Rosalind Palmer was blessed with the perfect stage name. Or so she’s been told. There are just a few problems with it:
1) Her family doesn’t know she’s a stripper
2) She’d like to keep it that way
3) She got over the nickname somewhere around seventh grade.
Unfortunately—because she likes her job and she really likes her independence—her unexpected pregnancy means Rosalind’s days on a pole are numbered. Even so, she’s determined to make this co-parenting thing work.

Joey Marshall never thought much about having kids until he got the text announcing his impending fatherhood. Now it’s all he can think about. But there are a few concerns:
1) He doesn’t know anything about babies.
2) Adulting usually leads to disaster.
3) It’s his best friend’s cousin he knocked up.
First things first, making sure his baby’s mama is in this for the long haul. Because now he’s got baby on the brain, he can’t wait to make this co-parenting thing into so much more.

Now all he has to do is convince Rosalind, which shouldn’t be too hard . . . right?

Rosalind Palmer aka Cherise conquered her independence by becoming a stripper. But, all of a sudden a surprise pregnancy will not only mean her days on a pole are numbered but will throw all of her plans into a spin.

Joey Marshall is a trainer at Weight Expectations, and after he had a fun night with Cherise he wasn't expecting THAT call. After the initial shock and learning he knocked up his best friend's cousin, Joey wants to make sure Rosalind/Cherise is in it for the long haul.

I really wanted to love Weights of Wrath. I feel like the surprise pregnancy trope is often underappreciated, but it has so much potential when carefully crafted. I think M.E Carter did a great job with the characters, especially Joey. But, at the end of the day, the overall tone of the book wasn't for me. This was too cringy humor for my taste, and because I couldn't connect with it, the jokes fell flat. I wanted more of their sweet side and less awkward comedy.

Thank you Smartpants Romance for the ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review ❤️

Weights of Wrath will release wide on all retailers excluding Amazon on March 9, 2021. It will be removed from those retailers and be enrolled in Kindle Unlimited on March 11, 2021.

Whoever wrote the blurb for this book is a genius. As soon as I read it, I had to get my hands on this book. It sounded funny and unique, and I went into it with this idea of how I thought it was going to play out and from the first chapter it kept me guessing. Because I was wrong and yet I was right. It was funny, yet serious and it treated the whole thing maturely but with some laugh out loud moments.

Rosalind was a little crabby and standoffish, but she had a lot going on and throw in some pregnancy hormones and I understood her crankiness. Especially having experience with a whoops baby, it’s a weird mix of emotions. And I was lucky enough not to have the added stress of an undefined relationship with my baby daddy.

Joey made the whole book for me. He was so sweet, he reminded me of a big over excited puppy. He was just so lovable and everything he did was done with such pure motivation. He even took Rosalind’s crabby attitude in stride and just tried harder to make things easier for her. I adored him. From the first moment he was everything you could ask for in this situation. He made me laugh at his antics and he had such a positive sunny attitude it was hard not to love him.

Thankfully, Rosalind agreed with me and couldn’t resist his charms and all the effort he put into making it all work for them all. Rosalind’s family was funny and added a lot of depth to the story. I really enjoyed this and I kind of wish I had read the other books in the series, not because this wasn’t an awesome standalone but because I got a few little snippets about the earlier couples and they sounded fun. And I have a new author to stalk. YAY

‘“You’ve seen me naked, Joey. And not just at work, but with my legs wrapped around your head. I think we passed the point of privacy a long time ago.”

I climb onto her bed and settle in next to her. “I’m not going to make any assumptions about boundaries because we slept together once. I may be a selfish idiot, but I’m not as a$$hole.”

“No, it doesn’t appear that you are.” she mutters under her breath, but I hear it loud and clear. And what she says without words is she appreciates that I’m doing right by her in more ways than one.’

This was such a fun, light-hearted and quirky romance, that delivered not only on the comedy, the banter and witty back and forth between our hero and heroine but also on the romance side of things. Admittedly, surprise pregnancy stories are not my favourite, it’s just not a trope that I gravitate towards and I’m not honestly sure why, however in Weights of Wrath, author ME Carter managed to give readers an unconventional love story that had warmth, laughter and heart throughout.

Joey was such an adorable hero. He stepped up to his role, he supported, cared for and offered his help and ultimately his heart to Rosalind and their baby. He was the epitome of a story book hero. A little goofy but in a really cute and attractive way, hard-working, handsome as sin and had no qualms about Rosalind’s vocation. Even his parents were uber supportive, free thinkers and just as sweet and sincere. It was so utterly refreshing to be given a strong male protagonist who wasn’t playing games or sending mixed signals to our feisty heroine, who also knew her worth.

