Heart in the Highlands

Rate this book
An arranged marriage was never what Callum Darrington, future Duke of Edinbane, imagined for himself. But with the well-being of his uncle’s family hanging in the balance, Callum strikes a bargain with his father and reluctantly agrees to tie himself to a stranger. The reality of the lovely Lady Katherine is more than he could have hoped for, and their wedding heralds a bright new future for the couple—until Callum discovers his father deliberately deceived him. Callum lashes out, setting in motion heartbreak not even he could have foreseen.

Four years later, Callum is ready to piece together the marriage he so carelessly destroyed. But their years apart have hardened Kate: she is not the naive and trusting young woman she once was, and she has no intention of allowing Callum a foothold in her life or her heart. Despite her coldness, Callum works to regain her trust and rebuild their marriage, not realizing Kate harbors a secret that could change everything—and this time, there is much more at stake than just her
heart.

"Love is brave. And bold. It provides no guarantees. True love gives, without expecting anything in return. When you learn to love someone in all their imperfections, only then will your heart truly be full."

Once in a while, you simply need an agonizing read to wreck your soul in tatters and then replace you back together with heartwarming characters, seeking for forgiveness by eroding the barrier between their past and present mistakes..

"Callum loved this land and its people. No matter how hard life was, they fought for it with everything they had."

The story was set in the early nineteenth century, the locations were an interesting contrast between the rainy Scotland, stormy England and the tropical, sunny Caribbean.

"What kind of hatred went so deep that one could sever ties to all one held dear? "

Callum and Kate, the protagonists, were mingled into an arranged marriage —pulled without their consent— by their families. The story engaged soft and lovely, with them liking and enjoying the company of each other. Up until Callum decided that his loathe toward his father should cost him his life and happiness and by that erasing anything that symbolized his dad’s evil hold on him, including Katie. The very next day they got married he abandoned his Highland’s life for the warmth of the Caribbeans and only returned four and half years later.

" He’d thought by flouting everything his father had wanted, he’d find a measure of fulfillment. But the victory was hollow, and any sense of satisfaction was overshadowed by all he’d lost. The cost of that long-ago choice seemed only to mount."

Kate’s forgiveness wasn’t so easily earned by Callum and the only exceptions she made at the beginning were for their daughter, Charlotte. The devoting mother-image suited Katie perfectly and added so much appeal to their love story. She always putted her first in any decision she made about including Callum again in her/their life after his trahison and so did he. Their chemistry throughout the storyline was well done filled with hatred and moments of weakness, stolen glances and touches, eye watering declarations. Charlotte personage was so well portrayed with spelling mistakes and a vivid personality, a lovely bond with her oh-so-hated-grandfather. Every side character had his/her importance in the storyline.

"Four and a half years is a long time tae be away.” He spoke slowly, his words measured. “Long enough to mend old wounds.” He gave Callum a meaningful look. “Or perhaps create deep rifts."

Somethings that didn’t set right about the storyline. First, what Callum did was unforgettable and Katie had her own part, too. She didn’t inform him in the first place that she was pregnant, he was sending her letters for all those four and half years but she kept throwing them without reading any. She was hurt and humiliated, this was completely understandable but it still didn’t change the fact the whole thing wasn’t right.
In the synopsis, a terrible secret is mentioned but Katie didn’t feel bad or evoke any thoughts about it until near the end of the story. It felt like it was just added to drag a little bit the ending. Finally, Callum and his dad relationship hadn’t a final and satisfying ending, maybe it was intentional to give a more realistic aspect to the story but if even Kate and Charlotte were apt to forgive him, why couldn’t he do the same with his father?

"
How could such love cause such pain?
A desolate fog pressed down on her heart, her love for him an agony that threatened to crush her. "

" And my heart is yours, Katie. Broken and bent as it is, it beats only for ye. "

The writing was flawless and addicting with well caricatured scenes and detailed feelings. The story was mostly enjoyable with a charming and emotional love story about forgiveness and belongings. I didn’t see myself giving it less than 4 stars.❤️

It was a beautifully written second chance story.

Callum leaves after his wedding night for four and a half years. When he finally returns, tries to get Kate to forgive him, but how could she?

Be warned:

- Set in beautiful Scotland. Yes, I got you there, nobody can resist that.

- Historical but set in 1814

- No smut. Noope sire. I know here I lose half of my friends

- No redheads, which is a shame because they are the greatest treasure of humanity.

