Someone has targeted the PAVAD Division of the FBI.
Sinclair Lorcan came to St. Louis temporarily for two reasons--find a deadly traitor in the division where both his brothers work, and reconnect with those brothers for his young son's sake. His son needs his family. But first, he has to catch a traitor.Signs point to someone in the Automotive Forensics department. The department his brother's ex-wife runs.
★ THE WOMAN SIN JUST CAN'T FORGET. ★
Merrick Cody has her hands full running the AF department at PAVAD and juggling the needs of her newly adopted five-year-old daughter. She barely has time to sleep now, as it is.
She doesn't have time to help her ex-husband's jerk of a brother with anything. Finding a traitor is the last thing Cody wants to be involved in now. She's dealt with one before--and almost died because of it.
Sin makes it clear she doesn't have much choice. A traitor in her department means danger for everyone she cares about. She may not be able to stand Sin--but isn't it better to deal with the devil she knows, rather than the demon she doesn't?
She'll survive this fire. And then Sin will go back to wherever he came from...
Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).
Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?
In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!
Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.
She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.
She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.
They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.
Sin Lorcan's relationship with Merrick Cody has long been plagued by jealousy, spite and frustration. Merrick marrying his brother didn't help - and surprisingly neither did her divorcing him. Moving back to St Louis with his newly discovered son, hasn't improved much but when Sin's investigation into a PAVAD traitor threatens Merrick, he finds himself stepping up for her and her adopted daughter.
I've pretty much given up on remembering or following who's who in PAVAD. There are too many characters with too many detailed backstories and I just can't keep them straight. But I do enjoy the setting of the PAVAD offices and the supportive environment they all foster. I will say though was it really necessary to name three brothers, Sin, Seth and Sebastian?
Sin Lorcan was a frustrating one. Although he was clearly trying as parent and boyfriend, I felt he lacked in both departments. His kid was all too often an afterthought and it irritated me. As for Merrick, well his reasons for hating her were ridiculous. Talk about emotionally stunted. I liked that he recognised he was ridiculous but it wasn't enough.
Merrick was alright. She seemed like a no nonsense character with her head screwed on straight and most of her priorities in order. I vaguely remember her in previous books, although I don't particularly remember how she gets the daughter. I liked her love for her daughter and her importance on being a mother to her. She generally made good decisions and kept herself safe and I liked that. On the other hand she was also kind of bland. I'm not really into second chance romances or the whole falling for the other sibling thing, so this was never going to be a high rating from me, but i did come to like both of them more than I expected. If there had of been more interaction between Sin and the kids I think I would've liked it better.
The romance between them was sweet, even if it lacked fire. The storyline had a few plot holes but moved fast and worked hard to build suspense. I would've liked more actual investigating but the viewpoints of the criminals helped to build the story and make the case and that was sufficient. If there were clues in previous books I missed them. There did seem to be hints for future books though about the bigger traitor, unless I missed something else - which is also possible.
An average light crime romance with a close-knit community and extended family whether by blood, marriage or friendship. 2 stars.
Burning is book ten in the PAVAD: FBI - Prevention & Analysis of Violent Acts Division by Calle J. Brookes. Sinclair Lorcan and his three-year-old son Tyler moved to the St Louis office of PAVAD to be closer to his brothers and find the traitor inside the forensic lab. However, the head of the forensic lab is his brother's ex-wife, Merrick Cody, the love of his life and the person he needs to help him find the traitor. When someone tried to hurt Merrick, Sinclair forgot about his brother and only cared about Merrick's safety. The readers of Burning will continue to follow Sinclair to discover what happens.
Burning is another excellent addition to this fantastic series by Calle J. Brookes. I engaged with this book as soon as I opened the first page. I love Calle J. Brooks's portrayal of her characters and how they interact throughout this book. Burning is well-written and researched by Calle J. Brookes. I like Calle J. Brookes's description of the settings of Burning, which allows me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of Burning will understand the consequences of revenge on everyone involved. Also, the readers of Burning will understand how trauma can affect children who experience domestic violence.
I started this series a few days ago and have not stopped. I like everything about PAVAD. The people make the books come alive and they are a true cast of characters. I do think that there are several typos and missed auto correct opportunities which makes the sentences sometimes hard to follow but that is a proof readers job. The stories are wonderful and engaging. I will finish reading all of this series for sure. Thanks Calle for the gift of PAVAD!
Ms Brookes always had great stories but more and more she's been putting in rhetorical question: at least one per page. They've become quite annoying. But looking passed that she's an excellent story teller.
Again, filling this out later, and can't remember details. But I didn't really like the main characters in this one, and what I can remember of the story was weak.
I love this series and Sinclair "Sin" Lorcan has been in love with Merrick Cody since he realized she was a full grown woman but before he could act on it, she had married his brother Sebastian instead. He stayed away from her, antagonizing her just as he had when they were kids. His family had always been close to her but he kept her at arms length after his father died. He was jealous of what she still had.
Sin was brought in by Ed Dennis to ferret out a traitor. His skill as known far and wide and once this case is over, he vows to leave. He has his son and that's all he needs.
Merrick or Cody as most of her friends and co-workers call her has a daughter to think of. Her daughter has been traumatized and still suffers from night terrors among other things. She isn't ready for Sin when he knocks on her door looking for her help to find the traitor in her department.
These two have hot chemistry and it shows but both are reluctant to act upon it for different reasons. But as the case heats up and Cody becomes the focus of the traitor, Sin will do anything to protect her.
She is strong and independent but deep down she is vulnerable. She is beautiful and he is handsome as all of the characters in the series are. He is strong and silent and not very approachable. They can help each other if they will just let the other in.
Good story and it was a fast read that was full of action. I am sure the mystery will continue on as perhaps there is more than on traitor to ferret out in the department.
I have been curious about Sin since he first appeared in this series. The more I learned about him through being in his head in this story, the more I understood him and felt for him. He was misunderstood by everyone, especially Cody, though his brothers understood more than he thought. He had been in love with Cody for years, even before she married his brother. Now, Cody seems to be a target, and Sin will do anything to make certain she is not hurt despite her avoidance of him.
I loved how the relationship develops between this couple and their kids. I also enjoyed all the other familiar PAVAD characters. As I think I've mentioned in previous reviews of books in this series, the author has an unusual writing style. She tends to use way too many introspective questions for me, but I deal with it since I truly do like the characters.
"Burning," is Cody and Sin's story. It is also the story of traitors within and outside of PAVAD that want to do the directorate and the director harm. Sin had been tasked to find these individuals. In the process, Merrick Cody finds herself stuck in the middle of these individuals. On top of that, Sin seems to be everywhere. She has no time to deal with Sin and the past and finding the traitor in her unit. But some events happen anyway. Some people don't simply go away.
An interesting novel that is engaging. I didn't find this one to be as good as most of the others, but it is still enjoyable and worth the read.
I love the series and I was excited that a book about Sin and Cody was going to be released. It did not disappoint, but I would have loved if the author had given a little glimpse of their future to see how their family dynamic was doing. But overall I loved the book, and I loved the ending.
