The cousin that Jing Huan has been closest to since he was a child was labelled as “the other woman” in a certain popular online game: only after devoting herself did she know that the other party was a jerk with a girlfriend.
After several days of being bullied online by people in the game, his cousin went abroad in a fit of anger and sorrow.
Jing Huan couldn’t take this lying down; he decided to take revenge for his cousin using the same method as that guy — buy a character in game and kill that slag guy thousands of times online.
With his strength and skill as the Great God when the game was first launched, wouldn’t he be able to kill that guy and force him to quit the server in minutes?!
He went online, eager to fight, but made a discovery after conducting a round of investigations — this slag guy was the number one DPS server-wide, number one on the expert ranking list, number one on the wealth ranking list, number one on the popularity ranking list, and number one on the fame ranking list.
Conclusion: can’t screw him over.
Jing Huan felt despondent. He was just about to give up when he personally witnessed his dormmate’s online relationship end right after meeting each other in real life. The other party had sent fake photos and changed their voice, and had even cheated him of his money, triggering his dormmate so much that he was almost admitted to a hospital.
Jing Huan felt enlightened as a sudden realisation dawned on him. After comforting his roommate, he moved the high-priced voice changer back to his rented house overnight.
In the most simplest words, this is a very fluffy-cutesy tooth achingly sweet drama. There is little to none angst and at the end you'd think, is real life this sweet? In a previous review of mine for another book of the same author, I have mentioned that particular books flows out like a web-drama, all cute and no angst. The same can be said to this. It is sweetness wrapped up in a preety bow.
If it is a realistic novel you are looking for, this is not it. If it's just a novel that can help you take your mind off of things and make you laugh out loud, then yes. The characters are straight forward, even the side characters and you might get a sort of Love O2O feeling whilst reading this. Everything ultimately flows perfectly, too perfectly at times. But as I mentioned before, this is for a read for a feel good time and not for serious reading.
There is not much that I would complain. The book gives a summary of a sweet college romance and that is what it delivers. A sweet college romance, a look back at our own time then. Will I read the other novels by the same author? Most probably yes. This made me laugh and very much needed that during this time.
Official English Publisher: Hai Tang Books Length: 117 chapters + 3 extras (4 books planned) Third Person POV
Jing Huan’s (MC) cousin is tricked into a relationship in an online game by a character called ‘Yeaning For.’ She is then cyber-bullied. He then decides to enact revenge on her behalf and pose as a female character called ‘Xiao Tianjing’ to then trick ‘Yearning For’ into falling in love with him. But we, the audience know that the account was hacked and it wasn’t Xiang Huaizhi our lovely ML that was being deceptive.
Cons: -Pacing: the beginning felt slow and there was a lot of filler in the middle. -Miscommunication trope -No spice in the romance, it’s all sugar and everything apart from them kissing happens off page.
Also, the saddest chapter is called ‘Merry Christmas’ so just brace yourself. It caught me off guard.
For me this was a fun but ultimately forgettable story.
Disclaimer: I’m not a gamer. I think if you’ll are then you’ll definitely get more out of this. I’ve never read this sub-genre of danmei before and just don’t think it’s for me so take this review with a big pinch of salt.
jiang zi bei can literally publish incoherent gibberish and i will still eat it up every time
ghfod was a very surprising delight that caught me off guard because in the beginning i wasn’t super invested in the romance and now i’m over here genuinely wanting to reread it even though i finished only twenty minutes ago because i miss jing huan & xiang huaizhi so much.
ghfod has all my favorite tropes rolled into it—gaming (i literally only play animal crossing), outrageous & silly misunderstandings, shameless MCs (jing huan gave me terrible second hand embarrassment every chapter…i love him), hidden identity, doting MLs, and slow burn that is so slow it almost becomes annoying 🤌
so many ppl told me that ghfod is a comfort danmei for them & i definitely can see that because i never went one chapter without feeling all warm & fuzzy inside
please go read ghfod if you haven’t yet!!!! it’s soooo good <3
4.5 ⭐️ Omg, I had so much fun reading this novel! Overall, it was entertaining, with a cute plot and adorable characters, making it an absolute joy to read. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a light, fluffy read.
