Very very cute and beautiful illustrations. It is a little short and the ending a little too abrupt for my liking, so I am deducting half a point. Would be a great addition to any day.
The story is weird and I would never recommend reading it to kids. It's the story of an egg and a seed who become best friends. The seed grows roots and the friendship grows stronger. One day, the egg becomes a bird, and that's when the story turns bad. The narrator describes the bird as "ugly, with wings that resemble wet hair". You would expect the seed to reassure her friend and tell her she is beautiful just the way she is, and to be happy for her growth. But instead, the seed validates the bird's fear of "what people would say" and tells the bird that "she gets it" and that she can hide with her. What??
Ultimately, the bird grows bigger and stronger and decides to go see the world. She flies above mountains, lakes, forests, oceans, and decides to settle in the most "marvellous" place of all... wait for it... the city!!! Where she eats rotten food from the garbage, makes friends and chills on sculptures.
You would think the story has had enough weirdness, but no, let's make the original egg become pregnant! And what would a pregnant bird do? The story will tell you...
I usually only use a 1-star rating when I consider that a book shouldn't be read to kids. This one is one of them. The book pretty much says, "if you are born ugly or become ugly, you should hide your ugliness from society and care about what people say. And that's what friends are for, validate your fears and hide you!"
This has to be one of the sweetest books I've ever read. It follows Pip and Egg who become friends, we get to watch their journey together. The story is beautiful and refreshing and the illustrations are so cute and fit the story so well!
Really loved the artwork in this story! It's a storybook that does stay with you for a little bit, not because it's profound or special or anything, but it's just a warm blanket really.
