not a bad sequel! it definitely gets the job done. this expands the world, develops the characters, and creates a new and exciting plot that progresses the overall story seamlessly. i always know what i am going to get when i start a KS book - shes just that dependable/reliable as an author - and this book is no exception.
what did end up surprising me was i found myself much more interested in a new side character! ducot for sure steals whatever scene he is in. EK is known for continuing this world in new series, so heres me praying he gets his own spinoff series! he truly deserves it.
so again, this installment does what its supposed to do - it made me excited to be back in the world and has me looking forward to the next book!
Hmmmmm... while I think this was an entertaining book and a good sequel, there were primarily two things that bothered me, both of which revolved around the romance
✅ I ENJOYED THE PROGRESSION of Eira's character and how she continues to grow into and accept her powers. I'm really hoping that at some point she connects with Adela and they become a powerful duo. I want some badass pirate mother/daughter moments
✅ NOELLE AND ALYSS were really great side characters - Noelle definitely grew on me a lot in this book, I enjoyed all of her comedic relief 😂 Looking forward to more of that!
❌ THE SHIFT IN THE ROMANCE seemed soooo sudden. I thought this was going to be a much slower burn, with awkward and cute moments to go along with the whole first-time-love thing. And there definitely were some of those moments, but then it felt like there was a very quick shift to being serious about the relationship and it just felt off
[POSSIBLE SPOILER] ❌ HOW DARE ELISE use this same trope to ruin a relationship again 😭🤬 I'm so frustrated because the foreshadowing made this really obvious to me and I kept going "pleasenononooooo" to myself as I saw it coming. The only thing that will make this acceptable to me is if there's a love interest switch or something from this point on
✅ THE PLOTLINES WITH The Court of Shadows and The Pillars were interesting. This book went in a completely different direction from what I initially thought it would be but it still turned out really good. And I'm super excited to finally get into the tournament in the next book!
Overall, I think I enjoyed book one a bit more but I still think this was a good sequel. The world expanded a lot, new characters were introduced, and it did a good job setting up the rest of the series. I wanted a bit more from the romance, but this is pretty firmly YA so it is what it is. I see a lot of potential for the next books and am definitely excited to read them once they come out
Steam Scale: 🔥/3 Swoon Scale: ❤️/3
[I was provided an arc of the book by the author - thank you so so much 💖💖 All thoughts and opinions are my own]
I will forever be a fan of the way Elise Kova writes her worlds and magic systems. Elemental is one of my FAVOURITE magic systems ever, but very few authors can craft it beautifully. Kova also introduces three other kingdoms and their magic systems in this second book, and I never had any issue grappling with the intricacies. I am always fascinated to learn more about Kova’s worlds and she has a true talent for spinning political systems and layering her plot.
A lot goes down plot wise in this second book, and i was really excited to pick up right where book one ended. We got a lot of our questions answered, but new ones also arose! I don’t want to give anything away but I enjoyed learning about the Court of Shadows.
Kova’s strong suit is always in her female main characters and really fleshing them out. Eira is a headstrong female, but she is also grappling with the trauma she experienced at the end of book one. I really appreciated that Kova didn’t just gloss over that and showed how it affected not only her, but also her friendships and relationships. How her desire for revenge ended up clouding her judgement and led to rash decisions. However, Eira is still as smart as ever and i loved watching her mind piece together all the clues.
The main downfall of this novel was actually the romance. While I adored it in book one…it fell flat here. We dipped quickly into Insta-Love even though they rarely interacted. There was also a plot development at the end that I saw coming from a mile away and it just left everything sour because it made it seem like all the interactions prior were forced for the purpose of this conflict. I really hope we get to see a return to the romance i i finally adored in the next instalment.
I am SO intrigued to see where book 3 leads, especially because i have been dying for the tournament!!!!
Overall, I highly recommend this series—especially if you love learning about magic systems!
"You thrive in this life, or you die trying. Good luck."
How does Elise always manage to write the most breathtaking fantasy stories and heartbreaking romances ever?? I adore her, and am so thankful to her for having given me an ARC of this amazing book in exchange of an honest review.
“Live as a competitor, try not to raise any suspicion, and, Yargen bless, stay out of trouble.”
In this sequel to the first book, A Trial of Sorcerers, Eira finally finds herself in Meru, the land she always dreamed of—but her time there will prove to be more like a nightmare than a dream. Still haunted by what happened to her brother and seeking vengeance, she will play games far more deadly than the upcoming Tournament. Between secret societies and courts of shadow, with the fate of nations hanging in the balance, Eira will have to learn to trust her powers, her friends, and her heart to make it out alive.
