Batman may be the biggest name in Gotham City, but there are lots of other heroes-and villains-who will get a turn to shine in Batman: Urban Legends, a brand-new monthly series tying into the biggest events in Gotham City. The series begins with these can’t-miss tales: • Superstar writer Chip Zdarsky enters the world of Gotham City with celebrated Detective Comics and DC Future State: Robin Eternal artist Eddy Barrows for a six-part story chronicling Red Hood’s investigation of a new drug sweeping through Gotham. It’s a night that will change his life forever-and put him in Batman’s crosshairs. • Writer of the DC Future State “Grifters” story Matthew Rosenberg picks up where he left off, continuing from the pages of Batman #101! Superstar artist Ryan Benjamin joins the team as we learn why Cole Cash is in Gotham in a tale that hints at what Halo might be...and we also get Batman vs. Grifter-round two! • New Harley Quinn writer Stephanie Phillips and DC Future State: The Next Batman artist Laura Braga join forces for a Harley tale set just before the launch of her new series. Harley’s determined to sort out her history with Poison Ivy-but first, she’ll have to find her! • Coming off the DC Future State “Outsiders” tale, writer Brandon Thomas begins a three-part saga reuniting Black Lightning, Katana, and Metamorpho. But this reunion quickly turns into a confrontation with a figure from Katana’s past, in a story drawn by fan-favorite artist Max Dunbar (Champions, Dungeons and Dragons, Judge Dredd)!
Chip Zdarsky is a Canadian comic book artist and journalist. He was born Steve Murray but is known by his fan base as Chip Zdarsky, and occasionally Todd Diamond. He writes and illustrates an advice column called Extremely Bad Advice for the Canadian national newspaper National Post's The Ampersand, their pop culture section's online edition. He is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops.
So we have the editor's note to say Scarecrow is dead, but then who's running around in Batman #106? And Batman won't work with Jason because "he's a killer," so he completely forgot about Jason aiding him in Joker War? The Harley/Ivy thing just feels more forced with each story it's written into. As with the Outsiders trio... Jefferson just gave Rex a lobotomy? And I really had no interest in the Grifter story so I skimmed to the end. Nice to see Nora Fries is still out and about. Or, was I guess I should say. Overall, art was great, stories were not.
The first two stories alone are worth the price of admission and get this 5 stars.
In reverse order.
Grifter - this was a step down and a bit of a disappointment compared to the Grifter stories I really enjoyed from Future State. Not terrible by any means though and I do like that it is suspenseful without being convoluted or confusing.
Outsiders - absolutely love the art. Probably my favorite throughout the issue. Because of the short length the story it felt a little rushed but was intriguing and still pretty good.
Harley Quinn - beautiful depiction of her relationship with Poison Ivy both in words and images.
Red Hood & Batman - similarly powerful character driven story to Harley Quinn's but with more action. Great stuff.
alfred acting as bruce’s conscience and pointing out the obvious to noooo avail for the thousandth time. but that’s what keeps it fun… ^.^ love jason! the rest were bleh.
The Red Hood comic and the Harley Quinn comic were my favorites in particular, I loved the angst. The Grifter was quipy which I enjoyed, however I felt The Outsiders fell flat, largely because it felt rushed
2,5/5. I pick this one essentially for the Red Hood story (and seriously what is it with the comic world and short stories collection at the moment!!??). It was a really good one, darker, like I like my DC's to be, but also the only one really worth it in my opinion so I can't give a really good rating to this issues in general...
I'm so happy I decided to start this series!! I thought this was really good. Anthology books are always risky because the stories can go from hits to misses so fast, I actually think everything in this was really solid.
Red Hood: 4/5 This was a great Jason Todd story and a good start to a four part story. I always love when DC explores the relationship between Jason and Bruce and the exploration of that here was solid. I also loved seeing Jason torn between doing right and wrong, the ending of this part of the story really hit. Ugh, I love Jason.
