FBI K-9 #6

Under Pressure

Rate this book
FBI handler Meg Jennings and her K-9 partner, Hawk, are drawn into a blood diamond smuggling investigation with an enemy whose power and ruthlessness know no bounds . . .

Diamonds are no one’s best friend when the jewels in question are smuggled conflict gems. Meg Jennings and her Labrador, Hawk, have undertaken many search-and-rescue missions, but this case has an unusual twist. A Philadelphia syndicate is importing diamonds from war-torn African nations and selling them with fake certificates to Stateside dealers. Agent Finn Pierce of the Organized Crime Program is embedded with the syndicate, but being caught with a wire or tracking device would mean instant execution. If Meg, her partner Brian Foster, and their dogs can track Pierce to a deal location, they can break the smuggling chain while maintaining Pierce’s cover.

With the syndicate monitoring every move, it’s a risky operation with more players than Meg and Brian first assumed—on both sides of the law. And when one of their own gets caught in the line of fire, the team embarks on a desperate rescue mission, knowing that mere seconds are all that separate life and death . . .

Yep, I’ve done it again - dived into the middle of a series! This series is about the FBI K-9 unit which is what attracted me to the book. But the dogs are usually used in SAR work or specific forensic searches. In this story the dog teams were taking a more active part in an operation involving the mob!

I’m not a fan of gangster or mob stories but heigh ho. The FBI also has a diamond trafficking unit (who knew?) that focuses on conflict or blood diamonds that are used to finance tinpot warlords. They are illegal but still smuggled because the workers get paid peanuts. The FBI becomes aware that conflict diamonds are being traded Philadelphia and they have an undercover agent placed with the mob there. One of the supervisors has the idea of using the dogs to track their agent as he heads to a diamond handover with his mob boss. It got quite complicated so I won’t go into detail. It wasn’t particularly interesting. They catch a couple of mob underlings but nothing to break the case wide open.

Meg Jennings and her dog Hawk are involved. Meg lives with her fire fighter/paramedic partner in a duplex and her sister Cara lives with her partner, Clay McCord an investigative journalist in the other half of the duplex. The FBI has worked with McCord before and, it just so happens, he is also working on a story about diamond smuggling (of course he is) so they compare notes. McCord has done a deep dive into the mob dealings and uncovered all sorts of info so one night he decides to investigate a massive logistics facility as he suspects one of the warehouses is being used to grow marijuana. Things go horribly wrong for McCord and he gets caught.

There was nothing wrong with the story, it was fine, if a bit fanciful but it just didn’t grab me. Some of the dialogue seemed corny/cheesy/preppy it’s hard to describe. The characters, the dialogue the niceness of everybody - it all seemed a bit young! The ending was, as you would expect, very exciting but the rest of the story was not. The characters were, if anything, too ‘nice’ and of course diving into a series at book 6 didn’t help with getting to know them. The dogs, however, were awesome. I think if it had been a search and rescue story I would have enjoyed it more. But, please read the other more positive reviews. Most people really enjoyed this. Many thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

This new story in the FBI K-9 series is another edgy mystery with the K-9 teams that work in scent trailing for the FBI. In this story, the teams are working with Finn, an undercover agent from another branch of the FBI, who is working deep in the Philadelphia Italian Mob. The primary goal to try to uncover the illegal activities of bringing conflict diamonds into this country, those mined by cheap, inhumane labor in south Africa, and bring those involved to justice. Meg and her lab, Hawk, and her partner Brian and his dog, Lacey, work to sniff the bad guys out as they make the drops using clothing provided by Finn. There are some tense, dangerous moments during the drops as well as other times and the teams have to go in some precarious places. Action packed and suspenseful, this story is interesting with many facts about diamonds and information about what the Mob is involved in these days, which is different from years ago. Another winner by the authors!
I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.

UNDER PRESSURE (An FBI K-9 Novel Book #6) by Sara Driscoll is another exciting fast paced crime thriller/FBI procedural featuring FBI canine handler Meg Jennings and her K-9 Labrador partner, Hawk. These books can easily be read as standalone books due to the unique crime case plots, but the core characters and their relationships continue to evolve in each book, so I feel they are best read in order of their release.