She was learning magic was an almost sentient thing. It lived in stone, water, fire, and in the air itself; it had been strung throughout their world and sorcerers merely tugged on the threads.
This is a book of growth, suspence, action, and of course, romance. Eira is no longer a scared and lonely child, and is decided to find her place in the world and do what's right—no matter how hard she must fight for it. Though there were some moments when I felt her become the typical YA protagonist who launches head-first into danger unnecesarily and carelessly and ends up messing everything up; but other than those few scenes, I really enjoyed seeing her grow and evolve.
“The right decisions were always the hardest ones.”
The plot was full of action, suspence and intrigue. It hooked me from page one and I couldn't stop reading. It sets a fast pace from chapter one and keeps it up until the big finale (which had a plot twist that I DID NOT see coming, even though I read enough of Elise's books to know better by now 😂). I felt this fitted very well with the events that were happening around Eira, so I really enjoyed it.
“I’m jumping at shadows.” “You should be the shadow the world jumps at.”
The world building is mind-blowing, as with all of Elise's books, and I love that we got to understand more about Meru and its politics, and about the mysterious Court of Shadows. Though, what I loved the most were the cameos of Vi, Taavin, Deneya, and even Arwin, and all the nods to the events of Vortex Visions!! Elise Kova is a genious weaver who knows how to merge all her stories and plotlines and characters into a perfect and magestic bigger picture.
“Two competitors in a foreign land, embarking on a quest for glory, danger lurking behind every corner, the fate of nations hanging in the balance, an evil to vanquish, and a secret romance on top of it all! Okay, you’re right, it’s not exactly like one of my favorite novels. It’s better.”
I liked the secondary characters as well, mostly Ducot, and I appreciated the development arc some of them had, like Noelle. Also, shout out to the asexual rep!!! It's not often you find that in a fantasy book, so it really delighted me to see that. I adored that Alyss was such a romance book lover as well, I felt so identified by her!!
“When I kissed you that day at court…it was the rawest form of magic I’ve ever known. ”
As for the romance, it was breathtaking and intense, but I felt it came too suddently and out of nowhere, specially Eira's feelings. BUT THAT CLIFFHANGER AT THE END!?!?!?? I need to read the third book now just to see how (if?) the romance progresses. But the intensity and sensuality were there, and as great as always.
“You’re beginning to like a woman who nearly got you killed?” “I have shit taste in women. That’s been long established.”
Summing up, this was a GREAT book, and an amazing sequel. Heavily action-packed and suspenful, it has some of the best things this genre has to offer—powerful sorcerers and warring kingdoms, secret courts and plotting politicians, an awesome world building (with a ball included!), intense romance, secrets, betrayals, and so much more that we get to see through Eira's experiences in a whole new magical land. I can't wait to see what awaits her and her friends in book three.
“Being wounded doesn’t make you weak. Admitting a transgression was made against you doesn’t sap your strength,” Noelle whispered. “Stop trying to shoulder this alone. You said you would let us help. Embrace that mantra and actually do it.”
A Hunt of Shadows has just continued to solidify how much I adore this story and love the world. And that ending! 😱🙈 Totally wild!
This book is darker and more suspenseful than the first, as Eira continues to try and unravel the secrets around her. And sometimes that hunt leads to disastrous consequences. Beyond that you can, of course, expect sweet slow burn romance—I was crazy invested in this ship in the first book, and you can bet the romance was up my alley.
And Ducot!?! My new favorite character. Elise truly has a way of creating secondary characters that jump off the page. I loved him!
I loved seeing Eira and the others again, too! This series truly has a great friend group and I couldn’t get enough of them. Also—shout out for the ace rep in this! It felt like such a natural and accepted part of the story, and the characters talking about it was really meaningful and heartfelt.
The only reason this isn’t a five star read is for four (minor) reasons: a) Eira was running headlong into danger so often that it was giving me anxiety and I’m not a huge fan of stories where characters try to “go it alone” so to speak, rather than asking for help from their loved ones. Eira is very capable, but she stressed me out! 😂 b) the romance felt sidelined at times, which left its progression closer to the end of the book feeling a little rushed and a bit unbelievable—I’d have liked to see it get more focus throughout the novel, especially with how important it becomes later on! c) the story was repetitive at times, I do wish we’d gotten more of the competition alongside Eira’s scheming, missions, and following orders d) I haven’t read Air Awakens or Vortex Visions, but know a little of the story from those books. I didn’t find this to be a problem with A Trial of Sorcerers, but with this one, I felt like there was information about previous events and politics/world building that I should be aware of, but was a little lost on. It was very small in comparison to the larger story, but at times the characters felt privy to info I should know but didn’t.
