Zhou Haohui's Death Notice is the first book in a trilogy - it is China's best selling crime trilogy to date.
WOW!!! An instant addition to my favourite's shelf, this book is outstanding. Been on my TBR for such a long time that when I finally got around to reading it I couldn't even remember adding it.
If you wish to visualize what sort of read this is then envision a Chinese version of the movie Seven. This book contains so many twist and turns and false starts that your head will spin. Guaranteed to have you guessing a dozen different culprits as the plot plays out.
Eighteen years ago a bombing killed two police officers, the crime remains unsolved. Nineteen years ago the police successfully completed a raid netting China's largest-ever drug bust. Sergeant Zheng Haoming was involved with both cases, one result brought him pride and accolades. The other, has left him haunted for nearly two decades.
A killer calling himself Eumenides has re-surfaced and Haoming instantly recognises the signature of the killer he thought dormant. But why Eumenides? Why name yourself after a play written by the great Greek playwright Aeschylus? And has this killer changed, somehow become emboldened after all these years? Why does he now choose to taunt the police and risk everything?
This book will take you to an ending you never expected and make you hungry for the second part of the trilogy. However, what pleases me most, is that this book ENDS a big chapter in the saga. Although it obviously leads on to future dealings, the ending here is clean and wraps things up. You are not left frustrated that the book feels like one massive volume split in three and things are just ABOUT to happen. I truly could not recommend this higher to anyone that loves tight, well-written crime fiction.

พล็อตเว่อร์วังอลังการมากกก มันส์มากกก สนุกมากกกกก
เวลาอ่านเรื่องที่พล็อตใหญ่ๆ สิ่งที่กลัวอยู่เสมอคือกลัวนักเขียนเขียนไม่ถึง(ไม่ถึงใจเรา) แล้วตกม้าตาย แต่เล่มนี้คือไปสุด ไปให้สุดได้อีก ทำให้เราอ่านเรื่องราวเว่อร์ๆได้สนุกไม่ตะขิดตะขวงใจ ไม่จับผิด อุ๊ยยย ลำเอียง
เรื่องนี้พระเอกก็เก่ง คนร้ายก็เก่ง แน่อยู่แล้วสิเพราะทั้งคู่คืออัจฉริยะที่เลือกจะอยู่ขั้วตรงข้ามกัน แม้พระเอกจะเพลี่ยงพล้ำไปก่อน แต่สุดท้ายคงจบที่ ‘ธรรมะชนะอธรรม’ ยังอ่านไม่จบห้าเล่มนะ เดาเอา
ใครชอบแนวๆ criminal minds น่าจะชอบเล่มนี้ด้วย สำบัดสำนวนเล่มนี้ก็ไม่ธรรมดา พล็อตก็เดายาก หักมุมแล้ว หักมุมอีก วางไม่ลงเลยแหละ

More suited as a screen adaptation than as a book. Indeed, it had been made into a web tv serial and as of now season 3 is in the works.

So basically, some self-proclaimed harbinger of justice going by the codename Eumenides (aka the Furies from Greek mythology) saw themselves fit to mete out death as punishment to criminals who had escaped through cracks in the legal system. Eumenides first appeared 18 years before the main plot's timeframe, during which the protagonist Luo Fei was a student in the police academy. Both his roomie best friend and his then-lover perished in the hands of Eumenides, and 18 years later, Eumenides resurfaced, inviting Luo, now an Inspector in some small county, back into the main city to play witness and/or adversary to Eumenides' killing (or rather 'execution') spree.
In the main city, Luo has to work with the prideful local Chief Inspector Han Hao and the beautiful criminal psychologist Mu Jianyun to stop Eumenides, who apparently has so much talent and confidence that he/she dared send the police notices prior to each 'execution'.
The story has some potential and it's well-paced with nary a dull moment. It is an amalgam of Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom, Journey Under the Midnight Sun, The A.B.C. Murders, but sadly it lacked the sophistication of all of the aforementioned works.
Writing-wise there's way too much telling and an overdose of self-explanation where the reader's inference skills would have sufficed. It's somewhat bearable when reading this in Chinese but I can imagine the ridiculous meter amped up should it get the English translation treatment. This was why I thought it best to skip the book and watch the series directly, it was grating to read clichéd archetypes justifying their actions through inner monologue all the time. There's the intrepid cool guy hero, the gruff but honest fighter type, the stubborn superior who refuses to acknowledge the hero, the smart female partner (both the prominent policewomen here were psychologists - yeah, girls to the psychology camp and boys to the action camp, very neat boxes), the goofy IT whiz kid etc. I accept these types more readily on screen somehow.
The book tried to be Miyabe Miyuki in terms of social commentary but the motivation, reasoning and the unfolding events lacked a convincing punch to me. It tried to reproduce Higashino Keigo and Tsugumi Ohba's suspenseful sleight-of-hand cat-and-mouse maneuvres but there were too many convenient unexplained technicalities that docked points for impressive impact. It just tried too hard.
Perhaps it's because there aren't that many Chinese writers seasoned in writing mysteries or suspense (at least those that I'm aware of). Perhaps the author's finesse gets better in the next instalments and I want to see that happen as I want to read more well-constructed Chinese detective novels.

