Full of inconsistencies

Outside of the fact that the MC is a psychopath and a hypocrite that keeps breaking his own “rules”, he is also the most incompetent assassin ever. We’re led to believe that this is a trained, professional assassin yet his kills involve more collateral damage than Terminator. Most of his clever assassination plans are “I’ll sneak in at the time when the target is most heavily guarded and wide awake” and also he doesn’t give a crap how many bystanders see his face or know his name during his “assassinations” .

The litrpg aspect is also a joke. Points, levelling, stats, skills mean nothing at all in this world. He might as well be wearing a step counter.

Three stars for the writing and decent action scenes, but the characters are just terrible.

This gamelit story had a fun premise. Assassin in 19th Century London gets offered a second chance at life in a new world by a shifty God. The new world has a magic system that works like your average fantasy RPG.

Unfortunately the premise was more fun than the actual story. The writing was fine and I’ve read duller stories but the whole book was built around a single significant main character and despite being a very atypical LitRPG protagonist the guy still ended up being a bit of an unlikable bore. It was hard to root for him which made it tough to engage with the happenings.

Rating: 3 stars. I’ll give this three stars as it was pretty readable but the longer it went the less interested I was in the story so I’ll probably not continue with the rest of the series.

Audio Note: Daniel Wisniewski did a decent job with the audio.

It’s ok

The storytelling is good and makes up for building a world of magic and other races to barely utilize any of it. I had to skim to the last few chapters when I realized I didn’t care about the characters and direction of the story.

I thought there’d be some kind of adventure involved, but no, he’s just coldly murdering people one after another. Even he seems bored.

So so

The background story and world was a good setup. The isekai part was the best I've ever read. However, nothing was there to make me like the MC. He killed because he liked the challenge. His code was of ethics was questionable. Ok to kill a former soldier turned good guard, but not ok to kill a snitch... Finally, quit calling yourself an assassin if you never assassinate. He is more of a duelist. Straight up fighter. No stealth killing ever.

This is my first book from the author, and I had a lot of fun reading it.

The book starts in 1800s London, where our MC is an assassin trying to pull off a tough job. As others have noted, the character isn't as much an assassin (he does some assassin-y things, but he kills just as much while fighting) He finishes the job, only to be met by a god from another world that's similar to Earth but also has things like magic and an RPG system.

I will say that the fish out of water aspect is handled well. The issues aren't resolved in a few paragraphs but continue throughout the book, where he struggles to understand the system, magic, how the city he finds himself in operates, and other things.

He's also struggling with the past and the trust issues he has with other women. I don't think this will turn into a harem book, but there is definitely a relationship/apprenticeship element to the book.

For me, the story is solid. Instead of taking over the cities criminal element with a few key deaths and by showing a scary mask (I'm thinking of Monster Mercy here), this is a long term project that will take him.

If you're adamant that you can't read anything that isn't pure stealth and assassinations, this book probably isn't for you.

Then again, I'm not rating it on that basis. I had fun, spent a couple hours in a different world with somewhat unique characters, and enjoyed myself.

That deserves a 5/5* rating in my book.

Recommended.

Elias McKinley is a highly trained assassin---but that's not enough to save him when his employer decides he's a loose end. Only the circumstances force him to accept a god's offer of a new life in another world. Now he's got a fresh start and a new target, but the rules aren't exactly the same as they used to be . . .

This was a pretty good read, although I felt like the litRPG aspects were largely useless. Maybe next volume the stats and skills can mean more, since a good chunk of this volume is Elias figuring out what this stuff even means. The twist here is that despite being from Earth, he's also from a much earlier time, well before videogames existed, so he has zero familiarity with any kind of game mechanics.

I think this does the story a lot of favors when it comes to planting Elias in his new home. He's familiar with the more traditional tools of assassination---daggers, swords, poisons---that fit well with the fantasy world he's found himself in. And despite being a professional back on Earth, his ignorance of skills, magic, and all the little ways this new world differ leave him a lot of room to grow.

The action scenes are plentiful and engaging. And there's more than a few underlying mysteries. Why does this world's god feel the need to hire a hitman? I have some thoughts after seeing what went on in this city, but there's no real confirmation yet. As this story is mostly focused on a single city, we slowly get details about what's really going on here, and there are pointers to a much larger conspiracy afoot.

Elias is also an interesting character. He's not forthcoming about his own past, to a large extent. He has a certain code of morals, where he mostly won't kill if he doesn't have to, but he's also willing to expand his secondary target list in order to accomplish his main objective.

Overall, I found this a lot more solid than a traditional isekai story (and a definite cut above the Japanese assassin-in-another-world light novels I've sampled). I rate this book Recommended.

I enjoyed this read, but there are a few issues with it.

