“If I were wired to sense just one thing in this entire world, it would be the smell of you. Not flowers, not petrichor. Not liquid ink or pages of a new book. You. Just You. Filling all the spaces of my being.”
For Miris, her keen sense of smell has always been a blessing and a bane. For years, she has wrapped herself in seclusion to escape the dark memories of her past. When the mysterious death of her best friend sends her world crashing down, she finds herself in a dangerous quagmire of nostalgia and temptation as terrifying secrets emerge.
Then one day… she’s suddenly engulfed by his essence.
Roy, who she’d promised to love forever.
Roy, who was never supposed to come back.
Plunged into cyclic nightmares, Miris will have to navigate the haunted realms of hallucination and reality as help and deception arrive in unexpected forms.
Will Sam and Saira, her friendly neighbours become twin rays of the sunshine she craves or will they be consumed by her darkness?
Is this insanity? Or a sinister presence?
‘Linger, when you’re gone’, a unique psychological thriller packed with romance and suspense, will quicken your pulse and keep it racing!
Have you ever wondered how you would be if one of your senses were intensified? Would you still be like you are now, or would it imply that everything is modified & your life is altered? Those were my questions while reading the novel. I had never anticipated such an unusual tale could perhaps be created. The author's meticulous investigation & composing skill is very praiseworthy.
The book's cover is beautiful & one can indeed see this specific picture display in one of the scenes. It's the blurb & the book's title that immediately had me choose it. Narrated from the POV of Miris, our female lead, the book is an excellent amalgamation of love, suspense & thriller. Directly from the Prologue, it has one's interest. It's so rare that I see an enjoyable combination in the past & present situations.
The vocabulary employed is pretty intelligible, other than a few grammatical typos. The discussions are so vivid, it presents the tale in a really vigorous way. I so enjoyed reading this one that I completed in a couple of days. Overall, I liked the work & would recommend it to anyone who is a psychological thriller fan. It's a feast for your creative minds!
This book is brimming with the draw of Roy’s undying passion and Miris’s battle with a serendipitous gift. Miris is loved, too loved, and she also suffers from hyperosmia. For me, it was not just the story but also Chitra’s unique writing style that invoked buried sentiments. Yes, love can be overwhelming, and too bad it cannot be filed away once it sets in. It lingers on. The concluding page pushed out the tears I so held on to while reading this emotionally intoxicating story. How the story is narrated will beg you to understand the perspective of Roy as well. Miris’s Roy! Sam and Veenu were the currents of sweetness that lightened my mood a bit as the narrative flip-flopped between past and current times. Condensed and superb writing by the author. I encourage you to pick this one and strap your emotions in. For it will be a bumpy ride!
It’s a romantic psychological thrill genre book. Psychological thriller is my favourite genre so I had to pick it up. And turned out too different than usual ones. I will briefly summarise the blurb. Miris is the protagonist of the story. Sonam is her best friend. At the beginning of the story, she is struggling to overcome the loss of her brother Soham and her best friend Veenu helped her to overcome that loss. Miris is blessed with special abilities. She has a keen semse of smell. But later on when all of a sudden, she lost Veenu too from her life. What will she do? Due to her friend, she was pushed into dark and depressed life and struggling to overcome it. Roy, Shaira and Sam are another important characters. Read the book to know the importance of these characters. Will they help Miris to overcome it or push into more darkness. Read the book to unfold further plot. I liked the plot. It’s unique. Like we have read about traumatic phase when some family members or love interest passes away but for the first time I am reading about best friends. I liked how accurately author has portrayed psychiatrist illness with hallucinations and dark phases. It was interesting to read about it. I liked the narration style of the author, it’s crisp. The language of the book is lucid that way everyone can pick it up. Overall quite different and good read.
The Book "Linger When You're Gone", written by Chitra Padmana is A Psychological Thriller Story. The Plot is quite Intriguing. Each and every character is written beautifully.
The story revolves around Miris who has special ability. In the Beginning of the Story, Miris got into emotional turmoil by losing her best friend, Sonam. Somehow she is overcoming her condition but suddenly her boyfriend "Roy", came into her life again who died sometimes ago. Do read to know how and why Roy came in her Life.
The book has a beautiful cover. I loved the blend of colours and shadow that has been created. Fabulous presentation by the author. The book encompasses a thriller story with a romantic shade.