JingHuan and his Catfishing 101 masterclass. This webnovel is an absolute delight, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
I was initially hesitant to dive in, as I'm not well-versed in gaming, but my fears of not understanding the story quickly dissipated. The book does a really good job of making everything accessible, I could picture with ease the gameplays, the forums, the characters, and so on.
The contrast between the main couple's online and real-life interactions was so amusing. Online, they're a comedic duo, while in person, they're absolutely adorable. Their relationship unfolds naturally, and their chemistry is simply… The way they talk to each other had me giggling.
JingHuan is a character I wholeheartedly adore. He's playful yet remarkably sincere (even if he does engage in a little online catfishing, but-). Even in the moments of mild angst, he faces the consequences of his actions without denying his true feelings. I love him.
The amount of secondhand embarrassment that I got tho… I was screaming not-so-internally on a ton of scenes, so beware.
I loved Jing Huan’s as our MC in Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating. Watching his ridiculous attempts at wooing Xiang Huaizhi (ML) in his in game fox fairy persona was just too funny. I laughed a lot about the many weird things he did and how he slowly made progress. The in game chats and We Chat conversations were a joy to read (as they are in every Jiang Zi Bei book).
Xiang Huaizhi was actually a super sweet guy and I was cheering him on a lot. His dry sense of humour only added to his charm.
Of course things were unrealistic at times but that didn’t diminish my experience in any way. As a reader you just don’t have to take it all too seriously and just enjoy the flow of the story. The fan translation was pretty good and I highly appreciated the cultural references, especially those to every day life in China.
This was my third Jiang Zi Bei novel and I loved it. This author’s sense of humour is great fun.
1. laughing so hard i had uncontrollable giggle/coughing fits 2. cooing and blushing cos the couple's interactions were so sweet 3. second hand embarrassment, altho that decreased exponentially as the book progressed
This webnovel was really cute and had a fresh feeling to it ! I really liked the side characters, and even though it could've gone further, I like that the author didn't make it longer than it needed to be. I thought the ending was cute and wrapped up the general story well. I'm not really into gaming, and there were some parts that were a bit heavy on it, but it was made understandable and my lack of knowledge didn't really affect my reading experience. While it was enjoyable, it was nothing special, but I'd still recommend reading it !
OK, I see why this book gets all the hype. Written by the same author as 我行让我来, I would say that you can roughly expect similar things. This story is a very VERY cute first-love slash university romance between two gamers. It's a feel-good, romcom and fluffy story. I did however feel that the story was longer than it needed to be because there was a long lull period in the middle with nothing much happening. But still pretty enjoyable!
Super fluffy! I wasn't sure about starting this one at first because I didn't think I'd be a fan of the catfishing plot, but somehow it ended up being okay. I laughed, giggled, and ended up loving the characters. Some second-hand embarrassment, but there were only 2 chapters that had me speed-reading through to get through the pain of embarrassment.
I enjoyed reading this book very much! I wish the story was even longer, I miss the main characters and their friends already. I'll definitely re-read it soon ❤️
i can't believe i managed to read a 1500+ pages book in three and a half day but it was just so good !!! i couldn't stop reading !!! i laughed so much and i cried at the bit of the angst that we got too huanhuan and huaizhi are just so 🤍🤍🤍
Another web novel is finished. I will focus on my ARCs after this.✌
This is a light contemporary web novel romance featuring Jing Huan (MC) and Xiang Huaizhi (ML). This one is new adult as our main couple are already on their twenties.
A very cute, fluffy and a little bit funny story. This started when Jing Huan's sister was bullied in an online game and was forced to leave the country out of shame. Jing Huan being a caring brother wanted to take revenge. He was a skilled player and was planning to kill the guy responsible for what happened repeatedly until he leave the game too. Unfortunately, the player is an OP ranker in the server.
Left with no choice, Jing Huan got an idea of scamming the guy by pretending to be a girl and tricking him of his money and feelings.
That's the premise which is kind of long.😅
I enjoyed reading this one as it was just a feel good story. It is a bit of a slice of life theme as there wasn't that much of a plot. I also love the game elements on it though it wasn't the focus of the story. The characters are a bit one dimensional but at least there weren't that many 'villains'.