The biggest might be that the MC gets isekai'd to a world of skills and stats, but they're playing catch-up and don't seem to have any impact on the MC. It's like he entered the world with max level skills and the system is playing catch-up everytime he does something. Which.. is a different kind of OP?

I liked that the MC wasn't from modern day earth, but rather the flintlock era, which meant the MC had no experience with things like interface, stats, or skills. He rolled with it quickly enough tho, but it meant the story wasn't centered around min/maxing or gaming the system and more the MC just doing what he'd do regardless.

My biggest annoyance however, was when the author seemed to forget what they had previously written. There was one incident where the MC was listening in on an conversation, and overheard that the count had hired an specialist to come and find and kill said MC. But then later, when said assassin shows up to kill the MC. It's like the MC never overheard that they'd ordered a specialist. And pondered who'd send it, assumed it was probably the duke but wanted to see if he could find evidence of such a thing.

Also, for being a master assassin, while he kicks ass and takes names. He does a lot of... questionable things. Like not assassinating the duke when he has the opportunity to do so, and instead does it when it is the hardest. I believe the MC wants the challenge, and is purposely sabotaging himself but it isn't really written that way. For reasons, his logic was he couldn't just kill the duke because then he'd need to flee the city. So he wanted to destabilize the guard first. (but if he just killed the duke, how would they know it was him who did it?)

A stranger in a strange land

Elias is a great guy. Much like Eric Flint's Philosophical Strangler, heist an assassin with a code of honor. This first volume of his adventures is a fun read, whisked away from his home planet Earth he is sent to a different world. He has been tasked by the being who sent him to undertake an unspecified number of assassinations, the targets of which are only revealed in their own due time. Join Elias as he learns about status magic, what it means to level, finding equipment and funds. Oh and his first target? The ruler of the city he is in, why start small? I recommend the book if you enjoy Isekai and/or gamelit. It is a great start and I am really looking forward to book 2 of the series.

Surprisingly smart

At some point you come to expect a certain type of a hero in these kinds of stories. Mainly a somewhat clever, mostly rush childish hero with a ton of luck. In this one the hero is a smart, well experienced and thoughtful guy.

Theworld building is a bit incomplete, but it's ok because the story happens in one city at the moment, I hope it will be clearer as things go along.

As for the story itself, nothing to write home about, but still well done.

The only thing that bothers me in this book is the fact that the author uses the word "anathema" so casually and it makes me feel he doesn't really know the meaning and uses it just because it’s a "big smart word" to use.

4/5 recomanded

This is an isekai (teleported to another world). An entity saves an assassin, the main character, from eminent death and sends him to another world, without any clear purpose. So much so, that the main character works to become the undisputed capo, overlord, organized crime head of this other world. The author nonsensically-irrationally gives this main character, Elias, a double standard, changing ethical/moral compass. Everything that the main character does is good, everything everybody else does is bad. Can the author be any more delusional than that??
If you like organized crime stories, where the protagonists steal drug shipments and then try to create drug trafficking networks, etc. well, this story might be for you.
There is nothing good in this story. I do not recommend it.

Let me start by saying that good books about assassins are hard to find- likely because they're hard to find. I'm pretty skeptical about books with assassins as large characters, but I like to at least like to read them in case there's something that changes my mind.
This didn't even need three pages.
Right from the start you're hooked, and it's amazing- it's fast paced, but not rushed, and the worldbuilding is amazing. I finished all three books in the series to come back and give a review on this one, as it has my vote for favorite.
I would advise caution for younger audiences reading the series, but it's nothing too bad. All books in the series are great, so give it a read!

The author was trying to do something different and failed. The main character doesn't have to be "good" to be likeable and I've read some books where the mc is the villain and somehow I root for them until the end but not this guy. If I can't relate to the MC, the story failed to me. Dexter is a serial killer who convinces himself that he's killing for the greater good and yet I rooted for him not to get caught. The author could not create that magic to keep me reading, I had to force myself. I honestly don't get the positive reviews. I'm disappointed and reviews mislead me. I won't recommend this to anyone.

WTFlyingF.. the MC Rules "I never hurt good people!" first thing you do in a new world go find a criminal' to work for, how send you to murder a good person how is investigating him. This Dud (MC) intelect is in the negative realm, just kill the criminal and rob him! dont go kill the "Good" watchmen, because you need money! roob criminals! you are a super assassin? then rob rich people at night... anything else, god this shit is horrid! why the 2 stars? the author does a good job describing action and the fight are interesting.. but the plot is a HOLE! darker than black, imposible to fill.

