Three women scholars. Three lives changed. And a dash of romance.
Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden

1858, Dublin

Fred Fitzsimmons will soon graduate Trinity College. With only a few weeks, he must continue safeguarding the enormous secret he’s been keeping throughout his time in that he is actually Winnifred, a woman in disguise. The medical degree she is a breath away from claiming would allow her to save her beloved village. But having her secret revealed would land her in jail. So when Liam Rafferty, a fellow student with a reputation for unravelling even the most complicated of mysteries, grows suspicious of “Fred,” more lives than merely hers hang in the balance.

An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes

Nineteen-year-old Esther Sessions has survived the slums of Liverpool, and her abusive home, by holding onto a promise she made to her dying mother long ago--to keep reading. When a factory explosion frees her from her oppressive life and provides an opportunity to attend Bedford Women's College in London, Esther determines to succeed at school, knowing her education will ensure a future in which she might provide for herself and never be dependent upon any man. From the first moments of her arrival, Professor John Lind begins challenging her beliefs about everything from classical literature to algebra to--men. His kindness is something she has never encountered in a man before, and the generosity of his heart might just reach through the barriers surrounding Esther's.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen

Ellie Perkins has achieved her dream of establishing her own Kindergarten school to serve the needs of Liverpool's orphans. As a woman who has graduated from college and pursued a career, she has faced opposition and contention from all sides. Her first year is a success, however, and as she begins the second, she is caught by surprise when her newest hire marries and moves away, leaving a class of orphans without a teacher. Solicitor Graham Lucas, meanwhile, appears on her school doorstep, having narrowed a search for his employer's heir to one of the students in the now teacher-less class. Ellie sees a temporary fix to her problem that will benefit both her and the handsome solicitor. Graham will substitute the kindergarten class, while Ellie searches for a replacement. Unbeknownst to them all, however, is the lurking presence of a jealous relative who covets the young heir's position, and who will stop at nothing to take his place. Also at risk is Ellie's heart and hard-won career. Can she truly take a chance on a handsome substitute teacher bent on winning her love?

I feel like I say this a lot but, I'm going to say it again. This was great and I love these Timeless Collections! I can always count on them to be delightful, entertaining, pull me in, and be very satisfying in giving me everything I love in a book! The three books in this collection were no exception. I really enjoyed this theme of these, A Gentlewoman Scholar. Especially seeing how the authors created their heroines and their desire to learn, during a time when that was not looked upon as a good thing.

~A Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden ~ 5* ~
I loved this mistaken identity story. So much fun. Winnifred and Liam were a sweet couple. They have a bit of a conundrum that can make or break both of their schooling. And I loved seeing how they worked their way through it. Not to mention the sweet friendship that started growing into something more. Sarah M. Eden is an author I can always count on to deliver sweet stories full of heart!

Content: Clean.

~An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes ~ 5*~ Oh my heart!!! Wow!!! 😍 Can I just say that the chemistry was flying off the pages in this book. I absolutely loved Esther and John. But even more than that, I loved seeing Esther rise above the sorrow and trials of her life. I just adored her so much for it. I loved her benefactress and their relationship that showed Esther goodness and light. But Professor John Lind. Oh, he's the perfect hero for Esther. Not that she needs a man to rescue her, but as someone she can learn to trust in and show her that men are good and decent, not all terror inducing and demanding. Their conversations back and forth, their budding friendship and oh my heavens, the ending. Woohoo!!!! I loved it all! I think this one is my favorite of the three. Michele Paige Holmes is another author whom I can always count on to deliver stories that I become completely immersed in and feel all the emotions with!

Content: Clean. There is some death and some talk about Esther being beat as a child, but nothing graphic.

~Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen ~ 4.5*~
This was a sweet and delightful story. Ellie and Graham were so fun to read about. There are some struggles and sorrow that they face individually and together. But the story of the school Ellie is running was so much fun. I loved watching Graham step into the role Ellie gives him and adapts and thrives. So much fun! The children in the story were just darling. Add in some sweet romance the slowly grows between Ellie and Graham and you'll be happy with this story that you can enjoy in one sitting. Nancy Campbell Allen has delighted me with all of her books and I loved that she was a part of this collection. Yay!!!