The main couple's romance was a bit too fast imo. It was cute and funny though.😄
Funny, fluff, sweet, cute... Though it's a bit lengthy at the beginning but I think it's necessary to build the chemistry and introduce the game system. Both MC and ML are adorable and likeable, love them.
funny and cute! not usually a fan of online gaming, but something about this web novel is so addicting, every time I was not reading, my mind kept going back to this.
4.75 / 5:But knowing that he was Xiang Huaizhi's first love, he still felt happy. Nothing else, just simply happy.
this was such a chaotic story about the headaches that are the world of gaming and just internet culture, in general. it really felt like a true reflection of what it’s like to be on the internet 24/7–as someone who also spends a lot of time on the web 😅. i loved how descriptive this translation was in the worldbuilding as these characters fought each other in battles & even had their little slice of life moments with their avatars.
the chaos that was seeing these same characters interact with each other in servers and play very dirty was wayyy too realistic (there was even a part where the main bully mentioned that what happens online is free for the taking, and if she can’t control her life on the outside, then she might as well do what she pleases in the gaming community, which was…..very yikes….); but jing huan’s way of throwing them off really helped lighten the load. his alter ego has such a cutesy personality but is very spiteful in many ways, i loved it.
i think what made this story feel even more enjoyable is that we got to see what some of these characters’ lives were like offline. it made jing huan & xiang huaizhi’s relationship development feel extra special (suchhhh a slow-burn—it was honestly impressive). their friends also carried a really important weight in the story with all their banter and contribution to bringing these two together more than they even realized. i really loved lu wenhao, especially, for very stupid reasons in that he’s such a comedic character who had the misfortune of being catfished twice. i would’ve loved to see how his adventures in online dating continued to shape up, but thats something maybe better found somewhere on ao3, perhaps.
overall!! this was the first danmei i read that unfortunately almost veered to the point where it was too long—the secret identity trope was fun for a good chunk of the time but around 70% of the way through, i did get a little tired of it. thankfully, that was around the same time when we hit the angst—which was very short, but helped boost the story in my eyes so that i can understand why it still needed a little more room to write.
i love this author’s writing style; this is only my second time reading from them but i can already tell what their staple dynamic is like between their main couples—you have jing huan & jian rong, who have very fierce personalities in both personal & online relationships, but when it comes to their love interests, they’re like a pile of warm goo. it’s honestly damning as hell, i love it.
xiang huaizhi & lu boyuan are much more quiet in temperament, but with an overwhelming aura as they have large fanbases for not just their mysterious personas but also spectacular gameplays. the way they dote on their mcs are very sweet, and one of the highlights of jiang zi bei’s storytelling.
i would love to read more of it, and thankfully, there is another title ready to be read in the near future, so im excited!!
content warnings:
major:descriptions of violence (in the video game), and cyberbullying moderate:death (also in video game), and sexual content
Hold your horses!! Apart from historical Danmei, I think have found my calling, am literally in love with gaming Danmei now, so far there is game there I wanna read. This is the second gaming/e-sport book am reading from this same author, and yeah, the first was amazing, but this one???? It took me to new heights, and I find these authors spectacular rn! I literally wanna read all their books!!
This was the most wholesome read ever, not one chapter was boring, not one interaction was boring. Both the in-game and outside interaction between the ml and mc is top-notch, their in-game interaction was amazing and funny, while their real life interaction was full of maturity and love and everything. It's not like liking the in-game character and then falling in love with the in-game character, no it's liking the in-game character in its own way, and liking the owner outside in the real world in its own way, makes me happy!.
Was it only me or do we all wanted a real life meeting of all the guild members that were shown frequently???🥹😭 I so badly wanted to see Love is for you to eat(Chichi) I wanted to see my hg so badly, and the part where she mentioned Danmei??? DAMN! I loved Chichi more hahaha omds. My fellow Fujoshi😭🤭~~
But yeah, this is an amazing read, I'd like to read this for the first time again, everyone's in-game interaction was funny and amusing!!!! They were all funny and all! And I don't remember the dude that love gossip username! They were the best hahaha!
Don’t know how I found my way back to online gaming danmeis but here I am. I know nothing about video games, and yet Jiang Zi Bei makes these plot lines and characters so satisfying every time. I already read their other novel “I Can Do It”, and that one was also fantastic. I like how the author is able to dabble in the same topics but come out with very different characters and different results. Still, the trolling element is present in both. I think Jiang Zi Bei might have a soft spot for trolls.
