As the King's Man in the North, Ewan Arrowsmith walks a fine line between life and death. Deceit and treachery are his constant companions. But there was a time, long ago, when he only knew truth and the love of a good woman called Beth.
Their affair was brief due to a betrayal that led to tragedy. Years later, in a strange twist of fate, their paths cross again because of the interference of Clan MacGregor. Both have suffered in the intervening years.
This time, they must decide whether a second chance at love is worth risking everything.
Note: This is a spin-off novella from the "Reformed Rogues" series.
Warning: Determined, brawny alpha male ahead and reluctant heroine. Occasional historical inaccuracies and frivolous entertainment. Not suitable for people under 18. Contains some Mature content.

I have enjoyed other books by this author, she openly states to expect historical inaccuracy so you can forgive the mention of things like Gretna green 700 years to early etc. But this book was just disappointing because of the way she handled the female heroine. She had lived through an extremely traumatic and abusive marriage and was obviously supposed to be suffering from the PTSD left behind from this experience. She had vowed never to remarry or be controlled by a man again. Yet the Hero continues to be domineering throughout the entire story. Commanding her to dismiss the lawyer who had helped her because he was jealous, for example, if the mental state of our heroine was to be considered, is exactly the opposite of the type of man she needed and should have elicited a more assertive response from our newly confident leading lady. But no, instead submission which completely goes against the story of her recovery. At one point the hero is advised by the king on how to approach a woman with such previous trauma who references his own marriage and how being forced into the Union had caused his wife to be untrusting. So what does our hero do to the woman who has vowed never to marry again because of her traumatic past and is not speaking to him because she caught him in his home with a naked woman in his lap much like her previous husbands betrayals? Why he weds her by proxy of course! That’s right, without her knowledge and against her will. And she is over joyed of obviously. All previous trauma and betrayal forgotten. Then finally the inaccuracy of the brothers apology. He states he believed the hero dead and his grandfather had lied to him, but the author has obviously forgotten the letter written to the hero by the brother after the hero’s death which he stated to the hero that he supposedly believed dead that his sister was now in love with someone else and married. I feel this book was rushed. There were lots of massive gaps in the story. But also, due to the subject matter of abuse and PTSD, the author really let the heroine down. The psyche of this type of heroine takes a lot more effort and research to write, but even the basics of her recovery were missed in this book. Really disappointing.
After 4 books, (so far), Elina Emerald has become one of my top favorite authors. Each book has Everything romance readers want and love in a book - Romance, Drama, Excitement, Steam, Awesome characters - Hunky, handsome, fierce, protective, loving, sexy men. Women who are also fierce, sexy, strong-willed, protective and loving. All, except the bad guys are very likeable characters.
Each book is worth reading, and I'm off to read the next book, Morcha, and the next ones after that...
The story was wonderful I didn’t find any slow points in the book everything was exciting a Page turner it was full of all different emotions I just loved it I really did just as the first book I read it was awesome it really was awesome I loved it I gave it to five but it deserves more than five she’s truly a wonderful writer storyteller well written and it was exciting to read
This novella is a spinoff from the first series by this author. I've enjoyed them so far and plan to continue to read the rest. This character first made an appearance in the second book, Handfast to the Bear. These books should be read in order as the pervious one provides details that help you pull them together. I give this one a solid 3.5 stars. I didn't have quite the same connection to these two as I did to the previous characters but glad they got their HEA.
So this is a short story which was ok..ish for me.Since I did not read the previous books by this author there were a lot of unknown characters and I couldn't connect with them...So I would recommend reading those books first..Otherwise it was a good book...
Another man ho during separation while h is celibate. He never once looked for her in 7 years and mightily enjoyed the variety of women in his bed. I could have loved with that if he’s looked for Beth but he didn’t and took no responsibility for the past.
Beautiful storyline. Love the characters and the blessedness of family who stand by one another. Good to touch base with old friends and their families.
This was a long and complicated romance. What bothered me is that it reads like a modern romance not historical at times. It was really evident in the way the characters interacted and the plot. I couldn't get into the story.
