It’s “Borgias fanfiction with fake Catholic aesthetics” + isekai + body theft… and absolutely no interest in the woman whose body gets stolen.
Another mean, emotionally abusive white haired dude with the emotional intelligence of a rock, he’s also absurdly tall and the “strongest” warrior because of course he is. They always are. Then there’s the tiny, fragile and useless FMC who has actually been reincarnted in the body of the heroine… basically usurping her body (that’s an horror story). This one has also been abused in her past and in her new life because that’s the easy way to make the FMC compliant and a pushover (while being passive-aggressive), and the author doesn’t have to bother with a personality or goals. And of course, they will never challenge the MMC when it counts.
Seems in South Korea there is a strong social pressure on women to be obedient, pure, suffering... and forgiving. These stories export that mentality with a Westernized aesthetics (Korean fantasy especially loves to borrow from Catholicism) making it "universal" and disguised as "epic romance."
At least “What’s wrong with you, Duke?” had charming characters and a non-abusive love interest. Here, it’s just the same tropes we all known (and I hate) without the charm. Being “cold” and “stoic” is just an excuse to not give the MMC a personality, I guess. The worst part is that Izek’s backstory HAS ton of potential for a complex character, but he is demoted to “mean love interest” and later “Ruby lovebot” (why does he even love her? The story doesn’t tell us). The original heroine, the one the “Isekai Ruby” stole the body from, is ten times more interesting than the random, dull Korean woman who only cries every chapter. Sadly, we will never get to see her story.
All of these otome Isekais manwhas/webnovels are really nothing more than a “patriarchy kink” at their core:
“You weren't good enough as a woman. Another will come to live your life and do it better. Because she will be more submissive, prettier, more understanding, more functional to men."

Manhwa version:
I need to be honest, at the beginning I didn't like most of the characters and I had mixed feelings about the general story. Also, at first I really disliked Izek because he was too aloof and seemed not to care at all. He also neglected Ruby in so many ways. But, after chapter 40, he definitely redeemed himself so I'm glad i gave this a chance and didn't drop it when I was feeling uncertain about the whole story :)

I actually read the manhwa first. But since it's still ongoing, I decided to read the novel because I started to like to manhwa. Does not disappoint. T.T Popo, my boi, you da best monster sidekick. <3

I am currently at chapter 55.
𝐁𝐄𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐄! 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬...
The novel starts off sensational, it has background, it has strategy on the part of the protagonist, the girl is a logical woman who connects everything that happens around her as a method of survival. She is exactly like Katherine Pierce but much more moral and adorable.
But now, what happens with Izek's character (her husband)?
Well, in the original novel (the novel Ruby read before she died in the helicopter in her past life) she reflected that the man who would be her husband was "like iron", cold, distrustful and a spiritual ascetic. But since Ruby comes into his life, it seems that his ascetic convictions disappear completely, in fact, these behaviors are noticed from the 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 moment they are seen, disrespecting all the religious ideology of the character under the pretext of "He is not really an ascetic, he became so because of the death of his mother but in reality he's a liberal".
And do you know why everyone now thinks he is "liberal"? For arriving with an exotic suit where he showed all his muscles in a formal event!!!! WTF! Since when does dressing up showing some skin make you have a political ideology?
Some other unnecessary fillers I'm annoyed with is the whole Ivan and Adymion thing, the accompanying paladins who have absolutely no function other than being side characters that distract the protagonist so the poor guy has something to do. Ivan also has a little sister who only serves to play with Ruby to make everyone see that she is good and kind.
And as I said before, the beginning of the story is fantastic, I could really feel a real Lucrezia Borgia disputing with the real Prince Cesar. But the story started to be hell for me since chapter 40.
Izek plunges into a delirium of emotions that at first glance we would say he's a good guy since he feels pity and compassion for Ruby, but nope. The writing is so obsessed with letting us know that what he feels is not pity or empathy,𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄, 𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐈𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄, there is no other explanation.
Another point I hated, is that when Freya is poisoned, everything points to Ruby possibly being the culprit, but what happens next? That our beautiful Ruby is kidnapped by a platypus-rabbit (YES, a rabbit). And from there EVERYONE begins to love Ruby unconditionally and forgets about poor Freya's serious illness. Ellenia (Izek's sister) starts to have a totally irrational grudge against her even though she was her lifelong friend. And we are not told any explanation as to why this happens.
Other stupid things happen as well, like organizing a party for her, she is the guest of honor (no idea why, it just happens), they invest a ton of money to build her a flower nursery, a "sensual" dance happens between Ruby and Izek that instead of provoking gave me cringe, after this Ruby gets lustful out of nowhere and wants to sleep with her husband but OH SURPRISE, she heard someone talking bad about her and she started to cry.
Anyway, a character that I thought was so beautiful to begin with turns into a complete 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐮𝐞 in just 40 super short chapters.