Beautiful literary words, scientific accuracy, well-structured plot, and a thriller that would actually make you feel fear. Author Chitra Padmana has done a fabulous job at writing this romantic psychological thriller. The plot unravels itself like petals of a thorny rose, both harsh and sublime at the same time. Seeding and revealing is timed perfectly, and that makes this book an unputdownable work of fiction. Not only the protagonist but all the characters of the book are so realistically created that one can visualise them as a real people while reading the book. Especially the antagonist who is so perfectly written that they might just haunt your dreams as the book reaches its final chapters. I have been searching for some work of Art that can actually scare me not with the gimmicks but with sensible content worthy of feeling afraid about. After a long search of many years, I found this book, and it fulfilled my desire of feeling genuine fear derived from good content. The protagonist is wonderfully designed in such a brilliant manner that everyone can find a part of themselves in here. And yet she would seem unique and out of this world. Although this is not particularly a science fiction novel, the author has got all the scientific aspects precise in it and seems to have researched heavily before writing the book. That is why a condition so rare and so foreign to us all, seems so realistic and personal while reading the book. The writing is of such poise and perfection that if the author had not declared it to be a debut novel, I would have assumed her to be a regular full-time writer. I feel glad to have been introduced to this book which I am sure would linger in my memory for a long time. I would certainly recommend this book to every reader out there, regardless of whether or not this is your usual genre.
This book was packed with beautifully evocative colours, smells, sights, sounds and woven through with emotion. The idea wasn't original but only if you've read 'Perfume'. And it might have evolved separately anyway.
The characters were generally solid and believable though some were stronger (in the development sense) than others.
There were some excellent pieces of moving interaction between characters whether tense or romantic, and plenty of tension and suspense in the plot.
For me, while the good bits were very good, the plot felt a little flakey and seemed a bit stuck together with paperclips and gum rather than the pieces fitting seamlessly. Therre were some grammatical flourishes which I felt added word-count and possibly took away quality.
Overall, fantastic imagery, great characters, average plot and maybe a little over-engineered. Would definitely recommend for a light transit-lounge / long-haul-leg read.
Each and every person has their own past which is filled with both joy & pain. However when it comes to bitter memories, pain of loosing our dear one's is more when compared to any other thing. When we not just loose a single person but constantly loose people whom we love, the way we break down is hard to imagine. Things still get worse when we know the reason behind suffering and are helpless being struck at one place. Moreover it is more scary when the reason is a person, someone we love the most.
"Linger You're Gone" is a story of Miris who has seen enough grief already in her life when it comes to loosing her family & love. Things add up when she comes to know about the death of her friend Veenu who always been a supporter. Miris could have just mourned but she being a strong personality decides to help police in the investigation through her special ability. Miris's life feels to be bit relaxing with the help of Sam and Saira but when the haunting past is chasing her, she feels trapped. Miris must overcome her past & fear before it eats up her life and the people who care for her. In order to do so, she must be brave to face it. Will she be able to Face it?
A novel that is written in such a way that it can really play with your minds & make you feel exactly the same as what our protagonist feels. Readers will connect to the storyline in such a way that, even if you finish the book, the story Miris & Roy will stay with you.. A nail biting medium paced story that has a blend of suspense and romance. You will feel the sufferings of all characters in one or the other way yet, You will also witness the never giving up strength. There were moments when I found it hard to read since I would feel the pain and at the same time badly wanted to come out just like Miris. Roy! Just like Miris, his character is going to stay with me for longer. Totally loved this Book.
Written in first person POV, ‘Linger: When You Are Gone’ can be best categorized as an amalgamation of Thriller, Emotional and Suspenseful storyline.
Right from the first chapter, this book had an aura of mystery surrounding it. Not often have I came across a story that weaved both the romantic and psychological aspects so beautifully.
Coming to the story, we have our Main Protagonist, Miris, who suffers from a condition called Hyperosmia, which to layman means that the perceptor suffers from a heightened sense of smell. This increased ability to perceive odors usually occurs due to another condition, but may also happen on its own in some cases. She is suffering from a personal loss, and due to this, she is a state of somewhat depression. She does have a support system for her, but the question remains: Will her support system and her closed ones be able to pull Miris out of her funk? Or will she be another victim to her unusual gifts?
I do have to admit, that at the beginning of the book was a tad bit confusing for me. It did take some time for me to warm up to the book. However, once I reached up at around twenty percent mark, the story started making sense and then, I was very much engrossed throughout the book.
I haven't had the chance to read any books by this author previously, but I am in awe of the writing after reading this book. It was such a nicely crafted story, and in no terms were there any faults that were visible or the ones that I could point out from.
I will recommend this book to everyone who love having some thought provoking story in their books. For this reason, I am going to give this book FIVE LINGER STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

|| PERSONAL INSIGHT || - 🌸 Although, I Enjoyed Reading the Book, The Story is An Emotionally Overwhelming. If Someone Likes to Read Light Stories For Leisure Purpose, Then The Book is Not a Good Pick For Him/Her.
