Deputy Sheriff Shawn McDuff can’t figure out why the new teacher in Mountain Bend seems so familiar, but Lisa Halldor’s evasive answers to his inquiries confirms his suspicions they have met before. When he sees her struggling to focus and respond during a scene at his private club, he intervenes and finds himself as drawn to Lisa’s submissive nature as he is determined to unearth her secrets.
Lisa never forgot the teenage boy who came to her rescue the first night in a new foster home, but she never imagines a nameless, faceless stalker will send her fleeing to his hometown for safety twenty years later. When it becomes obvious Shawn’s memory isn’t as acute as hers about that night, she keeps that fond memory to herself.
A threat against Lisa’s life forces the truth from her, but will Shawn’s protectiveness be enough to save her from a person so determined to see her dead? Shawn’s long ago vow to keep Lisa safe is put to the test as he works fast to make sure she hasn’t come into his life again just to be taken away by a madman.
I live in the Midwest with my husband and two dogs, enjoy spending time with my daughter, babysitting her two dogs, reading and working puzzles. We have traveled extensively, but I much prefer being a homebody.
I began writing erotic novels with an emphasis on erotic spanking five years ago never dreaming that I would get published. I just celebrated the release of my eleventh title and am very thankful to my publisher, Pink Flamingo, for taking a chance on me and giving me the opportunity to enjoy a fun career. While my earlier books lean more towards straight erotica that will appeal to only a very select audience, my last five books are erotic romances. I enjoy hearing all comments from readers. You can reach me at BJWane@cox.net.
My summer holiday’s started with a “little” work in our kitchen,so what i needed was a quick, not too intense, story. This one fit the bill nicely,a little romance with a splash of kink, and a touch of suspense.
Lisa and Shawn meet as children when the foster home they’re placed in turns into a very bad place. Shawn,Clayton and Dakota have been abused by the “man” of that house for too long, and they plan to get out that night. But then Shawn hears him in the bedroom of the girl that was added to the household that same day,and hearing her cry out makes him change course and take her with them. Father Joe,the only man they trust, finds a safe place for all 4 kids, and they don’t see eachother for the next 20 years. Until Lisa is suffering from a stalker and needs a safe place again. Guess what Father Joe suggests…. Staying near the boy that made her feel so very safe all those years ago,the one who’s haunted her mind all that time, seems like a good idea. Until he turns out to be not only a véry attractive lawman, but a delicious Dom,too…. One that sees tóó much, one that is tóó interested in her. But why fight the attraction? Oh,that’s right….the stalker! Plus the fact she’s not going to stay….right?
Like i said,a delectable little story. One that didn’t require too much thinking, just feeling. That helped me relax at the end of the day… And i was glad i found it,still waiting patiently in my Apple Books library after all this time.
Protector is the first book in the Doms of Mountain Bend series. Shawn is facing a crossroads in his life, but when the new schoolteacher in town catches his attention, he can’t help but be drawn to her. He sees the shadows and secrets lurking in her eyes and can’t help but feel a sense of familiarity. But as their passions ignite, the danger that stalks her draws close. Will Shawn be able to protect Lisa and convince her to open up her heart?
Oh my goodness, I absolutely loved this book! It had all of the swoony goodness with suspense, romance, secrets, steamy scenes, facing your past, and finding what it means to truly live. Shawn and Lisa stole my attention and my heart the more that I read through these pages, and I couldn’t help but cheer for their love and hope that the bad guy got caught before anything too dangerous could happen. I think one of my favorite things about Lisa was that she thought she knew what she wanted, with her life, the scenes she participated in, and while her stalker scared her, it also shook her enough to realize she needed some change. I loved that Shawn helped thaw some of the ice that surrounded her heart, but I would have loved to see her seek some extra therapy just so all that weight wasn’t still in her mind and heart or placed on Shawn. But, phew, what a hero Shawn was! I loved how protective he was, of animals and humans both, and I loved that while he knew she might only be there temporarily, he was willing to try for more! I loved them together! I loved this connection from their pasts, but I also loved their steamy scenes they had together and the tender moments, too. I liked how the danger slowly stalked Lisa closer and closer and there were scenes where I was sitting on the edge of my seat! So good! I’m so curious about what type of women will bring Shawn’s brothers tumbling into love, so I’m definitely looking forward to more from this series! I loved this book!