Rosalind was a courageous and determined and rather funny heroine. She was the embodiment of girl power, with this fabulous dry wit about her. Add in her defensive personality, drive and daring attitude and you have a dynamic and standout female protagonist. I adored her. I adored that she was proud of her work, her body, her life, and how she attained the things she wanted. She was straightforward and ballsy and Joey saw something in her that went beyond simply having an unplanned baby together. Joey was a calming and soothing influence on her, I felt like their relationship and progression was very realistic and natural. It didn’t feel forced or rushed. It was one night of unbridled passion that became so much more. A friendship born out of necessity that then bloomed into a beautiful romantic entanglement.

Weights of Wrath is my favourite ME Carter contribution to the Smartypants Romance world. She was able to bring forth and utilise her renowned skills in comedic writing alongside a subtle but scintillating love story. It was sweet, humorous, realistic, empowering and a little inspirational.

How these two found each other is beyond me but the fact we get to meet them in the midst of a surprise pregnancy and life altering decisions was a glorious gift from M.E. Carter. (BTW if there is a novella about their meet cute, I'm so here for it.)

Rosalind was a tough take no crap stripper. She is used to protecting and distancing herself so she has massive emotional walls so tall you almost can't even see her. Joey was this ginormous bodybuilding strongman who was like sunshine personified.

Carter created a gradual nuanced and non-traditional romance that I am having a hard time putting into my standard tropes. There was smoldering heat and a slow burn and forced proximity and one bed and accidental pregnancy and opposites attract and super funny moments and I need to stop before I spoil everything but take my word for it. This was no cookie cutter Rom-com because it was better.

The vulnerability and fears were tangible and the failures were sometimes hilarious and sometimes sad. In fact, at one point during the story my mom brain, wanted to pull Rosalind and Joey aside and shake some sense into them which is a testament to how invested I was in their story. Carter didn't gloss over the hard topics but instead she made them real and funny. In this book, Carter let babies cry and she let messes happen and she made us laugh while doing it with her brilliant writing.

I freakin’ ADORED this book!

I didn’t expect to, I mean, I figured I’d end up loving it because I’ve loved the other books in the series by the author, but holy hell, I was a goner from the first chapter and I NEED more of Joey and Rosalind...it’s really that simple.

Now the reason I didn’t expect to adore this book was because of Joey. In previous books I kinda sorta wanted to throttle the man a time or two, and there were still a couple of moments in this one where that feeling popped up, but to put it simply ~ he is on the laminated book boyfriend list. He hit ALL the right buttons. As for Rosalind. I adored her snark and drive. This woman definitely made her life her own and I couldn’t help but admire her. She has her quirks and her walls, but the funny thing is that I got it. I got why she felt the way she did, why she did or didn’t do things. I just got her.

As for their journey, it was simply a lot of fun to experience. They are opposites in a lot of ways, but they worked. They truly saw who the other person was and genuinely liked who that person was ~ the good, the crazy, the snarky and the unedited ~ and in the end, I absolutely loved them together.

This really was such a fun read. The angst was on the low end, which I really liked because the whole surprise baby trope can get angsty, and I just liked how everything played out. I loved catching up with Elliott and Abel and the girls. The ladies at the gym were hilarious, Rosalind’s family were awesome and I loved what Stan and Nicolas brought to the story. I have no clue who is up next on the chopping block for the series, but I do hope that Joey and Rosalind pop up because I will NEED updates!

“My virtue doesn’t matter anymore, Mom. I’m pregnant.”

Her rambling dies off quickly and ends in silence. It’s eerily quiet. I don’t like it.

“I’m not sure I heard you correctly. Can you please repeat that?”

Oh shit. She turned on her customer service voice. I’m in so much trouble.

Weights of Wrath, an all-new surprise pregnancy romantic comedy from M.E. Carter, will be available on March 11th!

I really enjoyed reading this story.
Joey was a little too good to be true. (I kept asking myself throughout the book if he was for real, and then he'd let us see a little bit more of his character, and then as a reader, I realized that yes, that's just how he's made.)
He handled becoming a dad with a surprise pregnancy with a one-night stand smoothly and effortlessly.
His laid-back go-with-flow attitude really complimented Rosalind wonderfully independent, strong character.
Rosalind was a wonderful character to read.
Her character voiced all the concerns and fears of becoming a parent, especially when becoming a parent was such a surprise.

This was a good, well-paced story and a wonderful addition to the "Cipher Office" series.

In this book we harken back to Joey, the simple and funny character in previous books. In this one he steps up to be our hero. He has a unique way of looking at things and is very progressive in his thoughts on equality. He is also very optimistic.
So, when he gets a phone call to meet up with a previous one-night stand, He thinks she might want another date. But what she wants is to tell him he is about to be a father.
Now, most men would walk away or just agree to pay child support if she can prove it, but our hero steps right up to the plate and wants to be the best dad he can. He will even take care of his child's mother.
This is a cute story with fun characters. They complement each other perfectly.

