Rate this book
Never get into a bidding war with a demon. Winning could be murder.

One phone call from her mother, and Selena Marx’s relatively quiet summer ends with the clang of alarm bells in her head. Mom and her husband are coming to Globe…and not just to meet Selena’s boyfriend of two months, Calvin Standingbear. They’ve also dipped a toe into the local real estate market.

By buying the most haunted Victorian mansion in town. Sight unseen.

Resigned that there’s no talking them out of their vacation rental dreams, Selena checks the place out for herself. Oddly, she senses nothing. But there’s no mistaking the unholy racket of bangs, wails, and evil laughter blasting through the walls. Something is infesting this house, and it’s not your garden-variety ghost.

This time, her arsenal of moon water, coffin nails, and rock salt isn’t going to cut it. Selena needs backup, but when it arrives, the house strikes back — hard and deadly. Now her parents are murder suspects. If Selena can’t find the true culprit, she could be the haunted mansion’s next victim.

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.

While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.

After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.

"Household Demons" is another great installment in the Hedgewitch for Hire series. This time Selena receives a call from her mother with a surprise message. She and her husband have purchased the Bigelow Mansion in Globe as investment property and they are coming in a few days for a visit. Oh boy! First, Selena is shocked and then she questions whether or not her mother knows that the house is haunted. Of course, her mother doesn't believe in all of that nonsense but Selena wants to check out the house for herself before they arrive.

With the aid of her trusty real estate friend, Josie, they enter the house. Nothing seems out of the ordinary so Selena goes on her merry way. When her mother arrives, Selena finally gets to show her the shop and her float above. She also introduces her mother to her boy toy, Calvin. Then, the first night in the mansion, her parents experience a noisy phenomenon that requires some expert advice. So, Selena goes to a friend and hires a medium, Brandt Thoreau out of Sedona, AZ to come and check out the paranormal disturbance.

Brandt wants time alone in the house and he is given it when Selena, Calvin and her parents go out to dinner at the casino. When Selena's mother calls her early in the morning it is not to say that she had a wonderful time at dinner: but, to inform her that they found Brandt dead at the bottom of the stairs. Here we go again! Another unnatural death connected somehow to Selena. What on Earth is going on and who is behind it? well, that is what we have grown to trust Selena to find out.

There is plenty of action and subterfuge in this little gem but I have to say that I really hate the way the author glossed over the first intimate moment between Selena and Calvin. Even if she wanted to leave out the sex she could have at least added an Oh baby! Very disappointing! However, I will be going on to the next book in the series with the understanding that romance is not this author's forte.

Book three and once again Selena finds herself in trouble. It’s a fantastic well written story full of magic, mystery, suspense, family and a slow burn romance and be warned once you pick this up you will not be able to put this down. A haunted house, parents visiting , murder and a demon and you have one hell of an exciting story and a fantastic addition to this incredible series!

Household Demons is the third in the Hedgewitch for Hire series. Serena lives in Globe, AZ, a small town where she owns and runs a ‘woo-woo’ store, having fled LA after getting on the wrong side of the local head warlock. In the first two books, she has made quite the name for herself in witch circles by solving magical crimes.

Household Demons explores the often complex relationships we have with our family, especially if, as adults, we have not been geographically close, but are suddenly thrown together, as here. Serena’s mother and step-father buy an old Victorian mansion in Globe, which is said to be haunted, and she is thrown in at the deep end when she suspects that it is not ghosts, but demons who go bump in the night. It seems that she faces something outside her experience and skill set - but is all as it seems?

I am really enjoying the ways in which the characters in the series are building up their ‘onion layers’, and the development of the relationships. Serena is slowly putting together a knowledge of the cursed cat she lives with, who is still snooty and attitudinal, and desperate to return to his human form. I am looking forward to this aspect of the storyline coming together - perhaps it will be a book in its own right? That would be fun, the interactions between the two of them are often snarky and it would be interesting to see how he transitions back into life as a human in the modern world. Serena’s relationship with Calvin is also developing, but there’s trouble on the horizon, as his people almost never settle with anyone from outside their clan. How can they overcome such an obstacle?

Serena and Calvin plan a getaway to Jerome, so I’m wondering if they may encounter McAllister witches…although the two ‘worlds’ don’t seem to follow the same rules, so probably not. Still, an interesting proposition.

But I digress. As usual, Christine Pope does a fine job of telling a good story, and this series is of her usual high standard. I’m following it as part of her ARC team and enjoying the privilege of getting these gems early!

Selena Marx is a beautiful, headstrong, polite and a reserved Hedgewitch that live in a small town called Globe, in Arizona. She enjoys life in Globe; she runs a woo-woo shop and loves spending time with her boyfriend, coyote-shifter, Calvin Standingbear and of course, her friendship with Josie Woodrow. And despite his quirks, loves her cat, Archie, as well. Selena looks forward to her summer in Globe, and that’s about to change...
Selena soon gets a call from her mother and a surprise! Her mother and stepfather is coming to visit her!
They also happen to have bought a mansion in town, and it’s haunted!
Despite the house being haunted, Selena senses nothing. And yet, there’s no denying the supernatural activity in the house. What could it possibly be? Ghosts? Demons? When tradegy strikes, Selena’s parents are suspects. Selena believes they did nothing wrong and sets out to prove it. Who is behind the paranormal activity? And why? The truth is out there, and Selena soon realises everything and everyone is not as they seem. The culprit is closer than you think... Will she become the haunted house’s next victim?