I have never read such a story. It was confusing, thrilling and mind-blowing at the same time. Miris the protagonist is such a strong and weak character. While you think that the protagonist is a miserable lady who is haunted by voices. But then she would give you goosebumps and you would want to flee from her mind as soon as possible.
Omg, such a roller coaster story. I was thinking about why I choose this book it has so many flaws as the story has transitioned between present and past. And the characters are not well developed is it at a slow pace and so on.....
But then again, the midsection of the story went at whopping speed, it drained my energy. I don't know how to feel about the protagonist right now....
Things I love about story. Never giving up the attitude of the protagonist. An abusive relationship doesn't mean you would end up an alcoholic or turn into a bad person. Psychological issues can be solved when you look at the brighter side. Narrative was so lucid with all small poems at the start of every new chapter, it will engross you even deeper. Title of content, cover page and title of book will attract you even more. Rate: 4.5 In the end, this book will make you admire research author has done. And how story has ended "Ending can be beginning of something new".
There are few books where you lose interest in the first 10 pages and there are certain books that pique your interest even after you have crossed the halfway mark. Linger when you are gone….is one those rare novels where you are left flummoxed after each twist and turn of the plot as the narrative unfolds. The heart and core of the story is the delicate and feisty Miris, whose heightened sense of smell dictates most of her life’s predicaments. At times it rescues her of possible dangers (like spidey sense) and more than once causes her severe disorientation. Does one live with such a condition or find a way to resolve it? The story revolves around this dilemma when the two men in her life -Roy and Sam play a substantial role to make one choice or the other. Roy is the past and Sam is the present. This is both a love triangle and not-at-all a love triangle at the same time. You will know once the closing chapters of the novel reveals. The prose is written in such a fashion, where you wonder if it's a memory, a re-telling of the past or the ongoing present. The story moves back and forth in the initial chapters which might take one off-guard at first. But that’s the catch-`memories are random and it comes washing by without any notice, without any order. They begin without a starting point and conclude without an end. This way the story feels more authentic and on the face. No doubt this a psychological thriller which has been called out in the book’s blurb. But it is not until the climax that you realise how meticulously the elements are infused across the narrative. Everything has a reason to happen and one just needs to pay close attention to it. Overall, I really loved the plot and the style of narration. And of course the central character-Miris. She is not the stereotype damsel in distress. She packs her own punch when the need arises. As I closed the book, for me, it felt like I read a superhero story with a lot of incredible adventures coming our way to be told. In essence, the story lingered on even when it was over.
Okay so let's talk about the thing I liked the most about this book and that was the feeling of mystery and thrill right from the first chapter. when the book starts you could feel there was something different except the words there was a parallel feeling of mystery and thrill along with the words.
Also the way author describe situation and things was so refreshing. It was neither very over-the-top nor very less descriptive just the perfect amount we need for thrillers and mystery.
It is a psychological thriller but I like the the fact that other also included romance in it just to not only make it a one genre and it really helped me for my pace and my reading.
Last thing I would like to say is the title is perfectly accurate for this book because it is going to "linger" in your mind after you finish it for a while.
"We are all humans, and our senses are quicker to prompt us than our reason. Every man gives off a scent and that scent tells you how to act before your head does." - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
The book starts with these attention grabbing lines. The book has the perfect cover and title which matches with the content. I'm new to the thriller genre and after reading this I can say that it is really well written. The story revolves around our protagonist Miris and the strange incidents she experiences. Author has tries hard to keep the plot realistic and author has also researched well. The language of the book is not that simple but it is very creative and well descriptive. Naration is remarkable, I almost felt that as if I was watching a movie. The story took many twists and turns but still due to amazing characterization and naration I didn't loose the pace. This is a romantic thriller but it contains more thrill than romance. All in all I was not disappointed in investing time on this one, as the story proceeded my emotions were changing vividly with the twists in the plot. I would recommend it to all the thriller and mystery lovers. If you wanna drain yourself in the rivers of rainbow emotions like joy, sadness, fear, excitement, etc then go for buying a copy for yourself.
An interesting and novel take on the psychological suspense thriller, featuring a protagonist who has hyperosmia (a heightened sense of smell) and, while battling her own massive issues, is able to use this to assist the police in finding a murderer.
I found the book a little difficult to get into at first, and Miris rather irritating; but as the extent of what was going on with her became clear, little by little, her manner made total sense. I found myself finishing it in the early hours of the morning (and a book has to be good for me to do that) and having that satisfying feeling of having worked out something of what was going on. Recommended.
