* I received an eARC of this book via Netgalley. All opinions in this review are my own.

This was SO adorable! I haven't come across these comics on social media so this book was news to me. I love the drawing style. It's simple and detailed just enough to look good. The author also knows how to carry an overarching story throughout the novel and weave it into the stories from the short comic strips, which is something I've seen a handful of times since I've been reading graphic novels.

This is an adorable coming-of-age memoir, in graphic novel format, about a smol pink-haired girl named Beanie who draws funny pictures, loves snacks and sleeping in, and is obsessed with puppies 👧💕🐶 It is a chronological collection of "acutely relatable" memories from her life (as the title says), spanning babyhood to adulthood. Definitely relatable and 100% cute. 5 stars for Beanie! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Fans of Sarah Andersen's Sarah's Scribbles comics (Adulthood Is a Myth etc.), especially, will enjoy this one.

Thanks to #Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for making this book available to me for an honest review.
I have been following Alina Tysoe's work on Instagram for a long time and they have always brought me nostalgic comfort no matter the mood I am in. Her illustrations are so comically eccentric and absolutely self-aware that it makes it easy to read and love.

What's Up, Beanie? is a collection of short moments in Alina's life that tells us a lot about her as a person and her relationship with her family and the world in general. These illustrations are so genuine that you tend to see yourself on the pages. As someone who lacks interest in social interaction and always appear to be the odd one out in social occasions, it was amazing to see her put some levity and fun into her interpretation of events.

She illustrates growing up and the pains associated with family and moving away to start one of hers. I absolutely loved it and I would highly recommend it.

A heartwarming autobiography in comics. I was thrown a bit since the setup indicates that will have the author's young self interact with their current self, but that angle gets dropped pretty quickly for a set of pretty conventional childhood, college, and young adult comics. The thing that saves it is Tysoe's characterization of herself. She's quirky and manages to express comfort and humor in her lateral thinking, obsessions, and anxieties. Her young child self is especially charming.

English Review Below.

It's the first time I've heard of this comic artist, but I'll be keeping my eyes on her. These are relatable and adorable comics in the same vain of Sarah Anderson's books, about love, family, loving pets more than humans, and awkward social interactions. The author draws some moments from her childhood, teen, and adult life. They are adorable, funny, cute, and relatable AF.

I thank Netgalley for the digital ARC

5/5

So, wow. When this book showed up on NetGalley I was quick to respond, because I've loved the Beanie comics for a while now. I follow them on Instagram to get my daily comics and all the cute Baby Beanie faces. This comic collection/book did certainly not disappoint. I was really happy to read this early and it made me giggle out loud.

I see my own personality back a lot in these comics, and I think it's why I love them so much. I see my own inner child, but also my own teen and adult come back in these comics. If you want to decide if this books is for you, I would maybe suggest checking a few of the comics on the artist's Instagram and if the first few make them smile, order the book. Give yourself that entertainment.

Tysoe, thank you for your beautiful job on these comics and I hope to see many more of them, and thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this early. I have been so excited to read this.

Thank you, Netgalley and the author for the ARC
These comics talk about the life of Beanie, who loves dogs and sometimes can be a complete weirdo! So, The Comic begins with Baby beanie time traveling to the future and meeting her adult self. There are a lot of relatable things and a lot more self-love!
This is soo me :D

I could relate to Beanie on a spiritual level :D. Day to day shenanigans of baby Beanie, Teen Beanie, and Adult Beanie was so fun to read!

I'm glad I found another cute, funny and relatable comics.
The book is divided into three parts: Baby Beanie, Teen Beanie and adult Beanie. Each one presents adorable and/or humorous pieces of the author's life. All very relatable, I must say.
Some of Beanie's characteristics I relate quite a lot is her love for dogs 😍, and if "my childhood me" would visit me, I'm sure she would ask the same question Baby Beanie did to Adult Beanie, "Where are the dogs?", and that's one of the few things I have been able to accomplish, at least she wouldn't be so disappointed of the adult we've become 😅.

The digital and hardback versions of this book will be published on 03 August 2021

Gentle and cute slice-of-life webcomics from the memory of Alina "Beanie" Tysoe, covering her young childhood in Russia, her teen years in New Zealand and adulthood in Canada.

Mild, pleasing humor.