ขัดใจที่ตำรวจทิ้งช่วงห่างจากผู้ร้ายตลอด ตามไม่เคยทัน
แล้วก็มีช่องโหว่ที่แม้แต่คนอ่านเองยังรู้สึก
ตำรวจระแวงกันเอง ไม่เป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกัน
อ่านแล้วหงุดหงิดตรงนี้
แต่ถึงพล็อตจะยังไม่โดนสำหรับเรา
แต่วิธีเล่าเรื่องสนุกมากกกกก
ลุ้นระทึกตามตลอด
พีคตอนที่จะเกิดฆาตกรรมทุกครั้ง ลุ้นทุกครั้ง
โดยเฉพาะตอนจบ ตอนเฉลยปม สนุกดี
เราอาจจะตั้งความหวังกับเล่มนี้สูงเกินไปหน่อย

คุณพระ สนุกมาก!!!
เปิดเรื่องมาปุ๊บเหมือนโดนต่อยที่หน้าอย่างจัง ฟาดตั้งแต่เริ่มเรื่อง ยิ่งอ่านก็ยิ่งเหมือนโดนต่อยโดนเตะไปเรื่อยๆจนจบเล่ม ยิ่งตอนช็อตสุดท้ายก่อนจบคือโดนฮุกเข้าลำตัวอย่างแรง พล็อตเรื่องกับการดำเนินเรื่องฟาดไม่หยุด ปังไม่หยุด คาดเดาอะไรไม่ได้เลย อ่านเพลินมาก มีช่วงเวิ่นเว้ออยู่บ้างแต่ไม่มาก ไม่ทำให้การอ่านหรือการดำเนินเรื่องสะดุด ชอบมาก สนุกมาก เลิศ!

Verbrecher müssen für ihre Taten büßen. Dazu müssen sie allerdings auch von den Behörden gefasst werden. Doch einige gehen ihnen durch die Lappen. Eine Person will das nicht durchgehen lassen – Eumenides! Er kündigt durch Todesanzeigen an, wann und wen er aufgrund welcher Verbrechen hinrichten wird. Die Polizei in der chinesischen Metropole Chengdu kann Eumenides nicht fassen, er führt den Polizeiapparat an der Nase herum. Als ein Kommissar ermordet wird, gründet der Polizeichef die Sondereinsatzgruppe 18/4 unter der Leitung von Hauptmann Han. Ein Wettlauf beginnt, kündigt Eumenides doch weitere Hinrichtungen an.
Wow, hätte nicht gedacht, dass mich der chinesische Autor Zhou Haohui so beeindrucken wird. Der chinesische Thriller aus 2014 wurde aus der englischsprachigen Ausgabe durch Heyne übersetzt. Zu Beginn haben mich zwar die chinesischen Namen ein wenig verwirrt. Doch dank eines kleinen Personenregisters und der guten Erzählweise hatte ich schnell keine Probleme mehr, die Protagonisten zu unterscheiden. Alle Personen konnte ich mir sehr gut vorstellen. Neben Han kommen der aus einem kleineren Ort kommende und charismatische Hauptmann Pei Tao dazu, der einige geheimnisvolle Beziehungen zu einem Fall von vor 18 Jahren aufweist, der Fall eine wichtige Rolle zu den aktuellen Ereignissen spielen wird. Mit dabei ist auch eine Polizeipsychologin namens Mu, die durch Hauptmann Han u.a. beauftragt worden ist, Pei Tao zu beobachten. Vor 18 Jahren gab es bereits eine Sondereinsatzgruppe 18/4, der der ermordete Polizeibeamte angehörte. Der damalige Fall wird in einem Tagebuch nacherzählt, das Pei Tao in den Unterlagen des toten Beamten findet. Zheng, ein IT-Experte, und Xiong Yuan, der Leiter der Spezialeinheit von Chengdu, ergänzen die Gruppe. Der Fall wird immer komplexer und undurchschaubarer. Eumenides ist brillant und trickreich. Schließlich weiß man gar nicht mehr, wer Täter und Opfer ist, wer Eumenides sein könnte. Hier lockt uns Zhou Haohui immer wieder aufs Glatteis. Das Buch ist durchgehend spannend, an keiner Stelle kommt Langeweile auf. Nur manchmal hatte ich das Gefühl, dass einige Wörter nicht stimmig waren. Das könnte aber an der doppelten Übersetzung liegen.
Der Thriller ist wirklich erstklassig und erhält von mir 5 Sterne.

A sadistic vigilante killer returns after an 18-year hiatus. In the distant past, the aptly-named Eumenides (Greek goddess of retribution) killed a high ranking corrupt policeman and two police cadets. Now, another senior police officer is murdered and Eumenides identifies his intended victims with death notices. The 4/18 task force is reassembled in Chengdu with Officer Pei, who had a close connection with the two cadets and is still haunted by their deaths. Eumenides toys with the police, punishing the guilty right under their noses and protection. I liked the cat and mouse game with the task force, and the cultural immersion in China. Gory.