As a child, when her foster father tried to sexually assault her, Lisa Halldor was rescued by three older boys living in the foster home. As an adult, when she's threatened by a stalker, her priestly mentor sends her to Mountain Bend, where the same boys are living, and one (Shawn MacDuff) is now sheriff. Their romantic and sexual relationship develops as they work on the mystery of her stalker.
As a romantic suspense, this is a good book. It would have been better if the author had gone into the villain's head more, and expanded on his life and motivations. The suspense part of the story is okay, but a little flimsy. As a BDSM romance novel, it's also a little shallow, though the writer does do a good job at developing the relationship between Lisa and Shawn, it would also be better with more depth. It's not a bad start to a new series, but I've read better books by the same author, so I was expecting more.
This is the start of a new series and therefore some background of secondary characters are also provided. I appreciated that Lisa had already turned to BDSM before she met Shawn again, although this element does not form the central tenet of the story. The childhood dramatic meeting of the characters bring some tension to the story line while the current suspense element moves the story forward. The villain in the story is a real surprise and I appreciated that it was not the normal ex boyfriend wreaking havoc in Lisa's life.
I cannot wait to read Clayton and Dakota's stories in the rest of the series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
'Protector' is book one in Bj Wane's "Doms of Mountain Bend" series. At fifteen, Shawn, Dakota, and Clayton had all been at the same foster home for about a month and they'd had enough of the abuse from the drunken man. They were sneaking out to leave. On the day they were planning to leave eight-year-old Lisa was brought into the home. The horror they'd gone through wasn't bad enough but as the boys were sneaking out, Lisa needed to be rescued. The boys had taken her to Father Joe's house asking him to help her. Father Joe agreed to help but extracted a promise from the boys that they would trust him to help them as well so they didn't run any further. All three boys were sent to a friend of the Father's in Mountain Bend while Lisa was sent to a different friend in Phoenix. Neither Shawn nor Lisa had forgotten the other and tried to get information about how the other one was doing without any luck. Twenty years later Lisa is being threatened to the point she needs to leave and hide. She winds up in Mountain Bend after accepting a temporary teaching job. This storyline was so vivid it had my nerves stretched at one point waiting to see what would happen. The drama, angst, and stress from Lisa's situation were palpable, and with Shawn not only being a Dom but the Deputy Sheriff it made for a lot of nervous energy on Lisa's part which was totally relatable. Then add the fact that the three men bought the local BDSM club where Shawn and Lisa inadvertently become play partners. This was a great read and I can't wait to see what comes next in 'Avenger'
Doms of Mountain Bend are hot, sexy, protective and Cowboys and will take what they want. The book tropes are BDSM, Erotica, Suspense, Western, Romance. It is not hard core BDSM B.J. Wane as focused these books with an emphasis on erotic spanking. The books are full of sassiness, humour, naughtiness, a lots of titillating passion, angst, a whole bunch of drama and palpable tension inducing danger. Sparks fly in this delectable tale Deputy Sheriff Shawn McDuff an experienced Dom once a confirmed bachelor finds himself at odds when a new teacher comes to town. She is in hiding but is hoping she has outrun her trouble. When her past catches up to her she finds more than she could have ever hoped. Now she just has to stay alive. If you like a little kinkiness and danger, then jump right in.
I was expecting more elaboration into parts of the story line but all loose ends were tied by the end. It was a decent quick spicy story. If given the next one in the series I would read it.
Would read more of the books from this series if I wanted a really quick entertaining read. Never found myself bored reading it. Spice level was very spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
No plot spoilers No real potential triggers although there is reference to intended child abuse but it's stopped at an early stage. As a plot device I found it distasteful. There is quite a cavalier attitude towards foster care that I found unrealistic. I understand it's used to move the story along but it is something that wouldn't be viable in real life and that irritated. The relationship is D/s based and I find that once again the author dives straight in with flogging and punishment without even discussing a limit list. It's one of the bugbears from the Miami Masters series and partly why I stopped reading the author. The characterisation isn't the strongest, I couldn't find much empathy for any of them. They were formulaic with each of the foster 'brothers' slotting into recognisable personality types. There are plenty of sex scenes and some swearing, be aware that the genre is D/s so if you don't like the genre don't buy the book. There are quite a few errors, the most irritating being one instance of part of a paragraph repeating itself. These are basic errors and should have been picked up before publishing. The plotline is actually engaging and could have been so much better if it had been smoother and not punctuated by a sex scene every time something happened. I purchased the first book in the series to see if it would draw me in, but I won't be continuing the series.
