Montana Smith was one of my favorite child characters in this series. She was always so vocal and inquisitive to the point you had to laugh. Now she’s off to college with her best friend Xena. The girls had all these plans until love entered the chat. In walks Michael “Gibby” Gibson with all the charming qualities Tana loved. They became college sweethearts until Gibby showed who he truly was. I hate Tana had to go through all this. This is a DV awareness book and a tearjerker. There is a happy ending, but you will need tissues. This did not end the way I expected. Also I wish I saw more of Tana and Brandon’s relationship building.
I loved Xena and Mont together. Childhood friends. Best friends brother. Mont and Xena loved eachother before they truly knew what love was. Mont been shooting his shot, but Xena kept that stiff arm strong lol. I was glad when she finally gave him a chance cuz he stood on business about her.
Overall I have been enjoying this series. 4.5 ⭐️

Girl
Now how you go end this book like that. You know better. Poor Montana, she went through a lot. Hubby was just the walking devil. Love me some Brandon. That Mont and Xena are my fave.

Good Read
The story was great and I’m in love with the fact that Montana survived all she went through with her people never leaving her side.

This book was deep the kind of deep that sits in your chest long after you finish the last page.
One of the biggest misconceptions people have about domestic violence is thinking it only happens to women from broken homes. This story makes it painfully clear that anyone with a heart, love and hope can be vulnerable. Tana didn’t lack love, support or family she lacked the warning signs that Gibby hid so well.
Gibby didn’t start out as a monster. He isolated her slowly, chipped away at her confidence and got inside her head before anyone realized what was happening. That’s what made this so hard to read, watching the manipulation unfold in real time and knowing how realistic it was. By the time the mask slipped, the damage had already been done.
What broke me even more was the rebuild. She felt embarrassed and felt like she let her family down 💔Tana didn’t heal alone. Her family and friends surrounded her, held her up and helped piece her back together. That part mattered. Healing rarely happens in isolation and this book honored that truth.
The dynamic between Xena and Mont felt incredibly real. Xena was right her loyalty was to both of them. She couldn’t betray Tana’s trust just to ease Mont’s conscience, even though it put her in an impossible position. Secrets like that are heavy and the way it was handled felt authentic. It wasn't easy for her but she did what she had to do. I’m glad Mont checked his behavior because he was on the verge of losing something real.
Gibby yes, he needed help. He was conditioned to view women as property something to control, break and dominate. That cycle needed to be broken. Tana giving him grace showed her strength but her choosing distance showed her growth. Grace does not mean access and he never deserved a place back in her life. I don't know why he felt comfortable rolling up on her!!
This book was absolutely heartbreaking. It hurt to read but it needed to be told. Domestic violence is never love. It is control. It is fear. It is manipulation. This story did not romanticize it, it exposed it.
I cried. My heart felt heavy. However, I’m grateful for stories like this because they remind us why awareness, community and choosing ourselves matter so much. If your heart feels sore right now, that’s because you felt everything and that means the story did its job. Take a breath. Drink some water. Be soft with yourself today 🤎

Hard Lessons
This was a bit of a tough read. While I understood that there would be triggers, I still don't think I was quite prepared for this.
Montana 'Tana' Smith, daughter to Trell and Tae Smith, seemed like such a sweetheart, with a bit of an edge to her. She was definitely Taes' daughter with that sharp tongue, yet just as pure hearted as can be. I love that she not only made sure her best friend, Xena, had what she had, but that her family was there to support and uplift Xenas' family when her mother died at war. Trell is one cool dude and I really like that he ensured Xenas' father had the means he needed to take care of his daughters. Although Tana was of pure heart, she was naive to a horrible fault. I was hoping she'd leave Micheal 'Gibby' Gibson alone once he started with the minor nit-picking, yet she stayed with him way past due and it cost her way more than she could've imagined.
Gibby was such a punk and I was looking forward to Mont, Montana's older brother and the oldest son of Trell and Tae, to give him the business, yet Tana and her good heart wouldn't let him. Mont made sure Gibby suffered and I was hoping he'd do more. I mean, did Gibby really need all his digits and limbs😏. Either way, I loved the way Mont held true to his big brother status no matter how old they got. An everlasting bond was there between he and Tana and I adored it.
I was happy that Brandon was there for Tana, even in her brokenness. He didn't try to push a relationship on her, given all she'd been through, yet he let her dad know, once she's healed I'm coming for her; Trell couldn't do anything but respect it.
Xena and Mont were a great look and I'm glad we got the update from them at the end. I hope we see more of them in books to come.
As usual, seeing the bond of the Washington-Christianson-Smith Tribe is always so nice. When you mess with one, you mess with all.
Although it was triggering at times, the overall Love from this story was so strong and heartwarming. Really good read.