Kirain awalnya cuma cerita soal penjahat yang jadi hakim buat orang-orang yang ga tersentuh hukum. Ternyata polisi-polisi tim investigasi kasus yang terpilih buat nanganin si penjahat juga ga bersih, punya rahasia, dan masa lalu kelam masing-masing. Suka!

ไม่เสียแรงออกจาก comfort zone ลองนิยายจีนเล่มแรกในชีวิต (ไม่นับงานที่เขียนโดย chinese-american อันนั้นสำหรับเราให้ฟีลฝรั่งมากกว่า) สนุกแฮะ ออกแนวหักเหลี่ยมเฉือนคม นึกถึงซีรี่จีนที่เคยดูสมัยก่อน ชวนให้ติดตาม เผลอแป๊บเดียวจบ นี่ต้องไปตามหาอีกสี่เล่มที่เหลือสินะ

Okay, this one is kind of on me. This Chinese best seller has been on my to-read list forever, ever since it was recommended by...I dunno, somebody. And yes, the author's back-flap bio and various reviews mention this being part of a trilogy, but I didn't realize it was just the first part of a continuing story - i.e., a cliffhanger, which I HATE. So points off for that, as I continue to assert that if you can't tell a good story in 300-400 pages, then you just can't tell a good story.
That said, pretty good plotting, but nothing that Jo Nesbo or plenty of others hasn't done as well or better. And while Zac Haluza is apparently a good enough translator, he is no writer - and so the whole book lacks an interesting style or voice - it reads like someone describing a TV mystery (which apparently this successfully became back in China).
I also note that it is a totally apolitical book, which is probably to be expected of something written and published in today's China. But when you're used to such iconic foreign dicks as Arkady Renko (honest but disillusioned Russian cop working in a corrupt Soviet system), Inspector O (honest but disillusioned Pyongyang cop working in a corrupt North Korean system), or Sonchai Jitpleecheep (honest but disillusioned Bangkok cop working in a corrupt Thai system), it came as a surprise that except for everyone eating a lot of noddles, this book lacked any sort of Chinese flavor (pun intended) or perspective - frankly could have been set anywhere.
Anyhow...another one I can move from "to-read" to "read." But I definitely won't be following the other books* to see how the story ends, (although wouldn't mind someone who's actually read them telling me!).
* Okay...so just where the hell is book three in this trilogy anyway? I see 2014's Fate listed as #2, but then...nothing. Someone still working on the English translation somewhere??

I would like to thank Netgalley and Heads of Zeus for an advance copy of Death Notice, the first novel in a trilogy, set in Chengdu, China.
18 years ago a killer calling himself Eumenides killed a high ranking police officer and two trainees in two separate incidents. Now Eumenides is back, first killing Sergeant Zheng Haoming who was part of the original 4/18 task force and is hot on his trail, then using the dark net to canvass for potential targets, those who have escaped justice through power and influence.
I thoroughly enjoyed Death Notice which had me hooked from the beginning and engrossed throughout. It is a very clever novel with Eumenides displaying an ingenuity and audacity rarely seen together and which has the police baffled and confounded. I felt myself gasping in surprise at every twist and turn and as there are plenty it's a bit of a breathless read. As the novel is told entirely from the police point of view, the narrative does switch between various task force members, Eumenides' actions have a much greater impact because the reader is privy to their "foolproof" preparations and how he outwits them thus comes as much as a shock to the reader as to them.
Mr Zhou certainly knows how to write a novel. The set pieces/action scenes are well orchestrated and even better imagined and are surrounded by prior preparation and debrief. The team's tension and intense preparation prior to them is palpable and their shock and anger after another failed mission all too obvious. I also enjoyed the interplay between the characters, suspicion, trust and secrets all come tumbling out as the pressure bites. The last few twists are jaw dropping and the only downside to the novel is the cliffhanger ending and the wait for the next instalment.
Death Notice is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

After the first few chapters I was skeptical. This was a thriller heavy on tropes, the characters felt one-dimensional, and I wasn't sure I would stick it out. But the thing about a thriller is that sometimes it doesn't need to be a complex character study. A thriller is about the thrills. And at the end of the day, that's what it needs to deliver more than anything else. DEATH NOTICE has no shortage of thrills and in the end it delivered.
The killer at the center of the story is a vigilante exacting justice in his own hands against those the law cannot find or does not punish. He sends death notices to the police and sometimes the victims as well, and yet even with the advance notice law enforcement is foiled at every turn.
This is the first in a series that's immensely popular in China. The comparisons to Se7en are apt, that was the first thing I thought of. In both you have the cat and mouse-style plot with a killer whose skill and intelligence continue to confound even the most brilliant detectives. Yes, it's a setup we've all seen before, but the details are intricate and satisfying. The pacing is well done, with new plot twists and unexpected reveals moving the story at a clip that makes it hard to put down. The Chinese setting is welcome as crime fiction continues to expand internationally and bring in more novels in translation. I hope it gets the marketing push it deserves because it'll be satisfying for a lot of thriller lovers.

