Faith McClellan #4

Nowhere to Hide

Rate this book
A series of brutal pig slaughters brings Faith McClellan to a small town where a ruthless serial killer prepares to butcher their first human victim… When Texas Ranger Faith McClellan is called to investigate a series of gruesome small-town murders, she doesn’t expect to find a slaughtered pig―but she agrees to take the case, suspecting the latest murder was targeted at Kelsey Marie, the teenage handler of the victim. Kelsey Marie is smart, pretty, and successful, supporting her family’s lavish lifestyle with her highly lucrative YouTube channel. She’s also the target of massive online hate, with dozens of threatening messages sent to her channel each day. Although the clues point to an online stalker, Faith suspects a killer much closer to home, and the list of possibilities is from jealous rivals at a local FFA chapter to Kelsey Marie’s suspiciously missing mom and half brother. When the killer carves up their first human victim, Faith knows she’s running out of time―but with little evidence, too many suspects, and a serial killer who outsmarts her at every turn, the odds are stacked up against her. And when the killer uploads the filmed murders to Kelsey Marie’s YouTube channel, Faith will risk everything to save the teenager’s reputation…and her life.

When your Gran's dearest friend asks you to investigate something, you don't ask any questions except where and who.

The who, in this case, is Samson the pig, raised by teenager Kelsey from a runt destined to be culled, a la Charlotte's Web. Samson, as it turns out, is a YouTube star, and Kelsey's videos keep the entire family afloat. A note here: Samson the Pig is said to have 40 million subscribers. That would make it a larger channel that The DoDo - one of the largest channels devoted to animal videos - which has somewhere around 16 million the last time I checked. So that part rang a bit false, but pulling down 200K a month did not, based on the (imaginary) size of the channel, and assuming a gigantic number of views per video.

Texas Ranger Faith McClellan, in her fourth appearance, dutifully goes to talk to the family. Mom and the son, Kyle, are not home -she's told they've gone off to a hunting cabin. The housekeeper, with an accent that comes and goes, Kelsey, and her (a tad strange) father are able to answer some questions, but many remain - who would do this, and what possible motive could there be? Kelsey, of course, is brokenhearted.

McClellan walks around the house and the scene of the crime, finding a rather large secret of the son's rather quickly. She learns that the killing was particularly vicious, with blood everywhere and the killer also decapitated the head (now missing). The carcass she loads up in her truck and takes to the morgue for the coroner to look at. She discovers another hog was also killed, although his head was not taken and the family broke down the body and cooked some of it, the rest going into the freezer.

Meanwhile, McClellen also has to do a bunch of wedding0related stuff: dress, caterers, etc. Her overbearing mother is helping - and by helping, I mean basically taking over all of it. Her fiance Graham is assisting her with the case, which she worries might be the beginnings of a serial killer, and that the killer will move up a bracket to start offing people.

The case seems to have a ton of possible suspects: the brother, a jealous girl from school, the father, the boyfriend/not boyfriend. As McClellen fears, people start dying, even as she and Graham start to get a grip on the case. About halfway through it became obvious to me who the killer was, but it was still an enjoyable ride watching McClellan and Graham make their way through to (livestreaming) denouement.

No terrible slow spots, and in this instance, the bad guy infodump at the end is warranted - it is being livestreamed, after all.

Solid four out of five stars. Plus a desire to go back and read the first three in the series, to see how McClellan came to this version of herself.

Thanks to Severn River and NetGalley for the reading copy.

Texas Ranger Faith McClellan gets a call from her grandma’s best friend, talking about the murder of Samson, and the Sherrif not doing anything. Faith rushes out to find out Samson is a pig, and to appease her grandma’s friend, and to not deal with wedding prep, sets out to investigate this “simple” murder. Well, it is a lot more involved than the murder of a pig, especially when the pig is a YouTube star.
This was my first introduction to Faith McClellan and I am looking forward to many more!
Thank you to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for letting me have a early read in exchange for my opinion.

