Wolf & Witch: Book 1: Lone Wolf

Rate this book
From the author of the horror novel The Act and the NightDragon series comes a new series in horror and adventure.

Wolf or man?

A lone wolf is bitten by a member of a pack of werewolves, and astonishingly transforms into a human being; a result unheard of in the curse of lycanthropy.

In the City of Nocturnity, Solstice Gunn, a witch and researcher of the Occult, is no stranger to the world of supernatural phenomena and the legends of black magic. When Amber, an old friend, surprises her with an unexpected visit and in need of assistance, Solstice is willing to help, and soon finds herself housing a pack of werewolves. Even more astounding to her, one is a supernatural hybrid that defies the legendary lycanthropic curse. Together, the young witch and the werewolf clan endeavor to train this new breed of lycanthrope in the ways of modern man.

Unbeknownst to them, Kennedy Bullock, a powerful businessman and member of an ancient mystery cult, has ventured to Nocturnity on the trail of the pack. A hunter of supernatural creatures, he has his own dark secret, and seeks to pit himself against these arcane creatures of legend.

With the advent of the next full moon, Solstice becomes caught in a vicious battle between the savage beasts of the night and a man who is more than he seems. Now her survival depends on a hybrid being that is more animal than human: the lone wolf that is a man.

Talented martial arts fiction writer Scott Blasingame delivers his sophomore horror effort with Wolf & Witch, a unique and action-packed take on werewolf lore. His previous horror novel, The Act, had been a little more of a chamber effort, focusing on the dark side of magic through the point of view of a small group of characters. This book is set in the same place--the fictitious city of Nocturnity, CA--as The Act and his NightDragon series and expands that world to be a more magical (and even more dangerous) world than it was before.

Thrust into the spotlight as the lead female protagonist is Solstice Gunn, the occult-inclined sister of Sonya Gunn from the NightDragon books. She had been mentioned in passing several times before, but now she's given an actual character: the titular witch who is in over her head when a pack of werewolves, including an old high school friend, literally show up at her doorstep. Joining them is an anomaly not covered in any supernatural literature: a reverse-werewolf--a creature born a wolf who can now transform into a human. And lurking in the background is the multi-millionaire hunter Kennedy Bollock, who is tracking the wolves, and who holds a few secrets of his own.

Much like the aformentioned wolf->man, the book Wolf & Witch is a more of a hybrid between Blasingame's action sensibilities and outright horror. While the inclusion of werewolves would automatically place it in the horror/fantasy genre, the tone of the story doesn't really veer into horror until the ultraviolent climax. The finale is certainly more action-oriented than The Act, but Blasingame flinches neither at the violence nor who it is directed at. But until then, the story feels almost multi-genre, not unlike the Hong Kong films that inspired his other writings: there is room for situational comedy (the side character Darla is the best), romance, adventure and magical awe. In typical Blasingame fashion, there are ample references to classic martial arts movies throughout, both as background details and in the action sequences (think Underworld by way of a Scott Adkins film).

While Scott's eye for detail in the action department is as sharp as ever, it is in his entertaining characters that this story truly finds its footing. Solstice Gunn, whose earlier descriptions in the NightDragon series suggested a New-Agey type with her head perpetually in the clouds, is a very likable and down-to-earth woman, who just happens to dabble in macabre art and witchcraft. She has great chemistry with the reverse wolf man and with the other members of the pack, particularly Amber and Darla. There are a couple of extra witches thrown in who add to the supernatural ambience and are fun to read as well. Even the villain of the piece, Kennedy, is no mustache-twirling one-dimensional baddy. He comes with an innate charm to him that makes his scenes fun to read without rooting actively for his death...until the depths of his plans are revealed.

As always, a book by Scott Blasingame is always worth a read. There is enough action, gore, likable characters and kinks in traditional werewolf lore to keep readers entertained throughout its 360-page duration. Recommended!

When a werewolf bites a mortal man…well, we all know what happens. But what if a werewolf bites an actual wolf, and that wolf then transforms into a man? That’s one of the intriguing concepts in Scott Blasingame’s well-written and exciting novel Wolf & Witch.

Blasingame has a great knack for world-building, and he does so with a confidence and an in-depth vision of his characters and their circumstances. In this story, we get a wonderfully imaginative view of the supernatural side of his Nocturnity city setting from his other tales. In Wolf & Witch, there are packs of werewolves, covens of witches, and other mythological and frightful creatures, all interacting and engaging with each other. Sometimes they get along…and sometimes they don’t.

Two things particularly stand out to me about the author’s writing. First, the dialogue of the characters rings true and realistic. This is how real people talk, and the subtle reactions and depth of characterization are extremely believable and natural. Rather than create extreme caricatures of heroes and villains, we get normal people in extraordinary circumstances, and that makes room for the storytelling to come through. Secondly, the author clearly knows his stuff in regards to the arcane lore that his stories feature. Whether it’s the varied details of the werewolf legends, the practices, texts, and powers of the witches, or the specifics of ancient Greek or Native American mythology, they’re all presented with a satisfying depth that greatly added to the story.

Overall, a very enjoyable and exciting read for fans of old-fashioned horror themes brought into contemporary times!

A unique twist on the werewolf story, complete with a bit of romance, action, suspense, and… Greek mythology?!

The characters are well written, with the author describing mannerisms that are realistic and help to foreshadow and move the story along. I found myself really “feeling” the characters - at times being annoyed at them, sympathizing with them, or wanting to see them succeed. I enjoyed that we get an origin for the “werewolf curse”, but it fits into the story well without feeling shoehorned in. If you’ve read Blasingames other books you’ll enjoy the subtle connections here; Tying it into the fictional city “Nocturnity” that he continues to expand upon and develop through different genres.

This was a fun story that was hard to put down once I started it, each chapter left me wanting to know what was going to happen next.

I picked this book up at a local con and was pleasantly surprised at how well written this book was. From the very first chapter, I was immediately sucked into the story. The characters were very real and relatable. The dialogue was witty and the storyline was very intriguing. As someone descended from Native Americans, I love how respectful the author treated the history and the cultures of the characters. He beautiful blended the Greek mythology, witchcraft, werewolf and Native America lore into one seamless, complex but cohesive story. Highly recommend!! I’m hoping there will be a second book.