Hmmmm 🤔, “Heart of Tana: Bent But Not Broken” was a good read until it wasn't. In spite of the trigger warnings ⚠️ this book’s content was difficult to read. …and I understand, as parents & guardians we (I) want to insulate my child/nieces/nephews/godchildren/grans from potential dangers & predictors, but where were these preventative measures for Tana (and siblings)? More so, I’m confounded if not astounded that no body in the Christianson/Washington/Smith expansive network of colleagues & arsenal of hood associates asked, or performed a cursory inquiry of Michael, his father (never named) & or his family. Maybe I’m dating myself (again 🤦🏾♀️🤭), but when a guy expressed interested in a date & or even taking you to the prom, he was interrogated/Spanish Inquisition (harrassed 🤷🏾♀️ oh, well! My grandma would say, “it builds character”🤭❗) by your father, grandfather, brothers, uncles and or family members etc.! Nevertheless, multiple people needed to confirm/report affirmative. Also, the recurring questions, “who’s your people?” “where are you from?”. Smith’s/Washington’s/Christianson’s ya’ll dropped the ball❗…SAVAGERY CHECK⁉️

Heart of Tana
Mel!!!! Hunny I was terrified to dive into this book! I even paused this book before I finished but once I did it flowed beautifully even in the darkest parts! Tana had the strength all along why she didn’t use it from beginning to end, puppy love probably but the fact that she was able to fight the fight is amazing! I was her at one time so I totally get it! Xena was an amazing best friend & idc she showed a loyalty to HER SISTER cause we all know if she would’ve betrayed her Tana would have shit her out then she wouldn’t have ever left! Mont has always been the protector & his love for his sis & Xena was evident he is Trell’s son! Brandon healed my girl & the patience he gave was highly commendable! He & Glori! Now to the Gibby dude: he deserved everything he got plus some. He was a narcissist, manipulator, a little confused boy. I had a feeling his dad messed him up cause wtf?!?! I would still recommend this to anyone who can handle the triggers!

Washington/Christianson/Smith Saga continued with the next generation as we followed Trell and Tae Smith's daughter Montana and son Mont to college.
Montana journey deals with domestic violence as young sis seem to have a nack for picking the wrong guys.
Grab your tissues 🤧 and glass of wine🍷 and get ready for Mel Dau to take you through it!
Genre: Urban Romance
Troupe: 🎭
Spice Level:🌶️🔥
Possible Triggers: ⚠️Domestic violence, physical abuse, child loss
Tissues: 😭😭😭
I said what I said and as always: don't take my word for it. Read the book, form your own opinions, and support your authors! 🫶🏿📖👏🏾
,......................................................📓
The Washington/Christianson/Smith reading list is as follows:
Khiaere & Phy 1 & 2
Justice Rose
Trell and Tae
Heart of Tana
The Wrap Up
The Christmas Guest
Come into The Out Now
A Beautiful Mess
Whewwww! That's alot! If you go by the Amazon rec, they will have you read "Summers Howl" and "Willows Peak" after "Trell & Tae" because of the characters Claire and her sister Rae.
However, those are optional as they do not deal with the families or take place in North Carolina
It's an often dark and emotional ride. So, Buckle up, Buttercup 😉

Beautiful Read
I loved this book!!!…The children are adults and learning to maneuver through this thing called life!!!…
There were moments in this book that my heart broke for Montana!!!…She had such a big heart with her momma’s mouth!!!…😂😂😂
I knew Trell, Tae and the rest of the crew was not about to play about Montana!!!…
There is definitely something to be said about a man that misguide his son on his ignorant ways, because it doesn’t always work the same for them!!!…Gibby needed help, but with his misguided info from his dad, he hurt someone deeply and lost a lot as the result!!!…
Mont did not play about his sister and I loved how he was with Xena!!!…
I was so happy that Brandon was patient with Montana and loved her to her HEA!!!…

So very good!
When I finished this story I let it sit for a moment so that I could think about exactly what it is that needed to be said about how good this story was from beginning to end. The writer gives us a subjects that are often over looked and up until recently light has been shinned on them. This story is written with an intensity that brings you in doesn't let up. There are moments that are so real, you have to say to yourself "say it sista". Also there are levels of maturity that some are not going to see,but if you are a believer than you know prayer changes things. Take a journey with Montana and the gang and grow up in the process.