Get ready to go a few rounds as Faith McClellan’s sidekick as she investigates a crime that takes more than a few odd turns. Really enjoyed this one. Fun to see Faith grow and adapt in each book. Very current life commentary too.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Nowhere to Hide by LynDee Walker is one of the most original police procedurals I've read this year. The story revolves around a murdered pig. Samson the pig is internet-famous, which makes it all the more upsetting when he is murdered and then the murder video is streamed onto the Youtube channel that made him famous. Faith and her fiance Graham investigate by interviewing the owner of the pig and the manager of the Youtube channel, 17 year-old influencer, Kelsey Marie. Who could have murdered Samson? Was it someone trying to get to Kelsey Marie? And what will happen if the killer moves on to murdering people?

Here is a chilling excerpt from Chapter 1:

"Murder is easy.
It's getting away with it that's the harder part. More on that later.
Most people - probably nine out of ten - kill because they feel it's necessary. Self-defense, revenge, greed - they can all push an average person over the line. But in the aftermath, most people regret what they've done. The mark of a true predator is lack of remorse.
Think of it this way: in the animal kingdom, survival of the fittest reigns supreme. Strength and cunning prevails, and life moves on."

Overall, Nowhere to Hide is an unputdownable addition to the genre of serial killer thrillers. I had to keep reading this book to find out who the killer is, and I ended up finishing the book in a day. As mentioned before, one highlight of this book is the original premise. I know that serial killers often start with animals, but it was super interesting to read about how a police officer deals with the investigation of a murdered animal. Another highlight of this book is the main character. Faith is an extremely relatable protagonist. She's supposed to get married to her fiance Graham, who is also a police officer, soon, and it's great that we get to know about her personal life as well. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of police procedurals, you won't regret checking out this book when it comes out in November!

When Faith McClellan receives a call from her granny's best friend, Donette Robbins, reporting two murders and she's locking her doors in a very small town that doesn't see the crime of this nature very often. It's a good enough excuse to pull Faith away from wedding shopping with her domineering mother. But when she arrives at Donette's home, Faith is perplexed because her partner has reported back that there's no news of the murders.

It's here, that Faith learns of the murders of pigs. One of them was Samson, a YouTube star, that was beheaded. Donette turned to Faith because the Sheriff couldn't be bothered to look into the matter.

Faith interviews Jeff Sherman and his daughter Kelsey Marie, who was the owner of Samson. Faith is able to bring the remains of Samson back to Jim, after informing him that it will be a beheaded victim of over 900 pounds and that of a pig!

Faith felt she could have this investigation concluded in a weekend, but when she and her fiance, Graham, decide to pay a visit to Jeff's wife and son, Dustin, at a hunting cabin what they find sends red flags up. After another body is discovered, Faith makes an enemy and a surprising friend. The more Faith uncovers, the more worried she becomes for Kelsey Marie as a target, and she's racing the clock to find a sadistic killer.

This was a fantastic read! The first chapter had me wondering who would make such commentary. There were so many twists that left me reeling about who the killer was, just as I thought I had a guess, then there was another curveball. I was utterly shocked by the ending because I did not see that coming.

I received a complimentary copy and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

Thrillers are not my usual reading choice but there some authors, I just can't resist and LynDee Walker is one of them. The tension ramps up slowly at first but long before I finished reading it, I had to put the book down every few chapters just to breathe. Ms. Walker is kind enough to balance the worst of the intensity with alternate action and such interesting characters that I can't keep from jumping right backing into the amazing world that she creates. Twists and turns pile up as the murder seems to get closer and every track that Faith follows dead ends.
If you have read the description of the book, you know that the suspicious deaths that she is called on to investigate are in fact pet pigs but like all lawmen, Faith immediately reflects on the fact that murderers, especially serial killers, usually start with animals. While she expects teasing about investigating the death of a pig on a pig farm, the ranger with a perfect record takes the situation seriously even before the first human body lands in her lap. The LEO with a perfect solve record is determine that the 4-H president, YouTube star will not be a victim any more than she already is.
My thanks to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for allowing me to read and share my enjoyment of the 4th outstanding book in Faith McClellan series, Nowhere to Hide.