Pope delivers a beautiful tale that you have to read! It’s suspenseful and have enough romance to keep you hooked. Fans of Pope will definitely enjoy this book. A wonderful addition to the Hedgewitch for hire series. New readers of Pope will find themselves loving the paranormal romance cozy mystery as well. Prepare to be sucked in until the last page!

Serena loves living in Globe, AZ. Her small shop, her "familiar" and her possible romance with Calvin are all keeping her busy. But now the parental units want to come for a visit! Even worse, they are BUYING a house in town - sight unseen. And this is no small pied-a-terre, nope it's a full-on mansion.

Poor Serena. Her mum doesn't want to acknowledge all the "woo-woo" in her life until she has no recourse but to admit that there is something wrong with her new house and drafts in Serna to find out what. Oh, another dead body is just what Serena needs to cement her new reputation as detective (or trouble magnet depending on who you ask")

There are lots of layers to this series. I'm enjoying the slow-burn, off-page romance between Calvin and Serena. I must admit he handled the parents well - I just want to know why he's not so keen to reciprocate. Is it because Serena is a witch and not a shifter? Or are there further hidden nuggets to discover?

Now, when Calvin and Serena go for their little trip to Jerome - will Serena learn about the McAllisters, etc. I hope so, I love a crossover LOL.

Another great book in a great series. Keep 'em coming!

Selena’s mother and stepfather have bought a Victorian mansion to use as a vacation home in Globe, Arizona. After one night in the house, it seems like there might be a demonic infestation, and who better than psychic Selena to investigate. Selena calls in help, and when someone winds up dead, the stakes get higher. The mystery was OK. I felt like I was figuring things out much faster than Selena. She hasn’t learned her lesson about putting herself in danger. I found it a little frustrating that she didn’t tell some other people about some of the things that happened - some which were very serious. Keeping information from her friends, especially Calvin, is not good. Her relationship with Calvin has progressed a bit, but there aren’t as many scenes with him as I would have liked, which was disappointing. Most of the time, they just have dinner together. I would have liked to see him figure more prominently in the story. We also learn a little more about Archie, her talking cat who is actually a man who was cursed 60 years ago. It was a quick, easy read with likable characters.

So, the saga continues with Christine Pope’s Hedgewitch for Hire Series Book 3 “Household Demons”. Selena Marx’s Globe’s Hedgewitch is having a quiet summer dealing with tourists navigating her Woo-Woo New Age store. A call from her mother and stepfather that they are on their way from SoCal to Globe because they purchased a haunted Victorian mansion in town alters her entire peaceful summer. Of course, all Selena wanted was to continue her ongoing romance with the very handsome law enforcement officer of the San Ramon Tribe, Calvin Standingbear. But it was not to be for Selena, but for her to discover what or whom is in possession or haunting this beautiful old mansion. As always Christine’s imagination in her amazing stories takes you into adventures filled with suspense and excitement as Selena attempts to uncover this mystery. I highly recommend this book along with the others in this series.

Household demons is the third book in Christine Pope’s Hedgewithc for Hire Series. Selena is presently residing in Globe, Arizona, a decision brought about in book 1 and decided by her Tarot cards. She opened and runs a New Age store and enjoying a quiet life in a very small town. Book three seemed to cause some disruption in that her mother and step-father bought an old house that supposedly was haunted. Well, so much for an enjoyable summer with her new boyfriend, Calvin! The house displayed a variety of noises and a smell that literally chased her parents away. Of course, Selena had to get to the bottom of all the problems and almost lost her life in trying to find some of the answers. So, who were the criminals? What made this particular house so interesting? Were the demons real? Read the book and find out! I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed it and as with the majority of Christine Pope’s books, it is hard to stop reading until the very last page.

Household Demons is a great third read. We get to learn a bit about Archie, feel a bit of heat between Calvin and Selena, and get to meet Selina’s parents, who are not so sure about their daughter’s special abilities. . . at least at first.
Mom and (step) Dad, Selina’s that is, surprise her by purchasing an exquisite mansion right in Globe! Did I say a haunted Victorian exquisite mansion? But when Selina tries to check it out, she dose not feel a thing! Ghosts? Demons? Something much more wicked? Things get a whole lot stranger before they start to make sense. Unfortunately, an explained death in the house adds to the daunting puzzle. Typical of Pope, with her endless creative mind, the way it concludes, is not at all what you expected. However, she very neatly ties up all the loose ends, leaving the reader satisfied and with a smile on their face.
Household Demons is a delightful mix of suspense, humor and romance, an absolutely fun read for a warm summer weekend!