It drags a little bit in the last 30% for my liking. But it was still a enjoyable and beautiful ride.

“I’d come to expect that if I waited to love someone until they were perfect. I’d never love anyone at all”

I completely adore this book and it is simply not one to be missed.

It is heart rendering and emotional and I was gone from page 1. I felt Kate in all her loneliness, and her grief in wanting to be held and loved. I felt Callums bone aching despair and reveled in his growth at his realization to the hurt his actions had caused

This is not solely a romance. It is about forgiveness and healing in those who feel they do not deserve it. It is about broken vows and knowing perfect love is simply unattainable because we fall for imperfect people.

Kate is a warrior of a woman with a soft vulnerability that brings her character to life. The growth between these two characters is real and raw. The chemistry is ever present. They never act like they are supposed to because that what makes them all the more relatable. This book made me cry, warmed my heart and will forever have it’s place upon my shelves.

Heidi has created a story that is as heavy and beautiful as the highland fog itself. I was transported to Scotland without ever stepping on a plane and I hope you will be too.

New author for me, and I was quite pleased with this one. While the hero at his groveling best, was a bit too good to be true, I still managed to love him. And the heroine, just a tad too righteous for my taste, ended up screwing things up just enough to make me smile. The author did a decent job with the Scots speak, and especially with little Charlotte's character. Yep, happy with this one. Good writing. Sweet romance.

It was an okay ish story, but not necessarily to my liking.

I didn't had much enjoyment reading this, but considering that I payed for the book, I had to at least finish it 😅.

The Hero didn't give 2 shillings for the heroine, leaving her for almost 5 years after their wedding night. And the motive behind his decision was a really stupid one, sorry but I couldn't buy it, especially for leaving for so long.

He could have sent someone in person to see if she is OK, but no, he sent some letters and we have to forgive him. From my pov after we were presented in the story he didn't redeem himself after all Kate went through in all those years. Too bad divorce wasn't a thing back then. 😅

Well, I couldn't warm up with the Hero at all and that didn't let me enjoy the story more.

✨Heart in the Highlands✨

Firstly, HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!! I devoured this book and stayed up way past midnight to finish it. I couldn’t put it down!

There are some books I struggle writing reviews for solely because I fear my words will fall short. Like how taking a picture of something beautiful only showcases a portion of its splendor.

That’s Heart in the Highlands. You have to experience this gem for yourself, this treasure of a book. Anything I say will just be but a glimpse of its beauty, but I will try.

I felt like I was in Scotland, and though I’ve never been, I can’t help but feel like I have now. The dialogue. The customs. The accents. The scenery. Literally everything set the tone of this novel so well.

And the characters. I grieved alongside them. There was never a moment where I felt that an action or conversation was out of place or forced. I was amazed at Heidi’s ability to capture it so perfectly. I LOVE both Callum and Kate so much. It’s rare for me not to be bothered in some way by a character, but it’s true. I found myself breaking alongside both of them and then cheering them on.

And the redemption arc? It’s so well done. This story is definitely more than strictly just a swoony romance. It’s deep, heart-wrenching, convicting, sobering, and uplifting all at once.

I now count this among not only one of my favorite books of 2021, but one of my favorites of all time. @authorheidikimball, I’m amazed by your craft. Please keep writing, forever and always.

In the simplest terms, Heart in the Highlands is unmissable. Heidi Kimball has crafted something so uniquely touching and emotionally stirring, it’s hard to find words to describe how sensational this story is. Callum’s growth is wonderfully portrayed—I knew from the beginning he had some major work ahead of him to change my opinion, and he certainly did. Kate is also a great character whom readers will easily relate to.

After reading this masterpiece, I feel like I can’t be greedy and ask for more, but I really do hope we get Charlotte’s story one day. Kimball’s writing is something truly special, and I just can’t wait for more from her. Anyone who enjoys historical romance absolutely cannot miss Heart in the Highlands! 5/5 stars

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILERS

I am convinced the characters in this book are real. Heidi Kimball has brought them to life on the page. Here are just a few of the things I truly love about this book.

1. A gorgeous and real marriage of convenience. I love the romanticized versions we usually get in the genre... like, a lot. But THIS? It is raw and beautiful, and you feel as if you are living right there with them as they make their vows and then start to get to know each other as spouses. This is how I imagine the best marriages of convenience started out. Seriously Ms. Kimball, how did you get it all right?