Nowhere to Hide, by Lyndee Walker, is the 4th in the Faith McClellan Mystery series. This thrilling series is more intense with every installment and the characters are so easy to connect with, Texas Ranger Faith McClellan in particular. While struggling to rein her forceful mother in when it comes to the wedding plans, Faith is called to investigate a killing in a sparsely populated neighboring county. Wedding gown shopping will have to wait! As in the blurb, the trouble begins with a slaughtered pig --- but escalates quickly. I enjoy the quick pace and plausible plot lines; I know I will be compelled to read until I finish. The personal relationships in Faith's life are changing and growing with each book and it is good to see she and her mother making an effort to repair their relationship. An all around great read.

A gritty mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end! Texas Ranger Faith McClellan is contacted by her grandmother’s friend who reports two murders in McCulloch County. She arrives to find that it was hogs that were slain, yes hogs. The slayings were savage and there is concern that the killer may next target humans. Faith agrees to investigate and that is only the beginning of the twists and turns that she faces. Faith is planning her wedding to Commander Graham Hardin of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office. Well, her mother is planning and Faith is trying to do as little as possible and keep the peace. With a mother and son missing, a young teen devastated at the murder of the hog she raised and the possibility of more murders, Faith has her hands full. When the case turns serious and deadly, will the killer come after her? I so enjoy Faith’s character…her strength, humor, and her compassion for the victims. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Faith McClellan is back in an action filled murder mystery that will keep you reading until the very last page. Ms. Walker uses elements from current social media influencer experiences to build this story that starts out as an investigation of a murdered YouTube star, Sampson the hog. While it starts form Sampson’s demise, this story escalates into a first-rate murder mystery. Along with the murder investigation, several elements of Faith’s personal life are included which make for a very enjoyable story, not to mention some situations add an element of humor. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.

This newest book in the Faith McClellan series had me enthralled and on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Faith, Graham, and Archie are very likable characters, and Faith’s mom is complicated, but slowly evolving into becoming tolerable. Who knows? Archie may rub off on her enough for her to become likable in future books. Ms. Walker is a talented author, and I look forward to seeing more of Faith soon. The only thing keeping me from giving 5 ⭐️ is the bad language, which takes away some of the reading enjoyment for me. I received a copy of this book from SRP Mystery and Thriller Books, and have given my voluntary and honest opinion.

Nowhere to Hide is a phenomenal book it has everything you could want in a thriller and this not only had me on the edge of my seat. I legit think I had a nightmare about it lol 😂

I read a great deal of horror and one does not wish to have a nightmare. However, I’m taking it as a hallmark for how incredibly vivid and detailed the storyline is. You feel like you are physically there when the murders occur and trust me it is gruesome. I just loved Faith and her unwavering determination to solve the crime and catch her perpetrators. Her instincts are on point believable and well written. Highly recommended this book and will most definitely be reading more from this author.

Faith is a DPS ranger finally found the perfect wedding gown.
A call from Mrs Robbie the good memories with her sister out there
Dusty little town, 2 killings have happened she said.
Then it soon escalated into more bodies, a serial killer.
Faith and Graham trying to figure out this game of cat and mouse.
Dead ends, suspicious death, plenty of twists to the end.
Nice personal touch of plans for a simple wedding, Faith hopes.

This riveting book opens with Texas Ranger Faith McClellan responding to an old neighbor’s worry about mutilated swine. The killer soon ups their game to include humans. It’s a race against time to find the villain before the violence continues. This powerful story is extremely well written with a complex plot, non-stop action, and well developed characters. Extremely readable and highly recommended! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.

This is such a good series! Each new installment is better than the last!
When an old family friend calls Faith about two murders, she never would have imagined that she’d be investigating the death of pigs! Things only get stranger and more complicated from there as the list of suspects grows and the killer moves on to human prey. Videos posted online paint a horrifying picture of a twisted, sadistic killer who isn’t done yet. The storyline is action packed and full of twists that keep you riveted to the unexpected shocking conclusion!