2.5 stars. While at first it seemed like it could hold some promise, that was quickly shattered by one of the worst assassins I have ever read about. He is supposed to be a trained assassin with years of experience on top of which he is supposed to be intelligent. But how intelligent can you call an Assassin that shows everyone and their grandmother your face, loudly declares his name to everyone he meets. Oh and also calls other Assassins that are actually smart enough to hide their face cowards. I just barely managed to finish this book it was just so lame.

DNF at 89 %.

The protagonist is an isekai anti hero. Unfortuntely, unlike Logan Ninefingers, Dexter or Parker not in a good way. He is more a sociopath and clumsy unimaginative killer despite all the claims of the author.

The protagonist is truly amoral and thus unrelatable. Despite haven been given a new life and therefore the chance to act as he desires, he kills without any remorse a good honest man just to make money and later on strives to become the boss of the local underworld by controling drug sales, prostitution, thieves etc.

Good book overall; no complaints, but didn't clear the 5-star hurdle. No shame that, lots of good 4-star books to keep it company.

It does surpass the "dumbass MC" hurdle, a necessity to hit that 4th (let alone 5th) star. Elias is just on the pragmatic side of sociopathic, making him a sufficiently relatable character as far as I'm concerned. It'll be interesting to see his patron god's grand scheme for Elias' new world, so I look forward to the next book.

Depth of character

I originally thought that the assassin would be a standard brooding neutral evil or chaotic evil character. I was wrong. I think he aligns more closely with lawful neutral than anything. He does what needs to be done, but only within his rules. Excellent character progression and character building. The author did a great job showing the scenery and the personalities. I look forward to the next volume.

Killer Read

This book is great! Its a great Isakai story. An Assassin Goes back to a fantasy world as an Assassin. But wait learns theirs Magic. Lives by a code which makes you respect a cold blooded killer.
I know the Author says trying to keep his books under 100000 words so instead of more or less words please keep the story and character alive. By writing a ton of books truly loved book 1. Thank you.

There's very little LitRPG elements or even magic, to the point that the story could've been told without a single fantasy element and there'd likely be no noticeable difference. Still, there seemed to be more towards the end so hopefully there'll gradually be more unveiled. Also, the crime thriller plot was done quite well, so despite it being a bit different than I expected it was a really enjoyable read.

NO SPOILERS.

The description indicated it was fast paced. Well, that was accurate. An interesting story by author Grayson Sinclair, that was well written. Maybe the story could have been allowed to breathe a tad more, but that's just nitpicking on my part. Good action and enough breadcrumbs dropped to keep you glued to the next page. Story definitely falls under the Overpowered MC. Will comeback to the series, just hope it gets a little better as we go along.

Top notch litrpg

Isekai is part of the title and while technically true not quite what I expected.... not to the books detriment.
Interesting world and magic system. Magic doesn't seem super fleshed out in this first volume, but it is set up to show its potential (hopefully in the next installment).
Fun and a quick read. Well done fight scenes. Set up for plenty of growth.

Rhys’ pieces

I’m a fan of powerful MC thrust into noob’s body, whether by act of the gods or some other means. Good skill progression, but this is a slow leveler, don’t expect new levels and stat points like some LitRPG.

Enjoyed the story, and looking forward to Rhys returning to settle some scores.

Good book

Pretty decent first book for a series, but for gamelit\litrpg the leveling is painfully slow, at the end of the book the MC is still level 2 and his skills from his first life are still catching up with the system. Still I think the series has a lot of potential and I want to read more.

Great read

I loved the book beginning to end, i enjoyed seeing through the eyes of a character typically used as a stepping stone for the main character. The book has an easy to follow writing style whale going in depth with the story and world building. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

Refreshing

I'm a big isekai fan so I have seen most of the tropes before. I found it refreshing for a non-modern person to be sent somewhere with the video game-like mechanics when they have no idea what a video game is. Also a fan of the slow-burn romance. Too often does an MC have a harem before the end of the first book.

It was OK but.

The story is called Isekai assassin it but it sure doesn’t feel like Isekai to me. The display of exceptional skills versus the listing of extremely low skills and levels just felt counter detective to. There’s something missing in the story some element that just makes it an ordinary story and not truly Isekai.

There wasn't really much to this book. The character work, world-building and plot are all pretty shallow, and ultimately the whole book felt a little bland to me. It's not exactly a bad read, but ultimately it's pretty forgettable.

This gets 3 stars because really it's about 2.5 stars of quality but it did just enough to keep me reading to the end so it gets bumped up.

A bit short, but fun to read.

Nothing complex or surprising here, but still fast enough and fun enough to keep your attention. Could see a series out of this, but need to be careful of becoming stale and predictable.

Fun read!

A fun read. If you like an over powered MC this is the book for you. This is one of the better LitRPG books I have read. I recommend this book to all readers of the LitRPG genre.
