With the day I've had in the book reading department this book is top tier material.

It wasn't bad, the FMC and MMC didn't suck so that was a plus. The plot is intriguing as well so I look forward to the next book.

In short, I have read worse books and it seems I read all of them this week , this was the only good one. Make of it what you will.

3.5.

The premise of this drew me in and it started off quite well. However, it too quickly fell I to the RH world of cheesy relationships and it just put me off.

I do think this book is a bit of a 'it's not you it's me', however, and there is nothing wrong with it and it's a decent read. I have just read so much RH that the only books on the genre I really enjoy anymore are those that have a bit more substance to them.

My issues are two fold and personal one rather than anything bad about the books itself. The relationships were too fast burn for me, not in the physical stuff, as this only happens with tow out of the five, but in the speed in which they are all enamoured of one another. It just puts me off a book and I feel somewhat cheated. They just met and do not know each other, yet she's all they care about yada yada yada. My interest just goes, I'm afraid.

Secondly, the female MC is just a bit too Miss Perfect Pants for me. I prefer darker, edgier, morally grey characters who are not perfect, so I wasn't massively engaged in her, either.

If you love RH and want a decent read then definitely guve this a try and it's a decent book, just not too my personal tastes, unfortunately.

Sometimes the stars align .... this book was a random pick, so random, I only choose it bc I liked the cover art. I didn’t read the premise nor was I familiar with the author. A serendipitous choice indeed.
The author does an impressive job weaving the plot together. She reveals information about the h’s past without annoying flashbacks, or info dumps. The mystery is unraveled with just enough clues to lead you ensuring you arrive at the proper conclusions without making it OBVIOUSLY predictable. The characters have depth & although I found it difficult to keep track of each H’s species they had clear & distinguished personalities. The h was strong, smart, & kick ass without having the typical pitfalls. I enjoy snark but prefer a cunning h every time. As for the RH relationship, the author did away with the angst & games. In a change of pace the author went with emotional honesty & clear communication straight away. The characters are honest in that they feel an attraction but they don’t devolve into sexual encounters or instantly become in love. Can you imagine? No? Well you don’t have to imagine pick up the book & read it for yourself. I’d highly recommend the book for it’s unique avoidance of the typical tropes alone. Luckily the story was entertaining & well written.

This book was a refreshing change of pace. 5 🔥 stars

I look forward to book 2 in this series. Hopefully I don’t have to wait long.

Only okay. Wtf with all the 5 stars?

I got this because of the astronomical rating. While it was an okay story, I struggled to the end. It lacks emotional depth and the FMC is the Mariest of all the Mary Sues. If she’s so super duper powerful, why need help at all? Her super awesome powers school everyone around her. It got tedious.

The Rowan is the first book in the fantasy RH series, The Killian Blades, by Stella Brie.

This book had potential, no one can discredit that. The premise was sound. The synopsis alluded a very interesting concept, that I for one was excited to discover. But, alas, it did not deliver.

There’s no emotion IN THE WRITING. Stella Brie lists these emotions on page as if they are trivial facts. The book drones on inflicting you with sloughing through this painful, stifled (lack of) prose. Honestly, if I didn’t truly wish to decipher the characters, I would’ve given up and just DNF’d from the first chapter. It was a disaster from the beginning.

The only portion of this work, that makes up (slightly) for the rest, is the character development. I enjoyed discovering the backgrounds for the cadre. Exploring the suspense and mystery that is Arden’s life and destiny. But there’s not even a hint into who or what is behind her life of seclusion and fear. Maybe it’s the Elves? Or this ‘Prime’ character?

But Arden and the group also don’t live up to common sense. They’re five of the most powerful supernatural beings and they can’t run a nightclub/sanctuary without being able to focus on their true purpose? I was envisioning these all-powerful, suave, cunning men. But they let me down, full stop. Arden is unbelievably naive, ignorant, and terribly portrayed if the author wasn’t trying to make her seem like a complete dunce!

The plot is nonexistent really. The pace is ridiculously hectic, while still being glacially slow. Everything, especially related to all other supernatural factions outside of the cadre, is base contrived bull****.