What’s Up, Beanie? is a super cute compilation of comics that reminded me of the carefree feeling of childhood. You’re introduced to the coming-of-age story about a girl named Beanie who has pink hair. She experiences hilariously awkward and relatable situations that we’ve all been through. I also love how adorable and funny the drawings are. If you need something to boost your mood, Beanie will do just that for you, especially since this book has lots of puppies in it. So endearing and much needed in the world today when things are still looking a little bleak - the perfect pick me up.

OMG, I am so so hyped that I get to read this book early. I have been following Beanie comics for some time now and I am excited that there will be a whole book collecting the comics. I knew there would be plenty I would recognise, but since I have been following so long there would also be ones I may not remember right away. And anyway, I don’t mind re-reading this, this comic is just the best and makes me laugh, something that, given the news we are going to get this evening (Jan 12th), is sorely needed.

I love that this book is split up in parts. We begin with mini Beanie, go to Teen Beanie, and then end up with Adult Beanie. That is just perfect. Adult Beanie does pop up sometimes to talk to Mini Beanie about how things are now. But that is perfect, I love the reactions of Mini Beanie on the revelations of the older one. But back to that I love that the book is split up, normally her comics are totally random on what you may get each week. I am generally not a big fan of Teen Beanie for instance, and Mini Beanie is cute but at times just a bit too much. So this book is perfect to have as you can just go to the Beanie of your choice without having to search or go through lots and lots of comics. Though I have to say that I was surprised how little Teen Beanie there was in this book, it was 20-ish pages, which just feels weird as the Mini and Adult get so many more pages (+/- 100 each).

All in all, I had tons of fun reading this. Seeing the antics of Mini Beanie, read how Teen Beanie got to live in a new country, see tons of doggies in the Adult Beanie and how her relationship with Mike started (plus so many relatable comics in that part). I just love this artist’s style and how she draws things. Things are just cute and I love the expressions on human and animals. And those last pages were just chef kiss perfect! Highly recommended! Will be adding this one to my collection when I can.

What’s Up Beanie?
Author & Illustrator: Alina Tysoe
Genre: Comics
Pages: 226
Publication Date: 8/3/2021

Description: This is a collection of web comics about Beanie. The book focuses on three stages of her life – child, teenager, and adult. The book starts with adult Beanie making tea for a 4-year Beanie and explaining how she got to this point. The comic is described as slices of life and does not have an over-arching narrative.

What I liked about this book:
*The artwork is adorable and colorful. Baby Beanie is so cute and I loved how she learned about the world and puppies!
*I loved that the author’s love of dogs came out throughout the comic collection.
*I liked that the author varied the number of panels to match the content of the comic. Some comics had 10 panels, and some had as few as 3.

What I did not like:
*The teenager section is very short and not well-developed. For a teenager, they focused way more on Beanie cleaning and doing household chores than other teenage awkwardness.
*Some of the comics were cliché such as one person (in this case Beanie) being a bed hog with their partner.
*I feel like I was missing context for a lot of these comics. If you look at the author’s website, each comic has a brief statement about what she was getting at and asking the audience a question. I would have loved to see that in this book to help understand why she is jumping to these different topics.

Overall, this was an enjoyable comic with colorful, adorable artwork – particularly the baby Beanie section. I’d recommend it based on the baby Beanie section, artwork and the love of dogs throughout the comic collection.

I love this so much!!
I'm a big fan of Alina/Beanie. Here we get the full story from baby Beanie to adult Beanie and it was a joy to watch her grow. I laughed, got nostalgic and laughed again with all the occurrences and little things that happened to our littlr Bean..
The art style feels homey and cozy and it gives you these happy vibes that make you wanna go through your old pictures and remember all the things you forgot about, or as Beanie says "all the little things that made/make us happy".
New favorite graphic novel for sure.

I received an ARC in change of an honest review through NetGalley, all the opinions are my own. Thank you to the publisher for the ARC.

When I saw this comic on NetGalley I decided that I HAD to read it because I'm a huge fan of the artist and have been following her on social media for a while.