Maybe a bit lower than 3 stars? So far this is one of those stories that's just the female lead being physically and emotionally beat up and misunderstood over and over again. As the male lead hates or tolerates her until he magically sees that she's being treated like shit (even by himself) and realizes that he cares about her. Ya know, that toxic bullshit. I usually see this in historical romance novels. Not that often I find it in manga/manhwa. But the art is really nice and in this case I'm curious enough about her growing sense of her own power (I am NOT rooting for her to get with the male lead) that I keep reading. I want to see her break out of this hellhole situation she's been forced into and live freely for herself. So that's something.

I think this story started out sad and revolting at first, but by the end of this volume I am so so so confused with all these monsters appearing left and right. I don't know what direction this story is going in anymore. Honestly, I want to see more of Ruby "getting her husband on her side" but instead i'm being flooded with chapters about these monsters that I really don't know how they relate to this story. Hoping the next volume can ease my confusion.

This manhwa was super nice and breezy and I certainly enjoyed it as it was light and easy to read. I’ve had a lot of dark reads these past few weeks so it was nice to finally change things up again.

I should give up the romantasy Korean web novels. Just a pile of garbage, honestly. I recommend sticking with manhwa adaptations, they manage to extract some coherence out of these messes.

Jsem na rozpacích. Já vážně nevím, jak to ohodnotit. Kdybych nezačala číst mangu, tak bych se do novely nikdy nepustila. (Jen se koukněte na tu překrásnou kresbu!) ↓↓
Vrhla jsem se na novelu, protože jsem doufala, že tam bude více scén, myšlenek a vysvětlení pár mých otázek, ale... nestalo se. Je to tak 50:50. Něco se mi více objasnilo až po přečtení novely (jedna věc), ale manhwa zase více rozebrala situaci, která byla v novele popsána jednou větou.
Korejci (možná celkové Asiati) mají takový zlozvyk... Píší příliš přímé řeči bez jakéhokoliv narativních výpovědí. X_X Takže tam máte rozhovor dvou lidí, ale vy vůbec nevíte kdo s kým mluví nebo kde se vůbec nacházejí.
Nechce se mi to tady všechno vypisovat a popisovat, takže to napíšu v bodech (plusy a mínusy):
+ obsahuje závažnější témata, které jsem v KN ještě nikdy neviděla: rasismus, bulimie
+ velmi dobře se tu pracuje s životním traumatem (domácí týraní, "ideální dcera")
+ jelikož jde o fan-překlad, tak tam byla jedna scéna vysvětlena (kdyby nebyla, vůbec bych ji nepochopila)
+ postupně poznáváme a zjišťujeme proč jsou vedlejší postavy tak chladné a odtažité
+ děj rychle utíká (výhoda malé popisů)
- příliš přímé řeči
- málo popisů prostředí, někdy i žádné
- ich-forma (tohle je takový korejský zlozvyk, všechno píší v ichformě, ale zároveň je tam hodně věcí popisováno objektivně nebo i věci, co vypravěč nemůže vidět)
Ale tohle je zatím jen první díl, ještě mám před sebou 3 (z toho třetí a čtvrtý ještě nejsou přeložené celé 🙈 )

Review for chapter 1-chapter 22:
If you're looking for a strong and capable heroine, forget this one. This manhwa (based on a webnovel) has mixed reviews since people don't like FL's meek attitude, but it's understandable, considering her situations.
Ruby, the FL, has lived twice, suffering from family abuse in both lives. Though raised in prestigious family in both lives, they mistreat her while still maintaining that lovey dovey facade from outsiders. I'm not a fan of melancholic story, but this manhwa depicts about depression and its consequences really well. Victim of abuse doesn't easily trust people, they always try to please others and avoid conflict in hope that people won't abandon them. It's sad.
The ML doesn't help either (at least until chapter 22, he doesn't do anything significant to help FL, but he starts to realise that there is something wrong with his wife). He begins to notice how Ruby's eyes shake frightenly in contrary to her overexcited love confession, how sometimes her trauma gets triggered. ML also doesn't hate her, he just doesn't care about her at all, at least at first. Hopefully as the story progressed, he will start to take care of her and heal her trauma. I've read the spoilers and *fingerscrossed* he would be head over heels in love with her in the future and Ruby's happiness will be his only priority. Can't wait for that moment to come! Meanwhile for now, Ruby has to endure mistreatment from ML's family maid and Freya that manipulative b*tch.

