I am literally, in tears right now. I feel numb. I just finished reading my ARC, provided by the author for my honest review. This is quite honestly my favorite Indie author series. Hands down, the best. There are many, MANY talented indie authors, whose books leave an imprint on my heart. If you ever doubt an indie, read this series!
My gosh, the first book roped me in and had my heart fully committed to this series. This second installment has my heart bleeding. Frost does such a phenomenal job of bringing the characters to life and giving them souls that you are instantly attached to or that you will instantly loathe. She writes so many layers to these characters. I am attached and broken after this book and it ended in such a way, my heart cannot take the suspense. The author is very smart ending it the way she did, but for this readers heart, it feels so cruel.
Enough about how empty I feel right now. Let's talk characters. Bennick is still my favorite character and he still make me blush and gives me those silly little butterflies. I love how much he loves Clare and I hope at the end of this series the two of them find their happily ever after! I adore these two characters.
Venn, Wild and Vera are still some of the best side characters who you always root for and worry about!
Also, this second book in the series has brought forth many other characters who I am fully invested in. Grayson was one who my heart was wrapped around in book one. In this second book I am even more invested in him. He is such a strong character! The hurt he has gone through makes it easy to see why he is the way he is and how Mia means so much to him, as she is the one light in his life. When Grayson tells Mia that she is always with him because she is the best part of him, my heart smiled. We also get to know Grayson's brother's Tyrell and Liam a bit more in this book. In life, there are children who get mistreated and never know love. These Kaelin brothers shine a light on child abuse and what it does to kids. It also shows that who you are raised to be and how you are treated does not define who you are. You get a choice. You CAN rise above it. You CAN be better than your past. Tyrell seemed to be a soul that just couldn't be saved, then Mia is added to his life. This relationship has me feeling all sorts of feelings. To see someone who has never felt love begin to have a light shine through their dark is such a heart swelling thing to witness. I see heartbreak coming and I honestly have no ides how it will happen, but I believe Grayson, Tyrell and Mia are in for a ride and I know no matter what happens, I am going to feel some sadness. I just want to wrap my arms around them all and am both excited and fearful to see how things work out.
We see more hurt in Liam as well this time around and we learn how he, like Grayson , refuses to think like his parents. He refuses to let evil take over his soul. I loved how these two brothers grew a bit closer because being close to their siblings was something they were never allowed to have. It may be late in the game for them, but watching a relationship develop between them had my heart soaring.
Then there is Desfan, the Mortisian Prince who is Serene's betrothed. I love him. He in no way wants the role he has been thrust into, but his sense of duty for his country and the best way to serve them pushes those feelings aside. He still can't help but get himself into trouble, but it's another part of him that makes you just fall in love with him. He is who he is and it makes him so endearing. I can't wait for Serene to finally meet him. I am curious how that will go. I do think they are very well suited for each other and have the same dreams. I just can't wait for so much!
There are also losses in this book, which I won't mention, you'll have to read. These losses gave my heart quite a few tugs. I felt for the characters experiencing the loss. My heart soared to see the loveless feel loved.
I could keep going and going, but the point of all this is, Heather Frost is a force to be reckoned with! The way she spins tales and leaves little trails of hints that once you get to the AH-HA moment you are mid boggled with how she came up with it. This isn't anything like Harry Potter, but I often found myself thinking, She tells stories in the same way Rowling does. So many twists, turns and puzzle pieces, it truly makes Frost one of my favorite authors!
Now, about book three... can I get a rush? My heart can't take the ending!