Ưng nhất là từng màn nghi hoặc được tác giả đan cài vô làm cho độc giả nghi ngờ ngay cả người chân chính nhất và cuối cùng được tách bỏ từng lớp từng lớp ra sao. Kiểu nghi ngờ nhân sinh thế thái méo có ai tốt trong truyện luôn xong đùng một cái má ơi cái twist!! Amazing gút chóp em 😭😭😭😱😱😱😱 Ngàn sao cho cuốn sách này nhe 👏👏👏👏

Sempat bingung mau ngasih rating berapa. Tapi, ketika ketegangan yang dipancarkan buku ini membuat saya jadi menyalakan semua lampu di rumah dan rada parno ke kamar mandi, akhirnya saya putuskan 4,5 dibulatkan ke atas.
Udah lama nggak baca genre suspense. Lebih sering baca genre mystery/detective yang, walaupun ada pembunuh berantainya juga, nggak gini-gini amat suspense-nya haha. Meskipun gaya penceritaan buku ini mungkin bagi sebagian orang terlalu "tell", saya tetap menikmatinya.
Misterinya juga seru. Tebakan saya banyak yang benar, tapi juga banyak yang nggak tepat haha. Bukan melenceng jauh, cuma nggak tepat aja. Tapi yaa revelation-nya jadi nggak terlalu mengejutkan. Cuma, serunya adalah banyak banget tarik ulur dugaan di sana-sini, yang kayaknya emang disengaja biar dugaan pembaca juga jadi ikut berubah-ubah seiring petunjuk or so-called fakta yang ditunjukkan dalam perkembangan cerita.
Karakter-karakter dalam novel ini nggak terlalu mengena buat saya--barangkali karena mereka terlalu banyak "diceritakan" alias karena gaya penulisannya yang tell itu, jadi kayak flat aja (kendati Luo Fei diceritakan mengalami pergulatan emosi). Namun, terlepas dari karakterisasi yang "gitu doang", adegan-adegan di buku ini seru banget euy. Favorit saya tuh scene akhir sih. Gila, nggak nyangka .... Rasanya kayak nonton film yang ujung-ujung (klimaks)nya bikin mangap, terus menggantung, dan langsung bikin kita mengharapkan sekuel saat itu juga.
Saya nggak tahu kapan terjemahan buku keduanya terbit, jadi sepertinya saya bakal ngintip buku keduanya di Scribd.

แต่ถ้าถามหาความสนุก ก็คือสนุกแบบอะดรีนาลีนพุ่ง มีความเบียวแบบโคนันเดอะมูฟวี่ ฟีลคนร้ายจะต้องเป็นใส่หมวก+ถมดำทุกครั้งที่ปรากฏตัว เราก็ได้แต่ถามว่า เขาเป็นใครนะค๊ะ! (เพลงของมะเหมี่ยว)
เรื่องย่อจริงๆก็ตามที่ว่าไว้หลังเล่ม ฆาตกรต่อเนื่องนาม "ยูมินิดิส" กลับมาเขย่าขวัญอีกครั้งหลังจากหายไปสิบแปดปี กลับมาในรอบนี้ก็ท้าทายตำรวจยิ่งกว่าที่เคย เพราะมีการส่ง "สัญญาณเตือนตาย" หรือจดหมายสั้นๆถึงวัน-เวลา-ชื่อของเหยื่อ ที่จะถูกปลิดชีพเป็นรายต่อไปมาให้กรมตำรวจอีกด้วยแบบไม่ปิดบัง แต่เรื่องราวยิ่งซับซ้อนอีกขั้น เพราะยูมินิดิส จะลงมือกับคนที่สมควรถูกลงโทษเท่านั้น ซึ่งนอกจากจะเป็นการหยามกระบวนการยุติธรรมไม่พอ ยังทำให้กรมตำรวจแยกความรู้สึกส่วนตัวออกจากการทำงานได้ยากขึ้นอีกด้วย
แต่ครั้งนี้ตำรวจได้ฟอร์มทีมล่าใหม่ นำโดย หลัวเฟย ตำรวจที่เคยมีปมแค้นกับยูมินิดิสเมื่อหลายปีก่อน และดูเหมือนว่าในที่สุดยูมินิดิส อาจจะได้พบกับคู่แข���งที่สมน้ำสมเนื้อกับเขาเข้าแล้ว...ผ่าม! ผ๊ามม!
พลอตโอเค แต่คือตัวละครเบียวมากกก (ซึ่งไม่ใช่เรื่องที่ไม่ดีหรืออะไรหรอก) จริงๆส่วนตัวไม่ค่อยชอบคดีที่คนร้ายที่เอะอะใช้ระเบิดขู่พร่ำเพรื่อ แบบพร่ำเพรื่อมากเกิ๊น แต่เพราะเนื้อเรื่องในเล่มดำเนินไปได้เร็ว และมีความซับซ้อนในเรื่องราวแบบยกกำลังสิบ มันเลยเป็นแรงขับให้รู้สึกอยากรู้ อยากอ่านต่อเรื่อยๆ ตอนเฉลยคนร้ายช่วงฟินาเล่ท้ายเล่มก็ทำให้รู้สึกว้าวซ่าดี ถึงมันจะแหม่งๆมากๆก็ตาม (ทั้งวิธีสืบคดี และเนื้อเรื่องโดยรวม)

