I essentially power read through this book in one night. Overall, I found it helpful when it comes to explaining positive reinforcement training and in solving problems with dog behaviour.
As I am new to training a dog, I found the explanation of each training elements to be quite helpful. That said, I did not find the layout to be helpful as there lacked a sense of cohesion. As a first timer, this book left me a bit high and dry when it comes to knowing where to start. Thankfully, I am using the Power of Positive Dog Training as a companion and they make up for each other's deficiencies.
This volume has helpful information for new puppies, house training and crate training. It provide excellent information on these elements that was lacking in other books. In addition, there is extensive information on understanding a dog's mood and behaviour.
This provide much practical information and plenty of positive methods to shape and reinforce behaviour in your dog. Coupled with a rough training schedule and from The Power of Positive Dog Training, I feel as if I have the comfort to start the process.
I found this guide very helpful with training myself and my puppy. The basic philosophy was clear and concise and worked through in each level of our training so it has become an every day, every moment act.
Read it. Because we got a dog! So I will need a lot of this information. Full of useful info and pictures of gorgeous puppies and grown dogs. Very repetitive, but I think dog owners need to be trained much like dogs: lots of repetition. Let's hope I can correctly implement some of the training!
I felt this was really repetitive. And I don't think I want to do clicker training and am unsure how many treats I want to do. Nice to have the info though.
This book was really well organized and easy to read. The focus of this book is more on training adult dogs and my current focus is puppies. Might be something to come back to in the future.
This book dealt with non-puppy issues as well, ie senior and adolescent dogs. But overall, this book was great. I read the parts that were relevant to me and my new puppy: how to clicker train (even though I never liked it but my current training is not working out the best), addressing the current problems (chewing, housetraining, nipping/bite inhibition, etc). There are great sections for when he gets older and to teach him tricks, for example, which I can focus on when I have the pup where I want him to be. I will definitely revisit this book later.
I originally started reading this as a library ebook and ended up buying a copy to have on hand because I thought it would be a good resource. I feel like the information is practical and easy to follow. Most of the training in this does incorporate clickers, but if that’s not your thing (it’s not really mine) you can find a different way to mark a behavior. I have always used verbal cues. The pictures are great and I think it’s simple enough that if my kids pick it up they will be able to understand and use the information as well.