AND DON’tT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE ANNOYINGLY NONEXISTENT BACKGROUND ON THE KILLIAN BLADES. THE SERIES IS FREAKING NAMED AFTER THEM!!!!! Why is there only one short and concise paragraph related to their origin!?!?! (***screams in frustration for eternity****)

Blah. Don’t read.

Spoilers ahead

My thoughts on all 3 books

Eleventy billion words to tell a story that could've been told in a couple million
Relationships that seem more secondary than anything else
No real connection felt between the fmc and any of the members
A whole lot of putting stuff off just to drag the story on
Twenty billion side characters that made it hard to keep track of everyone. It seems a few of these characters get their own story told
ANTICLIMACTIC ending!!!!! Ffs the lead up to what was supposed to be an epic showdown but was such a let down
Fmc wasn't bad but if she made a mental note about something one more time I'd have lost my mind

The only thing that interested me at the end was the possibility of Vargas coming back. If they get their own book (singular) I'll read it but if their story is told in the other books I'll make up my own HEA, no way I can go through this again

In book 1 up until part of book 2 one of the men has a girlfriend
No relationships in book 1
Once they get involved no one else
LACKLUSTER SEX (grrrrrrrrr)

I would term this a set up if you will.

The world build was a slow burn. In the beginning it was a little bland, followed by a steady ramp up of intrigue, and suspense. The world Brie built is interesting and original. Never felt as if I had read this before, which is quite refreshing when it comes to PNR. However, I did feel the speed of the book was a little on the slow side.

Loved the family Arden has "adopted". Beautiful relationships are displayed with care and pull at your heart strings. There was not a strong romantic pull for me. The MCs are interesting, but I don't feel connected to them and I don't feel the overwhelming pull you usually have in PRN. I did miss the heat which led me to rate this lower.

I am looking forward to book 2, but I need some steam! I will be picking this series back up at a later date.

Happy reading,

I was so excited as I started reading this book.
1) It had a smoother flow and felt like the writing had improved since the contemporary release I had read by this
author
2) While there's some general attraction/acknowledgment that the characters are attractive, there seemed to be no insta-love. I'm okay with a fast-burn physical relationships, but I hate it when feelings are rushed.
3) One of the men asks our FMC why she can't just do what he told her, and she replies, "Because I'm not a child!" Which seems silly, but once I found out how old the FMC was, I NEEDED to see that she wouldn't just meekly do what she's told. Too often, the powerful woman in the story still somehow ends up being unable to make her own decisions or defend herself, and I was really in the mood to not see that same outcome playing out again.

I genuinely enjoyed the characters and that we're getting a world dynamic and twists on the supe species that helps make Brie's work into her own. That's really important for me as a reader in the sea of paranormal and urban fantasy RH reads out there- I like having unique little aspects that I can pin in my memory to help me keep track of a series.

Now, my issue came after something big happened to the FMC. Until that point, I felt like the relationships were progressing naturally, there was good tension building, and each dynamic had just the right amount of push and pull. But after this big thing happened to her, it felt like we skipped some steps. The increase in emotions, attachment, and the connection between the FMC and the men just felt like it sped up to me without enough to get me to vibe with our new destination. Now, we still don't immediately jump to LOVE, but it really just gave me that nose wrinkle moment where I was thrown out of how I was enjoying the story.

That being said, I was also into this story for the plot- the secrets that the coven is hiding, who our FMC's father is and what that makes her, and to see how the other species react once some of the coven's dirty laundry comes to light. SO, I will be reading book two for the story, but I will also be hoping that the relationships sort of settle back into what feels more believable for me.

With this one, I am not sure. There is a lot of world building so if you like that this one is for you. I see all the five star reviews and I don't get it. It was nice, okay, average, but I am not sure about the 5 stars. Hey this is all my opinion. You may disagree! Reading is subjective and all that jazz.