สิ่งที่ไม่ชอบเลยคือความไม่สมเหตุสมผลของการคาดเดาของตำรวจ และวิธีการสืบหาหลักฐานที่อิหยังวะมาก แต่บทพูดที่ใามาก็พยายามโน้มน้าวเราว่ามันเจ๋ง มันคูล มันฉลาดหลักแหลม ซึ่งมันแบบ กฏข้อแรกของการเขียนนิยายคือ show, don't tell อะเนอะ เพราะงั้นก็เลิก tell me how to feel about หลัวเฟยจูบกระโหลกแล้วรู้ว่าเป็นปากใครจ้า มันจะอ้วก 🌝
น่าจะเพราะมีแต่คนอวย ใจเลยคิดว่ามันจะดีกว่านี้ เป็นอีกครั้งที่ผิดหวังเพราะเชื่อคนอื่นมากไป ไม่เชื่อสัญชาตญาณของตัวเองในการเลือกหนังสือค่ะ 😔

Kalau dibilang engga seru, engga juga.
Kalau dibilang seru, bagi gue kurang terasa aspek thrilling-nya entah kenapa.
Ada beberapa buku mystery-thriller dengan konsep dan ide cerita yg serupa yg gue baca dan sejujurnya kesan gue terhadap buku2 tersebut masih better dari buku ini.
Karakter2nya juga engga ada yg attached.
Bahkan gue bingung karakter utama di sini siapa ya? Lou Fu? Lou Fi (lupa namanya), sebagai MC kurang menonjol. Dan dibilang di sini karakter dia cerdas, tapi gue engga merasa demikian.
Menurut gue bahkan karakter Lou ini terbilang lemah, karna faktor masa lalu, buat aksi2nya jadi kurang berani, cuma analisa sana sini tapi engga ada geraknya.
Gaya penulisannya sedikit kurang rapi, apalagi perpindahan POV yg engga ada hint-nya.
Terlepas dari cons gue dengan buku ini, masih penasaran sama sekuelnya!

3.5*This was more fun than i was expecting. It read more like a screenplay than a novel. I wouldve like the pace to be a little slower so we could appreciate more of the Chinese history/setting. I didnt really feel that engaged with the characters and its a bit sad to say but wasnt too worried if any of the main detectives perished. Will hold off on reading book 2 as it purely depends on the translator. The dialogue was quite cliched and direct, not sure if this was the translation.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it was tense, fast-paced and kept me guessing throughout. I would definitely recommend for fans of the manga, Death Note and the film, Se7en. Creepy stuff!

I guess the third book in this trilogy is never getting translated so I’m just gonna have to suck it up and read it in Chinese. Rereading the first two books for a refresher, so far it's just as awesome as I remember ✨

This book was incredibly dramatic and also incredibly entertaining.
There was so much going on in this story, the pacing was fast without feeling rushed, and there wasn’t a single dull moment. Characters who I didn’t even suspect to have much special about them ended up having more to them than meets the eye, which really kept me on my toes, especially towards the end. (Including one particularly obvious one that I am just kicking myself for not seeing earlier) This is exactly the kind of story I want when I pick up a mystery thriller.
That being said, I feel like some of the characters would occasionally make questionable choices because the plot demanded it. This book really is heavy on the dramatic, but I feel like it works. (I was really happy to find out that there’s even a drama adaption of this series, that on is definitely going on my to-watch-list!)
I’ve read more than my fair share of ‘serial killers playing games with the police’ books, but this is one that I expect will stick in my head for a long time, it had a lot of complexity to it, but without getting too confusing or convoluted, which is a hard balance to strike. Unlike many others with a similar sounding premise, this isn't simply a police vs serial killer story, there's so much more going on behind the scenes, and it felt very psychological to me as opposed to being more of a standard police procedural.
If you enjoy stories with lots of twists and turns, exciting set pieces, and gambits piled on top of gambits, then this one is for you!

