“The Forgotten Papyrus”, a story of ancient Egypt and Nubia, the traders of desert and their inevitable company of desert raids.
“The Forgotten Papyrus” is the fifth book of the “Mysteries of Ancient Egypt” Series authored by Nathaniel Burns. This book is written in the backdrop of a time during the rule of mighty Pharaoh Ramses-II (1279-1294 BC), who ruled Egypt from his capital at Pi-Ramesses.
The prefect’s of Pharaoh, Neti-Kerty and Shabaka is sent on a mission by Ramses to Nubia to investigate the delay in Nubian tillage coming to the Pharaoh from trader Dragi. Both arrives in Sylene, which is ruled by the King of Nubia and Shabaka is actually his son. Shabaka and Neti are no longer only co-worker but they love each other and is in a relationship which Shabaka need to disclose to his parents.
Dragi is a well-known, successful and respected trader in Sylene. As Shabaka and Neti arrives, they first encounter a young woman Aya who was about to commit suicide by throwing herself to the crocodiles of Nile at night. As Shabaka rescues her and brings her to his palace, they discover that she is Dragi’s second wife and from her they know the story of Dragi and his present sick condition. As Aya unfolds her story they learn that Dragi comes in contact with a future teller Menwi who is the husband of her servant Huya. Menwi predicts several desert raids on the business caravans of Dragi. He also predicts an attempt on the life of Dragi which was planned by his first wife Nikare. Dragi is able to catch Nikare’s conspiracy and hands her over to the law and her son Rameke stays with Dragi and becomes his successor to his successful business. With prediction from Menwi, the business of Dragi flourishes but one day the worst prediction is made by Menwi, he predicts the day and the way of death of Dragi. Dragi and Aya convinced by the predictive power of Menwi thinks of this prediction as unavoidable. Dragi is a few days becomes a living dead thinking about his coming and inevitable death.
As this stage Shabaka and Neti steps in the life of Dragi, Aya and Rameke, and as Pharaoh’s Prefect tries their best to prevent this death. Now they also know why the Nubian tillage of Pharaoh is delayed. Shabaka puts guards at every step of the massive house of Dragi to protect his life from a huge beast as predicted by Menwi. But Dragi knows his death is inevitable and as the predicted day comes he makes every preparation to bid farewell to life, he writes his will to his scribe that after his death his young wife Aya will go to unmarried Prince Shabaka as his wife instead of the Nubian tradition as per which his son Rameke should marry her. On the predicted evening of death, Dragi takes his last supper and goes for a walk to his garden along with Shabaka, Neti, guards and servants and collapses on the ways due to a heart attack.
After Dragi’s death his son Rameke inherits his property and claims Aya, but Shabaka refuses due to the will of Dragi and takes her to the Palace, which infuriates Rameke. The story ends where Neti takes farewell from Shabaka and starts her return to Thebes with a guard but on the way her caravan becomes victim to a desert raid in which everyone is killed, and she is taken hostage by Rameke.
I really enjoy this series, both the historical settings and the main characters. That said I find numerous editing errors. When reading for pleasure it is disturbing to have to read a passage several times in order to make sense of the passage. I will continue to read the rest of the series, my review is meant to hopefully alert someone who can fix the problem.
If you are fascinated by ancient Egypt, theses novels wind with interesting characters attempting to solve different mysteries in ancient Egypt. They are certainly worth purchasing and reading all ten books in the series
