Flame of War

Rate this book
Forged Bonds was growing fast and becoming the talk of the city. Those opposed to Sean and his new association would be forced to act quickly, and so Sean was called to City Lord Sharpeyes’ party, where traps had been laid for him.

After crushing the first obstacle, he was now set to fight a duel as Fredrick’s champion. Sean won the duel handily, once he got past the surprise of facing both Aria and Cuander, Lord Sharpeyes’ prized cuon, and went on to save Aria from death at the hands of Lord Sharpeyes’ son, Knight Evan Sharpeyes.

But Sean’s troubles were just beginning. The plans Lord Sharpeyes had set into motion began to unfold, setting the stage for events that would push Sean to his limits.

(This work contains adult situations that some might find offensive, the least of which is graphic sex. This book is about an Overpowered MC and contains a harem. You’ve been warned.)

This is a really good series. I am enjoying it. It focuses more on the day to day life of the main character. Sean doesn't have any one specific goal in mind. He wants to be happy, make his friends and family happy, and keep them safe. That's it. If something gets in his way or threatens his family, then there will be hell to pay. I won't get into any specifics because that would spoil it. The small details are the point, the overall plot is secondary. If you like the previous books, you should definitely like this one.

So many wasted words

The story is good when it’s actually a story. More than half the book is the MC being embarassed about his multiple wives and having a hard time dealing with the worship of said wives and friends “because he’s so different than any other lord”. Luckily the pointless training scenes we’re almost completely absent. It’s weird how I hate so much about these books yet still enjoy reading them.

Twists and turns and plot movement, oh my!

What an excellent entry into this stupendous series. At first I was able to put the book down but once I hit the halfway point, it was nonstop reading of epic storytelling.

The development of the plot reminds me a lot of what the MC says: I just want to craft. There is a lot of day to day life happening and I loved it. Some days were sped up or skipped because we knew what was happening, but otherwise we got some great details and pacing in the day to day life of the MC and his bonded.

There was certainly some political shenanigans happening, but not so much as to be intrusive or derailing to the overall story.

The end tied together quite nicely with some surprises, THEN IT STOPPED! A few people have complained about the cliffhanger ending but I thought it was great. I was already going to get the next book in the series, but now I'm going to actively watch for updates until it drops.

Great entry into an intriguing series that I cannot wait to continue.

Has to rewrite because of new "policies"

Apparently I'm now to inappropriate for this site *rolls eyes* so I had to rewrite this. I usually, usually like his books, but one gripe I have is that there is way to much "unwanted intimacy" in them, this one is no different. The ending was, at best a cliff hanger.(Let's just say I said some words that would make a sailor blush) at more than just the ending the last few chapter ruined my mood, but that is just because I REALLY hate "unwanted intimacy". From personal and second hand experience with it. I thought he had finally moved on from those topics I was wrong. Still a good book but I just can't give it five stars the cliff hanger was enough to drop it to a four the rest just chipped at it more.

Cheap ending.

All build up that lasts forever. The lines that are crossed before Sean will act are ridiculous. The ending is as cheap as any I have read in quite some time. The culmination of this book feels forced, The author did not know where to go with it, the ending battle proves that, the cliffhanger is pathetic. This one is a let down.

4.5. Very well-written as is all of the author's recent work, but it loses a 1/2 star for being more "slice-of-life" than I really appreciate. As this is a personal preference I won't penalize a full star, since this was better than a "4" book.

Great read, I could barely put it down, great development, the ending though was a killer, as with the firts book there are some lost. Its good to see how the author decided to expand on Sean powers and habilitys, and thankfully he decided to invest time in his battle magic.

Really brutal cliffhanger.

Cliffhanger?!?!?! Really? WHY????? 😱😵😤👿 Not a problem with a completed series. But an uncompleted series? When the author is working through several series in rotation so you've literally got to wait for the author to get back around to this one? Nasty.

