Mutts #5

Our Mutts

Rate this book
Deceptively simple yet strikingly profound, MUTTS is a comic strip that speaks to fans of all ages. In Patrick McDonnell's animal-centric world, Earl, the dog, and Mooch, the cat, provide both postulations and punch lines, enlightenment and entertainment. They seem innocent, yet speak volumes. "Kids will immediately take to the funny-animals look of the strip," wrote Mark J. Estren in Virginia Parent , "but there's plenty here for adults, too." Indeed there is. From musings about friendship to the benefits of adopting shelter animals, these two and their furry pals hammer out the mammalian issues of the day.

The late Charles Schulz described MUTTS : "I think the best new comic strip to come along has been MUTTS . . . . The little dog and cat are just innocent creatures, and all the characters are funny and fun to look at." MUTTS is a true classic.

My last new-to-me MUTTS collection, Our Mutts V is cute, clever, and plenty of fun!

I recognized many of the panels from the MUTTS Sunday books, and remembered a few from newspaper days.

This is not a bad thing, it is more like seeing old friends.

And it is nice to know that whenever I need a giggle break in the future, all I have to do is head to the desk cubby and choose any one of my MUTTS books.

See you later, Earl and Mooch!

In the fifth Mutts collection, McDonnell shows his interest in conservation, as a kitten sets off to save the tigers. He also begins a continuing emphasis on shelter adoptions. All this, and funny too!

O Patrick McDonell nunca desilude
A dupla Mooch e Earl é deliciosa

You know, "Mutts" isn't that funny of a comic, but it does offer up a sincerity and genuineness that typically doesn't make its way to the funny pages. It's not roll-your-eyes cutesy like "Family Circus" or anything. It just reads really honest. There's a heart in "Mutts" that isn't in any other comic. It also carries a message (pet adoption, species preservation, etc) without going overboard. Instead, it gets you to consider anything it has to offer, simply because the whole thing just seems really honest and conversational.

It's also impressive how much can be said with so little. The characters have their distinct personalities without there ever being much dialogue. It's delightful.

Another Mutts book

Adventures in attempts to hibernate. Mooch posing as a lion. Shtinky being moved by the plight of tigers. Mooch hiding out in the closet because he needs his space. Riffs on the first song of spring.

Summer had a long sequence of Crabby being #$@#$^@ crabby. October had a series on takes on horror movie monsters. Sourpuss's hatred of Monday -- and other days -- lasts all week. Shelter stories return.

And more bits of wit.