Content: Clean. This one starts with a death at the beginning and a fire at the end. Sweet kisses and nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I listened to the audiobook the second time and loved the narrator. She was perfect, especially for the last story in the collection.

I love these collections!! I know I say that every time one of them comes out, but it's true. I get three stories--some by authors I love and some by authors that are new to me--all with the same theme, yet completely different from each other. This time it's about the educated "Bluestocking" ladies, the ones usually looked down upon by Society.

BLESSING IN DISGUISE by Sarah M. Eden--What a sweet story about Winnie and Liam who are both a few weeks away from final exams and graduation. Winnie has a secret and if it got out she'd not only let down her village, but she'd probably be sent to jail. Their journey to love is sweet and I love how Liam put aside his dream of working for a notable business in Dublin to be with Winnie. So sigh worthy. I love how the small village took care of Winnie and scraped together money to send her to school.

AN UNEXPECTED EDUCATION by Michele Paige Holmes--Esther grew up in a slum of Liverpool with an abusive father, and sickly mother, who secretly taught her to read telling her it would take her places. When she's the only one left in her family, she's taken in by her employer, Lady Parker, who sends her to a women's college in London. She develops feelings for her English professor Mr. John Lind, and he finds her intriguing, and a "daisy amongst a vase of roses". I loved how John showed Esther that he's not like the men she'd known up to that point in her life (her father, brother, landlord, factory owner). She can trust him with her feelings, he respects her and will be there when she needs it. I loved Lady Parker and how she showed so much kindness to Esther.

GOOD HEIR HUNTING by Nancy Campbell Allen--Graham Lucas is a solicitor and on an errand for Baron Francis, which takes him to a Kindergarten school run by Ellie Perkins. It's the start of a new school term and things are not going as she'd planned. Needing a teacher on short notice she asks Graham to help out which leads to some fun situations with the little ones. I loved how Graham finds out he has a talent for teaching four and five year olds. What a strong and determined woman Ellie had to be to start a kindergarten school for underprivileged at that time. The scenes with Graham and the children were fun and sweet, and I liked the romance that developed between Graham and Ellie.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories in this collection. The reader can choose to read one story at a time or the entire book, depending on how much time they have to read. These are all clean romances. I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions I've expressed in this review are my own.

These Victorian era romances had 3 novellas by 3 authors.

1) Sarah M. Eden (author)
Trinity College in Dublin was soon to graduate Liam as an
engineer & "Fred" as a physician. But Dr. Poole & one other
administrator at the college thought something odd about
Fred and asked Liam to investigate as a solver of puzzles.

Fred was actually Winnifred who took on the persona &
garb of "Fred." Win was an orphan whose village paid for
her medical tuition & then she'd serve her village. Liam,
a good guy, had a creative solution to the puzzle and
afterward too. I would have gladly read more about this
couple.

2) Michele Page Holmes (author)
A family in Liverpool. Esther had a sire who beat her &
Mum had a terrible demise. Sire forced Esther to work in
a factory which eventually burned, with her sire and bro
inside. Lady Parker became her employer and benefactor,
and paid for the h's women's college tuition. Professor
Lind, 11 yrs her senior, fell in love w/ her. I liked this one
too, but it ended too abruptly.

3) Nancy Campbell Allen (author)
Ellie, a beauty, served as a kindergarten headmistress
(of orphans) in Liverpool. A solicitor, Graham (easy on
the eyes -natch) sought from the h the 'natural' grand-
son (who attended her school) of a baron. How to ID this
5 yr old boy? Heartwarming story. I wished the baron
would have taken in grandson's bestie too.