That said, I still thoroughly enjoyed this one! The things I highlighted are small peas to the greater story! This book is full of intense action, great banter, more court intrigue and machinations, and an incredibly developed world and magic system that you feel you can step off the page into.
And after that ending, I am dying for the next book now!
Ahh, I've been waiting for this ever since the ending of ATOS, and A Hunt of Shadows did not disappoint! Her grief an open wound, Eira is obsessed with getting revenge. The gleaming metropolis of Risen that she has dreamed of for years, full of magical people from all walks of life, is unfamiliar territory where her enemies lay in hiding. Caught up in the undercurrents of the city as the Court of Shadows battles with the Pillars for the future of Meru, Eira will have to dive deeper into her power if she is to survive.
Eira is, as always, such a fun protagonist to follow. She's not particularly heroic, but she's a survivor and she's willing to play dirty. At the same time, this book has her open up to the people she loves, to bring her back from the darkness that's always lurking within her. She goes through so much yet emerges all the stronger for it.
Seriously, though, girl needs a hug and a hot chocolate.
The plot kept me riveted, with Eira edging toward danger and the constant mystery of who we can trust. The Pillars are absolutely awful and they make terrific antagonists for Eira to go up against. And for all the Vortex Chronicles folk, getting to see a few familiar faces is so, so wonderful. Elise Kova's ability to balance heart with action really shines in this one.
Super stoked for book 3, but man does 2023 feel like an eternity away. - (Late night ravings after finishing the book in one go): I’ll come back and write a full review later but I just gotta say that I am in MISERY.
*Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
Rating this 3 stars when it prob only deserves a 2 bc I just loved the first book in this series so much and felt there was real potential for it to be my next fav series, am hoping that with #3+ we can still recover here. (Spoilers ahead)
This missed the mark for me on a lot of things starting with Eira. I feel like there was a complete character/personality change here. Did she just suffer a huge loss in the last book, yes, but when we ended she was out for vengeance, determined, ready to fuck shit up in Meru... what we got was an annoying hot mess that just made stupid decisions. Her biggest strength in the first book was that she's fucking SMART and that just was not the case in this book. I could have chalked this up to the loss of her brother and the author wanting to bring out her struggle this way, but thennnn we move on to Cullen AND what the actual fuck? What happened to him? This character was a complete 360 from the first book in a bad bad way. He just became a meek little boy that was completely obsessed with Eira even though she was annoying AF the whole time (and I have a real hard time believing he's a virgin when he was legit golden swoon worthy prince boy in the first? Please. This made me cringe).
Next mark missed (like utterly missed), was the romance. First book introduced a nice slow burn mixed perfectly with the action, magic and drama, but all this book delivered was extreme, could-not-even-buy, insta love thrown in all randomly like it didn't know where to fit.
I was really here for the slow burn between these two in the first book - they were so cute and brought out the good, strong parts in eachother and you could feel that they could help one another grow when it came to their obvious flaws. There was so much opportunity to have them struggle a bit more with everything going on, create some serious tension and then give us what we wanted... which I guess ended up being a semi-deece sex scene. TBH there was more flirty fun chemistry between Cullen and Noelle and Eira and the mole shifter?
Lastly, The Court of Shadows was lame AF in my opinion. This was supposed to be the shady underbelly of mother fucking ME-RU, yet this group was almost a joke, not intimidating, way too easy/trusting to let Eira fuck everything up and borderline boring!
There was a lot of other random shit that just didn't play out right or make sense how characters didn't have different reactions - the guards at the manor? were they paper people? Eira walked out the front door waving 10 separate times and they didn't know? Ferro believing Eira to be a devout convert bc she spent 3 days in a hole? The 'adults' in this book are all so conveniently dumb.
I really hope the third book can get back on track, find the old character personalities and deliver what could be such an interesting and unique magical world/system. MAKE MERU GREAT AGAIN!
xx

While I love the world that this is set in, I have my problems with the story. I loved the first book and I wanted to read about the tournament and everything around it. I wasn't in for a conspiracy with multiple secret organisations who infiltrate everything with Eira smack in the middle of everything. But that is all this book is. One secret group chases the next and the tournament hasn't even started. Combine that with the romance that had me really cringe (I swear if that guy ends up with her in the end, I will scream). He himself remained completely colorless to me, I had no idea about his character other than Eira telling us how amazing he is. But the stunt he pulled at the end? Well that brought some color into things but I don't like. He is a complete ass and Eira is right to be furious with him. I would have another love interest in mind that could turn things around but I don't think that will be the turnout. If the next book would just be the tournament, I would be in. Since the secret organisations won't stop overshadowing everything, I will stop this series here. Which I am heartbroken about. If you're interested in this series, please give it a chance!
