EXPERT Paul Denniston is the founder of Grief Yoga, a program he created with David Kessler (co-author of On Grief and Grieving ) and tours worldwide, working with bereavement groups, cancer support centers, addiction and Alzheimer's groups, and individuals dealing with any kind of loss.
NOT JUST FOR Paul's audience is mostly made up of people who had never thought of yoga as a way to work through grieving. This practice is not as much about physical flexibility as it is about emotional liberation.
GREAT RESOURCE FOR HEALTHCARE Paul has taught this practice to thousands of therapists, counselors, and healthcare professionals around the world.
A NEW TOOL FOR ALL TYPES OF Paul teaches these exercises to workshops dealing with all kinds of loss, including breakups, divorce, betrayal, bereavement, cancer, addiction, suicide, Alzheimer's, and more. This book can help with new and old losses and traumatic experiences that often go unattended.
Paul Denniston's book is the best! I've read several yoga books but I connect with this one the most. Practicing several poses each night became a meaningful way to process my own experiences of grief and literally move through "stuck" places. No yoga mastery is needed, either - the photos provide an easy guide for readers to follow along and see at a glance what looks most helpful on a given day. I would recommend this book for anyone who has experienced some form of loss or trauma.
Wonderful compassionate share on moving through grieving a loss and how to move emotions through and out of the body with gentle yoga poses. The best part no yoga experience is required, and all movements are easily done on a chair.
Not quite a 4 - maybe 3.75. Had some great material. Some things I’ve already used in some of my yoga classes. He did say restorative yoga was the same as yin yoga - they are not the same and have totally different purposes. So, I had a hard time trusting some of the info after that. Overall, some great points and practices. My students loved the woodchop!
Denniston wrote clearly and in a heartfelt manner. As a yoga instructor myself, I feel inspired to practice the sequences and poses he suggests as I process my own grief. One day, I hope to incorporate Denniston's suggestions into classes I share with others. Excellent book!
The power of Yoga to support us in difficult times is explored by Paul in this book and the offer of mediations to support those in bereavement is helpful. As an adjunct to his 'Grief Yoga' training it is immensely helpful. As a stand alone it doesn't work quite so well for me, but nevertheless a solid toolkit of techniques and guidance for those of us struggling with grief.