So in the comic we follow the author, Beanie, from childhood into adulthood after being visited by time traveling baby Beanie (which I found really funny and unique).
Some of the panels I had already read them in Alina's instagram account but I still enjoyed them.
The comic feels very relatable and nostalgic especially in the "baby Beanie" and "teenage Beanie" phase. Even though we all might live somehow differently I bet that there are some panels to which one could think "that happened to me when I was a kid" or "I have also felt like that, it's good to see that someone is going through the same". As for example, moving to a new city and having to make new friends or just having a bad day for no apparent reason besides the fact of feeling sad.

Overall the theme of the book is very lighthearted and funny but it does have some moments where it depicts anxiety and depression. Making the reader invested in the story and making the book even more relatable.

When my days refused to end and nights refused to begin, immense solace was found in the worlds represented by animations and comics.
When my mornings saw deep calm and evenings danced with charm, my joy was enhanced by the antics of stick figures  and 2D characters.
Whatsupbeanie is one such page that has never failed to fill my heart with 'awws' that burst through and wrap me up in their warm, fuzzy cloaks.
Baby Beanie, Teen Beanie and Adult Beanie, all seem like snapshots of myself  and people I know and I can't help but marvel at the feeling of  relatibility these few strokes on paper can generate.
I've lost track of the number of times that I've shared one of Beanie's antics with a friend or family member with a message  asking ''Does this ring a bell?''
Naturally, when I saw that Alina Tysoe is releasing a book with her most popular strips along with new exclusive ones, I was itching to get my hands on it.
The book is as adorable as the instagram page, if not more.  Baby,Teen and Adult Beanie are all part of it and her antics with her parents and sisters, her immense love for dogs, her anxieties as a teen, her observations as a twenty-something  have all been structured and presented extremely well.
I'm glad that  Beanie will reach a lot more people through this format and spread more cheer around the world.

I would definitely love to have this  book on my bookshelf to give a few smiles to whoever visits it.
Thank you, Netgalley and the publishers for an e-Arc of this.

“What’s Up, Beanie?” really is true to its title, because indeed it couldn’t be more relatable and accurate about life and the events and mishaps of going through all stages of life.

I loved the artwork; it was simple but incredibly adorable and… dogs! Because I couldn’t relate more than I did with someone who just loves dogs so much, since a child and into adulthood! It’s a simple book and yet so deep in it’s meaning, and I think everyone can relate to most if not all of the situations depicted in it.

It was a fun read, with some important advices we should all remember as we go through life and sometimes find ourselves in not-so-great moments.

This was a very cute graphic novel. The artwork was beautiful and I really liked all of the main characters, especially Beanie and her sisters at the beginning. Her relationship with her boyfriend (and then husband) is so wholesome, their scenes felt very homey and comfy. It is separated in different sections, baby, teen and adult, and I really enjoyed seeing her growth. I think the section I enjoyed the most was baby Beanie, and in my opinion it was the funniest, but the most relatable for me was (obviously) Adult Beanie. I definitely saw myself in several scenes.

In “What’s Up Beanie,” the titular character 5 year old Beanie travels forward in time and meets up with her adult self and they reminisce about different stages of Beanie’s life. The comics travel from the stages “Baby Beanie” to “Teenie Beanie” and finally “Adult Beanie.”

This was an absolute delight to read. It’s a very fun and light novel as you travel through various points of the main character’s life and learn about her love for dogs. I also really enjoyed the message of allowing yourself to be happy in the present, without regard of what may happen on the future.

I loved this!

I’ve actually been following Alina on Instagram for a while now and have seen some of the comics in here before, but they still made me smile. I even found myself laughing out loud to myself a couple times.
I love how relatable some of the situations were as well. I was reading and just thought “I do that!”
And the art! So cute! I really can’t wait to see if we’ll get another book like this!

Aww, a cute set of comics. It's a great coffee table book that's very wholesome, and as the title says, very relatable.
There were a few moments that crept up on me (I will always remember you, Svetlana -- and yes, apparently I have a thing for trees). I love Beanie's weirdness, and some of the things she does I do, too. These comics are a reminder of self-acceptance... and that being weird is usually more fun.

Adorable, light and relatable on many levels. The artwork is truly super cute, I love how the book is sectioned off into little segments for the story snippets. Very cute family relations, nice progression into teens and adult life. Seeing the change between younger Beanie and the adult version was nice and realistic, but I like how certain things remained the same. Overall such an enjoyable read, I discovered there’s a WEBTOON so I cant wait to read more!