Okay so, I've seen a few tiktoks fangirling about this manhwa but I'm not a big fan of it so far. Maybe it's because I've already read so many great manhwas with an energetic girl getting into an arranged marriage with a cold duke or whatever so I have big expectations but... It just wasn't it.
The main character seriously confuses me and so does the pacing of the book. One frame she's crying and having a panic attack because of her PSTD and the next frame she's all happy and perfect with her husband. This happens so many times. Like she's crying and then all of a sudden she's okay out of nowhere.
Also it really annoys me how EVERYTHING goes wrong for her for either no reason at all or just her stupidity. Horse race? Nope, sabotaged and almost died. Trying to give a gift to her husband? Nope, it starts raining, her dress is ruined, and the gift is ruined. Trying to walk away from someone? Falls. How does one have that much bad luck? Please give me at least one scene where something goes right for this girl.
And I know I'm only 22 chapters in, so my opinions could definitely do a 180... but can we please not overlook the toxicity in their relationship right now? Yeah, I know its an arranged marriage and the whole point of the plot line is that 'he has a soft spot for her' but please. Why would you yell at my girl right after she had a panic attack because you care for her?
That's all I wanted to share really. I'm sure I'll like it a lot more when I continue it.

Я вирішила що цій манхві можна виділити відгук. Дівчата це капєц (така в мене реакція на більшість манхв, особливо там де є аристократія і переродження, та море проблем)
Швидко прочитала, неможливо відірватися. Це було складно, далі теж буде, але сподіваюсь не на стільки.
Попри складні теми..я навіть плакала від сміху 😅 2 рази якщо бути точним
кінець просто чудовий! так і хочеться читати далі, дякувати, що я почала читати коли вже був 2 том - моє спасіння (а так як я вже дочитала 2 том - я плачу і чекаю продовження, але 3 том вже скоро розпочнеться 😋)
хоч в нас тут є насильство і багато усього не хорошого, відчуття лише теплі.

А КОЛИ ВІН ПОЧАВ ПОСМІХАТИСЯ ААААААААА ЯКЩО ХТОСЬ ЧУВ КРИКИ НАПЕВНО МОЇ.
Рубі не відпустила усі свої травми, але більше відкрилася йому, вже на кінець ми бачимо, що вона щиро посміхається, починає говорити коли щось хоче. це тільки підкреслює, що вона робить це вже не для виживання, а тому що вона дійсно цього хоче. те, як вони розвиваються і змінюються заради одне одного... це неймовірно.
Я вирішила що цій манхві можна виділити відгук. Дівчата це капєц (така в мене реакція на більшість манхв, особливо там де є аристократія і переродження, та море проблем)
Швидко прочитала, неможливо відірватися. Це було складно, далі теж буде, але сподіваюсь не на стільки.
Попри складні теми..я навіть плакала від сміху 😅 2 рази якщо бути точним
кінець просто чудовий! так і хочеться читати далі, дякувати, що я почала читати коли вже був 2 том - моє спасіння (а так як я вже дочитала 2 том - я плачу і чекаю продовження, але 3 том вже скоро розпочнеться 😋)

Podría fácilmente darle 5* porque amo esta novela, y me he leído el cómic como cien veces, pero mi rabia por la poca justicia que le hicieron a detalles muy importantes (en mi opinión) de la historia es más grande. Hubieron centenares de cosas que Ruby ocultó y nunca se volvió a hablar de ello en toda la novela, personajes secundarios con mucho potencial que fueron fácilmente descartados o dejados de lado —me estoy quejando de la injusta muerte de Enzo, no porque lo hayan matado, pero porque su muerte parecía sin propósito al ver la poca importancia que se le dió — le dieron una buena base a un grupo bastante extenso de personajes secundarios para que al final lo único que se mostró fue como la pareja principal se casaba y tenía al niño con complejo de mami más marcado que he visto en algunos años.
El trastorno alimenticio de Rudbeckia y como este afectaba su vida es algo con lo que he conectado desde la primera vez que toqué esta historia y me causa mucho conflicto la manera en la que eso también fue descartado, quiero decir, ¿Iske nunca se animó a hablar sobre esto con su esposa? No digo que él tuviera que arreglar este problema, pero cuando tu ser amado está pasando por algo de esta magnitud y decides quedarte callado para no crearle disconformidad, estuvo totalmente bien cuando apenas se enteró, pero luego se volvió un hueco argumental (para mí), parece que Ruby se curó por el poder del matrimonio imperial y la corona real xdxdxd qué desperdicio de recursos (yo después de decir que adoro la novela).