“I love how strong you are, even when things are uncertain.”

Joey is a complete ray of sunshine. He has the biggest heart, and truly doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He was a fun and hilarious character to read. He balances out Rosalind so well.

This is definitely a low angst, slightly awkward romance of two people who had a one night stand that changed both of their lives. Usually with surprise pregnancy there’s some kind of drama, this books was so refreshing without it.

Joey and Rosalinds romance really grows, doesn’t have an insta love, but they take the time to get to know each other. Joey is beyond sweet to her on their ‘first date’.

Loved all the side characters, old and new in this book. I’m looking forward to seeing them again hopefully soon!

This book has a lot of heart, and a lot of realness, which I always can expect from ME Carter’s books.

This was just the light-hearted book I needed after a string of topic-heavy stories!

Joey was just the right amount of loveable goof, balanced out with a surprisingly mature and modern view of women. He was sincere and earnest and tender and caring. And that was just with his octogenarian customers! When he learns about his impending fatherhood, he immediately steps up to the plate to be the best support/friend/father/lover he can be.

I have read other stories with goofy guys who need to step up and become honest-to-goodness adults. Some were good, and some ... not so much. This is firmly in the good category. Joey grew and became a solid and dependable partner, which I really enjoyed.

Rosalind was as smart as she was feisty. Sure, she was a little defensive about his job where her family was concerned, but can you blame her? Aside from that, this story was very positive towards sex workers. I found that a truly refreshing change.

This is hands-down my favourite M.E. Carter Spartypants Romance book. She just keeps getting better and better. I can hardly wait to read whatever she comes up with next!

We got to know Joey in Cutie and the Beast. I can't remember much but he was Abel's friend. He seemed like a good guy, somewhat clueless , happt go lucky and womanizer. I wasn't sure he could be a good dad, but here he's earnest and hard wotking trying hard. I like that he wasn't judgemental of Rosalind's past job. This isn't a new trope and done well it can be good. Just the fact these two are opposites it could get bumpy.

He was actually cute about being a dad, eager. Responding well to the announcement his one night stand is pregnant. Rosalind has a lot of walls up due to how she was raised and family. She has her insecurities. Both don't know how to be a parent and Rosalind still had to wrap her mind around the baby coming. Joey seems to be eager to be dad, all though he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed he wants to try.

Needless to say, they both seem clueless late in Rosalind's pregnancy. As for Joey and Rosalind as a couple it sort of progressed naturally though have to say. Joey is great at keeping Rosalind out of her head but he also needs to get it together for them both. This book is really about the hardship of unplanned pregnancy and two people handling all that comes with. Sadly some parts felt draggy to me, maybe needed for the story but it bored me. I like this series though and the setting is interesting.

M.E. Carter writes a really good book. This I know. Have know it for quite some time. But with every new release she impresses me all over again. Upon finishing Weights of Wrath, I was smiling and had a wonderful all-over feeling of happiness. Which is what we all want from a good book, right?
Joey Marshall had a plan and was working on it every day. Rosalind was kind of a take life day by day. When a one-night stand (note: the description of this encounter is hilarious) gives them something neither was expecting, both have to look at their lives and figure out what the next step is.

As they work through what their lives were, what they are now and what they are going to be, we get a story that was warm, witty and had a truth about pregnancy and all that encompasses. As Joey and Rosalind experience the progression of their pregnancy, we get to see their relationship develop and become something that is full of heart.

Oh, how I loved Joey and Roselind. These two together were adorable and funny. Both a little off their rockers (in a good way) and thrown together in the most awkward of ways.

This entire series is one of my favorites in the smartypants spinoffs and if you haven't started them, you must. I really love M.E. Carter's humor (much aligned with my own - of the sarcastic variety) and so I get a great escape when picking up her books. She's one of my one-click, favorite authors whom I have fallen in love with by reading her books in this series.

Weights of Wrath covers the horrors of an unexpected pregnancy with two people who don't have a clue. This makes for a fun read and also one that will pull on your heartstrings as these two learn to navigate their newfound relationship and how to be parents all at once.

I can't recommend this book enough (and the rest of the series!)

