"What is language?" A question Mihalis answers in a way that forces you to open your mind and think: "hmm, it may just be possible that the way I learned (or learning) a language (and almost anything else) might be very counterproductive and unsuitable for me. The book is dedicated "to anyone who has the patience to read it", as Mihalis himself puts it, and with that in mind, I decided to be patient. I discovered a real treasure, and I found in Mihalis a true Teacher, and this is very rare indeed. The Language Transfer Project, of which this book is but a part, is not just about learning a language, it is more about how to think, how to allow our minds to break the constraints imposed on it by years of formal education. I started on Greek and Arabic; Greek because I love Greece (land, history, people) and have always been afraid to even try to learn it, and Egyptian Arabic because I have always thought that this is an impossible language (yes, I am one of those who had no idea that there is more than just one Arabic language - Mihalis explains it so clearly). I am happy to say I was wrong through and through... Greek turns out to be a fascinating language, and Egyptian is almost like mathematics. But, as I said, the book is not as much about languages as it is about thinking. It offers a refreshing perspective on the possibilities of one's mind. I will say no more. May you have the patience to read it and do not hesitate to enter languagetransfer.org website, and even support it. It is all free, free, free.
I hate to write this review because the language transfer concept is just amazing and I am such a fan of the project.
The book though definitely needs a content editor. Glaringly, it becomes autobiographical in places where it needed to be informative. If one were preparing a course for the project using this guide, they'd be wading through a metric tonne of confusion in my opinion.
Respect the heck out of the author and their organization but this guidebook isn't effective per say. Argh I hate to be this harsh :(