FBI canine handlers Meg Jennings and Brian Foster are paired together to help with an FBI Organized Crime case investigating the smuggling of conflict “blood” diamonds by the mob in Philadelphia. The FBI has an agent embedded in the syndicate, but he would be killed if he was caught with a wire or tracking device. Meg and Brian will use their dogs, Hawk and Lacy to track the agent to criminal locations while keeping the agent’s identity a secret.

As the investigation heats up, Meg is identified as law enforcement and she barely escapes an attempt on her life with the help of Hawk. At the same time, McCord is using his journalistic skills on the same investigation and it becomes a race for the entire team to find him when he does not check in on time.

I really enjoyed this addition to the series and catching up with all the recurring main characters. The information on conflict diamonds was well researched and interesting. The use of Hawk and Lacy when a wire or tracking device could not be used was unique and I wonder if that was pulled from an actual case. The action is continually fast paced and the tension high throughout with the dog tracking the FBI embedded agent and the race to rescue McCord at the climax. It is always great to check back in on the lives of Meg and Webb and Cara and McCord and of course all the dogs. I was also very glad that Brian was able to return with a healed Lacy.

I highly recommend this crime thriller/FBI procedural and the entire series!

"Diamonds are no one’s best friend when the jewels in question are smuggled conflict gems."

Getting into a book about Meg, her partner Brian, as well as their SAR dogs, Hawk and Lacey, always brings a smile to my face. In this case, they take on the mob in a blood diamond smuggling case. The FBI hopes the dogs will be able to track their agent who has embedded himself with the mobsters. If they can identify those responsible for buying and selling unethically acquired uncut diamonds around Philadelphia, they'll be able to break the smuggling chain while maintaining Pierce’s cover.

There was a lot of information about diamonds, where they come from, what the different colors are, etc, which I wasn't particularly interested in. However, I always enjoy reading about the intelligence of a service K9. There was the usual violence but also, as usual, the characters bounce back almost instantly. (I still agree with the reviewer who wrote: "It read like the Perils of Penelope Pitstop occasionally"😄) Having said that, though, the last episode of violence was more gruesome than usual.

At the end of the day Under Pressure relates the wonderful lesson that family can be made up of, not just of blood relatives, but those who are closely bonded by circumstances of life.

FBI handler Meg Jennings and her canine partner Hawk track diamonds and the mafia in this #6 in the series. Readers know all the favorite characters in this book - Todd Webb - firefighter / paramedic, Clay McCord - investigative journalist, Cara - Meg's younger sister.

I missed books #4 and #5. I don't understand why the library has books 1 to 3 but then skipped the next two but I am happy to get this one. A lot must have happened in those missing stories. Meg and Todd liked each other in the last one I read and now they are co-habitating as are Clay and Cara.

Lot of working rescue dogs in this story - Black Lab Hawk, German Shepherd Rocco, Golden Retriever Cody, Mini Pit Bull Saki, Brindle Greyhound Blink, among others. I continue to love Meg's parents who run a rescue. Books with the mafia are usually not my favorite stories but I liked all the information on diamonds, which I surely love.

The story begins with an interesting idea that search dogs could be used to track criminals trading conflict diamonds. At first sight this seems feasible, but as the story progresses and the difficulties of working in a highly populated city environment become clear, it didn’t feel like this investigation is worth the risks. Unfortunately I found it all rather irritating rather than interesting.

Although the diamond investigation wasn’t interesting, things did start to heat-up in the latter part of the book, but I still didn’t particularly enjoy the story. If possible I would have given 2.5 stars.

I just can’t get enough of this series: Meg and her canine partner, Hawk and all the other solid cast of characters. This time it’s about the mob and diamond smuggling, that the FBI is trying to put an end to. McCord is also researching the mob and the diamonds, and what he discovers leads to much more than just the diamonds. And as always in this series the action is fast paced and nonstop. I will say this again, as I have in every book in this series, the dogs are amazing!

In Under Pressure, Book 9 of Sara Driscoll's FBI K-9 series (Kensington 2021), FBI K-9 handler Meg Jennings and her working dog Hawk are called in to help crack a case that deals with conflict diamonds. In an effort to stop the trade of these immoral diamonds in the US, the FBI wants to catch the buyers as well as the sellers, easiest done at a sale while it’s happening. They have an inside man but it would endanger him to try to contact him for details of the meet so they get the clever idea of having Hawk and another K9 Lacy follow his scent to the meet and then arrest the buyer. When it doesn't work as planned, the criminals now have an inkling that something isn't right which makes the case much harder to solve.