Suka sekali dengan buku ini. Dari awal cerita aku sudah dibuat mati penasaran. Alurnya cepat tapi rapi sekali. Di setiap bab, penulis menyodorkan clue2 baru yang membuat aku tidak bisa berhenti baca. Semakin mendekati ending, semakin dibuat gregetan dan gak terhitung berapa kali aku bilang "HAH? WHAT?! GILA!". Dua kata untuk buku ini? Page Turner. Satu kata untuk plot twistnya? Gila!. Satu kata untuk pelakunya? EDAN!
Aku juga suka sekali dengan tim investigasi yang dibentuk untuk menuntaskan kasus 418. Ada Han Hao sebagi kepala tim dan Yin Jian asistennya. Mu Jianyun, seorang psikolog kriminal. Zeng Rihua, ahli IT. Kapten Xiong, kepala pasukan taktik khusus, dan Luo Fei, seorang opsir dari Longzhou yang terseret ke dalam kasus 418 karena suatu alasan. Tim yang lengkap tapi mempunyai rahasianya masing2. Mereka mempunyai tujuan yg sama yaitu untuk menangkap Eumenides. Tapi mereka punya caranya sendiri dan hipotesisnya sendiri dalam menguak kasus 418, sampai akhirnya mereka tidak sadar, bahwa mereka dijadikan bidak catur oleh sosok Eumenides.
Bagian mendekati ending, aku tidak menyangka bahwa aku akan menangis. Pelaku berhasil menarik simpatiku. Inilah yang menjadi dilema ketika membaca sebuah buku misteri dan malah bersimpati pada pelakunya. Pelaku salah, tapi ada secercah harapan agar pelaku bisa mendapatkan ampunan dan menjalankan hidup yg lebih baik.
"Namun, ia tidak merasa gembira atas pencapaiannya itu. Ia justru merasa sangat kesepian."
Untuk kekurangan dari buku ini, menurutku adalah adanya beberapa adegan yang terlalu dramatis sehingga terkesan unrealistic. Untuk ukuran sebuah permainan yang diciptakan oleh satu orang aku merasa itu terlalu berlebihan. Selain itu, cukup banyak typo dan ada bbrp kalimat yg kurang satu kata. Meskipun begitu buku ini tetap sangat recommended.
⚠️ Bagi yang tertarik membaca buku ini, harap dibaca bahwa buku ini memiliki ENDING GANTUNG. meskipun aku bisa bilang buku ini 1/2 gantung.

