Port Chatham, Alaska was once a busy fishing village. By 1950, every single resident had left the town, leaving it abandoned. Over the years, legends told that the residents fled because they were being terrorized by a Bigfoot-like creature the local natives called Nantiinaq. Stories of mutilated bodies, missing hunters and strange, otherworldly creatures have long been associated with Port Chatham. Retired police investigator, Larry Baxter, delves into the real-life mystery of Port Chatham and chronicles his research for the truth into one of Alaska's most infamous legends.
This was a fascinating account of the history of Port Chatham Alaska, which was known for "hairy man" sightings. The author participated in several expeditions and conducted research. Very enjoyable and entertaining book. I subscribed to his informative podcast. I look forward to more books from him.
As a trained anthropologist I have always been interested in people and cultures and some of the folklore found in these cultures. I find it especially interesting that there are tales of large creatures that have names like Sasquatch, Bigfoot, and Yeti. This author has presented some compelling stories on a possible type of Bigfoot on the Lens Peninsula of Alaska. There are also two documentaries filmed about this area. This book is worth a look.
I had never heard of this place in Alaska till now. I found this book very well written and very fair in your findings and conclusions. I hope you write more on the subject and look forward too seeing what else you write!
Baxter has given us an amazing peek into the history of one of Alaska's biggest mysteries . He details the sightings, both historical and his own in the Port Chatham area. A solid piece of reporting.
This is a fine addition to the cryptid book library that I seem to be building. While nothing is ever really documented, it is still quite interesting and I felt nothing was made up just to make the story better.
Fantastic look into the mind and story of a man searching for the mystery of The Alaskan Bigfoot, Nantiinaq. Short read but informative about the history of the town, the horrors, the tales, the myth, monster and self.
Interesting with some fascinating historical facts but why horror was put in the title I have no idea. The story is not an exciting page turner but is well written. The photos are a plus.
I've always been intrigued about the Portlock / Port Chatham area in Alaska. Mr. Baxter has been there twice and has done his research in the area. I appreciated his narrative of his experience and interviews of the people in this area. I'm looking forward to his next exploration into this rarely ventured land.