I liked the first two books but Selena was just too dumb in this book. I just can't continue reading this series. I feel so damn frustrated and angry.

I don't know why she continuously hid important information from Calvin and later Hazel. I maybe understand that her instincts told her to not tell him what happened in the mansion but I couldn't she tell Hazel. Especially because she took Hazel there after being attacked without any defense. Such a great fucking friend!

And what is with this book being a clean romance? The author alludes to sexual things multiple times but the sex is fade to black. Not to mention even the kisses aren't descriptive beyond the taste of the last meal the MMC ate before the kiss (I mean... ewwww... is that supposed to be sexy?) and some vague flowery words. Ugh!

This book continues the story of Selena in Globe, AZ about five months after arriving. She's still "in a developing relationship" with Calvin, feeding the "cursed cat" Archie, developing friends among the townsfolk, and starting to feel comfortable in her shop, Once in a Blue Moon. Then her mother and step-father buy a mansion in Globe and come to visit. Unfortunately, the mansion seems to be infested with demons. One investigator is found dead, but from the demons or accidentally is the question. Selena tries to help her parents, but the infestation is just too intense, so they go back to LA. Selena can't get past the mystery and continues the investigation. The source of the infestation and the exorcism give an unexpected, interesting twist to the story.

This is book 3 in the series and it hit a long home run for me!

Our hedge witch has been developing a romantic relationship over the course of this series. Her folks have unexpectedly just bought a lovely old home in town, but it's showing signs of a demonic infestation--kind of. An innocent man investigating the source of the home's problems is dead after a suspicious fall down the stairs. Her folks have left town. Our witch just won't leave the situation at the house alone and things start to get really ugly and you need read the whole series and this book for yourself to find out the truth! Book 4 is coming in October!

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW for Household Demons by Christine Pope. In the third book of the Hedgewitch for Hire we once again find Selena in trouble... or should I say that trouble once again finds Selena. Selena's mom comes to town and the trouble soon begins. I love that this series is a combination of mystery, slow burn romance and magic. Each story contributes to the moving the series forward, but can easily be read as stand alone.

This honest and voluntary review was made possible by reading a copy through Bookfunnel.

This is the latest installment in the Hedgewitch for Hire series and it was a very entertaining read. I really enjoyed the relationships in this book between Selena and her parents, her budding relationship with Calvin and her friendship with Josie. The mystery surrounding the demon possession was very good and a great conclusion to this book. Christine Pope does a very good job of bringing the state of Arizona and it’s wine culture to the reader….makes one want to take a road trip and experience both first hand. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Selena's life is full of ups and downs, especially with her mom's visit and move to Globe. Oh boy... I just can't with Selena's mom. She refuses to acknowledge Selena's magic. But it was a good book, I will admit that Sheriff Calvin drives me up a wall with how he treats Selena. I enjoyed this book and I am excited for the next one. The mystery, suspense, and slow burn romance has been great at keeping me enthralled, Christine Pope has kept me on the edge of my seat with this series. I did receive an ARC but this does not affect my thoughts or opinions.

Brilliant

Household Demons (Hedgewitch for Hire Book 3) by Christine Pope. Selena gets a call from her mum. Her and her husband had bought a house in Globe. When they move in, demons move in as well. Selena can't handle demons so she calls in an expert who promptly falls down the stairs and is killed. Something doesn't feel right to Selena and as usual she gets herself into a tight spot.

Hi Christina, while I loved the on the edge of the seat story and the continuing love story surrounding Selena and Calvin I would love to see more witchyness in play! Didn't really see alot of that in this book!
I do however look for to reading the rest of the series and all the other books you have written.

You are an amazing writer Christina never stop!
From one Pope to another keep going so mote it be!

A hauntingly brilliant book.

Selena's life is ticking along, till her mother drops a bomb!!

Her husband and she have brought a house.........in Globe!!!!???!??!

But not just a home, a supposedly haunted home 😮😮

Selena checks it out and she can't find anything ghostly.

But only hours of being there the ghosts start their nastiness.

Selena thinks it's worst than ghosts, more like demons.

Great book and we'll written.

You can always trust a hedgewitch to know a fake when she sees it.

Selena's mom buys a house in Globe. It appears the house might be infested with demons, but Selena and two others don't sense the their presence. Are they real or not one witch dies before he can tell any one... It was an enjoyable read.

Christine Pope did it again, this was another great story but this time bit evolves demons. Het mom and stepdad buy this old mansion in Globe where Selena lives that is haunted but not just by ghosts but by demons. Selena must figure out what is going on before her parents decide to sell this beautiful old place.

Every bit as good as the first two in the series. Selene hasn’t learned anything from her previous experiences with murder! She still doesn’t think things all the way through, but just charges ahead and follows her gut feelings. And the cat was certainly more chatty this time. Looking forward eagerly to the next Instalment!

Selina certainly has away to get in trouble. Although it's not always connected to the supernatural. Finally her relation with Calvin gets going. It'll be nice to learn when his people will accept her.
