Meet Nelson . . . he's an ordinary kid, just like you. Everyone thinks he's shy but, really, he's just bored.
Nelson hates vegetables. He hates the smell of them, he hates the look of them. Most of all, he hates eating them.
But what if they gave him superpowers? Superpowers he needs when an alien race he made up in class yesterday swoops into town and holds his school hostage, threatening to eat his teacher . . .
Okay, I'll confess straight up. I read this because I listen to Levin's podcast 'Hey Fam' and wanted to support the guy.
I'm happy to report that despite it being a tad below my reading level, it was an enjoyable short read. The characters are all very well realised, the story is very engaging (being the perfect length for what it is), and of course, the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. The use of having one shade of orange throughout was a really nice choice, and when it was used, it always really popped.
The only criticism I really have, is with its finale. Nelson beats the villain by explaining him the importance of telling the truth; but we never actually hear Nelson's report on why we should actually tell the truth. I just thought that it was a little odd of an omission in this case, on behalf of it being a kids book.
Overall, I would have adored this if I was a little younger. If you've got kids between 6-10 I would very much recommend; or if you're looking at reading it for the purpose of supporting Levins, you'll be sure to enjoy the tight narrative, fun characters and incredible illustrations.