Cuốn này, kẻ sát nhân nhân danh chính nghĩa của riêng hắn, tự xưng là Eumenides (nữ thần báo thù trong thần thoại Hy Lạp), “thay” cảnh sát khai tử cho những tên tội nhân lọt lưới pháp luật. Nhưng khác với kẻ phạm tội thường phải lẩn trốn trong bóng tối, trước mỗi lần giết người hắn đều ngang nhiên gửi đến nạn nhân và cảnh sát một văn bản với nét chữ viết ngay ngắn chuẩn mực nêu rõ tội trạng, ngày hành quyết, gọi là “bản thông báo tử vong”. Tất cả những gì còn lại mà người thụ hình phải đợi chờ chỉ còn là cái chết.
Đến thời điểm hiện tại thì tình tiết kiểu này đã không còn mới với tôi nữa. Giang Á trong Ánh sáng thành phố của Lôi Mễ cũng có tư tưởng thay trời hành đạo. Trần Tiến, Từ Sách trong series Mưu sát quan viên của Tử Kim Trần cũng chọn cách “tự xử” đi kèm với thái độ khiêu khích cảnh sát khi cán cân công lý nghiêng lệch về phía tiền tài. Nghe đâu bộ manga Death note nổi tiếng của Nhật Bản cũng xây dựng từ hoạt cảnh này. Nhưng Bản thông báo tử vong của Chu Hạo Huy vẫn tạo được sức hấp dẫn riêng của nó.
Sức hấp dẫn ở đây không chỉ nằm ở cốt truyện được xây dựng hợp lí, mà còn ở cách chuyển tải toàn chuyện, gợi mở dần dần. Tưởng tượng câu chuyện như một nụ hoa, thứ ẩn sâu nhất là cái nhụy. Phải nở dần, đi vào dần, nhụy hoa mới lộ ra, thì việc đi tìm cốt lõi của mọi việc cũng vậy. (Há há, tôi cũng thấy cái so sánh này quê mùa thảo mai hết sức. Hoa hoét gì cơ. Nhưng mà nó như vậy đó.) Sẽ có lúc người đọc lờ mờ tự phỏng đoán ra được một vài điều, điều này làm bạn thấy phấn khởi, thấy thành tựu – tôi cũng thế mà. Nhưng tôi tin là bạn sẽ không thể đoán được tất cả. Và nó sẽ khiến bạn nôn nóng, hiếu kỳ, muốn cầm sách đọc tiếp mãi đến khi chân tướng sự việc cuối cùng cũng hoàn toàn lật mở.
Sức hấp dẫn còn nằm ở thái độ coi thường của Eumenides trước lực lượng chấp pháp hùng hậu được trang bị bài bản, khiến bạn cực kì tò mò muốn giải đáp câu hỏi: “Hắn sẽ làm cách nào?” Kẻ giết người quá mù quáng với thứ công lý hắn tôn sùng và lại quá ngông cuồng với khả năng của bản thân. Hai điều này đã nhào nặn nên một cá thể nguy hiểm và xuất sắc. Màn trình diễn của Eumenides trước mặt những người trong cuộc rất tương quan với thái độ khinh mạn từ đầu tới cuối của hắn. Bằng chứng là phía cảnh sát dù có những cá nhân tài giỏi, tinh anh, vẫn bất lực trước những thủ đoạn của hắn. Còn tôi không thể không bị ấn tượng về cách hắn điều khiển thế cục, không khác gì một vị tướng: dù chẳng mấy khi phải đụng chân tay nhưng vẫn làm chủ được thế trận. Mà thế trận của hắn thì hoàn hảo.
Đọc đến đây lại thấy tôi hình như đề cao nhân vật Eumenides quá rồi. Có đúng là hắn siêu đẳng như thế, làm được mọi việc như thế không? Ồ, chắc chắn là không nếu như hắn không tìm ra cách khắc phục tình cảnh đơn thương độc mã trong suốt quá trình phạm tội. Eumenides tài giỏi, thông thạo nhiều lĩnh vực, nhưng hắn không thể thành công nếu không có bàn tay tiếp sức của kẻ khác. Điều đáng sợ là ở chỗ bàn tay này không phải tình nguyện giơ ra, mà bị hắn dẫn độ vào thế tiến thoái lưỡng nan, bị giật dây khống chế, để rồi cuối cùng không thể không làm theo chương trình hắn đã hoạch định. Hắn là nghệ sĩ múa rối bậc thầy!
Ơ, nói về Eumenides nhiều quá. Cũng tại trong cả cuốn sách thì đây là nhân vật tôi thấy ấn tượng nhất, dù chỉ được đứng từ xa để nhìn hắn. Một kiểu nhân vật cực kích thích trí tò mò.
Một số nhân vật khác:
La Phi hình như là cũng giỏi nhưng chưa có nhiều đất dụng võ nên tôi chưa được kiểm chứng độ giỏi giang của người cảnh sát này. Trong tập 1 hầu như chỉ thấy được sự đau khổ dằn vặt của anh trước câu chuyện quá khứ và một vài chi tiết suy luận đột phá được tác giả tô điểm để phục vụ cho việc tìm ra bí ẩn của vụ án năm xưa. Mà đôi khi cái sự tô điểm này cũng hơi quá (như chi tiết hàm răng của Mạnh Vân, í ẹ) đâm ra tôi lại thấy hơi ảo.
Hàn Hạo cũng giỏi luôn, nhưng cái tâm con người này không được trong sáng. Đến giờ tôi cũng vẫn chưa ngã ngũ trong cảm giác về nhân vật này. Vừa khinh thường những việc anh ta làm trong quá khứ nhưng cũng có một chút gì đó chờ mong ở sau này. Không biết anh ta có còn xuất hiện không!
Mộ Kiếm Vân lại cũng giỏi nhưng không làm tôi bị thu hút. Mặc dù được giới thiệu là một chuyên gia tâm lý hàng đầu, có thể đuổi mặt bắt suy nghĩ, nhưng cô không thể hiện được nhiều vai trò trong diễn biến truyện. Có lẽ tác giả chỉ cho nhân vật này để thêm vào mấy nét mềm mại cho một câu chuyện từ đầu chí cuối toàn đàn ông. Nhưng mà vậy thì cần gì phải tung hô là chuyên gia gì gì đó chứ.
Tăng Nhật Hoa cũng cha chả là giỏi nốt (sao người giỏi cứ tập trung hết vào một chỗ thế chứ lại), và là một anh chàng khá thú vị. Trong những khoảnh khắc căng thẳng thì anh chàng này sẽ mang lại vài giây phút thư giãn, gây cười.
So sánh với Tử Kim Trần, hành văn của Chu Hạo Huy trôi chảy và đỡ khô khan hơn hẳn. Phần tâm lí cũng được chú ý hơn, dù tôi vẫn chưa thấy thỏa mãn như khi đọc series của Lôi Mễ (nhắc đến trinh thám Trung Quốc thì tôi cứ phải nhắc đến thầy Lôi mới được). Ít nhất thì cũng như kiểu đi trên nền đất ẩm chứ không phải giữa đại mạc trông mãi không thấy ốc đảo như đọc văn của Tử Kim Trần.
Truyện xây dựng nên khá nhiều nhân vật nhưng lại không lấy ai làm nhân vật trung tâm hoàn toàn, khi đọc cảm thấy hơi bị phân tán – đó là điểm trừ đầu tiên theo quan điểm của tôi.
Điểm trừ thứ hai thuộc về phần nội dung, là động cơ đi vào con đường “bàng môn tả đạo” của Viên Chí Bang không hề thuyết phục tôi chút nào. Ai lại đi vì một cô gái mới chỉ yêu được trong một thời gian ngắn, tình cảm chưa sâu đậm, lại đã tự mình chủ động chia tay… mà trở mặt giết hại những người bạn đã rất thân thiết từ rất lâu trước đó rồi cơ chứ! Ngoài ra, trong quá trình thực thi công lý của mình, Eumenides đã hi sinh rất nhiều mạng người vô tội trước khi đạt được mục đích. Vậy thì công lý của hắn có nghĩa lý gì, ngoài là cái vỏ che đậy cho mong muốn điên cuồng thỏa mãn khát vọng cá nhân? Mặc dù đã có đoạn lý giải cho việc này, tôi vẫn không thể chấp nhận được. Thật hết sức nhạt nhẽo vớ vẩn!
Và cuối cùng, một số chi tiết còn hơi gồng gượng, chưa phù hợp với tâm lí, hành động, logic thông thường. (Tự nhiên đến giờ lại quên mất nhưng khi đọc chắc chắn có thể nhận ra.)
Dù sao thì Bản thông báo tử vong của Chu Hạo Huy đã vượt qua sự kì vọng của tôi một cách bất ngờ. Khi gấp sách vào, tôi đã thực sự thỏa mãn với những gì mình vừa đọc và mong chờ phần tiếp theo. Với tôi thế là được quá rồi!