2. Scotland. I mean, this speaks for itself.

3. Scotsmen. Not quite the same thing as number 2, and yes, they need their own bullet point.

4.The deep emotions. This book just may wreck you, be prepared. But also, it will brighten your day and have you sighing. Be prepared to be swept away.

So, yes--if you were wondering--you should definitely read this book.

As I was reading it, I was really enjoying the initial set up, the arranged marriage, the deep emotional pull between Callum and Kate. And then he left and it made me angry, but it was still plausible. I enjoy the initial reunion, learning Charlotte had been born (though I found Kate leaving Scotland less plausible because she would have essentially run away, but I was willing to suspend my disbelief). I really loved Callum realising his mistakes, them drawing closer etc. Charlotte was an utter delight and I adore her. I was definitely heading towards a 4 or 5 star review...and then right before the end of the novel: BOOM! TRAUMA! LIKE MASSIVE TRAUMA! Of having a child stillborn, and now Kate is barren. The timing was just so off. It was sort of resolved but off the page over the years of their marriage, maybe. I think the major issue is that the book already had intense, emotional, and traumatic themes, and then adding this final layer at that point in the novel, turned it into a soap opera, instead of the love and redemption the book was aiming for. The novel was also very Callum centred, and I think it also showed that the author trusted the readers just as little as Kate trusted Callum. If we as readers had had that glimpse into Kate, distraught, going through a difficult birth, on the page, earlier in the novel, I would have been more okay with it. It felt contrived to add another element of "he can only truly love Kate if she is barren, and his punishment is that he loses a son that he never even saw". It created melodrama where there didn't need to be melodrama. Added to the Deus Ex Machina nature of the father's stroke and super quick scene with Callum sort of forgiving his father, it just left me feeling cold. I waited a day before posting, trying to digest how I felt about the book, and this is my review. It isn't particularly glowing, and yes, it is critical, but this book could have been a lot longer to give justice to these themes and could also have centred Kate more than Callum in the story. I know that then pushes the novel closer to literary fiction perhaps, but heavily traumatic themes can't be casually dealt with in my opinion. I did eventually give the book a 3 star review.

I'm gobsmacked! In twitter-pated biblio heaven with mush for brains so excuse me while I ramble.

Whhhoooaaa -- my first Heidi Kimball book, but definitely not my last!!!

I was expecting a delicious marriage of convenience story and I got so much more! Emotionally churning, heart skipping, achingly romantic....I can't even...

It all starts with an abrupt marriage of convenience that goes terribly awry and then fast forwards to four years later when the errant groom returns to set things right only the spurned bride is having none of it. But it's so much more complicated than that.

I wanted to be furious at Callum, but I could only feel an aching sorrow for all he has endured and Kimball writes him in such a way that it's impossible not to understand the darkness that takes hold of him. And Kate! Her whole world turned upside down and inside out -- it was easy to see her side of things too. So there I was, the entire read, empathizing my heart out on behalf of them both! I was wrung out by the time I reached the end...and enjoyed every blessed second of Kimball's storytelling marvel matched with Noah Wall's impeccable narration. (Callum's Scottish lilt...I swoon just thinking about it!) Definitely an audible selection I will happily listen to again and again.

Heart in the Highlands is one of the most romantical love stories I've ever read! A redemptive story with depth and hope, it champions the power of forgiveness. Unforgettable.

I am so glad I discovered Ms. Kimballs books earlier this year, I have binged all of them and she's officially joined my Autobuy list. So, when I saw Heart in the Highland had finally released I couldn't wait to dive right in!

True to form, Ms. Kimball wove a delightful story that sucked me in from the beginning. I had a hard time putting it down and couldn't wait to see how everything would unfold. I loved the Scottish setting, the supporting cast was good, the plot was great and of course our leading characters Callum and Katie were so likable and you couldn't help rooting for them!

This was a sweet, captivating story that will keep you up late at night reading.

Kate and Callum meet the day before their wedding. It has been arranged through Kate's grandfather and (Callum's father, the Duke) who hopes she will one day find love with her intended.

Callum leaves after marrying Kate in a fit of anger towards his father, with who he has never seen eye to eye, and takes off to Barbados for over four years. Kate is heartbroken and with a child, but Callum doesn't find this out until he comes home. Kate doesn't trust Callum and he has to slowly earn Kate's trust which she doesn't just dole out. She makes him wait as he did to her. Even though I just wanted Kate to say, "Yes, I love you!" her stalling made this story more realistic.