Jing Huan is very entertaining, and he’s very forward with his affection (once he figures it out), and Xiang Huaizhi complements him very well by matching his energy (even if it seems a little colder or a little more toned down). They’re a good matchup, and even when they got together, I wasn’t bored at all. The story held up in a way that many other romances don’t when the main pairing finally gets there.
"Fine, dislike me now, but there'll come a day when you'll love me 'till you go mad."
the good part is that this is such a cute, adorable, sweet, amazing story that i couldn't stop reading it from the moment i first started. the bad part is that I READ IT TOO FAST AND NOW IT'S OVER i love jing huan so much he's my baby my beloved my everything. i also love xiang huaizhi so much. i love everyone here so much. this is an adorable novel that made me chuckle and shriek multiple times. light-hearted and great for my mood. i love it i love it i love it
Feeling all mushy rn this was so adorable wtf. There was barely any angst. It was just all cuteness and wholesomeness. Gonna go read more books by the author.
This book also had me smiling the whole time cause of the cuteness omg. Whole book was in a way just dog food for single people.
Edit: reread it and I miss it already. I love this book so much. Every little interaction is so fun to read.
First of all, I didn’t expect this to be on the same universe as PUBG Online Romance of the Century and I Can Do It. 200% second hand embarrassment! The funniest of the three novels written by the author that I’ve read so far. I couldn’t helped laughing out loud several times!
I didn't have much expectations going into this novel but was pleasantly surprised. Finished it in a day or so, and even stayed up until 4:30 am reading.
I've realized I really like this type of genre, where the main characters meet and get married within a game, and then the offline romance develops later. Just One Smile was Very Alluring was my first foray into this genre, and this book was my second, and I've found myself really enjoying both.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
There's a twist in this case - the main character Jing Huan (or Huanhuan as his friends call him) starts playing Nine Chivalrous Heroes (NCH for short) again to get revenge for his older cousin, who was tricked by a slag account called Yearning For that was known to have tricked multiple women. Huanhuan joins the game as a cute female fox, gets a voice changer, and tries to act all cutesy to get close to Yearning For so he can leave him when it hurts the most. Little did he know that he's targeting the wrong guy, since Yearning For paid someone else to maintain his account while he was recovering from a physical injury and couldn't play himself, and it was the other guy who was sleazily dating multiple women.
It was hilarious to read how Huanhuan chats in what he thinks in a cutesy feminine manner and say things shamelessly. And of course, this is only directed towards Yearning For since that's the only person he cares about. He changes his tone when talking to everyone else XP
The other main character, Xiang Huaizhi / Yearning For, is your typical stoic male lead, though he's surprisingly cute in how he chases after Huanhuan IRL. I loved the hand warming scenes and how he always affectionately pats Huanhuan's head when he can't do anything else to show his affection.
I enjoyed the whole story, and though I had some doubts about how Xiang Huaizhi would react after he found out the truth, and that part of the story did cause me the most stress. When he suggested the in game divorce I was just as devastated as Huanhuan. Luckily it was only drawn out across a couple chapters and Huanhuan did a good job of chasing after him and properly confessing this time. It took Huaizhi some time to come around it, but soon the fluff was back!
I usually don't care about the side characters, but I liked the whole crew in this novel. Both Huanhuan and Xiang Huaizhi's friends / roommates were hilariously clueless about their relationship until the very end, and Huanhuan's friends didn't even know he was playing NCH for most of the book. They kept on asking him to join them in playing or at least help out for some events with a side account, and even after the servers merged and their two guilds were involved in a long drawn out war, they still didn't notice anything. And poor Lu Wenhao for having such bad luck with his online wives XP
There are so many scenes (most of them hilarious) I loved throughout the novel. I've listed some of them here:
-Huanhuan panicking and changing his whole Wechat account to look more girly, including adding a pink profile pic, and then getting called out for it by his friends
-The moment when Huanhuan realized who Yearning For and All the Road are in the bathroom and very deliberately drops his phone and steps on it so Lu Hang can't add him on Wechat.
