This play does a wonderful job of conveying the supreme sadness of the years after the many wars of the 20th century. It is rich in environment and pathos. The female character is mechanical but the Dyke character has to go through a minefield to achieve the catharsis in the piece. The final moment of the psalm is gratuitous though. It should end with just a call to hanging .