This story, like the entire series, is fast moving with interesting characters and a focus on working dogs. Each chapter starts with a factoid about the diamond industry, a little cutesy but interesting. While I enjoy the storyline and the characters, one part that started bothering me maybe last book and continues into this one is that Meg  has become a tad smug about her talents, willing to judge other agents or make decisions that shouldn't be hers to make, even order agents around when she doesn't really have that authority. That's why the book lost a point and for me, became a bit tiresome to read--not so much that I didn't finish it. I love Hawk.

Recommended for those who enjoy stories about working dogs.

This one didn’t grab me completely but it was still great. Not sure why but it was a little slow. Probably the dogs and their searching abilities were featured a little less than I’ve come to expect. I enjoy the way Driscoll always teaches us just a little about the books subject though. The blood diamond information was interesting.

This is a great series, especially if you love dogs. Give it a try if you haven’t. I’m already waiting for the next one.

This is a good book with an amazing cast of characters and the dogs who take center stage. When Meg and Brian are brought in on a case against the MOB it gets dicey and very dangerous for those involved. Follow the characters as they navigate the new challenges and risk that become very personal.

The 6th installment of this series is definitely a nail biter! This time Meg and Hawk are drawn into the dangerous world of blood diamonds. And the Mob! Not their type of case, but it doesn't take long before things take a very dangerous turn. I could not put this book down! Wow!

The sixth book of Sara Driscoll’s FBI K-9 series, Under Pressure, deftly carries on the consistency of outstanding story that I’ve come to expect in this series. This series has proved itself a solid part of crime/mystery fiction’s finest and one of my favorites. The plot, the pacing, and the characters (both human and animal) work seamlessly together to keep the reader reading just a little bit more and then a little bit more. I always find it hard to find a stopping point for my bookmark, which can lead to some seriously late-night reading. Meg Jennings and her search-and-rescue Labrador Hawk lead the way as readers follow them into another dangerous case, showing us just how valuable an asset the FBI K9s are.

FBI K-9 Handler Meg Jennings and her D.C. firefighter/paramedic boyfriend Todd Webb have taken the plunge and moved in together. In what is the best of living situations, Meg’s sister Cara and her boyfriend, Washington Post journalist Clay McCord, have also moved in together, with each couple occupying an identical half of a duplex. The proximity of the couples is a good arrangement, as McCord has become an unofficial resource in Meg’s FBI cases. No sooner are the moving boxes unloaded than another case for the FBI’s Human Scent Evidence Team comes up.

Usually, Meg and Hawk work with Brian Foster and his German shepherd Lacey under the direction of Special-Agent-in-Charge Craig Beaumont, but in a first time inter-departmental collaboration for the K-9 unit, they will be working with the Organized Crime Program and the Diamond Trafficking Program. The issue at hand is conflict diamonds, known also as blood diamonds, that are being brought into the United States by the “Philly Mob.” The goal is to have the dogs track one of the couriers and bust up the selling and buying of these illegal diamonds. The courier is an undercover FBI agent who is deeply embedded into one of the crime families and who will supply his scent for tracking. It’s an experimental endeavor, but Meg and Brian feel Hawk and Lacey are up to the task. Journalist Clay McCord reveals that he’s been working on a story about the Philadelphia Mob that includes conflict diamonds and other illegal transactions, which expands the scope of the investigation beyond just conflict diamonds and raises the stakes for both the mob and for those hunting for truth and justice.

Most of the action takes place in Philadelphia, where the Italian Mob is heavily entrenched in their illegal activities. Sara Driscoll is one of the best authors I read who give a sense of place so clearly and interestingly. There’s no superfluous description of setting, but a thorough knowledge of it is apparent. There is an astute efficiency in every book of the series acclimating the reader to the lay of the land. I can imagine that someone who is quite familiar with Philadelphia feels themselves running alongside Meg and Brian and their dogs.

There’s always so much to talk about that the author does right in these books. Although I’ve commented in reviews of previous books in this series, I feel a review of any of these books is incomplete without a mention of how great the characters are. Those of us who have read all the books thus far would no doubt agree that we are heavily invested in Meg, Cara, Todd, and Clay, and that we are absolutely besotted with Hawk and Lacey, and the non-working dogs-- Blink, Saki, and Coy. The evolution of the main characters’ closeness has been a story in itself to watch unfold, and I look forward to further developments. And, a shout-out for the dialogue with its witty additions to an already cleverly written narrative.