The writing was okay and the plot was fine. Lisa is a bit blah/hard to like, every answer she has is evasive, even when she is in mortal danger and acting out. Shawn has a major case of "hero-complex" and has to save everything. Shawn and lisa are thrown together and it would seem like its a match made by fate. However, there was something off about the chemistry. I am not sure what exactly was off but it never seemed to fully click. The s*x scenes were lacking connection and were decent at best. They had this back story, that was there but it felt like it was the only thing that drew the two main characters together. Eveything kept coming back to this history like a wave that never breaks. The whole thing feeds into a damsel in distress trope, that is shallow and trite. It was not compelling enough for me to read any more of this authors books.
It was recommended to me as a book that is true to BDSM, but to me we didn't truly experience the heart of any scene and I disagree with Shawn's condition of safe-wording. Basically, at one point, he said, if you safe-word out of this we will stop, not just now but everything. Safe-words should never have conditions. Safe words are consent, consent needs to be freely given.
A traumatic night in their childhood brought Shawn and Lisa together. It also separated them again almost instantly. Now, years later, another traumatic event will bring them together again. Can they overcome everything that separated them or will this second chance be over just as quickly as the first? When I started reading this book, I thought it would go in a particular direction. I was pleasantly surprised that this story defied my expectations. While Shawn and Lisa are new partners, they’re both experienced in the Lifestyle. That made those aspects of the story feel very natural and grounded. And I really liked that this wasn’t the usual stalker you see in romantic suspense; it’s an unexpected direction that I appreciated. Now that we’ve started to get to know Shawn’s “brothers”, I can’t wait to see what it takes to get them their own happily ever afters. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Booksprout.
What a great start to a new series. There are several authors who I read everything they write, and Ms. BJ Wane is one of them. She has a way of bringing life to her characters, emotions, and interactions while writing a mystery, suspense with romance. Add in dominant men, smart but feisty females, a touch of danger, a healthy dose of eroticism within a relationship, add in the spice of BDSM scenes, and you get a perfect blend within a story.
Phoenix, Arizona: The story starts twenty years prior with three foster teenaged boys in a bad situation, knowing they need to escape their abusive situation. The night they are leaving, plans in place, Shawn will hear the terror in the new young girl placed in the home. He can’t just abandon her and instead will get her to safety. Now, fast forward to the present, the three are men, all raised in Idaho by a great older couple and running the ranch. Each man has a career and is still close friends.
Lisa Halldor is a haunted woman. Just when she works through the horrors of that one foster home and the memory of that man, now she is dealing with someone stalking her. When the events go from threatening messages to attacks, she knows she needs to get away. As a teacher, she will take a temporary assignment in Idaho and then decide what to do later. Coming face to face with a memory from her past in Idaho is unsettling—especially when he doesn’t seem to recognize her. A temporary stay at the town B&B with Jen and Drew gives her new friends.
“To be honest, there was something in your voice that prompted me to take that chance. Whatever you’re fleeing from back home, I hope you’ll find solace here. It’s a great community.”
The story will have Lisa visiting the local BDSM club called Spurs—after getting a recommendation from her Phoenix club. Seeing Deputy Sheriff Shawn McDuff again is unsettling. Trying to scene with Master Simon isn’t working, and when Master Shawn steps in, things change, and she can let go. The chemistry between these two cannot be denied, and Lisa tries to stay aloof, knowing she will be leaving, but Shawn doesn’t seem to let that stop him.
The story has the good, the bad, and the evil. Lisa has no idea who or why someone has targeted her and hopes that leaving Phoenix will end that terror. But now, it appears that he has found her, and his threats are more menacing than before. Trying to avoid being around Shawn and his ability to pick up on her emotions will keep her away—but that doesn’t work with him. Now, the truth must come out—she can no longer hide this a secret.