Great Read
Montana went through a lot in this book! Having a solid family and great friends means everything when you're going through difficult relationships or situations. Gibby was a coward, but it was obvious he needed help. Making him suffer was the best thing Mont could have done. Xena and Mont's relationship was amazing. To have loved someone for such a long time is priceless. Brandon was a sweetheart to be there for Tana while she healed and then become her husband later. Amazing job, Mel!

A survivor and a conqueror
In this story, Tana echoed Destiny Child's song "Survivor" because that's exactly what she is. A survivor and conqueror. She made it through everything Gibby did to her, but with God and her hefty and loving support system, she conquered her circumstances. Now Tana is a happy and thriving woman that's living her best life surrounded by her amazing family.

Bent not Broken
This one here. Had me and my emotions all over the place. Being in a similar situation many years ago made my heart speed up a bit. This story was so relatable and I hope that anyone reading this book, if you are in this situation, although you may be in denial, take a moment to take a deep breath and know that you are not alone. I loved the title Bent not Broken.

Love Shouldn't Ever Hurt!
Mel Dau, this one right here is a lesson in a half. I really love how you show all sides of an issue good or bad. It just shows how people are taught how to behave. Until you know better you won't do better. It also shows it doesn't matter how much you are loved if you don't love yourself you will allow all kinds of situations to take place.
The love that this crew has for one another is wonderful🤗🤗🤗🤗

Heart of Tana
Oooohhh I so hated that Montana went through this mess of a relationship with Gibby and broke her spirits but happy to see and know her circle of love and strength from her family pulled her through her misery. Mont and Xena were just meant to be and cute when Xena gave Mont her love. Brandon was what Montana needed after Gibby and he loved her right and healed her in more ways than one.

Whew!
Enjoyed catching up with Tana and Mont's stories. Tana's and Gibby's situation was tragic. Reading about abuse may be sensitive and triggering for some, but enlightening for others. However, I was engrossed in their story and that ending has me excited to read what happens next....

Not easily broken
The way that man tried to break Tana was heartbreaking because she came from a family that had her back that would go to hell and back for her, and he broke her so bad that she believes she had no one. The light of the story was Xenia and mont’s love every time the book took you to a dark place Xenia and Mont brought you back out.

wow!!
That’s was deep but Mel Dau did an outstanding job writing this story!
It was exciting catching up with Tana and Mont as they become adults and figure out this thing called life. Watching them find love, chose careers, go to school, be hurt and heal from the trauma that come with being hurt.
If you love a good romance with lots of drama then this is the book for you!

Painfully beautiful
This story pulls at your heart strings. No matter how confident and how much a person has you never know what they are going through. I must say I was expecting a different ending. Gibby I wanted so much worse for him.

OMG
The things Montaña went through was so hard. There were several times I found myself wanting to by pass certain parts just to not live that part. The ending left me wondering about Montana’s reaction.

Awesome
This is another awesome story line from Mel Dau. I love all of the characters in this family lineage. Montana is a strong and compassionate woman; because the average woman would have agreed with her family to kill Gibby!

This book took me through it! So glad Montana got her happy ending but she had me hot with her for a good minute lol. I loved the pop up from Glori and Brandon! On to the next book in the catalog!

I loved this story. Tana experienced something that many women suffer through everyday. This was beautifully written. I enjoyed reading about the kids from Khiaere n Phy. I love this family. Mel Dau I am HOOKED. Pen game is FIRE💜💜💜💜💜

Tears
Wow, over the years, you can tell that the men have matured. Tana had a big heart, and just needed love. I am so happy that Brandon was there to make her love again. Gibby got off too easy, he needed to be under the jail. I guess Tana big heart saved him.

I loved...loved...loved Montana and Brandon story. I loved how despite what Montana went through with the love and support of family she overcame. I loved that Brandon was there for her. I loved to catch up with the Washington, Smith and Christianson family.
