The Oxford dictionary's definition of an ism is "a distinctive practice, system, or philosophy, typically an artistic movement". This book, "ISMS: Understanding Photography", is a great choice for creative students who want to understand the chronological progression of photography. The first photographer, Joseph Nicephore Niepce of France, took the first photograph in 1827. His earliest surviving photograph, made in a camera, was a "View from a Window at Le Gras. The process needed eight hours of exposure to light; the picture was blurred, but you could see rooftops in the creation. It was an exciting beginning.
Emma lewis chose to analyze 170 years of photography in this book. She did so, in the format of four Isms: moments, themes, movements, and approaches. She also suggested how to use this book. I believe, basic knowledge of the history of photography is probably important for the reader to have. References to certain photographers and techniques may escape you otherwise.
She breaks down her analysis into four sections: "Modern", "Society and Humanity", "Postmodern" and "Contemporary". It is interesting to see how far back trends like paparazzism, the nudes, still life and street photography go. I noticed that voluntary movement in modern photography has a history; it originated in 1909 in the period called futurism and/or motionism. Photographers use long exposures in low or fleeting light to show motion. This was a hostile movement against static medium at that time!
Consider the importance of absolute sharpness then and now. In many ways, photography has not changed, except for the availability of amazing new expensive cameras and accessories. However, there is loyalty out there. Revival attempts are quite common. Think how "Polaroid" refuses to die.
More recent years are covered by Emma under these topics: Environmentalism, Globalization, Activism, Expanded Documentary, Fictional Narrativism, Conflict and Surveillance, New formalism and Post Internet. Her inclusion of famous images, captured by select historical photographers, makes her analogy pleasing and easy to comprehend.
In conclusion, she reminds us in the time of the release of this book, that a billion images were uploaded to the internet daily. Recent stats actually indicate we post a staggering 1.8 billion to social media every day. Nowadays, images are downloaded, often for free, and assembled into painterly representations and fine art. It is a reminder that professional photographers, especially now in this pandemic, have to engage in more creative endeavors to sell their work. The rest of us will remain amateurs and enthusiast photographers!
There is so much information in Emma Lewis's book. Read it and no doubt, you will be inspired and will want to research these isms further.
There is so much information, useful information, in one to two pages about each school. You can't just memorize all the information and put the book aside. You should constantly return to it. It doesn't give you a guideline or a photographic perspective, like the book "Read this if you want to take great photographs" ,but it definitely introduces you to some great info about different photography schools
Good book for beginners who want an overview of the -isms without too much detail. Wish I dedicated more time to search up the photographers/photographs this book mentioned.