I thoroughly enjoyed each of these stories! A "bluestocking" is one of my favorite types of characters, and the ones in this collection were delightfully quirky and strong. It fills me with gratitude to think of the women (and men) who were ground breakers and advocates for higher education for women and the sacrifices they made and the path they paved for future generations. I hope to never take them for granted! While study and education is a main theme, there is also a delightful dose of sweet romance with true gentlemen who are encouraging and supportive of their endeavors. My vote for best kiss goes to the last story, Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen- who utilized the romantic potential of a room full of books! ;)

It is truly fascinating to read about the life of women who went against the norm and pushed for an education when women were not allowed one. It is because of these brave females that we now as women have the many opportunities and freedoms we have today. These 3 stories have fictional characters, but portray the real struggles women and those men who cared for them went through to educate themselves and make their lives and the lives of those around them better. The stories in this book were very different and all very well written. I would recommend this book if you like historical fiction and clean romance.

Three charming romances. I liked the inclusion of persons from various walks of life being represented in these stories. "Blessing in Disguise" by Sarah M Eden has a rather unconvincing premise, but is one of the most successful recent novella's I have read at overcoming the insta-love feeling often generated by short story romances. "An Unexpected Education" by Michele Paige Holmes felt the most historically plausible of the three, but I regretted that Esther was left without the means to pursue her dream because of her overly cautious guardian. "Good Heir Hunting" by Nancy Campbell Allen has a less than believable ending, but it is cute and I was fascinated to learn of the early ideas about early childhood education.

In the anthology A Gentlewoman Scholar, Sarah Eden is up first. Blessing in Disguise is a gentle romance. Winnifred is doing something wrong for all the right reasons. She gets her HEA.

Next is An Unexpected Education by Michelle Paige Holmes. Although I liked Lady Parker, hers was a minor role. The ending was a bit hurried, the story itself was slow.

Finally there is Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen. Of the three stories this was my favorite. The story moved along well; at one point it brought me to tears. It seemed a little fast for a couple to decide to marry, at least they talked and got to know each other, However once again the HEA seemed rushed.

I'm used to reading novels set in the Regency era. I've read the other Timeless Victorian collections, but I still find myself intrigued by the progress of the era. This collection is about women as scholars, and was quite educational.
I liked how each story approached this topic from a different angle. In Blessing In Disguise by Sarah Eden Winnifred Fitzsimmons has been sent by her village to Trinity College as a medical student. The college doesn't award degrees to females, so she is "Fred" Fitzsimmons instead. In An Unexpected Education Esther Sessions is sent to a women's college by her benefactress, Lady Parker. Life has taught her that men can't be trusted, but one of her professors might teach her otherwise. In Good Heir Hunting, Mr. Graham Lucas is looking for the five year old heir to his employer, and ends up teaching kindergarten in order to observe and pick out the correct Steven Smith. I hadn't realized that the word kindergarten didn't refer to the age group, but a concept of educating the poor. See? Educational.

Content: clean (no language, a few kisses, mild violence)

This Victorian collection of women scholars was so fun to read! Each story was different yet had the theme of an educated woman. Blessing in Disguise by Eden was super fun with Fred/Winnie in disguise as a boy in order to become educated as a doctor. Her story pulled me in and I really felt for her unique situation. An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes was an emotional journey of hardship and abuse. I cried along with Esther, felt her pain and her joy all while she tried to find her footing. Holmes wrote a stunning and emotional story that is imprinted on my mind. Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen was an unexpected love story I didn't quite see coming. Graham was so sweet and such a good sport when he was thrown into unchartered waters. Ellie was so poised and graceful under any circumstance and I loved her fortitude. This collection was easy to read and perfect for shorter stories when I didn't have a ton of time to read! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Three amazing novellas by three fabulous authors! As the title suggests, each story is about a woman who is either seeking an education or is a teacher. I enjoyed all three stories and was a little sad when each one ended because I wanted to find out what was going to happen next. Each story is very well done.

A Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden is the story of a young woman sent to Dublin by her village to become a medical doctor when most of the young men in the village have died. She disguises herself as a young man and when another perceptive student is asked to find out her secret, she must decide how far she is willing to go to keep up the ruse. Loved this story and the creative way that Winnifred makes friends with Liam both as herself and “Fred.”