I so highly recommend the FBI K-9 series and this most recent book, Under Pressure. From the insightful title of many connections to the exciting action and clock driven suspense to the characters who rise to impossible challenges, Under Pressure is another unmitigated success in this series of brilliant storytelling.

Author Information
Sara Driscoll is the nom de plume for Jen Danna and Ann Vanderlaan, who collaborate on the FBI K-9 mysteries. Jen lives in Canada and is a scientist who specializes in infectious diseases (and yes, she’s been and is involved in COVID-19 research and trials). Ann lives in North Carolina and has expertise in many fields as a former research scientist, consultant, teacher (both medical and veterinary schools), software developer, and involvement in dog rescue and training. Jen and Ann, under their own names, have written a previous series together, the intriguing Abbott and Lowell Forensic Mysteries, which has five books thus far (and I hope more to come). The FBI K-9s Mysteries, written under Sara Driscoll, now has six books and definitely more to come. Jen Danna also has a new (two books so far) solo series, the NYPD Negotiators Thrillers, another exciting line of stories.

Under Pressure by Sara Driscoll
FBI K-9 #6

Great addition to a wonderful series ~ Can’t wait for book seven!

What I liked:
* Meg Jennings: FBI search and rescue officer with K-9 partner Hawk the wonderful Labrador, works well with humans and dogs, is a team player, caring, kind, communicates openly with teammates and her life partner Todd Webb, smart, professional, capable, can be lethal but also loving. I like her.
* Todd: fireman and paramedic, strong, capable, caring, wise, open, communicates his feelings, Meg’s partner, stalwart, a good man, and great love interest-book boyfriend for Meg.
* Hawk: extraordinary dog, wonderful with humans and other animals, professional, protective, makes me smile thinking about him.
* Clay McCord: journalist, partner, and lover of Meg’s sister, determined, honest, focused, strong willed, honest, brave, will do much but not anything for a story.
* Cara: Meg’s sister, dog trainer, cares deeply for Clay, doesn’t have a big part in this book, liked seeing her again.
* Brian and Lacy – nice to see she has healed and ready to be back at work
* The FBI K-9 team – there for one another, not much said about them in this book but hope to hear more about them in the future. Also admired their leaders as I could respect them…or what I saw of them in this book.
* Meg & Cara’s parents: good people that run an animal rescue sanctuary – and getting to see Emma and how she is faring (Emma from a previous book)
* The informative epigraph at the beginning of each chapter – learned a lot about diamonds by reading them.
* That the title of the book is pertinent to the story in more than one way
* That this time the story was about using the abilities of the dogs to circumvent and stop crime. Diamond trafficking.
* That the people and animals I hoped would live did and will show up in the next book…hopefully
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that conflict-blood diamonds do exist and that the horrors surrounding them are all to real
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

In Sara Driscoll’s Under Pressure, the 6th installment in the FBI K-9 thriller series, this new thriller is riveting and compelling on every page from start to finish. For Meg Jennings, a former cop and K-9 dog handler, it was nothing but a routine search and rescue mission with her dog Hawk. While things were going good with her partner Todd Webb, a firefighter/paramedic, she received a call from her boss to go on a special assignment for the FBI. They needed her to trail an undercover agent named Finn Pierce who investigated an illegal diamond trade joint on in Philadelphia. Between her and her colleague Ryan and his dog Lacey, they did a practice trail without giving themselves and his location away after a couple of tries. When they passed, they dealt with the real thing and real big-time danger dealing with the Philly crime family and their illegal crime operations in the city. When someone attacked her and the dog, it became personal. And when danger attacked her, it hit close to home when she fought for her life. When her sister’s partner go missing, it’s up to Meg and Hawk, Brian and Lacey to find him before it’s too late to save him.

This K-9 thriller is suspenseful and daring. I cared for Meg on how she cared for her sister and for her dog Hawk. I could see the passion in her eyes and why she loved her job as a SAR dog handler. I also cared for Brian, Webb, McCord, and Cara. They were a stellar cast of characters. Hawk and Lacey were amazing dogs who took care of her owners. The locations set in Philly, Washington D.C, and Virginia were picturesque with vivid scenic settings. The theme of the story is watch your step when trouble follows you home.