I feel that maybe some of the reviews are ARCs, but today many reviewers are not honest and do not state that their format was provided as an ARC. However, I can tell when some reviews are given because they are simply trying to support the author, because the review sounds very scripted, they all use the same verbiage, same detail, but not too much detail, and the reviewers provide only what they loved, not what needed work. I can believe the "love" of a book in some cases. I have read books that I have given 5 stars and have read 100 times, and some readers hated the book. I know where there were weaknesses (i.e. grammar, flow, etc.) even in the books I have loved and given 5 stars simply because I loved the story. If I fall in love with the characters and story, I can overlook the grammar and other issues so I understand. However, there were too many reviews will just description of the plot with no depth or explanation for the 5 star reviews. Hence, why I am very leery of these reviews.

The heroine, Arden, is very likable. She is smart and kind. She is a witch who is searching to find out exactly who she is and where she came from. She seeks the help from the cadre which are 5 men all who come from different "backgrounds" you can say.

I liked that this was not love at first sight. I like that the heroine is not throwing herself at this attractive men.

The heroes are okay. We get everyone's POV. So if you like that this one is for you as well.
There are a lot of characters in this one...vampires, witches, fae, lion shifters, demons, dragons, elves, etc.

I think the flow of the writing did not pull me as much as I would have liked. This is not one series I will continue. Reading is subjective. You may love this one.

- No emotional depth
- Lot's of telling not showing
- Can't connect with FMC who was just another Mary Sue
-MMCs were fine. Not too terrible but their characters lacked depth
-No conflicts or high stakes. Everything just felt monotonous.
I can't even say this is an ok read.

I liked the book. It was a bit confusing at the beginning, because it’s not clear where this is heading. So many secrets to uncover. But I enjoyed that it was a quick read and all the different characters from different races where well done.

I loved this story. This was a really great beginning to a new series. Arden is a badass FMC, that takes no shit from anybody. There was zero wishy-washy moments of indecision, she is powerful and trained and knows exactly what needs to be done. She has many enemies and as the story moves along, the list of enemies gets longer. But, she has some excellent allies and potential mates for her harem of men. The book is written in multiple POV's, which I love so we get some great peeks into the guys minds. Backstories are provided little by little so we are not given a huge information dump. The plot moves along at great pace with action throughout.
I also really appreciate the fact that the relationships with her 5 men are developing in different stages. This may be spoiler-ish, but by the end if the book, there is barely any interaction with 1, strictly friends with another, interest shown by a third, some sexy times with a 4th and full on with the last. IMO this provides a lot of depth to the story, even though they are all definitely drawn to her, and she to them.

This is my favorite type of paranormal story and this book definitely delivers on every point I love.
Absolutely recommend!

Exciting and Captivating!

4.5 Stars!!

I think this is my very favorite series of 2021. I’m enjoying it so much. This is at least my second read through, and I still have fun reading it.

This story is about Arden, she’s a powerful and immortal witch who is searching for her heritage, her destiny, and her father. In her quest, full of assassins and death threats, mystery and intrigue, she seeks help from the Cadre. The Cadre is an immortal group of warriors who provide a sanctuary for supernatural people of any race. There is Theron, a fae Lord; Valerion, the King of Dragons; Astor, half incubus and half warlock; Fallon, Prince of the light elves; Daire, Prince of the underworld, son of Lucifer, and First Vampire. These guys help her and are all inexplicably drawn to Arden. The six of them are all searching for answers together, but the going is rough.

This book is so much fun to read! I love that the plot isn’t obvious, and the bad guys are a secret. I have no idea what is going to happen. I can guess who her mates are at least. I love that Arden is NOT a poor, weak, fainting, crying female. She is a powerful witch, and a strong warrior in her own right. She is an adult, and she ACTS LIKE IT! I can’t tell you what a relief that is. I’ve read too many book where powerful and ancient immortals act like immature, hormonal teenagers.

I just love this series! I’m anxiously waiting for the third book to come out, hence rereading the series. You should read it too!

I really wanted to like this. The FMC, Arden, is badass and a fighter. I like that. My issue here are the men, I just didn't feel anything for them, not really. And there were some big turn offs for me.
1- Valerian's love for Moira. She wasn't his mate and she's been dead for over a thousand years I guess, and he still loves her. He has a picture of her is his nightstand (which I suppose was still there when he and Arden were getting frisky).
2- There's an incubus and I'm not a fan.
3- One of the guys has a girlfriend and she (guess what) becomes a problem. I imagine she will appear again later on with her petty revenge.
4-I really don't like it when the characters are all badass, infamous warriors, and yet they don't get rid of potential treats. Solange should have been offed for what she did. Yet, Daire allowed her to walk. What a wuss.
5-Poor Fallon never shows up and Theron is just... Meh.