Ai lại đi vì một cô gái mới chỉ yêu được trong một thời gian ngắn, tình cảm chưa sâu đậm, lại đã tự mình chủ động chia tay… mà trở mặt giết hại những người bạn đã rất thân thiết từ rất lâu trước đó rồi cơ chứ! Ngoài ra, trong quá trình thực thi công lý của mình, Eumenides đã hi sinh rất nhiều mạng người vô tội trước khi đạt được mục đích. Vậy thì công lý của hắn có nghĩa lý gì, ngoài là cái vỏ che đậy cho mong muốn điên cuồng thỏa mãn khát vọng cá nhân? Mặc dù đã có đoạn lý giải cho việc này, tôi vẫn không thể chấp nhận được. Thật hết sức nhạt nhẽo vớ vẩn!
Và cuối cùng, một số chi tiết còn hơi gồng gượng, chưa phù hợp với tâm lí, hành động, logic thông thường. (Tự nhiên đến giờ lại quên mất nhưng khi đọc chắc chắn có thể nhận ra.)
Dù sao thì Bản thông báo tử vong của Chu Hạo Huy đã vượt qua sự kì vọng của tôi một cách bất ngờ. Khi gấp sách vào, tôi đã thực sự thỏa mãn với những gì mình vừa đọc và mong chờ phần tiếp theo. Với tôi thế là được quá rồi!

Mau bilang enggak seru, tapi lumayan menggelitik rasa ingin tahu. Mau bilang seru tapi aku dua kali ketiduran baca buku ini. Inti ceritanya emang cukup bikin penasaran, tapi eksekusinya belum berhasil bikin aku terus kepikiran sama ceritanya.
Aku juga kesulitan buat membedakan tokohnya, mungkin karena aku nggak kebiasaan sama nama Chinese ya jadi agak bingung. Apalagi tokohnya banyak banget. Dalam penumpasan kasus juga rasanya tokoh utamanya nggak bergerak banyak, lebih sering bergerak sendiri dan kadang malah terlambat. Beda banget sama penggambaran awal yang cerdas.
Berangkat dari kasus pengeboman yang memakan korban setelah adanya 'surat kematian' mengguncang kepolisian, hingga 18 tahun berlalu kasus itu belum menemukan titik terang. Aku mungkin nggak bisa menebak siapa sebenarnya sang algojo dengan code name Eumenides, tapi nggak kaget juga setelah tahu dia siapa.
Meski kurang puas dengan buku ini, aku masih pengen baca buku keduanya.

Eines der besten Bücher die ich in letzter Zeit gelesen hab. Die Plottwists und die Charakterentwicklungen waren krass und das Buch an sich auch einfach mitreißend geschrieben.

Ngga jadi dnf setelah baca dari belakang, well banyak bagian not made sense, padahal ide cerita nya lumayan cuman eksekusi cara penulisannya yg bleh aja. Mungkin akan coba nonton web series nya aja kata temen more better plot than the book.

Bisschen schwierig am Anfang mit den Namen das ist für mich wie Solo Leveling aber ich war da halt noch nicht medicated und hab nicht gecheckt wer wer ist (jetzt schon)
Wirklich crazy cooler Antagonist der letzte Plottwist war bisschen fragwürdig, hat sich sehr last minute angefühlt aber insgesamt absolut spannend und sehr angenehm geschrieben

Đoạn đầu thì bình thường, mọi thứ chầm chậm. Đoạn cuối được đẩy nhanh hơn, nhiều cú twist hơn, cứ như đi trên tàu lượn siêu tốc vậy :))) có lúc mình cảm thấy theo không kịp phải đọc chậm lại chút.
Kẻ đã chết bỗng dưng sống lại, kẻ tưởng là an toàn nhất cuối cùng chết ngay bởi tay người chịu trách nhiệm cho sự an toàn của mình, haizzz, cuộc sống thật là khó đoán.
Giờ mình cày tiếp phần 2 đây hehe 😁

Mình cũng không khỏi thở dài khi nghĩ đến Hàn Hạo, anh ta từng đi sai một bước, rồi cứ thế tiếp tục những sai lầm nối tiếp nhau, cứ như đã leo lên một chuyến tàu cao tốc không cách gì dừng lại được. Kết cục thật sự đáng buồn :((