“However, with wakefulness came a return of guilt, and regret for the way her silence had inadvertently put him at risk. She’d never wanted to bring her troubles to his doorstep, but sometimes doing what you think is the right thing can return to bite you on the butt.”
“Actions, or nonactions, in this case, have earned you consequences, not rewards.”
The story will keep the pages turning as it unfolds, keeping you on the edge-of-your-seat with harrowing moments, life and death danger, and suspense. Secrets, regrets, greed, and selfishness are all players. It also has a slow-building relationship between Shawn and Lisa. What starts with mutual attraction and agreeing to scene together at Spurs, because more between these two. But with Lisa on a temporary assignment, dealing with a stalker, and the unknown for her future, what will become of them?

She has been getting threating messages and attacks she decides to take a temp. teaching assignment in Idaho never expecting to run into a blast from the past. Upon meeting again, the magnetic pull is so intense but with her running from a stalker and thinking it would put him in danger decides to keep her secrets to herself. Will the threats continue, will her friend/protector Shawn finally learn who is behind the threats, can he show her he is still trustworthy no matter the years between them and will they find happiness?
What a fantastic read, great start to this wonderful series This is a wonderful book with the story starting with the three main male characters first introduced as teenagers in a terrible abusive home who just as they are about to run have to take a new little girl with them as she is nearly raped by the same man. The three boys had gone to the only man they could trust when they all ran together with the little girl in Shawn’s arms and that was Father Joe a friend of Shawn’s father and he had found a safe home for Lisa and a safe home for the three boys together on a ranch which they now run together over twenty years later Betty and Buck had saved their lives. Imagine Shawn’s surprise when that young girl from all those years before turns up teaching at the local school and also at the three means BDSM club known as Spurs and he knows that he has never forgotten her or her him. That connection from all those years before have remained with them both and she is in danger again and needs help but is reluctant to tell Shawn she’s being threatened. This is a truly wonderful read there are so many twists and turns to this story and it is obvious that if they do not discover why Lisa is in hiding, they will not be able to help and the man trying to kill her is growing more and more anxious to complete his mission as soon as possible. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
I did it again. I read the last two books before I read the first one. I have no idea, don't ask, it is built into my psyche that I reach for the wrong book first. I love to read, it isn't that I'm trying to skip to the end.
Anyway, enough of that and onto the review. The first thing I want to say is that BJ Wane's writing gets better with every book she writes. She's pushing herself to write better each and every time and that endears me to an author. I love well written, well plotted, and well told stories. And this was one of them.
Protector was plotted well, and was great an an intro to these men of Mountain Bend, except I'd already intro'd myself to them by reading #3 first, lol. But now, with Book 1, I know what I missed and might re-read them just to make sure I'm right that I loved this book.
This book was written with a deft hand. The plotting was steady, the characters well defined, the story told with emotion and love. And lastly, it was well written. Authors need to have a command of the language they use. If they don't, then they are merely playing at writing. BJ Wane knows the language and understands the nuances that exist within it.
I do recommend this book for anyone wanting to read about REAL BDSM written with a fine hand, and a thorough understanding of submission and the power exchange. This is NOT the red room of pain, because that isn't real. This book combined imagination with reality. And the author did a wonderful job!
Protector by BJ Wane is the first book in the brand-new Doms of Mountain Bend series and readers are treated to an intriguing story of childhood tragedy, emotional scars and circumstances and people that can change the course of your life. The author has again provided a gripping storyline with diverse and captivating character portrayals that leave you wanting to hold them close and heal all their hurt. Some hide behind carefree and blasé personas, but the depth of their pain is always close to the surface and occasionally glimpsed before they blank their expressions. Shawn and Lisa’s story kicks off this new series where danger and suspense keep you wondering what can possibly happen next as they each dwell on their past connection. As an avid fan of the BDSM genre, I like how the author incorporates it into the storyline while keeping the focus primarily on the drama, intrigue and combustible chemistry between a strong and competent Deputy Sheriff and a woman with a damaged soul. Protector was a thoroughly entertaining read and knowing that Clayton and Dakota have stories to come, only heightened my enjoyment. This is a great start to the series and one that will capture the hearts of BJ Wane fans as well as readers who appreciate a little D/s with their romantic suspense. So, if you read authors such as Lexi Blake, Cherise Sinclair and Stacey Kennedy, then BJ Wane should definitely be added to your list!