Twisted killer

Faith's mother is making preparations for her upcoming wedding. In the midst of all this, Faith gets a message from her grandmother's old friend to investigate the brutal slaughter of a prize pig, belonging to a teenager, Kelsey Marie. Why is this being done? Is it jealousy because the prize pig is an internet sensation? Faith discovers that there is something sinister happening when Kelsey Marie's family members are missing. This book is a page turner with a surprising twist at the end.

I have loved all of the Faith McClellan books in this series, but LynDee Walker has really outdone herself on this one. The book opens with the gruesome murder of Samson, a large pet hog who has his own YouTube channel with thousands of followers earning hundreds of thousands of dollars for the adolescent girl who owns him and her family. And from there the body count continues to mount and the suspect list constantly changes. And while Faith is coping with the case, she is also hip deep in plans for her wedding while trying to cope with her overbearing mother. Such fun. The ending is surprising yet completes the story creatively.

who knew a pig’s murder could be captivating…

Faith responds to the strangest calks but this one is, by far, the strangest. A longtime friend of her grandmother calls and asks for help solving two murders…apparently two prized pigs have been horrifically murdered. Surely this isn’t a case for a Texas Ranger. Until Faith starts investigating and discovers that all isn’t right in famous pigland. What starts as humoring and old lady becomes an investigation into a homicide. Interspersed in this story is Faith’s wedding planning. Another good story in the series.

I really enjoyed this and am happy to have a new series to read! This is the first book I've read by LynDee Walker and I'm looking forward to reading more.

While Nowhere to Hide is the fourth book in the series, I was able to jump right in and thoroughly enjoy the story. Yes, you'll be missing some relationship and character development from the first three books, but it is still a very enjoyable read.

Chilling!!

Texas Ranger Faith McClellan has never had a case quite like this one. The victim isn’t even human but the extreme violence of the murder and the impact it had on a teenage girl and the residents of the small Texas town make Faith determined to find the killer.

This is another page-turner in The Faith McClellan series. I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary. Lyndee Walker really delivered on this one!

I enjoyed this mystery thriller. Faith McClellan is called in by her Grandma's friend to solve a murder. The murder victim was a pig named Samson. At first I thought this was a comedy, but I soon realized that it wasn't so. This action filled story kept me engaged and the realistic characters had me captivated. I would recommend this book. I've only read one other book in this series so far. There was no problem following along because the story is pretty self contained with brief mentions/exchanges with four other series characters.

Despite a limited number of suspects, there are a ton of surprises which keeps one guessing.

Despite a small amount of personal stuff, the focus is the mystery. I really enjoyed this book which I received from SRP in exchange for an honest review.

Everything in the house revolves around the pig who is a media star, then the pig turns up dead, mon and brother disappear, the maid gets murdered, and the crimes keep on pilling up. Who is the culprit? All leads seem to reach a dead end. Nowhere to hide has a good plot, written with humor and a bit of romance, providing good entertainment.

Faith is back and getting married to Graham. She's rebuilding her relationship with her mother. Her grandmother's friend calls her to get help discovering who is murdering pigs. The pig that has everyone riled up is an internet-famous pig. There are lots of questions surrounding the family that owned the pig.

I had the killer figured out pretty quickly. The stories seem to be following a specific pattern or maybe I just need a break from the stories.

Outstanding book! Love the series. Faith McClellan is a BA Texas Ranger who is helping her Grandmother’s best friend out in a west Texas small town. Miss Dottie calls to ask Faith to help with 2 murders in the small town since the sheriff isn’t paying them any attention. It is nonstop action that you cannot put down. Don’t miss it… but get ready to read through the night.

Texas Ranger Faith McClellan is asked to look into a murder. When she arrives, she finds out it is a pig that was killed. Another pig gets killed and then a murder of a person. An internet video of the killings and then the dark web lead to a lot of money. There are a number of suspects that lead you in different directions. A killer and an ending I did not expect.

This case started out a little odd. Faith was called by an old family friend to help investigate two murders. Of pigs. But what started out as pig deaths turned into much more. The more Faith searched, the more clues she found, but this also increased the number of unanswered questions.
A read that captured my attention from the start. A great addition to the series.