I really enjoyed this!

“My heart is yours, Callum.” The pulsing beneath his palm was proof of the truth of her words.
What did a man say when he was offered all he’d ever wanted? He couldn’t speak. His chest expanded with hope, but he couldn’t let her confession go un-answered. “And my heart is yours, Katie. Broken and bent as it is, it beats only for ye.”

I knew that this book would hurt me early on and I was correct.

Kate and Callum were a marriage of convenience couple, but they had a lot of tension from the start. I really loved the two of them together, how they thought it might not be so bad after they met each other, it was all looking up.

But then Callum decided to leave FOR FOUR YEARS(!!!!) because he argued with his father...my problem with this is that his reason wasn't good enough, and he was old enough to know better. If he was a teen I'd be more willing to forgive him, but he was 26.

During that time Kate suffers by herself, and then EVENTUALLY Callum comes back, but not of his own accord, only because an urgent family matter called him back. And then, in my opinion, he didn't grovel enough for Kate to forgive him.

She didn't forgive him easily though, but most of the time he acted like everything should be okay now that he's back. He did, at least, redeem himself a bit by being a good father to Charlotte.

Charlotte was my favourite, she was sooo adorable, I can't wait to read her own book. And, I hope there's pirates too (I can dream).

I also loved the writing from the very first page, that was how I knew I'd enjoy it.

Surprisingly, as a second chance romance hater, this one worked for me. Other than Callum leaving, of course. But I don't know, I prefer this to every other second chance I've read, it was done so much better.

I could actually feel the pain Kate went through and cried with her. And I will say that she deserved so much more. But Callum is all we got, so I gotta learn to forgive him too. At some point. In the very distant future.

The setting was magically described, and it made me want to to visit Scotland. Some of the characters speaking in Scottish brogue helped to envision it better too.

Heidi Kimball is on my radar now, and I'm planning on checking out some of her other books as well.

Marriage in trouble is a go to for me and the premise here was why I jumped into this historical. Sadly the story didn’t work for me. I needed more chemistry between Kate and Callum and less description.
It started out ok but I felt there was so much unnecessary details that I slowly lost interest in the couple. I was bored.
Callum and his evolving relationship with his daughter Charlotte was precious but not enough to salvage the story for me.

I loved this book. I was sad it was over when I reached the end. Do you love marriage of convenience? Then read this book.

One of my favorite things about this book is the atmosphere. It rained a lot in this book, something I absolutely love in books and in real life.

I loved Callum and Katie and watching them fall in love. I am dying to know what happens to Charlotte now!

"I plight thee my troth."

If only every promise could be kept, every vow honored and every union proven steadfast, for while love is essentially brave and courageous, it is rarely perfect, nor was it truly meant to be. Tragically, Lady Katherine found herself and her future pledged to a man who, in spite of his intentions, and amorous affection, had broken her trust. Hopes and dreams had wilted within the shadows of loneliness as her extended grief over her husband's desertion, coupled with the loss of her beloved grandfather, followed Katie into every space of the picturesque cottage she had inherited. "Of one thing she was certain: she was utterly and completely alone."

Then along came Callum. Again. Her lawful husband. Lord Rowand. The future Duke of Edinbane. "What more could the man want?", than he had already taken, and that she had innocently given.

"Love is brave. And bold. And provides no guarantees. . . . . . When you learn to love someone in all their imperfections, only then will your heart truly be full."

Filled to the brim with raw, powerful emotions, the kind that send waves crashing along the shoreline sounding nature's mighty crescendo, Callum and Katie's journey back to wholeness is a beautiful thing to behold. Reminiscent of a sunset after the rain, its aftermath reflects the sanctity of marriage in all of its glory, as God created it to be. But reader beware; the journey is rocky, the stumbles numerous, and cold, dark corners resist being cleaned, notwithstanding a piece of artistry that holds fast to the safety of anonymity. . . . . nonetheless, "Heart in the Highlands" is one of the most romantic books that you will ever read!

This book was recommended to me several times in the last month and it was set in Scotland, a setting I love, so I decided to buy it. I had never read this author, but I consider my purchase money well spent.

Never have I seen the depths of characters’ emotions crafted so deeply and expertly. This one is well written, richly woven and is perfectly well done. The author’s descriptions of the beauty of Scotland wonderfully done. I enjoyed every single minute. I will surely read more by Heidi Kimball.

