Shannon Toliver, hacker extraordinaire with the PAVAD division of the FBI, loves her position with one of the best FBI teams in the nation, loves her new city, and loves the people she works with.
She won’t change a single thing about her job.
Well, almost anything. There is always that thorn in her side, Agent Ezra Hahn.
Now PAVAD is in trouble. And it is up to Shannon to fix it.
Someone has hired a killer to target the FBI, and that killer is going to start with the people Shannon loves.
Or Shannon herself.
★ SHE DRIVES HIM INSANE, WITH JUST A SMILE. ★
Ezra knows that Shannon is the last woman he needs in his life. The woman drives him crazy and makes him burn simultaneously. In more ways than one.
They can’t even be in the same room together without shooting flames off each other.
It is best to just stay far away from that temptation, before she makes him do something he’d regret.
But when they are abducted by masked gunmen, Ezra can't exactly do that. It's now up to him to keep her safe.
Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).
Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?
In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!
Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.
She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.
She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.
They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.
Shannon Toliver and Ezra Hahn have been verbal sparing buddies for a few novels in this series now. It is finally their turn to fall for each other even though that isn't what either one wants.
Shannon wants a stable man, one who is home for dinner even when she isn't. She wants stability in her crazy life as a PAVAD hacker. Ezra knows she is under his skin but he doesn't want a relationship either. At least not until they are kidnapped and held hostage together for 3 days and he does everything in his power to protect her.
Someone has a grudge against the FBI and the PAVAD division. No one is safe and a sniper is on the loose, one that knows Ezra too well and has his own axe to kind stemming from the past. The sniper sets his sights on Shannon and no one is safe.
Shannon is a little bit of a thing but she is a fierce warrior and stubborn as the day is long. She is perfect for Ezra who is much the same as her in that respect. He is determined and loyal and protective of those he cares about and whether she wants to be or not, he will protect her to his dying day.
This was a faced paced story with some familiar faces and we get to learn more about the Joneses, Max and Jac. This story is ongoing in that the threat against the agency has not been found.
This is what I have come to expect from Ms. Brookes, fast paced action and two heroes who find their way toward each other even when they fight against it. I can't wait for the next books, Max and Jac's story. I am eager to learn more about them and the threat to FBI and PAVAD.
This was almost a DNF for me, and the only reason I tried to power through was because I've read every other one in the series. This was 100 pages too long, the excessive number of chapters from Chas's perspective was distracting, and the errors continued to drive me insane. Ezra and Shannon themselves weren't all that bad, but I couldn't get past the other issues with this book. They're kidnapped right at the beginning, which is a great start, but then the remainder of the book is about a completely different issue. Their abductors are never tied to the individual with a grudge against the FBI, and it felt like a wasted storyline.
The characters in this one also couldn't communicate and see patterns to save their lives. They missed obvious clues and looked like idiots nearly the entire book.
Regarding Chas: if the author mentioned how he felt invisible one more time, I was going to scream. Every time he was on the page, a sentence along the lines of "he felt invisible" would follow. Not only did the author make that point by telling the reader instead of showing it (describing a nondescript appearance, for example), she told us repeatedly.
Only sheer stubbornness got me through this one, and by the time things got interesting with a quarter left, I didn't care anymore.

I have been fascinated by Ms. Brookes' PAVAD series from the very beginning. The characters/agents, cases, the suspense, the profiles--they're all very interesting. I'm almost always looking forward to the next level in the series. With that being said, I still have to comment on editing/proofreading. Although this one was much better than the earlier books in the series, there was a lot of redundancy in conversations all throughout the book with so many of the characters that were just a bit frustrating and unnecessary; especially close to the end between the hero and heroine. I was like, “didn’t they already go over all that?!” I wish these stories were edited/proofread better because the plots are really good.
OMG I feel as though so much has happened in this book that I’m not sure where to start! Main focus of the story is obviously on Ezra and Shannon but does focus somewhat on Jac and Max - who I bet we will see later down the track! Ezra has been working with REY and Shannon with the FBI’s CCUnit. When they are both abducted outside Smokey’s it sets off a chain of events which none of them could’ve seen coming! In an attempt to save Ez and Shan, Max calls in Jac’s Sister Nat which causes Jacs to lose her trust in him.
Loved this newest story and I absolutely can’t wait for more and to find out if PAVAD is being targeted or if it’s bigger than that:)
Wow! Calle J Brookes gave us so much information about a threat to PAVAD and possibly the rest of the FBI that it left me SEEKING more in the next book! This book followed Ezra Hahn and Shannon Tolliver as they slowly moved from people who rubbed each other the wrong way to finding the one who would always stand by them. It is a wonderful mix of action and romance and I can’t wait for the next book!
Love the characters, the storyline. This series is exceptional. The author shows an insight into each story she writes. I have read the first book in the series and each book is better in that each book has a different story and the characters come from different back grounds. I would recommend this series and can't wait for the next book. ***** Five stars of
I enjoyed reading this book however I would have like more detail lovemaking. The writing flowed easily and and the characters were well developed and compelling. I also liked that there were strong, powerful and brave women as well ad men. Overall I think you will not be disappointed by selecting this book.
Each book seems to outdo the last one. I know some will question the violence these books cover, but trust me, this is the norm and not the exception. Calle J. Brookes can weave a story that that will make you happy knowing the an organization such as the FBI really exists.
Begins a new story Arc. Minor characters become features leads. A strong plot. First of 3 stories. The second will be later this year. The next will be in 2019. Good story, good characters.
I watched for this book for over a year and couldn't wait to start it! I enjoyed the previous books in this series and expected the same with this one but I guess the author is getting bored with this series.
Shannon Toliver is kidnapped with Ezra Hahn in front of Smokies a local police hangout. They are moved to the boondocks and she is pressured to give the crooks access to the database for their FBI unit.
I've read every book in this series, and love them. They're definitely suspenseful, and thrilling, as well as romantic. And I love anything with that combination. I can't wait till the next two PAVAD books come out.
Criminal minds plus CSI plus great romantic suspense all rolled into one. This interconnected series is full of plot twists and turns that keep you flipping the pages! Highly recommend!
Great book, although I wanted Shannon to stop being a ninny where Ezra was concerned. Still, it was a great mystery and I can't wait to see how it continues in books 16 and 17.
All of Callie Jay Brooks books in the FBI, Finley and other parts are all terrific books that expand and make character expand and grow while adding new people each time. I can’t wait for the next two books