I don't know if I'm going to continue. I want to find out more about Arden's past and all the mystery. Beyond that, the romance is very flat for me. I think Arden doesn't even feel attracted to Daire... Or Fallon.

The Rowan

great read! I really love what I read so far, the storyline is wonderful and the writing skills are Amazing. I personally love strong women in my books, and arden is strong, level headed, smart, cunning and all around an amazing character. The men is this read are intriguing, and I really appreciated the pace in which some become lovers in this book but not all. I hate forced relationship writing, and although we can tell who the potential love interest are, it's not rushed and was done very tastefully. There is so much going on in this book, with many characters, and lots of mystery, not all is revealed, but the book unravels still at a steady pace with enough information being given at all the right moments. I am really excited to see where this all goes in the end. Great new series.

What an original and fascinating story!
I really loved this one and it was a page turner.
A beautifully written world with interesting and complex characters that make you want more about them and at the same time you want to hang with them and be with them.
It was interesting and honest and fresh....
It was different but good different.
The author did really good and i can't wait to read the next one.

Arden is an immortal witch. After living in a secluded area for 300 years, it's finally arrived the moment for her to go look for Lord Theron as her mother foresaw when she was born. Lord Theron and his cadre accept to help her figuring out her past, as Arden might be the key to avoid the witches' extinction.

This book wasn't what I expected. It started out good, but the more I read the more disappointed I got. All of the characters accept what is happening too easily. Arden lied about who she is? Sure, no problem. Oh, and she suddenly has feelings for five guys? Where is the attraction? It's not shown in the book.

Really enjoyable, a great first book. The fmc Arden was down to earth and had confidence that i liked and also had good manners which is not that usual. And the fact that she at least was 328 years old when the guys where over 1000 years or even over 2000 years old made me like the book more. the author could have made her much much younger like a lot of other fmc is even if the guy/s are ancient
I am looking forward to the next one, to get to know everyone more and to maybe get to know who Arden´s father is.

I really liked this one. All the characters are great. There’s slight OW drama but I mind that less in reverse harem books. The h didn’t care much for the heroes at that point other than finding them attractive so I let go.

Good overall world building and characters. For some reason I thought this series was done but it isn’t and now I have to wait for the next book which is disappointing.

Spoilers for the OW drama!

One for the H has a girlfriend for part of the book and another is still kinda in love with his dead ex.

DNF at 59%

The emotional aspect in this book is lacking. The characters appear to be pretty flat and there is almost no chemistry between them. This is probably the reason why I don't really care about the characters.

The story could be interesting because it has some intriguing aspects but the execution is lacking in my opinion.

Reread October 10th 2021.

Alright I was still slightly confused when I reread this one as I couldn’t quite remember what happened and based on my review I didn’t add a lot of details. Luckily enough I took notes this time because I truly felt like there was a huge giant cast and trying to keep track of everyone was confusing. So I’ll explain everyone mostly and my thoughts overall.

Characters

I do feel like we skipped some important parts in the plot/story. Like her getting to know the guys and slowly forming bonds and relationships. It’s definitely not a slow burn, but also I dislike that some of these events take place off page. A great example around after the harem starts getting together at the 73% mark Arden has a night with Astor and rather than be there with them, experience their intense connection, conversation and intimacy we are missing it all and reminiscing the very next morning. It really sounded like this particular moment brought them together or settled Arden more and because of that I would have liked to see it played out further on page. To see how they are connecting. I see some connections but not to the level at which Arden is though. So I wish that was a bit more clear.

Overall I did enjoy the reread, I did remember some things and somethings I did not. So it was a great time overall.

Great start to a new series!

