Dan Slott is an American comic book writer, the current writer on Marvel Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man, and is best known for his work on books such as Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, She-Hulk, Silver Surfer, The Superior Spider-Man, and Ren & Stimpy.
I haven't read any Fantastic Four in many years. Basically since I was a kid. I wanted to give them a shot after years of thinking they were mostly lame.
This book definitely played to the strengths of the franchise. It was mostly lighthearted and had some decent humor. There's also a healthy dose of Dr. Doom which always cranks up the cool factor.
There is a ton of cheese, and I think Franklin Richards is an outright bad character, which is a shame since he's strapped to so much immense power.
All in all not a perfect book, but definitely one that showed me I can fully enjoy Fantastic Four stories.
This is exactly the fun kind of Fantastic 4 adventures that they just haven’t done in the movies. They’re a family, they’re superheroes, the kids are superheroes too, all their superhero friends and regular family members sometimes get mixed up with things and recurring villains often show up. I loved this first OHC volume from beginning to end with no hesitancy with any section of the storytelling.
The first three quarters of the book are pretty great. Highlights include:
- Good stakes-setting in bringing the wild cosmic stuff home for a more human-scale story. - Gail Simone's guest issue is a hoot. - Ben and Alicia's wedding, and Reed's gift, were warm and delightful and hit just the right notes. - The Yancy Street HQ is a fun change of pace.
It meanders a bit near the end, but the kids' driving test was also pretty fun.
This is a good start to a run. Not my absolute favorite thing, some very abrupt panel shifts, some character issues. But the story is overall fun and by the end the writing finds it footing and it is starting to work really well - 3.9 stars
Picking up after the events of Secret Wars this story sees the return of the Fantastic Four to the 616!
What I liked - There’s not much fluff before the FF are back. Starting with Johnny and Ben is good because of their team ups before this trying to find the missing members and having them be the people to great the others was a nice, sentimental touch. Doom’s return is expected but none the less fun.
What I disliked - The FF being the lighthearted side of the Marvel universe often leads to a more cartoony art style and this story is no different. There’s moments that should shock and be somewhat hard to look at but because the art is so bright and stylised it doesn’t shock.
Favourite panel/ moment - Sue using her powers to truly hurt Doom (not physically) was excellent and shows that whilst Sue is the matriarch of this family she still has a darker side.
Classic Fantastic Four story in a modern style. Lots of family value and friendship. Full with science as their leader Reed is a big nerdy scientist. The wedding issue is a bit boring cause i hate wedding and i can't relate. Lol 😂 Love all the art works except for Aaron Kuder. Not a fan of his art. Sara Pichelli & Paco Medina's are definitely my highlight favourite. This is my second F4 book reading after the special mini series of Season One. With the price i paid for a Deluxe Hardcover of 368 pages, I must say i am really satisfied with the action fight, family & friends drama. Their kids Franklin & Valeria are in this too. Love how Ben & Johnny bond with them. You're gonna enjoy it as much as i do if you're a fan of this family superheros team!
I’d read the first issue from this book and was left hanging. I was pleased to find the conclusion in this collection. In fact, the story was wrapped up fairly quickly. I found the other stories a bit disjointed but perhaps that’s because it’s a long time since I read any Fantastic Four. The only odd thing was they started a story involving Norse ice giants etc. but then that thread disappeared and they started a different story… unless I skipped a bundle of pages! …And I don’t remember Reed Richards being that annoying.
The art is consistently great! I have no complaints about any of the artists involved in this volume. As for Slott… I had a hard time reading this consistently. Most of the stories feel a bit generic, and I wasn’t really into them. Ben’s love story and wedding were the best, a really good arc that really brought the character to life. Doom’s arc was just okay, I didn’t feel much about it.
I liked the first nine issues and the special issue for this large trade. But the last two issues with the FF’s kids was just annoying. I hope we get back to doing stories like the first eight for the next volume. We will see
A fun arc detailing the return of the Fantastic Four to the mainline 616 continuity along with the wedding of Thing and Alicia Masters—there is much to enjoy in this book, though I would not deem it essential reading.