Spoiler alert: I love this story. I know I’m a little biased but I can’t help myself - I am so excited for you to meet Kate and Callum. From the moment this story popped into my head, I knew it was one I had to tell. It is by far the hardest book I’ve ever written, largely due to the fact that Kate and Callum’s love story involves more than just them. I hope I have accurately portrayed the love, laughter, anguish, and tender moments that come as a family is formed. I hope you will root for Callum despite his mistakes, treasure Katie despite the icy shield she protects herself with, and most of all, enjoy the unfolding of this unexpected love story.

It was refreshing to read a historical romance without smut, especially after recently being smothered with stories that equate love and chemistry almost entirely with physical attraction, often mistaking lust for love.

I expected to love this, I knew odds were very high, but what the what? This was astoundingly, overwhelmingly good.

Few things I love more in my romance reading than starting off a book with a hero who you know will royally mess up. He needs to put in the work, and I’m here for it. Scottish duke and English lady? Yes, please.

But how the tropes are woven in this achingly beautiful tale is so much more. You get both the reluctant hopefulness and sweet awkwardness of an unwanted arranged marriage and then the heart-clenching angst and tentativeness of an estranged marriage second chance. But then, in a way, there’s also everything you could love about a single parent romance. Plus grovel, grovel, oh my word, the grovel. As if that weren’t enough, little bit of peril rescue and caretaking from a twofer hero: strong, brawny, flirty Scot /competent, duty-bound, powerful aristocrat. Can confirm, the brogue comes out in full force. I’m telling you, Ms. Kimball gave it all.

How I relish masterful progression perfection. I was mentally slow clapping at the set-up, the jump, the push and pull, one step forward, two steps back, the reveals, the whole journey. Second chance where the hero is so at fault can be hard to pull off well- the mistake has to be borderline unforgiveable but just forgiveable enough. The suffering needs to fit the crime and yet you need to feel yourself softening towards him perfectly synchronized with our heroine’s struggle or it feels off. And it was pulled off and more. The drawing together, how they find ways to share insights into each other’s experiences, forgiving, healing and building trust again, just so wholeheartedly satisfying and beautifully written. I probably won’t be able to think of the second chance trope again without thinking of this sweeping love story, and I feel like I should get a stamp on my passport, it was that transporting. Loved it.

Note on content warnings: This book only has swoony kisses on page, but does deal with events and grief that merit content warnings for those that might be triggered. The content warnings would be extremely spoilery to how things are revealed, so I won’t include them here, but please, if you know there is some content that could be triggering to you, reach out to me or anyone who’s read it to make sure this won’t be the case here. I wholeheartedly recommend it and would say everything is very sensitively addressed and resolved, but just to be sure.

What was that!?! I just finished Heart in the Highlands and I am just at a loss. I think this book will mean more to those who've lived life and gone through some S**t. As a woman who has experienced SO much, I felt this book deep and on so many levels. However, its written so beautifully, that I think anyone could be wrapped up in it.

I started this story as an audio book, and I didn't know much about it. Scottland and highly recommend was all I had to go on and thank goodness! The surprise of the plot was everything I needed. For those wondering about the romance level, it is closed door. Now read it. I promise you'll love it. The Narration was lovely, and I LIVE for a good Scottish accent in an audio book. I wasn't disappointed.

THE ENDING! finally a book that ends with such satisfaction but also anticipation for the next book! You know a good author by the ending.

I don't want to go into details because I hope you'll go in blind like I did but believe me, Its worth your time.

4.5 stars! This historical romance had been on my TBR for a year and I finally got to it once my library had the audio available! I’m so glad I finally got to this one. The writing immediately pulled me in and was just such a lovely story and writing!

Basically this is an arranged marriage between an English heroine and Scottish hero. Their marriage is arranged by their fathers and they decide to go into the marriage with open hearts and minds once they meet. But after their wedding day, the hero ends up leaving for 4 years.

I loved that we got a second chance romance in here between the married couple. I really didn’t know much about this historical before starting, I just knew it had a gorgeous cover and I was excited to get to it. So I was surprised and thrilled that the romance has some of my fav tropes. This is a romance with no steam/closed door, which I knew before jumping in. I had a great time with this audio, was immediately pulled into the story and writing and just loved the characters.