I have really loved most of what this author does but this just seems mean. I've always pretty much pounced on new releases but am thinking I'll have to add his works to my "don't read until the series is complete" list. 😡😭

Another excellent addition to the series, and after an awesome scene ends in a cliffhanger, and as I am always late, I have the pleasure of continuing with the series and book 6 right away, and will be able to finish the series in just 6 more books to go. I am in a kind of Daniel Schinhofen binge right now; this was the 18th book from him that I finished, and I might continue with another of his series after I am done with this series. I started this one as this looks to be a completed series. So let's go and Keep on Reading.

People who don't read generally ask me my reasons for reading. Simply put, I love reading, so I have made it my motto to Forever Keep on Reading. I love reading everything except for self-help books, even occasionally. I read almost all the genres, but YA, Fantasy, and Biographies are the most read. My favorite series is Harry Potter, but then there are many more books I adore. I have bookcases filled with books that are waiting to be read, so I can't stay and spend more time on this review. Remember, I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and then just Keep on Reading.

Great series, bad ending

So this series is pretty great, and I have really enjoyed it thus far and will be reading the next installment. That said there are a few issues with the series and this book I think the author should address.
Series issues first: I really don’t like that the author is throwing like like six wives per book into the harem. I enjoy a good harem read, but when the group gets too large you begin losing character development. It seems like the further into the series we go, the less attention Fiona and Myna get which I find disappointing. I’d prefer more character development with the established characters rather than constantly expanding the harem.
Book issues: (contains spoilers) I really didn’t like the ending of this book. The author left a glaring cliffhanger that is not consistent with his other books and I just found that irritating. Twenty more kindle-length pages would have put the characters in a great stopping place but he went with ending mid-battle which is just wrong. Secondly, he really broke the world immersion by introducing characters from Valhalla into the end battle with like no explanation as to why they were there when none of the gods were supposed to have any influence in the world. If Sean was bending the rules to a breaking point (paraphrasing the author’s statements in one of the books) then a group of Viking deities should have some really good reason for being there, and I just didn’t get how or why they were there at all. I really hope the author doesn’t do this stuff again in future installments.

Book Review: "Flame of War" (Binding Words #5) by Daniel Schinhofen
By Kiba Snowpaw, Alpha Ice Wolf of HowlStrom – ready to tear in, claws out and tail high 🐾❄️

Introduction
Awooo, cubs and packmates—strap in, this review is gonna get snowy and wild. "Flame of War", the fifth entry in Daniel Schinhofen’s Binding Words saga, dropped on July 7, 2020, and is 514 pages of *harem-lit*, political traps, soul-bond drama, and more slice-of-life tea-sipping than a den full of napping kitsunes. This one’s got everything: duels, rescue missions, sex, betrayals, and one of those cliffhanger endings that’ll make your fur stand on end and your paw itch for the next book.

Essential Hook & Thesis
When the only thing thicker than the snowdrifts is the web of lies and loyalty that binds you, how far will you go to protect your pack?
That’s the heart of Flame of War—it’s about fighting for your chosen family, navigating deadly court intrigue, and finding the strength to rise, even when every tail in the city wants to see you fall.

Plot Summary
Sean, the OP alpha of Forged Bonds, is now city-famous and painted as a target. Lord Sharpeyes (just the name makes my hackles raise) lays out a cunning, deadly party trap for Sean. After a duel with Lord Sharpeyes’ prized Cuon and some slick power moves, Sean’s gotta pull a near-miraculous rescue to save Aria, only to see the real enemy’s plan unfolding behind the scenes. But the party’s just starting—schemes and betrayals boil over, enemies stack up, and Sean’s got to keep his family together while political hellfire rains down. By the time the final blow lands, the whole pack’s left bleeding, with a killer cliffhanger howling in the background.

The Author
Daniel Schinhofen’s name is basically the magic mark for indie harem fantasy and GameLit/LitRPG. He’s got more titles than a noble with a trophy room, and he’s beloved for his world-building, immersive contracts, and oh-so-complicated relationships. He started in 2016 and has since become a bestseller with rabid fans and some serious genre cred. Not much in the way of literary awards (let’s be real, this genre doesn’t get that love), but the wolfpack loyalty of his readers is a badge of honor.