Just as expected, this story blew me away!
As M. E. Carter has proven time and time again, she knows how to deliver magnificent stories, and “Weights of Wrath” was no different. I absolutely loved this story! I may even go so far as to say that this is my favourite Cipher Office story yet!
I tend to have a particular fondness and weakness for “surprise pregnancy”/“parent” romance novels and this will go down as one of my favourite ones ever! I already know I’ll be coming back to reread Joey and Rosalind’s story many times in the future.
I loved the dynamic between Joey and Rosalind. They have quite different personalities but deep down they are such wonderfully matched characters. Their story had me swooning throughout every chapter.
Joey is such a fun and underestimated guy. You don’t expect how much you end up loving him! I really loved Abel in the last book but I have to say that Joey has now snagged a spot as my new top M. E. Carter main man. 🥰
Rosalind was such a layered and interesting heroine. You see glimpses of her emotional depth and get easily and absolutely hooked on her. Not to mention, her emotional struggles added something special to this story that I thought was extremely well written on M’s part. Long story short, I thought this kickass woman was amazing!
I love all the Smartypants Romance books but this one stood out as one of my top favourites so far. Incredibly well thought out and superbly written, I can only hope that we will get more of M. E. Carter’s phenomenal story telling (in the Smartypants Pennyverse) in the future. An incredibly well deserved 5 star rating from me! If I could give more stars I definitely would 😉😘❤️👌🏻

Nothing makes me happier than a surprise pregnancy and this book definitely did not disappoint. I was drawn into this book from the very first text exchange. Weights of Wrath was a nice touch in the Green Valley universe.
I liked Cherise/Rosalind quite a lot as a strong heroine that did everything in her power to change her life around for a better one after she finds out she's pregnant. With or without Joey's help, she's all in.
I can't say if i liked him too much but i did enjoyed his transformation from a free hot guy to becoming a father.
I rarely enjoy secret pregnancy and while this one wasn't exactly secret, it was an enjoyable story with some dry humor and reliable situations as a mother myself.

The second in this series that has me wondering HOW these books are part of the Smartypants world. Lacks everything I love about a Smartypants book including no wit, good writing, comedic dialog or spice. I’m not sure how these meathead MMCs fit into this lit universe. Smartypants usually demands more from their characters than being nice and handsome.

I was so excited when I learned I had the opportunity to read the book before it was released! My first M.E. Carter book was “Weight Expectations” and I loved it. I couldn’t wait to get more from the characters around the gym.

This story is an entertaining and joyful unconventional love story.

Joey always finds the good in any situation and it was inspiring to read. I wish I viewed life and everything it throws in the same way. Rosalind was kind of the opposite and it was great to watch how their relationship progressed.

I give it 5 stars because you can’t help but smile while reading it.

Joey is always upbeat and positive but the text message he just received it about to change his life.

Rosalind just realized that one-night stand has become so much more. Thank goodness Joey is just the man for the job.

There are a lot of books that make me smile, heck it is one of the reasons I read, I enjoy the stories. But I love it when a book makes me laugh out loud, and this one did in a few spots! And I love that Rosiland and Joey were not perfect under their hotness, proving we all have faults. I love M.E.’s writing and this book was no exception. I was thoroughly and completely entertained.

I always say my favorite thing about ME Carter’s books is that she writes real life, and she writes it very very well. For this book, add in hilariously well too! This book has some major laugh out loud moments that brought me back to all the quirky ins and outs of my first pregnancy. I loved the chemistry between Joey and Rosalind. Their relationship was the perfect yin and yang balance. As always, ME Carter is a top author for me and this wonderful book is further proof of that.

Okay. Joey is ADORABLY clueless. He's also insanely upbeat and positive and he tackles everything with enthusiasm. Sometimes with too much enthusiasm according to the concussion he almost gave Rosalind during their baby-making night together. The point is Joey is sweet and dedicated and he's ridiculously excited to have a baby on the way. (Not in a creepy way. He's like a overeager puppy just brimming with goodwill.)

Rosalind, on the other hand, is not quite as upbeat. In fact, the thought of her impending motherhood scares the pants off her. She's going to do it, sure, but she's still terrified of it. Joey is her touchstone as her pregnancy progresses. He's her rock, but she doesn't want to get too attached because it's the baby he's excited about, right?

As it turns out, Joey might be adorably clueless, but he pays attention to the things that matter. And Rosalind and the baby matter to him. I mean, the guy braves the her loud, boisterous, somewhat terrifyingly huge family because it's important to Rosalind. And he does it well. Mostly.

Family, the horrors of childbirth videos, finding your place when things go sideways, and cute nicknames for Strongman competitors (Heh!). Rosalind and Joey weathered a few storms (like Bugle-dust and burned food) and ended up in their happy place. *thumbs up*

First of all, ME Carter is hilarious! Second, she is one of my favorite authors who has written so many original, funny, romantic, and interesting stores. And after reading this one she has yet to disappoint me. I seem to always fall for her Heroes (Joey, swoon!) and have some sort of connection to the Heroines (Rosalind's pregnancy revelations are spot on). Do yourself a favor and just go ahead and one-click her whole catalog. P.S. That baby shower cake though 🤣🤩