This twisted l thriller is captivating and keeps you wanting to read more. I couldn’t find anything to nitpick on since I love dog-themed novels. I rated this book, four out of five stars for no reason. If you love K-9 thrillers with twists and turns with riveting non-stop action, plenty of dramatic suspense, and tons of drama, Under Pressure is right up your alley. This book is recommended for those who love Margaret Mizushima, dog-centric thrillers, and K-9/FBI thrillers and dramas.

Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I was interested to see where this series would go next. I've been reading the whole FBI K-9 series, mostly through the library or KindleUnlimited.  It's really enjoyable with plenty of police work and seems to make good use of the dogs, keeping them well into the story.  There is a really nice development of the team, along with the personal relationships of the main characters.

Meg with Hawk and Brian with Lacey are partners in the Human Scent team, doing primarily search and rescue.  But they can also scent and track criminals from a scene.  Lacey was injured in the last book on such a search.  She is back in on the action.  In Under Pressure, the team is scenting an undercover cop embedded into a criminal organization to catch them.  It is really smart strategy but also extremely dangerous if they are seen.

The romance is in the background but still nice developments with Meg and Todd, along with her sister, Cara and Clay, moved into their duplex.  Clay McCord has established himself as part of their team, even though he is a reporter.  He takes too many risks and suffers some consequences here.

I love this series and definitely will keep reading as many as are written.  The combination of a caring group of friends / family , dogs, smart police work and exciting tracking works for me.

"Under Pressure" is a K9 suspense. This book is the sixth in a series, but you don't need to read the previous books to understand this one. This book didn't spoil any previous mysteries.

The main characters were likable, interesting, and reacted realistically to events. The suspense came from the danger involved with taking on a powerful crime syndicate and the potential for them to discover how the FBI was busting their deals. Tracking the deals also turned out to be more challenging than they expected. I kind of wondered why Hawk, who had a personal reason to remember the scent of a certain violent criminal, seemed oblivious (and useless) when his owner later tried to track that man by sight.

There was some bad language. There were no sex scenes. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful novel.

I received an e-book review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Under Pressure by Sara Driscoll is another wonderful K-9 mystery! Under Pressure highlights the history and marketing of 'Blood Diamonds' or unethically acquired uncut diamonds. FBI handler Meg Jennings and her K-9 partner, Hawk, find themselves drawn into a case with her partner Brian Foster and his K-9 partner, Lacey.
Danger awaits meg and her partners as they try to locate and observe the handoff of the diamonds to the merchant. This proves to be a painful and frustrating maneuver due to the logistics where timing is the difference between failure and success. The whole cast of characters is like a visit with old friends. I enjoy this series!

I have enjoyed the FBI K-9 series by Sara Driscoll but do not think this book was her best effort. Meg Jennings and Brian Foster and their search dogs Hawk and Lacy are assigned to the Organized Crime Program to help find members of the mob who are selling conflict diamonds. I found the story slow to get going and for the most part pretty improbable. I like the Meg Jennings character, but in this book, she took ridiculous chances with her own safety that I found annoying. Clay McCord, investigative reporter and partner to Meg's sister Cara, just happens to be investigating the mob at the same time and is drawn into the danger and drama. I will stick with this series and do recommend it even though this was not my favorite offering.

I have been reading a number of K-9 murder mysteries and for the most part they are just ok. This series falls into that category, and for my ear, the characters are a bit wooden, even though when I run through them in my head, I think they have potential that has not been fleshed out enough for me. If you enjoy the genre, this series is okay, though for me, this book is a bit weaker than the rest.

I have been enjoying the FBR K-9 series by Sara Driscoll and Under Pressure was a great addition to the series. Meg Jennings and her K-9 partner, Hawk, a Labrador work together well. She is on vacation when she is called in to her boss' office. When she arrives, Brian Foster, another agent and his dog, Lacy, are also there. They are briefed about a case that sounds dangerous and different from others they have worked. Agent Finn Pierce of the Organized Crime Program is undercover with a Philadelphia syndicated that is smuggling in conflict (blood) diamonds. He can't wear a tracker or wire because he would be immediately killed if caught. They want to use K-9s to track him when he is sent on a drop. After practicing a few times, they take on the case, but it is dangerous and risky due to number of criminals and others involved. McCord, is also around using his investigative skills and journalistic contacts to help with the investigation. When he misses a check in, the team is not on a rescue mission as well.