i fell headfirst into this story and it was an easy 4-star read for me. the found family ruby builds with her in-laws, the knights, and her monster friends? absolutely everything. and izek… easily my fave ml out of every webnovel and manhwa i’ve read this year. i genuinely cannot explain the chokehold this man has on me. yes, he looks like he could glare someone into dust, but underneath all that? he’s not just a green flag, he’s a whole green forest. the standard. the bar. the blueprint.
the communication between ruby and izek isn’t perfect, but it’s real. they sit down and talk things out like actual adults and honestly i love them for that. they deserve each other in every universe.
this story also dives into some heavy themes, so parts were tough to read, but it’s worth pushing through because it lets you see the real depth behind the characters, especially ruby. that girl has been through hell, and i’m so glad she finally found love that wasn’t twisted or obsessive like that vile creature caesar. i hated him with my entire soul. enzo? i wish we got more of him. his part broke my heart and he deserved better too. and freya… i despised her, but i’ll give her credit for owning up to her mess. still not forgiving her fully though.
overall, ruby and izek deserve the whole world. they’re such a soft, solid couple. and izek (my king), thank you for being the man of my actual dreams. may i one day find a man who gives even half the energy you do. 🛐🩶

Me gustó mucho esta primer temporada del manwha, realmente creí que me decepcionaría porque al inicio sentí muy floja la historia, me aburría pero seguí leyendola porque estás historias siempre se ponen buenas y efectivamente eso sucedió.
Ruby era un imán para los desastre en cuanto se mudo al norte, los monstruos no la dejaban descansar y ni hablar de Freya y Lorenzo, casi me sacan canas ese par!! Pero le dieron una lección a Lorenzo y Freya anda quieta desde en accidente que tuvo.
Me gustó como fue evolucionando la relación de Izuku y Ruby, verdaderamente que lindo.
Cómo de pensar que él la quería lejos y la odiaba pasaron a amarse tan bonito. 😭❤️
Espero el hermano deje de entrometerse porque como me cae tan mal! Su obsesión protectora me enferma y no hablar del resto de la familia de la protagonista, igual de desgraciada que la que tuvo en su primer vida.
Ame el final, termino tranqui, con amor y todo lindo sin suspenso ni desastre JAJAJAJA me alivia pero me asusta.

Karakterler arasındaki iletişim sorunları beni artık çok yormaya başladı. İki tarafın da bakış açısını gördükten sonra "konuşun ve çözün artık" diyorum kendi kendime sürekli. halledilmeyecek bir şey değil çocuklar. Ruby'nin geçmiş hayatlarında yaşadığı istismar, taciz ve şiddet döngüsü insana kapana kısılmış hissettiriyor. Kimseye kendisini açamıyor. Problem çıkmasın diye her şey yolunda gibi davranıyor. Sürekli herkesi memnun etmeye çalışıyor. Zihninin arka planında "azarlanmamak" için hep bir şeyler düşüyor. O rezil abisinin kurtlar düşsün peşine ya. Ne rezil ne iğrenç biri çıktı

This beautiful book means everything to me. A story about trauma, what it makes us into, and healing from it.
Although I don't have the same trauma Ruby has, I liked how the author showed Ruby's changed behaviour in response to it. Confessing to things she didn't do so as to avoid punishment, being unable to say what really happened because there's a bone-deep belief no one will believe her, anyway. It made me feel related to, in that there are probably such maladaptive behaviours in me, too.
Would really love to rewrite the story with the original timeline.

This book is really interesting and the manhwa art is beautiful but it's also hard to read since fl only know abuse even in her past life and know nothing about love especially from family members. I admire fl for how strong and determined she is to survive but my heart also aches for her. Izek is.. not bad, he's interesting and he's pretty perceptive, he can pick up something from fl behavior. He just not used to showing his affection, he's a tsundere with a gentle and kind heart but also scary if you become his opponent. I'm really curious to know how the story would evolved.

This comic had a huge potential, but the author definitely didn't know how to approach such serious topics. It was really frustrating and confusing to see her so terrified of so much things, and could not understand if this was from her past life or her current life.
Nonetheless, besides that it was a good comic, seeing them start to get along, her becoming more confident, etc. Loved it!

It starting to focus too much on the romance. I wanted to try this because I thought it'd be interesting to read a story where the fl actually is effected by her trauma, because usually the trauma is just ignored. But it starting to feel like a cliche historical romance and I don't want to waste my time.