Psychological thrillers are my favourite and a difficult kind of genre to inked down. Linger when you're gone by Chitra Padmana is one such thrilling story about protagonist Miris who is in the process of overcoming loss of her best friend Soham. At the same time Miris has a strong sense of Smell that's what is her special ability. Things take more bitter turn when she gets stuck between hallucinations and reality. The arrival of her dead boyfriend Roy again in her life suddenly again changes alot for her.
Overall in midst of all these events the twist and turns throughout kept me engaged. Also the cover and title are very thoughtful and accurate for the story. The narration takes you along on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and events making it more interesting.
What I liked about the book-
~ A very well suitable cover and title. ~ The narration of all the twists and turns makes it a very engaging book. ~ The plot of the story is very unique and so it the narration. ~ It's a fast paced book so I could finish in one seating.
I'll recommend this book to those who are into psychological thrillers.
“As though we were drowning inside our hearts, as though we lived falling out of the skin into the soul.”
Linger when you're gone is an emotional story. It is a blend of psychological thriller , romance and suspense . Miris had hyperosmia, meaning her sense of smell is much higher than normal people. She even helped in solving cases at school with her gift. When a close person to her dies and the death is considered suicide, Miris again uses her high sense of smell to solve the case cause she know that no way can it be suicide. But she would never have thought where this would lead. I don't want to disclose more as any information beside this would be major spoiler. And trust me, you would want to go unspoiled in this one.
Chapter Names ! Maybe they were quotes taken from poems because author mentions those poems at the end of book. Well, I really, really liked that unique style of chapter naming . It surely bought an intrigue to the book. Also, narration was beautiful. I was on edge impatiently waiting for what will happen next. It was a story of love, betrayal, pain with an underlying chill to it. It was nostalgic, though I was biting my nails most of the time. (Caution : don't read at night) There were good moments too but mostly the plot had a dark cloud over it with murder and mystery going on.
As for characters, Miris was my favourite . She had her nightmares along with her vulnerabilities but still emerged strong. "But I wasn't just Miris, of the smell. I was Miris, of the strength." Apart from her, I liked Haseem and Veenu, I felt the pain that these three friends suffered.
It got a bit confusing at start to understand what was going on because of constantly changing timelines. I liked the book but it didn't 'wow' me throughout all the pages. There were times it got empty. Though, that end was spectacular . Never thought that coming! What a unique scientific twist to this paranormal story .
If you like books with despair and fear, pick this one up!
“Perhaps if Death is kind, and there can be returning, We will come back to earth some fragrant night”
Have you ever come across psychological thriller books that smell thrilling and spooking? You must be wondering, how could I smell a story. Well, you will understand it after reading the novel Linger, When You're Gone by Chitra Padmana. And mind you, the smell of the story and its characters still linger on my mind while I pen my thoughts about the same.
Straight away from the first word of the novel, you would plunge into a sinister atmosphere. A dreaded feeling would engulf you, reciprocating the feeling of fear felt by the character who would die soon. I had to stop reading for a while to let the feeling of dread go away. Such is the power of words built by the author.
Linger, When You're Gone narrates the story of Miris and her dead boyfriend, whose smell and memories haunt her. The death of her best friend Veenu forced her to come out of her depressive world and plays a vital role in unraveling the mystery behind her death.
The story has so many fragrances of emotions. The bonding of Miris with her friends smelled like freshly baked bread. Care and love which Miris received from her adoptive family smelled like a bunch of bloomed Lavender flowers. Then there was the smell of fear which was predominant with frequent occurrence throughout the story.
The entire story was cleverly crafted around the heightened smelling ability of Miris. It added the much-required freshness to the storyline and alertness to know how things will take a turn. Also, the way the author created eeriness and something sinister-to-happen kind of atmosphere was superb to read. The confusing beginning resembled the chaotic mental condition of Miris. But the narrative settles down as she finds a purpose. The book continues to be complex but interesting.
Linger, When You're Gone was a thrilling and chilling read, both at once. It was like a fresh smell of earth after the rain mixed with some weird, ominous smell of fear. You should read it if you like psychological thriller books.
This is a great blend of suspense and thriller genres. The book is focused on our protagonist, Miris. Her keen sense of smell has always been a blessing and a bane. She had kept herself in seclusion for years to escape from the dark past. But when her best friend dies mysteriously, she finds her world crashing down. Her darkness start to pull her into it. And one fine day, she finds him. Roy, the one whom she loved but was dead. Was he actually alive or was it some trick? Haunted by this fact Miris is in a confused state between her reality and imagination. But luckily, she has got friends, her neighbours namely Sam and Saira. Will they be able to help her get out of this mess? The narration is good. The language used is lucid. The words selection is easy and simple making it a good read for all.