-On a related note, Huanhuan realizing he accidentally added Yearning For's Wechat and Xiang Huaizhi's side Wechat account to his Wechat account (I sweatdropped majorly on his behalf here)
-Huanhuan announcing to his friends that his hand warming services are no longer available when one of them tries to stick their hands into his jacket pocket
-Both Huanhuan and Xiang Huaizhi independently posting pics of the sports field on their Wechat Moments after their "couple experience" there
-When Huanhuan accidentally spoke on Yearning For's livestream with his real voice instead of using the voice changer and outed himself as a male. Followed by when Yearning For told Huanhuan the mic was muted and it wasn't actually, so everyone got to hear Huanhuan act all cutesy
-People watching the NCH event livestream going crazy over Huanhuan and Xiang Huaizhi holding hands in the audience, and then again when they're randomly selected to go on stage and participate in a 2v2
Here are some specific moments that I particularly enjoyed:
Jing Huan began to think about what he had done in the past few months.
It was just pursuing Xiang Huaizhi with great fanfare for several months.
It was just calling out Gege several hundred times.
It was just “cheating” him out of several pieces of equipment and “a few” in-game gold coins.
… It was just sending him a picture of his thighs.
……. And calling him husband, just once.
…………… And forcing Xiang Huaizhi to call him “baby”.
?
Holy shit?
Was he crazy back then, why did he coax a man to call him baby?
Jing Huan was deeply shocked by his shameless self in the past few months.
He wasn’t sure if it was because he had been soaking for a long time or because he was so angry at himself, but for a moment, Jing Huan felt like he was going to faint in the bathtub.
He quickly gathered his thoughts together, left the bathtub, and went back to bed to continue his self-examination.
Half an hour later, when he had finished with his self-reflection, what he thought wasn’t, “How can I explain all this to Ge so that he’s willing to forgive me”, but was now, “How can I beg for mercy just to preserve my pitiful life”.
-----------------------------
Lu Wenhao: I, Lu Wenhao, am going to start discriminating from today! Anyone with a cutesy voice in the game is either a catfish or an old auntie!
Lu Wenhao: [picture] Like this one.
Seeing the avatar in the picture, Jing Huan’s smile froze.
In the picture was an afking Xiao Tianjing in Fairyland..
Lu Wenhao: Oh, maybe you don’t recognize them, they’re the one who sang “Loyalty to the Country” before, the one I had you listen to.
Xiao Jing ya: ?
Xiao Jing ya: Her voice doesn’t count as cutesy ba?
Lu Wenhao: Types cutesy, and likes to send emoticons. You’ve never seen her talking with her husband… Drop dead cloying.
Lu Wenhao: My two eyes can definitely see through the facade. I’m telling you guys that there’s a 99% chance that Xiao Tianjing is male! The more I think about it now, the more I’m sure that the voice sounds like it’s been voice-changed! Blind guess, it’s a 34-year-old middle-aged uncle!
Very cute no-drama rom-com e-sports danmei. Not in the mood for angst or crazy plot? This is your novel. It was really easy to read, the plot was very straight forward and predictable, but I enjoyed it a lot because of the comedy (Huanhuan - our MC, is really funny).
Features two very rich university boys, interested in basketball and gaming, in their plot of falling in love (ensuing lots of comedy in the misunderstanding of their relationship - considering it starts with Jing Huan purposely cat fishing Xiang Huaizhi).
If you’re looking for something with more depth/something different though, this might not be a good read because the plot and characters are very simple. I rated this pretty high just because I enjoyed the brain-dead tooth rotting romance/comedy of this novel. But I do recommend this if you’re just looking for an easy read and just want to eat dog food lol.
3.5? rounding up to 4... unfortunately bc ive particular shelf criteria 4 books.
this was fine, i skimmed a bit. but eh, turns out the author peaked with 'i can do it' 4 me. reading novels prior to that one by the same author was a mistake but alright. it was a light quick read, cute sweet fun quirky etc etc all synonyms applied.
this had some distasteful stuff that made me go side-eye a lot more than that novel, but hm ok. still better than the pubg novel, that was a straight up no for me. read that pubg novel enuf to appreciate the smol cameo of yanxyan but. yeah thats pretty much it.
not much 2 say abt this novel :( bc it doesn't have much worth reviewing for. it's just a quick, cute and a fun romance read.