Great start to a new series! Not too bad, not a whole host of information drop either. I was able to be lead to the facts, the interesting thing is how old Arden is bc she doesn’t feel as old as she is. I like her though, and I enjoy what’s happening in this book. Arden asks Theron to protect her, it’s an interesting world they live in. She’s got assassins after her, hence the protection. But there’s more, she’s uber powerful, but she’s hiding it. She doesn’t know all her ancestry and hasn’t grown with witches which makes the whole story more fascinating bc she has to deal with the prejudice that witches get, and seemingly rightly deserve. I can’t wait to see how this goes and what that random vision will be.

Also I feel like Meri may end up being a issue later? Maybe?

New to me author. Loved what I read in this first book. Told in multiple POV's, which not only helped us get to know the characters, but also gave pieces of the story line bit-by-bit.

I thought that the pace, world building, story telling were all great. AND more importantly, for a RH story, I'm glad this wasn't just about sex with multiple partners. It has a well thought out storyline with thoughtful character development.

Moving on to book 2!

This is one of those books that has more layers than details, while each facet is dropped with aplomb, though there are a few that sneak through with careless abandon. I enjoyed it, but it did speed through a few steps in the relationship building process, not to mention scant world building that leaves the reader floundering while trying to understand the underlying plot.

It's fast, very hot and more than a bit confusing. There are pieces in play that won't become apparent till later installments, at least I am hoping they do. By the end, the picture is a bit clearer - but it is still so dang FAST! Not short of pages, but quick on events. Maybe that is the point?

All over, it is interesting and worth reading - I am going to be following and hope things even out in book 2, because this base plot? It's fantastic!!

Perspective:
First Person, Multiple POV

Ending Type:
Cliffhanger

Rating:
Adult

Romantic Dynamic:
FMMMMM

Character Age Range:

My Final Verdict on The Rowan

Fast, magical and rather intriguing, this is a high octane adventure that serves as an introduction and foundation to what promises to be a compelling tale.

2.5 ⭐️

This series had/has so much potential, but ultimately was a let down.

I think my biggest gripe is how formal and stilted all of the conversations were. It never felt “real” to me, it felt like every time Arden or one of the others spoke I was reading a formal essay instead. There was no real emotion, at least none that was apparent to me.

I finished simply because I hoped the writing / conversation style would grow on me but, alas, it did not.

Second biggest gripe- very hectic pacing & at times it got confusing. I found myself flipping back a page thinking I skipped something when I actually didn’t. The Killian Blades (the series namesake) were mentioned maybe three times? And all I know about them are 1) they can kill anyone / anything 2) there are three of them and 3) Arden has them all? Aside from that, literally nothing is explained about them. Are they important?! Do they serve a purpose? If Arden has all 3, why doesn’t she wield them? So many questions.

It was an okay read but I personally won’t be continuing the series past the 2nd book.

Excellent read!

Good
1) The storytelling was professional level
2) The world-building was fleshed out within the story
3) The setting were well-done without overpowering the story
4) The series arc was clearly established and has a compelling mystery
5) The plot-driven storyline was intriguing and had a beginning, middle and end
6) The action scenes were clear and suspenseful
7) The female lead was smart, strong and tough but had an open, loving heart
8) The male leads all had their own personalities, voices and stories
9) The male leads were all strong and protective but didn't try to control and dominate the female lead
10) The romance-driven storylines were graceful and subtle
11) The secondary characters had their own personalities and it was consistently reflected in their behavior and voices
12) No insta-love
13) Sex positive

Bad
1) The obligatory 'mean girl/jealous girls' and were obvious, one-dimensional and cliche

I really wish I could get this mass market paperback as it is a definite reread.

I’m sorry, but what is up with all these 4-5 star reviews? I feel mislead. The whole premise seemed promising, but it falls flat..hard.

This was an incredibly, massively disappointing read; zero background on these so-called Killian Blades(..and the bloody series is named after them!), they’re almost mentioned from the get go with no elaboration whatsoever.

I could hardly get past the first chapter, the writing(and prose) is abominably juvenile and some of the characters seem awfully immature for some 1000+ year old immortals.
..and what - pardon my French - the fuck is up with this ‘Coyote Ugly’ meets ‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘Step Up’ trope? I had moments of toe-cringing secondhand embarrassment from some of these character’s interactions.