Thank you Elise for allowing me to read an early copy!!
This was an enjoyable read.
I think I have on gripe with Elise and that’s her romance. It’s a bit repetitive in how the romance plays out but I still enjoyed it. I just hope in other series she will mix it up a bit. I can’t really discuss it without spoiling so I’ll shut up.
Besides that I did enjoy the book. The reveals were great. I liked the plot but I don’t think it was as exciting as I thought it would be? I think this book relied a bit more on dialogue which was fine with me, but just a heads up for people going into the book.
I can’t wait to see where the next one takes us considering the end. I’m ready!
I enjoyed the first book in this series, but the second book in the series really drew me in. I genuinely enjoyed the fast pace, as well as twists and turns, and it was fun to follow Eira along in the next part of her journey.
I had to stop reading this when the romance went nought to one hundred in a matter of pages. They had hardly interacted in the book and suddenly they are declaring their undying love for each other. Completely unrealistic.
It completely undermined the whole book for me.

A Hunt of Shadows picks up shortly after book one, Eira is grieving and is out for revenge and while on her mission she gets pulled into a secret court who have their own mission to battle the Pillars to save the future of Meru.
I really enjoyed seeing Eira grow as a character in book two, she makes a great protagonist and I like that she's not really thinking about being a hero and doing the right thing, she is willing to do what it takes to get her own revenge. As with book one you get a real sense of Eira battling her own inner demons and trying to learn to trust others and open her self up, she's been through so much but she's still trying to get through it and be better for it.
I adored Ducot, such a great character I can't wait to get more of him. He brought humor and a friendship that just had me wanting to give him a huge hug!
Ferro has become a villain I actually dislike as a character. The possessiveness and abusiveness he gives to Eira makes you want to scream. Kova certainly knows how to write a villain you want to hate.
The plot was fast paced, and overall I really enjoyed. I think I would have liked a little more interaction between Eira and Cullan, I loved the chemistry in book one between them and this felt a little lost for me, so when we got to the shocker at the end I wasn't as devastated as I what I thought I could have been.
I have to mention the cover, as with all Elisa Kova's books this one is just as stunning. I love it.
I can't wait to continue on with this series. Thank you so much to Elise for an advanced copy of the book.
For intense, emotional, intelligent YA fantasy, it just doesn’t come better than an Elise Kova book! And, this one is a perfect example. As the second installment in her “Trial of Sorcerers” series, this story picks up right where the first left off. Eira and her friends are traveling to the huge Trial of Sorcerers, but before the games even begin intrigue and danger hit - big time! I didn’t care for one of the villains in the first book so I was a bit miffed that he shows up as a main antagonist in this story. I prefer him being dead, but…. His inclusion requires Eira to grow at a rate that probably could never have happened otherwise. She is brash and makes many decisions that she must pay for (and drove me bat-crap crazy). It is edge-of-your-seat tension that takes the reader through that painful growth right along with her character.
If there is a weakness in this book it would be in the romance. There was very little time spent in any relationship development, leaving it feeling completely insta-love with a huge twist at the end. Still, it opens up all kinds of possibilities for the future books. As a whole, this installment is a great stop on an overall riveting journey!
Well...I think Eira mourning her brother, joining one secret organization, joining a second secret organization as a double agent, preparing for the biggest tournament ever, discovering more secret magic she has AND having a secret love affair that is thwarted by a (you guessed it) secret engagement might have been a bit too much on her plate.......... I was annoyed and kind of stressed out from all this. There is so much potential here, but this book was kind of an exhausting jumble of secrets.

I gave this book 5/5 stars: A Hunt of Shadows continues Eira's story shortly after where it left off in A Trial of Sorcerers. After what she's been through she's hurt, she wants vengeance, and she's a bit reckless. And honestly in her situation I'd feel the same. While there was a lot more competition in book one there is hardly any in book 2 as we set the scene for the next book(s), but that doesn't stop this one from being action packed, full of betrayal, and a dash of romance. The author managed yet again to write a whirlwind story that's difficult to set down until the end.
We get to learn a bit more about Meru and the rest of the world Elise has created that we began to learn about in Air Awakens. The expansion to this world and the interconnection between characters and events is just insane to me. This right here is why I definitely recommend reading Air Awakens series followed by Vortex Chronicles and THEN this series.