Characters
Sean – Still the Alpha, still so damn OP it hurts, but also as emotionally tangled as a three-headed winter hydra. He’s strategic, kind, and sometimes *too* humble for his own good, but watching him outthink, outfight, and outlove the world never gets old—mostly.
Aria & Cuander – Not just pretty faces: Aria’s a focal point for emotional stakes, Cuander is a battle beast, and their fates twist right alongside Sean’s.
Lord Sharpeyes & Knight Evan – Your classic, manipulative antagonists—dripping with political venom, always a few steps ahead.
The Harem (Chastity, Andrea, Lilly, Felora...and counting) – We’re well into double digits now. Some still get spotlight moments (Lilly, Felora, and Aria have arcs), but others start to fade into background fluff as the series grows. Group dynamics? Complex as a wolf pack’s pecking order, but sometimes at the expense of individual depth.

Structure
Here’s where Schinhofen drops his pawprint: slow burn, lots of day-to-day, and careful layering of character and relationship drama. The book is meticulously paced—sometimes *too* meticulous. The first half is all about parties, alliances, and relationship wrangling; action and bloodshed don’t drop until you’re good and cozy. When it pops off, it’s all teeth and claws, but the cliffhanger ending is sharp enough to leave a mark. If you hate unfinished business, you’re gonna yowl at the moon.

Themes & Analysis
At its core, Flame of War is a snowy, messy ode to loyalty, chosen family, power, trauma, and justice. Sean’s journey is about standing up when the world’s stacked against you, and how real power comes not from raw strength, but from binding your fate to others and daring to care, hard. There’s also a running exploration of how love, sex, and trust get tangled in poly relationships—and, yeah, it’s messy, it’s complicated, and it’s not always pretty.

Scenes: Sex, Harem, Erotica, and Romance
Look, if you ain’t here for the harem, you’re in the wrong den. The sex scenes are explicit and numerous, but not lazy. Every bedroom tussle is a power move, a confession, or a healing moment—at least when the author’s on his game. That said, the “one more wife, one more bed, one more drama” cycle is starting to show its seams. Some readers are feeling “wife bloat,” and if you’re not keeping notes, you’ll forget who’s who. Also, sensitive content warning: there’s a brutal, emotionally charged sexual assault and murder, and it’s not played for shock—it hurts, and it changes the pack forever. The mature themes are handled with a pretty deft paw, but if that’s not your jam, heed the warnings.

World-Building
Schinhofen still flexes world-building muscle like a direwolf on a fresh kill: political alliances, magical contracts, social hierarchies, city life—if you want to feel like you live in Hearthglen, you’re gonna. Magic’s less about fireballs, more about subtle contracts and shaping society. Is it immersive? Hell yeah. Is it sometimes bogged down by too much tea-sipping and relationship check-ins? Also hell yeah.

Praise & Critique
Praise:
- Deep, evolving relationship drama—the harem’s not just for wish fulfillment, it’s an engine of the plot.
- Sharp, believable political intrigue—antagonists and allies actually feel dangerous and smart.
- World-building with teeth—the city is alive, the contracts are real, and the magic system is consistent.
- Cliffhanger that *works* (even if it hurts)—keeps you coming back for more.

Critique:
- Pacing is slow, sometimes glacial—expect to slog through domestic fluff before anything bites.
- Harem bloat—characters blur, old favorites fade, emotional payoff gets diluted.
- Cliffhanger is brutal—this isn’t a neat ending, it’s a cut-off in the heat of battle.
- Too much relationship validation—the constant “you are enough, no you are enough” dialogue gets repetitive and saps some urgency.
- Plot jumps & confusion—with so much going on, it can feel like you’re missing crucial scenes or like the story’s jumping from snowbank to snowbank with no warning.
- Heavy content warning—sexual assault, murder, and trauma aren’t shied away from.

