In Draw Manga Style , artist and online art educator Scott Harris shows you the key principles of drawing anime and manga —starting with the fundamentals, then illustrating how to create a wide variety of characters—by following his easy step-by-step tutorials . Whether you’re just beginning to draw, trying your hand at manga for the first time, or looking for ideas and guidance for bringing your own characters to life, Draw Manga Style is your go-to guide and visual reference .
I’m going to start this off by saying I draw manga art, I’ve been doing it the past 4-5 years. I’m in no way an expert. But I do know manga art pretty well.
That aside. So. I did not read this book. BUT. This book came into work recently (I work at a library) and as I was shelving, I flipped through the majority of it.
I can say for certain I would never recommend this book to anyone who wanted to learn how to draw manga.
I was surprised by how amateur it looked. The anatomy was terrible, if I’m being honest. It just doesn’t look like the artist knew what he was doing and does NOT look like he flipped his canvas enough. 💀 (I swear, most of the people’s faces should’ve been moved. Why are their faces flying away!!)
Do I think someone could learn from this book, despite the mistakes? Sure. In fact, yeah, I’m positive it could help people. I myself started my artist journey with a manga How To book that looking back on, man, I wouldn’t have used it now. And that’s okay. Imperfect How To books CAN help baby artists find foundation.
I just think new artists should find other resources besides this. Find the kind of content you want to make and study it! Find multiple people to learn from! Don’t just stick to How To books!
According to the author on his Instagram page, @artofscottharris, this book claims to "teach you how to draw manga in the most professional way."
Let's put that to the test.
After having seen some of the interior artwork featured on Harris' Instagram, I was indeed "blown away," but not in the way the author intended. I was "blown away" by how amateurish the manga drawings were and how unlike real professional manga art is rendered.
The right image is what professional manga looks like, and then there's Harris'. This book will not get you to that level - you should find a resource that does. If a manga instruction course does not get your manga looking like that level, you are wasting your time.
I gave this book 2 stars because although it claims to teach a "strong foundation in drawing," if that foundation doesn't get your manga looking like the example, I say you're wasting your time and money.
However if you are okay with your manga art looking amateurish, then sure, get this book, but the serious manga artist/student should look elsewhere.
Draw Manga Style is a tutorial and style guide for beginning artists for drawing anime and manga figures by Scott Harris. Released 14th Dec 2021 by Quarto on their Quarry imprint, it's 128 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.
This a fun and accessible tutorial guide aimed at beginners to slightly more advanced readers and usable for all-ages. The author has an engaging and encouraging style of teaching and writes clearly and enthusiastically. I love that he says that the way that he saw improvement was simply by practicing and refusing to give up! The book includes an abbreviated introduction with a primer on forms and elements, followed by very general anime anatomy and physiological features and how to progress from rough sketch through the refining process.
The book's tutorial chapters include step by step tutorials for different characters focusing on facial features, character personalities, and step by step simple line drawings for producing an outline sketch.
This would make a good choice for public or school library acquisition, home use, or gift giving (perhaps bundled with some basic drawing supplies). It's a very simple and abbreviated guide but there's a lot of good basic information here.
Four stars.

All of the draw manga books I have read so far are so breathtakingly executed and this book was no different. When reading the manga books, I could not help but think that it takes real talent to draw these characters and develop these books. No wonder they are so popular. We are looking to expand our Manga collection plus we have a lot of young minds in the community that spark a huge interest in drawing and creating their own manga. When they see these books and try them for themselves, they are so amazed at what they created that they always find space in their homes and even at the library. This book I know will circulate very well in our collection.
We will consider adding this title to our Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
I am absolute beginner to drawing Manga Style and this provided lots of information. Even though the book introduces to basic structure and shapes and how to draw each part, I found it a bit difficult as a newbie to follow. If you already draw a bit of manga or not absolute newbie to drawing like me, this is a great book.
