled FBI agent is a bit different and I must say she can really handle herself when it counts. Overall, the writing is good, though there was a typo "liableLi". I was also puzzled by the spelling Alleghany in Pennsylvania—the counties in Virginia and Maryland are spelled "Alleghany" but according the internet and my hardcopy Rand-McNally, the National Forest and river in PA is "Allegheny". I would assume the other spelling is probably also correct? I always have to have a character to cheer and in this book it is Lucas. I am also curious that there is allusion that the EMP origin may be related to Chase and his group feeling good that they had prepared so well. On to book 2.

What a scary premise!

It's hard to imagine the affects of an EMP on our country. We are so plugged in that pulling the plug is quite a scary thought. I'm not a fan of the lead character Kari. I doubt she could have passed the psychological quals for the FB I. She is a very loose cannon. The other characters are quite interesting and it will be fun to see how the story continues.

Very entertaining

The writer has weaved a most interesting storyline with intriguing characters. Kari is an FBI agent currently on administrative leave due to her investigation of a dozen missing young women. She is wallowing in self pity because her difficult years growing up and she has become dependent on heroine. Lucas is retired military and brother to Chase, the man Kari suspects is behind the disappearance of the women.

Good Story New, Different , Plot

I like the new take on an EMP story. Strong characters, some may be broken and/or with secrets. Strong female characters. Chapters floating back and fourth through time, takes some getting use to. Personally, not a fan of this style. Action moves along fairly well. The camp is a new element. The brothers are both interesting, even if they are polar opposites. The plot is interesting and captures your interest from the first chapter.

I was looking for a similar read to another series by this author and found this one. While the apocalyptic events begin at the beginning of the book, this one is much more about the FBI agent’s back story. It also focuses on one other main character and his current story, but it’s literally only two or three days into the EMP event. It is just moving much slower than I expected and wanted with each page turn.

Excellent 1st book in the start of this series by Justin Bell and Mike Kraus

An EMP hits and within a couple of days the country is going on a downward spiral. Not knowing how far reaching the power outage is makes for a dangerous time. A helicopter goes down and everyone is dead except for a FBI agent on the trail of a survivalist camp in Pennsylvania.

Another great book to read by Justin Bell. I enjoyed the story as it was different in many ways. A cop that takes drugs and is put in the middle of Mt. Ranges. Not telling which ones or where. Keep giving us great plots in the rest of the story in the series.

Same ol, same ol…

Every book this guy writes follows the same formula. World goes to hell, good guy with problems takes down psychopathic killers. Blah, blah, blah. The entire story could be condensed in to one book and it would still be boring.

This is the first in a new series that is off to a great start. The characters have various defects that adds to the way they deal with the happening in the story.

Tough Read

Bell and Kraus make superior authors. The stories they concoct resonate of today's news and a possible horrifying future, or tomorrow.