Comparison
Against Schinhofen’s earlier works or other LitRPG/harem authors, this is *deeper*, *messier*, and way more emotionally ambitious. Forget “stat sheets and power creep”—this is about building a life, not just a legend. But if you want more adventure and less pillow talk, you’ll find the middle chunk a hard, cold slog. Compared to other harem fantasy? There’s more heart here, but also more confusion and bloat.

Personal Evaluation
As your Alpha, I’ll level with you: This book left my tail half-frozen, half-burning for more. There’s so much going on—too much, sometimes—that I found myself confused, as if the blizzard was too thick to track every pawprint. The pack is getting crowded, and with all the jumping between people and drama, I sometimes wanted a good, clean hunt instead of another round of “let’s talk about our feelings.” But damn, when it hits, it hits hard. The emotional stakes are real, the world’s immersive, and the cliffhanger is savage. I howled at the ending, and yeah, I’ll be back for book six.

Conclusion
Flame of War is a slow-burning, harem-packed, drama-heavy fantasy that’s all about love, power, loss, and loyalty. Not perfect, not for everyone, but it’s got claws, heart, and one hell of a bite. If you’re here for real feels, heavy world-building, and a story that puts the “found family” in the front seat—even when the ride gets bumpy—this is your jam. Would I recommend it? To the right wolf—absolutely. To the uninitiated? Grab the earlier books and a notebook, you’ll need both. My rating: 4 out of 5 icy pawprints. A little lost in the snow, but fierce and unforgettable.

May your bonds be unbreakable and your battles fought with honor. Until next time, run wild, packmates.

Mc

It.seems that our hero and main character had a problem in the 5th book of providing proper security to his work interests . That is really weird because normally he or his wives think of everything. he didn't and two people.died. The next day hwngoes.to.a.party out on by the local lord and if we himself having g no energy somofmproblems.arise he has no power to.protect himself or his wives ,funny that should be written that way . The day before he put I it a fire and he and his wife gominto.the fire after trying to.lit it out and retrieved the body's and now the lord using contrived. Stories and his position as the town loses is proving to.everyone at the party that Sean and his wife.started the fire and killed the two people and of course the story does not bring up how close he was to his friends and so.much more .This book is the worst as it is getting boring in the dance that Sean is a pays written up as the guy who is doing g the bad deed. Its a great story but the author has placed the my in a position being smart in one way but totally unknowing .stupid and no thought of how to protect himself and his loved ones against nobility.nThenproblem.I find it the mc knows he is being watched ,he knows that something terrible m could n happen and did not take any action to provide security and he knew that people around him could be the ones to face lain or death . He has left himself m again in a position to.be able to.present no.proof and in this.case it is I'm one sided and sadly he as the MC knew that it would be this way .He just did not.know.how . it is interesting to read that then MC is without energy.when he needs it . we all know.by now that then MC is great person ,he does notmlome.attention or prize but the saying I am just me ...nothing special is getting o!d . The story is fantastical ,especially the fact that 8 adult women can all get along with only minor situations or alterations just to dam good.to believe even in fantasy
I'm skipped the last part of book 5, I could not stand the stupidity of the accusations toward the MC with no way to prove his innocence the way the story is written . The writer will save his bacon some how but I will.pick up the story in book 6.

This author is trying to make the harem thing about true love and companionship, but fails utterly.

For at least five chapters, absolutely nothing took place. I was skimming parts it was so bad.

The author should just focus on building things. The "relationships" come off as super cringey when they try to spend time together. Now they are adding more and more women like it's nothing.

I can see why so many people are upset about the cliff hanger ending. The author ended it abruptly and didn't finish all the plot threads he started. That of itself is bad writing (dangling a lure to "find out what happens next time in the sequel"), but I don't take it into consideration for my rating.

I'm rating it so low because of the cringey filler (to me) of him showing how much he is in love with these women he just met. I can understand the original three, but people are added like it's nothing (I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a single messenger fairy into his "harem". Nothing would surprise me at this point).

Most of this book was fluff (heh, see what I did there?), interspersed with actual plot. I had to go through large amounts of cringe that added nothing to the story. At least for the first half.