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy: 5/5 I'm sorry but I'm just a sucker for Harley and Ivy. They are just so cute and I love their relationship so much. This one really hit me in the feels. I'm always down for a cute Harley and Ivy moment and this one gave us a lot of those. It also hit in the feels really hard. AND ANY THROW BACK TO THAT ICONIC HARLEY LOOK IS APPRECIATED. Her most recent look is really great too, she looks so cute. This was a nice little story and a nice setup for what might be explored in the new ongoing Harley book (on my way to catch up on that asap btw).
Outsiders: 3.5/5 Okay so this one could be rated higher if it was longer. I realllly like the story this is setting up, it seems like it could be really fun but it was way too short for me to say I loved it. The art was really great though and the ending was super fun. I love Black Lightning, Katana, and Metamorpho so I'm really interested to see how this one will play out in the next installments.
Grifter: 4/5 I was actually not a big Grifter fan before the Future State story but I think he is really growing on me. I had a blast reading this story and Grifter gives a few good laughs. His fight scene with Batman was just really superb. The action sequences and dialogue in that scene were all just spot on and so fun. I'm super interested to see where this story is leading but I'm sad to see the death of Nora Fries. Poor girl.
"Red Hood and Batman": I don't have much experience with Jason Todd stories. I loved this one. Outside of action not being as easy to follow as it could be, I thought it also looked exceptionally good.
"New Roots": I generally like these characters both apart and together, but something about how they're portrayed here both visually and in the writing felt a little off to me. I feel a little bad having that be my main takeaway, but it all just rang a little false. And... I dunno, if a creative work is itself asking "is this too on-the-nose?", then it probably is, right?
"The Caretaker" does nothing for me. I'm just not familiar with these characters and it's not a compelling entry point.
Not even a surprise appearance by Nightwing could make me like "The Long Con". Just didn't enjoy the tone for the majority of its page count.
Cheer (1 of 6): Great atmosphere and set-up for what looks to be an emotional arc for Jason.
New Roots: Really just a brief glimpse into Harley's psyche. Nothing particularly special, but not bad and flows well.
The Caretaker (1 of 3): Very little of substance. Reads like a genuine waste of space. Drags the book down.
The Long Con (1 of 5): An interesting start with solid action and panelling.

Urban Legends #1 is a fine enough read, but it's essentially reading the beginning of four different stories that go nowhere save for Cheer. Four stories per book might honestly be too much, especially if it just results in fodder like The Caretaker that ultimately has no time to flesh itself out.
To be honest, I know little about Grifter so I can’t really comment on that. However, the rest I’m familiar with. Including flashbacks (of which I’m usually not a fan) in the Red Hood story was such a good idea because it added something more both visually and in terms of the pace. I also can’t help getting all giddy when there’s Oracle. Harley and Ivy, I’m so excited to read more about. And we got a kiss on the continuity? Hell yes. Moreover, Phillips and Braga made a great team. And I thoroughly enjoyed the Outsiders. Jefferson and Tatsu are who I most enjoy seeing working together.

All of these stories were really good, none of them wrap up. It's like buying a book that is really the opening two chapters of five other books. Now, maybe I'm just too impatient and all will be finished in time as the title continues. That's fair, but man, that's a lot of unfinished plot threads in one purchase.
It was nice! The Harley and Ivy story was what I bought this for, but the other parts were nice to see too. The Red Hood story stuck out to me quite a bit so I’m interested to see what the future comics plan to do with him. I wish they didn’t push so many comics in one book because I felt a little overwhelmed by all the content.
I'm just rating the Jason story for my video. Trying to remember it all is hard over the years. But, re-reading it, damn, this is good. Jason is far more compassionate here than normal. What's more, he's still dealing with his father issues and Bruce. But the part with the lost boy and the ending really make this a worthwhile read.
Red Hood 4/5 Harley Quinn 1/5 Outsiders 1/5 Grifter 1/5
The Zdarsky story is solid, the other 3 are borderline unreadable. Couldn’t give an elevator pitch on any of them. I won’t be picking up the second issue, the quality control is shocking.
Red Hood: 4.25 🌟 (promising start!) Harley Quinn: 2.5 🌟 (feel like I'm missing something?) Outsiders: 1 🌟 (wasn't really anything at all, story or character-wise) Grifter: 3.5 🌟 (so excited for a grifter storyline!!)