An Unexpected Education by Michelle Paige Holmes was my favorite story. In this story, Esther, a poor young woman is given the opportunity of a lifetime, to attend college. Taught to read by her mother and freed from her abusive father and brother, a wealthy benefactress offers her this chance to fulfill her wildest dreams. When she gets to college, she meets the handsome professor John Lind. Little by little he learns her story and admires her fortitude and intelligence. But, will Esther’s fear and wariness of men hinder her growing love for the professor? I must admit I’m a sucker for the professor falling in love with the student trope and this story did not disappoint. It really drew me in and made me want to know more about what happens to John and Esther.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen is an entertaining story about an attorney who is searching for his friend’s son. When his friend confesses on his deathbed that he has a child, his father, a wealthy baron, enlists Graham’s help to find the little boy. Searching local orphanages brings him to a school run by Miss Ellie Perkins. He’s roped into teaching when one of the teachers unexpectedly marries and leaves. He uses the opportunity to search out the heir and also get to know Ellie better. I loved Graham and his romantic interludes with Ellie and his fun interactions with the children. There’s also a hint of danger which makes the story even more of a page turner.

This is a fabulous compilation that you don’t want to miss and a fun book to read just before school starting.

This was a fun anthology to read. I love these anthologies, they are great stories and just the right length. I can sit and read one and still get my chores done.
Blessing in Disguise by Sarah Eden. This story was about Winnifred Fitzsimmons, she was chosen from her small town to go to school and get an education to be a doctor. However times as they were she had to dress up as a man to attend University. Near the end of her schooling there was worries and speculation regarding her/him. Liam was asked to investigate. While doing so, he discovered the truth along with the fact that he liked her. But if he came out and gave the information he had come upon she would be kicked out of school and worse. Sometimes choices in life and not black and white.
An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes. Esther was a young little girl, whose mother was very sick. However her mother taught her how to read and told her that as she read books she would be able to travel far and wide. After the tragic passing of her mother and brother and the death of her father she goes to live with Mrs. Parker. She expects to be taken in as a servant, however she is treated as a royal guest. She is sent to school to gain an education. While there she encounters Professor Lind. They care for each other but due to the circumstances can't do anything about it. After the professor quits, Esther discovers some of his shady past. But is reminded that not all children take after their parents in lifestyles.
Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen. This is a story about Mr. Graham Lucas, he is a solicitor to Baron Francis. After losing his son (and Lucas's best friend). The Baron asks him to locate his previously unknown grandson. Graham follows all the leads and ends up at a kindergarten school. Here they teach the young kids from orphanages. The headmistress Ellie Perkins encounters Graham during a stressful day and puts him to work teaching a class. Through teaching and interacting with the children, he finds the grandson. But there is always hardships out there, someone who doesn't want the grandson to be found. Tries to destroy an orphanage. But with strength and endurance Ellie and Graham connect Baron and grandson and discover they have found what they didn't even know they were looking for. We find may blessings in unexpected places.

I was given an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and were given voluntarily.

I love a quick read, especially when it's packed with as much variety as this anthology. Michele Paige Holmes heartwarming story touched with its poignancy and depth. Sarah Eden's delightful tale of mistaken identity and disguise was as entertaining as it was witty. Nancy Campbell Allen's historical details and unusual characters made for a whimsical and original romance.

Short, entertaining reads

Some of my favorite authors in one place. Fun stories about women and education with happy endings. The second story ended very abruptly. Way too abruptly. That's my only complaint. Clean and sweet. I would read this one again.

Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden
I did like this story but have to admit I didn't find it very engaging and the story dragged a little for me. It was very cute and I thought the relationship between Winnifred and Liam was really well developed especially within the space of a novella. No gripes, just wasn't my favourite read.
3 stars.

An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes
I loved this story - so much so that I stayed up to finish it, I couldn't get enough. It was definitely Esther's story and she gets the most depth, with John being great but not as extensively fleshed out. I loved this romance, it was so sweet and cute and earned. I enjoyed the growth in Esther. This just brought a smile to my face. I do wish we got an epilogue for this story though, as it ended quite abruptly for me.
4 stars.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen
This was my least favourite of the 3 books but was still easy and nice to read. I just didn't feel the same connection to the characters.