The last quarter of the book was serious and had more plot and the moving along of such, than more than half the book. With the actual things that mattered, I think this book could have been half it's size.

The author just sucks at writing believable "naturally in love" harem relationships, and I think all the passing was him failing at trying to convince the readers otherwise (at least me, I know some people that like these cringey cheesy writing).

At least the protagonist didn't go on gushing about what his friend (that he is super gay for) would do.

I hope the sequel does better when I get to it.

Sadly would not reccomend (SPOILER)

I'm a huge fan of this series, however I cannot bring myself to reccomend this book. I was pleased with the story until the brutal rape and murder scene that killed off a new but emotionally important character. I personally understand that some authors want to include rape to try and give emotional weight to a character arc, but I'm not a fan of it. I visit these stories for emotional escapism and being seeing a beloved character raped and murdered in front of us is not pleasant. The real tipping point however was the completely shit ending. Typically Daniel is good about giving us closure by either killing the bad guys, or some way mitigating the fallout. This book however leaves us with an unknown number of wounded or dead companions, a heavily wounded possibly dead MC, and then a potential political victory for the bad guys (cuz there's no way lord sharpeyes is gonna stand by and wait for the MC to wake up in a week before he has him assasinated).

I understand that the writer is struggling to find more readers and is attempting to use cliffhangers to force follow up readers, but if this continues I will not be able to keep reading. There are certain lines I think an author shouldn't cross when writing to their audience, and wanton rape, murder, and defeat does not make a fun escapism story. If mr. Schinofen wishes to be the next GRR Martin, hes more than welcome. Sadly that is not why I read these books.

Disappointed and enthusiastic

I have being given 5 stars on all the books hopping that it gets better on the sex department. But I will give an spoiler as it makes me mad, I was hoping big time on the sex scene with felora as is the character I like the most and hope the author will to something special about her as it has being doing for all but he just gave half of it and left me with blue balls, kinda of speaking and that pissed me off.
The history is great and pretty good imagination, but the fact that he decided not to elaborate on that character sex scenes make it looks clear that he doesn't want to make this for all types of likings, he just want to be everything look pure love and no fetishism at all. I understand it on the first 4 books as he was developing more lovavel characters, but he decided to used a succubus and just left you hanging, that is totally wrong.

Even though I enjoy the whole book a lot and I will be reading the next book and I already have gave him 5 stars on the 4 previous books, even though I wanted more sex scenes, I kept hoping he will at least give one or the great scenes on every book, but cutting the succubus scene is just totally wrong and the only thing I can do about it is make this review and give 1 star as a punishment for not thinking to all audiences.

Great world creation but too much sex (for me).

The world creation of the author is commendable. The story line is fascinating. The main character is, and has been from the start, a superhuman or a demigod. I find mist stories with overpowered heroes to be boring, it's a safe bet superman will always win... But, here, the trials faced by Sean are not usually supernatural but all too realistic. How does one deal with bullies who hace political, social, or economic positions that make them all but untouchable? Instead of going superman and punching people he are threats through buildings in high population dense centers, Sean must work within the system hes made part of or lose people he loves. Very good writing.

My issues involve the marrying and sex scenes with 8 or 9 wives (I'm not sure how many) are not needed for me to enjoy the rest of the story and are more disturbing than appreciated. I keep skipping those scenes and doubt that I have missed anything important. Ideally for me these would be cut out of future novels. Either way, I enjoy the world created here as well as the primary characters.

Nooooooooo!!!

Thank you sooooo much for this next book in the series. And now I am going to lay awake for the next week wanting the next book to come out in the series because I want, no, I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

Seriously, I have enjoyed every book that I have read from Daniel Schinhofen and this one was no exception. The 5th book in the binding words is more about progressing the story then adding anything to it with spots where it jumps from one part to the next and the MC advances some of his projects. This doesn't take anything away from the book but it feel like their could have been more.
I always hate to finish one of these books since I always crave more. Looking forward to whatever book this author puts out next.
Seriously, please put out something soon the withdraw is already setting in.