What a great start to a new series, i just loved the whole storyline, its intriguing to say the least. Prologue: sees three young men leaving a foster home because they have continually been beaten by the abusive father, but when Shawn was leaving he saw something that shocked him, so instead of the three men, it was three men and one young girl. Present: The three men now all grown up have brought a private club called the Spurs, all three men a Doms and enjoy what they do outside work. But its Shawn who is a police deputy whose story we now follow: Lisa need to go now... her stalker has found her again and is now sending more creepy messages, the next one dead is her. So she contacts the only person who may be able to help her.... Father Joe. He sends her to a place where she will be safe, luckily there is a fill in part time job there teaching. But she is an hour out when she gets a burst tire. Shawn is petrolling when he comes across Lisa, she seems familiar somehow, but he cant put a finger on it. He is even more intrigued when she shows up at the Spurs. Shawn somehow must get through Lisa barriers, as it seems she is running from something,!!!
A book definately not to be missed, especially if you have read books by BJ wane before, you certainly will just love this one.... delicious
BJ Wane has mastered the romantic suspense genre yet again. The first book of a new series focuses on one of three men who became friends in an effort to help each survive the horrors of living with an abusive foster parent as children. Escaping from the horrible situation, the boys get a second chance and thrive in a strict but loving foster home. Fast forward 20 years, and you see how their troubled childhood has shaped the men they have become.
From the very beginning, you are drawn into a story about the deep bond that forms from shared trauma. The drama and suspense of the story will keep you on edge, while the BDSM aspect adds a sexy thrill and romance that burns hot enough to scorch your kindle. The story is told from the two main characters’ point of view, as well as the protagonist’s. The characters are well developed, allowing you to understand the motivations of each person. The detailed world building, set in the desert of Arizona and the lush mountains of Idaho made it easy to imagine the many different locations in the story. With a satisfying conclusion, the book is very enjoyable. I ended up reading this story in one evening, and stayed up way past my bedtime. I am looking forward to reading the next books in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and relatable. The story was engaging and fast paced.

Protector is the first book in BJ Wane’s Doms of Mountain Bend series. In this first book, not only do readers get to meet two dynamic protagonists—Lisa and Shawn—but they also meet several outstanding secondary characters like Dakota and Clayton. The trio—Shawn, Dakota and Clayton forged an unbreakable bond as children in the foster care system. Through a guardian angel in Father Joe. They were whisked away to safety and a loving home in Mountain Bend, Idaho. Lisa is a strong female lead- characters wounded with emotional scars. She, too, had a guardian angel. She embraces a fake bravado attitude as she tries to navigate their daily existence while being pursued by an escalating stalker. Shawn is a strong, dynamic, alpha male lead. Destiny brought them together as juveniles in the foster care system and then set them on different paths. Ms. Wane does a spectacular job with this romantic suspense. I appreciate her two-prong plot approach. The first prong being the romantic journey of Lisa and Shawn. The second the mystery behind the identity of her stalker. I appreciate this author’s skill with creating dynamic characters allowing readers to watch their evolution as her plot unfolds. Nicely done.
Twenty years ago, Shawn McDuff rescued a little girl as he escaped the abusive foster home he was placed in with his two brothers. After that night, he didn't see the girl again, and no matter how many times he asked, he could not get any information about her other than she was well taken care of in her new place. He didn't even know her name. When Lisa finds herself being stalked, she decides to get out of Phoenix, hoping the man will lose interest. Travelling to Mountain Bend, Idaho, she meets Shawn, now Deputy Sheriff, and knows immediately who he is. He's already saved her once, and she doesn't want to impose. When danger follows, she has no choice but to tell Shawn all the details, and he works against the clock to save her again. Don't get the idea that Lisa is weak or delicate. She is a strong character, and Shawn would not have her any other way. His Dom side is immediately drawn to her, and they fall in love in the short time she plans to be in Mountain Bend. Their HEA is meant to be. If you are a fan of BJ Wane, or Dominant Cowboys, this one is particularly good.