Two authors that I knew and was prepared to be amazed by did not let me down. And the third author was new to me, but a delightful read as well. Each story was unique from the others, a plus when reading three similarly themed stories in one go. I wanted more from each of them - in the best ways.

I really liked "Blessing in Disguise." It was fun to watch Liam and Winnie's relationship grow and to see Winnie and her town beat the system.

"Unexpected Education" was a nice rags to riches story. I did feel like men in general were given a worse rap than they deserve.

I didn't really care for "Good Heir Hunting," which was a little surprising, since there wasn't miscommunication/withholding of true thoughts that had to be resolved between the main characters, and I usually consider it a leg up for stories when they don't have it. In spite of that, I found it a bit formulaic and without character.

Content: clean, no profanity or sex.

I really enjoyed all three novellas and the overall theme to this collection. The theme gentlewoman scholars is a fresh idea and the stories were new storylines I hadn’t read before. Blessing In Disguise by Sarah Eden caught my attention from the beginning and I could not put it down. I loved the characters and hoped all would work out for them. An Unexpected Education by Michelle Paige Holmes really tugged at my emotions. Esther comes from hard circumstances but she exemplifies her name. Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen is a sweet story of looking for someone that was lost and finding so much more. I read this novellas much too quickly and was wanting more.

For me, these three wonderful stories were about more than just strong women able to stand on their own in a traditionally man's world. Each one was about connecting with someone, whether it was family, friends, coworkers, or the men they fell in love with. And right now, in our Covid world, I think that is something that we are all looking for and can relate to right now.

I received an advanced copy, and thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this book.

The problem with collections is that they contains many different stories, from many different authors, and the fact that you love one, doesn’t mean that you will love, or even enjoy, the rest.

Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden
This book involved “Fred”, a woman in disguise, who allows herself to fall for the very man who endangers her position in collage. It contained instant love and attraction, an intriguing mystery, and a rather daring decision as the ending.
Content: kisses only

An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes 2 stars
This was my least favorite. I was not impressed by the mature content. Or the romance. Or the way the characters abruptly changed their minds at the end.
Esther’s abusive father dies and leaves her with an innate distrust of men. She’s sent to school by a generous benefactor, who wants to enable Esther to live a life safe from men. Overnight, Esther she goes from an abused daughter to a rich scholar.
Content: Esther has a drunk, abusive father . A discussion about what Pandora’s box and what the gods’ intended with it and comparing Pandora to Eve. Christian John is mentioned. Biblical Esther is described as "a woman who grovelled before a king and did what women do best - fed a man and plied him for favors with her body". Kisses.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen
This story was my favorite from this collection.
This story had a great, strong female character in Ellie. It was lots of fun to watch her staying polite but firm, and slowly falling for Graham. Sure, there were a few too many mentions of how Ellie never thought she’d find a man who appreciated her, or how Graham never felt this way about a woman. But between the interesting plot and its mystery, and the great characters, it was almost forgivable.
Content: an illegitimate son, heated kisses and caresses, a man suggestively invites Ellie to spend lots of alone time with him, and she quickly puts him in his place

Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden
Dr. Poole from the school of medicine, and Rev. MacDonnell, the provost, tasks Liam with uncovering the puzzle that is Fred, a student about to graduate as a medical doctor. They wanted him to find out what it was that made Fred peculiar. They did not want anyone untoward graduating from their prestigious school. What Liam found out was Fred was not the person he claimed to be. His sister Winnie was living in the same apartment as Fred when Liam knocked on her door. Liam attempted to find out about Fred through her. He very much enjoyed Winnie’s company and found he was falling in love with her. He finally realizes that Winnie and Fred are one and the same. Winnie had so desperately wanted to become a doctor but at this period of time it was not allowed for women to do so. However, the small town where Winnie was from needed a doctor badly, but because of the shortage of men due to the Crimean War and Winnie’s desire to be a doctor, the town paid for her tuition and room for the full four years until she graduated. Fred was in a conundrum as to what to tell Dr. Poole. He did not want to give Winnie away but at the same time he didn’t want to be deceitful either. The solution to his dilemma eventually was a very clever one which allowed Winnie/Fred to graduate and earn her doctorate. I loved the way these two got together eventually, another one of Liam’s very clever solutions.