Not gonna lie, pissed about the cliff hanger.

Damn, excellent story as always, gave me goosebumps, dick move at the end man. If I didn’t love your writing so much I’d be sick right now. I patiently await the next book... please don’t kill any of the wives or fairies... maybe bed ridden for a few days but please no death... leave that main character killing in greenways goblins please, and don’t bring it here, This is the first harem you have created that hasn’t gotten boring! Enough of Sean’s family have already died. Let them have their undisputed vengeance, don’t R.R Martin this shit up. I beg you! Schinhofen you‘re my only hope! Drama aside, you duh man! Keep going man and never quit, just remember to take time for yourself and not get burnt out! Stay awesome, loyal fan here, even if I don’t always care for the harems!

Good Series Poor Cliffhanger

Binding Words is an excellent series and the author, Daniel Schinhofer, can spin a good tail. Flame of War continues the story of Sean McDougall and his troop against corrupt nobility.
Each book in this series does a good job of explaining and laying out the progress Sean makes establishing himself with the people and increasing his power.
There’s a little less action in this installment, until the end, which is a great battle, but the conclusions are left unfinished.
After waiting so long for this epic battle, a few more pages of details would have been appreciated.
Still, and enjoyable series which I look forward to book 6.

Wow.... so good

I would have to say this is one of the best books I have read in quite a while. The depth of feelings and emotions that Daniel is able to stir is incredible, he can swing the reader from happy to sad to anger all in a chapter or two. I would say he needs to tone down the number of wives that Sean seems to take on each book (especially this book). I really hope he can bring the next book out sooner in his writing cycle as this series and Aether’s Revival are my favourites.

Good book, bad ending

Many of these books end with the MC unconscious. I don't understand why, since he isn't dead so he will be fine.
Really a good read, with an engaging mix of relationships, politics, crafting, action, and character development.
If the ending had not been such a manufactured, forced, and stupid mess then this would have been five stars. But a death battle that only requires the deadly crew to kill three foes to kill all foes is a battle with simple tactics and no real tension.

I need book 6 NOW

As always, Daniel builds a world that draws you in. I try to stick to one medium or another when it comes to a series, meaning if I start reading on kindle or listening on audible, that's how I'll continue the series. With Binding Words, however, I couldn't wait for this one to be recorded and released. I had to know what was next. It was an immensely satisfying read, but now I'm left in the unpleasant position of having to wait even longer than I wanted for the continuation.

DNF 10%

If you enjoy reading about polyamory and the internal balancing of relationships then this book may be for you. The large majority of the start of the novel is just that, although it is unrealistic in the extreme. Sean is the only male in the group and he is perfect in every way, including his overweening modesty. No woman could possibly feel worthy in his presence, much less be up to marrying him.

I didn't give it one star because my dissatisfaction is subjective. I'm sure there is an audience for this style of story... but I'm not it.

Too much of a good thing

Four's company, nine's a crowd. Andrea, Chastity, Lilly, Felora - they are just unnecessary. Aria is at least interesting. This book jumped the shark from interesting harem to quantity over quality.

I do very much appreciate that MC comes off as a decent and considerate lover, and that he's happy to have his wives forming romantic relationships between each other. That balances the relationships to a degree. But there are just too many to take seriously at this point.

Things are finally starting to get interesting in volume 5. Denmur's rival organization is starting to elevate their harassment of Forged Bonds beyond simple meddling (and the occasional assassination attempt). Sean finally puts some effort into increasing his abilities (though why he doesn't try to actively seek out and poach every skill and talent possible, I'll never understand). The wife recruitment drive continues and he is adding wives like its going out of style. Book ended on a high note, so looking forward to next volume.

Awesome as always

A real page turner, I couldn’t put it down from beginning to end just like all Daniels books another great series to read and keep, even though I have Amazon’s unlimited and support him on patreon I still buy every book he writes as excellent authors need supporting, only downside is he needs to finish his other ongoing series so I can buy the next book in this series.