Title: Linger Series: Possible Author: Chitra Padmana Genre: Thriller No. of Pages: 159
What is the book about? A protagonist with an acute sense of smell which causes her much trouble in life. And an overpossessive stalker of a boyfriend. From the past. The inciting incident is the death of a close friend. And how things spiral out of control.
What did I like about the book? THRILLER!!! All boxes ticked. No more spoilers. Just read and be hooked. To the end. The verses that introduce each chapter culled from literature I've studied makes it special.
What I didn't like about the book? The initial chapters took me some time to focus but it was smooth sailing after that.
This is the first book I read from this author and let me tell you that I loved it! Such a good book with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. The ending of this book.. come on! I just didn´t expect it! Can´t wait to read other books from this great writer! Amazing job! a must-read! A fantastic book that has it all! I happily endorse this story to any and all who are looking for a fiction enjoyable read and a completely different experience than anyone could imagine on their own. ¡Great book!
This book is the psychological thriller genre and after reading this I can say that it is really well written. The story revolves around the protagonist and the strange incidents which she experiences. Author has tries hard to keep the plot realistic with wonderful tricks. It's completely blend of thrilling and romance. Also, it shows a great involvement of smelling sense thru the main character of the story who is saira, the most adorable one. Narration of the story is simple and good and it's completely for who is suspence thriller. I'm so gladly expecting the next book from the author.
Miris, suffers from a condition called Hyperosmia, she have keen sense of smell. She is mentally vulnerable as she lost her bestfriend and boyfriend who were her support system. She is in confusion that whether she is seeing the dead people or is it all hallucinations. She is very much affected that she eats almost nothing and can't sleep properly. In such time, she meets Sam and Saira who are her neighbours. Can they help her? Can Miris come out of her present condition?
Linger, When You're Gone is a romantic psychological thriller. The story is developed just like present time and what happened 5 years before. At the beginning of the book, there were some confusions about what is happening but as the plot progress it becomes more engaging. It is difficult to believe this is a debut novel. Hallucinations of Miris could develop a bit of horror effect also.
Language is very simple and lucid. The cover is very apt to the book. The uniqueness of the book is the title of each chapter. Each chapter in the book are the lines from different poems and songs. They were choosen with atmost care that it have relation with the chapter. Overall every emotional engaging thriller book.
A great psycological thriller that will make you shiver through your bones! It has love, insecurity, vulnerability and heart break with a matured sense of self actualization. The protagonist never gives up, however badly she is stuck in life! I kind of reminisced the reading of the silence of lambs again while going through this story.. the coldness in horror and the indifference towards taking a life in cold blood, it would make you feel scared and rejuvenated at the same time...
What a book! It hooked me from the word go...! With a strong story and strongly etched characters Chitra has aced it in this debut novel of hers. The book is un-put -downable and the romance, the suspense, the thrill, the fear, are just right to make this psychological thriller a winner all the way! Well done Chitra.
This took me some time to read but this book was amazing. The writing style was amazing, and it was easy to understand and follow. It kept the book interesting and did not make me want to stop. Miris is such an interesting character, and has the talent of having a very good sense of smell! Something that is seen as a keen gift. How she has been in seclusion and wants to keep this gift not known. It is also seen as a romance with a unique twist. Miris wants to know what happens to her best friend after what happened. I will not say a lot because I do not want to spoil anything. This is well recommended!
Psychological thrillers are something that needs to be penned down by people who can really bring in the essence of thril into the plotline, and not everyone can successfully bring in a good psychological thriller.
This is an Amazing Psychological thriller with every aspect of thrill and suspense in it. This is a female Centered book with amazing characters in it. The story has got some unexpected twists and it's beautifully brought up.
The character's are nicely brought up. Overall a good read.
Chillingly plays on within the recesses of your brain.
From the very first chapter, this book got me glued into it's addictive narration style and story. Couldn't keep it down for a while. I would recommend this to all those who would love a thrilling read. The title seems apt, for its going to linger when you're done reading it..
Amazing! This is literary a masterpiece I really enjoyed the story, characters and the pace. I loved how folks paths intersected to reveal unexpected outcomes. There was just enough build up and suspense to keep me anxiously waiting to see what happened next.would love to read again.
I have been excited about this debut for some time, and for good reason as it is such an intensely powerful and emotional read. This is a book that deserves your time, don’t rush, even though it is so good it calls for you to race through.