An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes
I absolutely loved this story! I appreciated the slow burn ... I guess it wasn’t quite a romance yet as Professor Lind was a teacher at the school where Lady Parker sponsored Esther to complete her education. What little Esther was taught to read was at the hands of her dying mother when she was quite young. Her father was a drunk abuser and taught her older brother to abuse as well. They both were killed in an explosion at the mill where they worked while Esther found herself homeless. Lady Parker hired Esther and gave her a home after learning her excellent seamstress skills. She became like a mother to Esther and Esther like a daughter to her. Lady Parker sponsored Esther at Bedford College to gain an education as a lady so that she would not have to depend upon any man to support her. It was at Bedford that she became acquainted with Professor Lind, a gentle and thoughtful soul. They shared a mutual love for all things literature. Professor Lind was able to see inside Esther’s heart while reading her essays and likewise Esther was inspired by him.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen
Graham was unexpectedly pulled into a kindergarten classroom to stand in as a substitute due to the last minute notice of the previous teacher. Miss Perkins was the founder of the school and caught him off guard in desperation. Graham had approached her to try to find the previously unknown child of his deceased friend. One afternoon turned into a few weeks and Graham was finding he loved being a kindergarten teacher. He also found he loved the school mistress. A tragedy struck one night as the local orphanage which housed the small students was on fire. Oh my poor heart went out to them. I could not help but get chocked up over it. But all’s well that ends well and this story found the young heir and Graham and Miss Perkins found each other.

I so enjoyed each one of these stories, masterful story tellers all. I can easily guarantee that if you love historical romance that you will fall in love among the pages of these stories.

Looking at the above list of bookshelves I've listed for this book, it sounds like it could be really hard with abuse, violence, murder etc.... Don't let that scare you. Little of it happens on the page. We just know that it happened.
I really enjoyed these stories. This book is likely my favorite in the Timeless Victorian Collection.

Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden
I always love Ms. Eden's books and enjoyed this story. I loved seeing a woman do what it takes to gain the education that allows her to be the village doctor of which they are in great need. And I loved seeing a man make concessions in his own life plan to gain the happily ever after they seek.

An Unexpected Education by Michelle Paige Holmes
Esther has a horrendous start in life and I loved that she didn't allow that to ruin her chance for a better future. I adored her benefactress and thought that John was a dreamy hero with a wonderful respect for women, also overcoming his upbringing. There really were few similarities at all but for some reason I just kept envisioning Anne of Green Gables and the older man that falls for her. I can't think of his name-the father of her student. But honestly, John was dreamier than him anyway.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen
I liked this story and found a lot of humor in the set up for Ellie and Graham. But I didn't love it as much as the other two stories. I don't know enough about the Victorian Era but some things in this story seemed a little too modern to me. Maybe they were perfectly in line but I wondered more than once if a phrase or word was accurate to the time period. When did kindergarten come into being in England? This story doesn't state the year so perhaps it is later in time than the other two. The insta-love was a bit too much for me and the first kiss was pretty edgy by comparison to the other stories. Still, I loved how Graham took to his role as a kindergarten teacher and found he loved it. I can picture my husband doing that and it is beguiling.

Overall I loved the book.

All of these stories were delightful!

#1 Blessing in Disguise (by Sarah Eden) 4 1/2 stars
This was a great story! The time: 1858. The place: Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. Engineering student, Liam Rafferty has been asked to solve a mystery at the medical college. There is a strange student that has drawn the attention of Dr. Poole. He is baffled by the singular, shy behavior of one Fred Fitzsimmons. Liam has a talent for solving puzzles and mysteries, so his help is being sought to answer Dr. Poole’s questions. Liam’s world is about to be changed by the mystery…

#2 An Unexpected Education (by Michele Paige Holmes) 4 1/2 stars
Very good story! Esther Sessions had a horrendous childhood. Her sweet mother died early on; her cruel father and mean brother killed in a manufacturing explosion. As she serves as a lady’s maid/companion to Lady Parker, she has the opportunity to be sponsored by her to attend a special college to further her education. This unique opportunity is gratefully received, and she works hard. It is there Esther’s limited little world is expanded in many ways.