Under Pressure is the 6th book in the FBI K-9 series. Although each case in solved in each book, the character development and relationships continue throughout the series, so I recommend reading the series in order if you want the full story of the recurring characters. I found this story to be extremely interesting. There was information in the book about "blood/conflict" diamonds, which was interesting but not overwhelming. The use of Lacy and Hawk to trail someone was different and I'm not sure if it is possible or a technique that was used in real cases, but it added suspense to the story. As always, there was a lot of action and the story moved quickly. The danger they were facing made the story even more gripping, especially as they raced to save McCord, and had me listening intently to see what would happen next. The characters, both human and canine, make this series for me. They recur in the stories and I enjoyed seeing them again. We also get to see their personal lives, Meg and Webb, Cara (Meg's sister) and McCord and their parents. In a previous book, Lacy had been injured, so it was great to see her back in this book. Another great story that I don't hesitate to recommend if you enjoy a good police procedural with K-9 partners. I have been listening and enjoying the audiobooks narrated by Susan Bennett. She has an easy listening voice, adding expression where needed. Her voices are good, but the male voices all have a bit of a similarity. However, with this book, I never had a problem knowing who was speaking at the time. I recommend any format for this one.

Active till the end

Mob, diamonds, family, dogs, romance, friendship, and undercover work. This story was entertaining and captivating from start to finish. The anxiety I felt for McCord was real and I loved how the story built that up. Webb and Meg were adorable and still great together even with all the danger and stress of their professions. Cara is always so calm, with her sister and boyfriend and their professional antics I am in awe. The time at their parent’s rescue was touching and I enjoyed the flashback to the previous case with Emma. As always the dogs stole the show and I love Hawk and how much he loves his family.

Interessante quanto ho scoperto sui blood diamonds: qualcosa avevo sentito dire, ma altre cose erano a me sconosciute.

I really liked the out of the box thinking of how the dogs were used in this one. It made sense once it was explained and was a good way of tracking the bad guys without seeming to. Of course it helped having the undercover guy to give them a starting spot.

There were times that things got hairy for Meg and those working with her. Some very close calls, but there were protocols in place that helped protect those that needed it. So while people got hurt, they were at least alive to fight another day.

hope this series continues for a long time! This sixth in the series is breathtaking, exceeding my expectations. Primary characters continue to grow personally and professionally and are very well defined. The case is complex and dangerous, and those involved know their lives are in jeopardy if any part of the plans goes awry. Despite the calm opening of this thriller, the high-intensity scenes are more heart-racing than in earlier novels.

We see a few of the many levels of partnerships among law enforcement professionals that help make this series what it is. I absolutely love FBI handler Meg and her canine partner/ human scent dog, Hawk, as well as FBI handler Brian and his canine partner/ human scent dog, Lacey. The love Meg and Brian have for their dogs makes them far more than working partners. As two of the four canine teams in the FBI Human Scent Evidence group, Meg and Hawk are at their best when partnered with Brian and Lacey.

Brian and Meg’s help has been requested for a different cross-department effort than has been tried in the past. Kate Moore, who they have worked with in another capacity, is working with those in the Diamond Trafficking Program. Blood, or conflict diamonds smuggled into the country will soon be delivered to the Philadelphia mafia for distribution. Pierce, an agent from the Philly office, has been deep undercover in the mob to help coordinate the units to take down those who are responsible for getting the diamonds from Africa to the street. It would dramatically reduce the demand in Philly, thus ending a source of income for the warlords and the cost in human rights violations. Pierce never knows before a delivery where it will take place. Meg and Brian and their dogs would track their undercover agent to where the deliveries would take place. The agents could arrest whoever is buying, Pierce, and the soldier he is partnered with.

While it is a valuable and noble assignment, there are downsides. One is that if Brian, Meg, or the dogs are recognized as law enforcement, the soldiers or enforcers would not hesitate to shoot the dogs, then the handlers. Pierce would receive similar or worse punishment, including torture. To Brian and Meg, it is simple. Yes, their dogs can do it. Yes, they’re all in. Despite the risk.

Meg and Todd, a firefighter/ paramedic, are well-matched off the job partners. They understand the pressure and danger the other faces every day and accept it. Meg and her sister Cara have been the closest of friends and housemates until recently, when they moved into a duplex with the guys they love. Cara, a dog trainer, and Clay, an investigative reporter, are also well-matched partners. Meg’s job has, at time, required the help of Todd, Clay, Cara, or all three. Meg and Clay have been working partners with regards to Meg’s cases. They have an agreement in which he helps with research in exchange for an exclusive when the FBI is ready to release it.