Nothing frustrates me more than a hero or heroine who makes the same mistakes over and over and never learns from them! Part of the reason I loved the Air Awaken series is because the main characters would make mistakes and then learn and grow stronger from them. I can't say the same about this series. Countless times Eira (the main character) does something dumb and completely reckless right after multiple of her friends and colleagues tell her not to. Putting her life and others at risk. She has a moment of regret and then makes another reckless move. Had to force myself through this one hoping it would get better... Never did.
Lowest rating for this series yet. I usually admire Kova’s protagonists but there’s just something about Eira’s way of thinking that I just can’t stand. Also, with the slow pacing and events of this book that are out of place, I really thought the whole tournament idea was thrown out the window for some covert mission scenes. Guess not since the next book will pick up the pace on that (hopefully).
this book was really boring, and it just dragged on and on and on. I really loved the first book, and was really looking forward to reading this one, honestly didn’t live up to my expectations. I couldn’t even finish it, maybe if a third one comes out i might give it a second try, but rn its a 2,5
This book would've been 4 stars because of all the magic and cool plot, but there were parts where it was just so boring and for the length of the book it felt like it crawled by
First and foremost thank you to Elise for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review! This review will be spoiler free for this book but will probably contain some spoilers for book 1 so be warned!
I've started this review about a million times but my brain will not stop running in circles trying to comprehend everything I just read!! I absolutely loved that this book takes place shortly after the end of book 1 (thank goodness for that) with all the competitors on their way to Meru for the tournament. After having read Elise's Vortex Chronicles series I was so excited to head back to Meru and loved being able to see it from Eira's perspective! While you definitely don't need to read the Vortex Chronicles series to understand this series I absolutely loved all the little connections between the series and knowing a bit more about some of the people you meet in this book! A Hunt of Shadows was a perfect mix of information and action that had me reading as fast as I could to find out what was going to happen. I was constantly creating theory after theory about what was happening and loved that at least a few of my theories were correct!! But in true Elise fashion I definitely did not see some of those twists and turns coming!! I love the journey Eira takes throughout this book. After the death at the end of book 1, I knew Eira was going to struggle and struggle she did. But I love how through that death and the subsequent events that occur because of it, she becomes so much stronger and confident in herself and her abilities. I just love Eira so much and want to smoosh her in a big hug and tell her everything will be alright!
While I absolutely love being able to read my favorites series sooner the extra long wait for the next book is killer!! I need book 3 like right now and will be counting down the days until next year so I can find out what the heck is going to happen!!! I highly recommend this book to fans of Elise's other books, elemental magic and fantastical worlds or anyone looking for a thrilling quick read!
Calling one and all anti-hero lovers! After the jarring sequence of events in book , Eira is determined to have her revenge. Eirs redraws the future everyone set for her. She will have vengeance and justice, no matter the dangers.
We delve deep into the shadows of Meru including Queen Lumeria's literal court shadows, along with the fervent zealots called the Pillars.
Alyss continues to be one of my favorite characters, despite our introduction to many more ( aka a very loveable mole man)
What I know you're actually waiting for me to talk about: the romance. Yes, it is there. It's not as slow burn as the author generally writes with this particular series, but I was honestly fine with that. I am of the belief that if you wait (un) patiently, Elise Kova will always deliver that delicious buen we all desperately crave whether it's slow, medium, or fast. It's becoming clear that this series will be no different....but maybe not in the way we expect. Again, I must admit this is a departure from the way she generally goes, and I'm not sure where the romance is going in book 3. Redemption? New love interest? I hope not, despite it all, I'm still an unapologetic Cullen stan, but the end just didn't feel like him...though I'm reserving judgement till book 3 to see where Elise takes this.
If you are a fan of this author's worked or want to try a new fantasy romance author, this series might be for you!
“Then…if you are destined to destroy me Eira… let it be a destruction of our choosing. I come to you a willing sacrifice” AHHH HAHSHSJSJAJAJSS OMG
I will never understand how anyone can rate anything by Elise kova lower that a 4 or 5 stars. I simply refuse to believe you disliked any aspect if it. Her pacing, world building, intricate characters, romance, political intrigue and sooooo much more has never failed me. She is the one author I’ve come across whose never let her females lose their magic, and has created- at least to me the most significant and kind hearted men.
Enough praise those because deadass this book had me rolling. I need book 3 now and immediately please and thank you. If it’s not in my hands I will collapse. CUZ OMG I genuinely cannot THESE PLOT TWISTS? pleaseeee. Ugh don’t even get me on Cullen and erias relationship. AND ESPECIALLY DONT GET ME STARTED ON WHY I SUDDENLY FEEL THINGS FOR FERRO WHEN ALL I WANT IS FOR HIM TO BE🏴☠️🪦