#3 Good Heir Hunting (by Nancy Campbell Allen) 4 1/2 stars
What a sweet story! Solicitor Graham Lucas hears his best friend’s confession on his death bed. He admits to having a young son, a surprise to both Graham and his friend’s father, Baron Francis. The only clues are the boy’s mother’s name “Mary Smith” and that she was probably living in Liverpool. The Baron asks Graham to find the mother and child. Upon arrival in Liverpool, Graham discovers Mary is dead and the child is an orphan. He proceeds to the kindergarten school to find little Stephen Smith, but surprise, there are two of the same name! Director of the school is owner, Ellie Perkins. A crisis ensues and after a brief interview, Graham agrees to “teach” a group of kindergarteners for the day. It’s a fun premise and comical at the same time! One day of teaching turns into two as Graham tries to figure out which of the Stephan Smiths could be the Baron’s heir. Oh, and Ellie is pretty fascinating too…

Included in this volume are three stories about women scholars. From past experience, I am sure these short stories are new to this publication.

BLESSING IN DISGUISE (Sarah M. Eden) -- E
This is quite a unique story about an orphan, Fred Fitzsimmons, who is finishing a doctor's degree at Trinity College in Dublin. However, two of Fred's professors suspect there is something off about the student and want it ferreted out before graduation. To that end, they ask for Liam Rafferty, an engineering student with a reputation for solving riddles and mysteries.

As Liam figures out the oddity of Fred, he also learns that he may destroy a life if he is not careful. This story is rare and touching.

AN UNEXPECTED EDUCATION (Michelle Paige Holmes) -- VG
Esther Sessions is a product of the Liverpool slums. When a factory explodes, killing Ester's father and brother, Esther has an opportunity to attend Bedford Women's College in London. Esther latches onto that opportunity to provide for herself by studying hard.

Her favorite teacher is Professor John Lind, a kind teacher of literature who speaks to Esther's heart. However, when he quits teaching suddenly, Esther is morose. Esther's benefactor makes some inquiries. This was a bit too magical but delightful.

GOOD HEIR HUNTING (Nancy Campbell Allen) -- E
On Bertie's deathbed, he admitted to his baron-father that he was the father of an illegitimate boy. The Baron sends his solicitor-nephew to look for the child and his mother in Liverpool.

It is a chaotic first day of school at the kindergarten of Ellie Perkins. Suddenly, she finds out that she is one teacher short. When Graham Lucas arrives and tells the headmistress that he is looking for an orphan, she entreats him to teach her class until she can find another teacher. Graham agrees because there are two Stephen Smiths, and he's not sure which one is the child he is seeking. This is a delightful story.

Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M Eden
So many wonderful things about this book! I absolutely love that Liam is intelligent and great at problem solving. Yet he is not egocentric, but humble and kind. Winnie is funny and brave. I cannot imagine leaving what you know to pose as someone else to get the education to help your town. What wonderful and brave people those citizens must also be to find the means to support Winnie in her doctoral efforts. I love that Liam learns to look for the less obvious solutions. I enjoyed the problem-solving without lots of drama and breaks in communication.

An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes
Esther has had so much horror and heartbreak that stems from her own father. Yet she continues to work hard and live as her mother would have wanted. I found her to be a great character with strength and determination. I love that she got to attend school, thrive in her education, and that she got to see men who are kind and supportive. I also found John to be a great character and love his sacrifices to prove himself to Esther.

Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen
Graham is a humble and kind man who gives and supports the family of his best friend. I loved the humor in his becoming a kindergarten teacher and the adjustments in his mindset to be able to accomplish this task. He is a good man, and that shows through his character. Ellie is a strong and capable woman with great desire and determination to help children. I love her love and also her success in a time when women weren't thought to handle that kind of job. The two mesh will together and are great in their hunt for the heir Graham is searching for. I love the relationship they find along the way.