If you like suspenseful romance with chemistry and passion you will certainly enjoy this book. Shawn rescued Lisa when she was just a young child from her foster dad’s drunken perversion. He and two other boys were at the same foster home but they were planning to run away that horrific night. When he discovered the man in her bedroom he knocked him out and took Lisa with him. The boys went to Father Joe and left the girl with him to find her a new safe home. Twenty years later their paths cross again, this time she needs his help again since she picked up a stalker who has threatened her life. Shawn is a deputy sheriff and is very protective of those he cares for and Lisa is at the top of his list. A fantastic storyline that keeps your interest from beginning to end and wonderful characters you can’t help falling in love with. A must read. Looking forward to Clayton and Drake’s stories.

This story is all about being saved from bad situations, people, and life styles... The stalker needs to change or his lifestyle will lead to his death... The little girl who becomes the teacher gets saved first from an abusive foster parent, then a stalker. They all get saved by the priest... And then the Dom who was saved by the priest saves the little girl twice. Oh and he finds love... The story follows the same standard most BJ Wane books do... With a damsel submissive, a protective Dom, his friends town and club and a bad guy. In this case the girl is from his younger past and she has a stalker. She follows him as a way to escape from her stalker but he follows her... The story has a grizzly bear in it but he doesn't actually play a role in this story... I kinda expected the city slicker rich stalker to get eaten but I guess that is maybe another story...
Protector is the first book in Doms of Mountain Bend Series. In addition, this is a new author to me.
Shawn has done very well in his adult life, but it has not always been that way. When he crosses paths with the new schoolteacher, she has his attention. Have they met before? As he gets to know her, she seems familiar, and her eyes have secrets. Together sparks fly.
Lisa has never forgotten the boy who got her out of a bad foster home. Twenty years later, can he help her again? Along the way, we get a female who knows what she wants, alpha males with a lite dose of BDSM. Romance and suspense rounds out the story.
I am looking forward to reading more in this series and from this author.
Thank you to Booksprout and the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I really enjoyed this first book of a new series. Shawn, Clayton and Dakota met when they were 15 at the foster home they lived in. They were beaten by the foster parent and decided they were leaving. On the day they left, another foster child arrived. She was just nine and sweet. Shawn rescued Lisa from the foster father and they all left to get help from a neighborhood priest, Father Joe. He gets them all into better foster families and that's the end. 20 years later, Lisa and Shawn meet again. Lisa is in trouble with a stalker and moves to where Shawn lives to get away from her stalker and take a new job. Shawn is very interested in Lisa and he lets her know. They do have a HEA. I can't wait for the other two stories!
I received an advance copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Protector by mega hot author BJ Wane is the first book in her new Doms of Mountain Bend series, and if this book is indicative of what’s to come in this series, then buckle up! It’s going to be a wild ride. Shawn, our hero, along with his two friends in foster care, Dakota and Clayton, and decide to flee their abusive foster father. But Shawn hears a little girl about to be violated in the bedroom, so he % her. Hey leaves her with Father Joe to find her a home. Years later, she’s being stalked by madman, she no clue who or why? Enter Deputy Sheriff Shawn. Lisa has a flat coming into town and meets Shawn. Will she tell him she has a stalker? Their second meeting is a definite must read that I’ll let you read that for yourself, just have a fan nearby. This first book was excellent, I’m most excitedly looking forward to both Dakota and Claytons books!
Book 1 in this series introduces us to not only Lisa and Shawn, of this story, but also to Dakota and Clayton, who are presumably getting their own books in the not too distant future. This book started with a real hit of emotion that really tugs at the heartstrings. We jump 20 years to come back to everyone as adults, with Lisa trying to shake a persistent stalker. I loved that while the idea of a stalker isn't unique, the identity of the stalker is very unusual. I liked all of the characters and appreciated the fact that Lisa took some time to warm up to, mirroring what would likely be a real response to IRL Lisa, and to be expected given her circumstances. I did find that it wrapped up just a touch quickly for me. I would have liked more of a definite to Lisa's other relationship and circumstances. A great series starter and I'm already looking forward to more.