Clay has been doing extensive research on a new project they hadn’t yet discussed. When they do, he learns that he is definitely on to something. They are both working on the illegal diamond trade but from different angles. Clay knows the risks inherent with researching mob business, but he will not put his life on the line for a story. As Clay works the story both from his angle and with information important to the FBI, Brian and Meg hone the process of timely tracking the deliveries being made.

Every step of the way demonstrates the personalities of the characters. We see those traits and history whether they are on or off the job. The beginning of the novel only seems to start out a little slow. The stage is being set for the more edge-of-the-seat, terrifying moments of this thriller, especially when they learn there is a leak in the FBI. The tension reaches unbelievable intensity when circumstances go very wrong. This is a breathtaking thriller in which I again learn new challenges faced by law enforcement and crimes they address. The ending is very satisfying, and I highly recommend this and other novels in the series!

Under Pressure – Sara Driscoll

FBI Special Agent Meg Jennings and her K9 Hawk are back as she and her partner Brian & K9 Lacey are asked to assist in an ongoing smuggling case. Lacey, still recovering from a cougar attack in their last case, is just returning to service, as Meg and Brian find themselves both summoned to the Directors office to learn that they are being loaned to the Organized Crime Program in hopes of assisting the agency tasked with discovering and stopping the cartel responsible for the infiltration of blood or conflict diamonds into the US trade.

The Gov’t agencies have managed to infiltrate the cartel with an agent who has worked his way up and into the smuggling ring. A fellow agent, Kate, who has seen Hawk and Lacey in action on prior cases, is hoping that team can use the dogs to assist in tracking the individual making the diamond hand offs – learning their patterns and methods, and ultimately catching them in the act.

As Hawk and Lacey prove they are up to the task, key players in the are identified. A chance sighting almost leads to a nab of an enforcer by Meg & Hawk, bur he ultimately gets away, only to show up in the Megs home overnight with the intent to kill her. Only Hawk’s warning and her quick action allow her to prevail – and her assailant is taken into custody - but how did he know where to find her so quickly?

Meanwhile, Clay McCord, respected newspaper reporter and partner of Meg’s sister Cara, has also been researching the cartel on the sly, hoping for an expose. When he misses a pre-arranged 12 hour check in, Cara notifies Meg and her team quickly assemble in hopes of finding some idea of what has befallen him – but will they find him in time??

I absolutely love this series, and the K9’s who star in these pages, along with their handlers who love them. These are books that once picked up, cannot be put down - they’re that good! Sara Driscoll has a winning combination in this series, with all the action, suspense, and intrigue that you could want! Now…the long wait until the next is written begins…

I received this book as an Advance Reader Copy from #Netgalley & Kensington Press in exchange for an objective review.

Read my full review on Rosepoint Publishing.

Meg Jennings and her black lab, Hawk, always brings a smile to my face as I get to greet an impressive, independent old friend once again and live vicariously the choreographed work between handler and K9.

In this well-plotted narrative, Meg and Hawk as well as their handler partner Brian and his K9 are asked to work outside their usual Search and Rescue team when they are requested to work a cross-division collaboration involving a Philadelphia syndicate. They are hoping the dogs will be able to track the players responsible for the buys of conflict diamonds hitting the local market.

Timing is key. But Meg is made and she is attacked shortly thereafter. Then an unofficial member of their team goes missing.

The novel never flags, slows down, no sags in the middle. There are action packed scenes, the dogs are in the thick of it, and the tension ramps up as further discoveries are made and pieces come together.

I love how the authors strike a perfect balance between the lives of the main characters and their service animals with that of the current operation.

The conclusion, gritty and gripping, is satisfying. The novel is an easy one to fly through—you don’t want to put it down!

I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author(s) and publisher that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts.

I like this series very much. It is well written and basically a procedural that covers the use of dog handlers in police investigations. I like Meg and Cara as well as Webb and Brian and all of the main characters. They are an excellent team who make sure they have each other's backs.
FBI handler Meg Jennings and her K-9 partner, Hawk, are drawn into a case that involves a fortune in uncut gems, and an enemy whose power and ruthlessness know no bounds...

And when one of their own gets caught in the line of fire, the team embarks on a desperate rescue mission, knowing that mere seconds are all that separate life and death...
