Agustina de Aragón

Rate this book
Her story is so much more than a tale of war, tremendous courage, and loss. It is one of the greatest love stories in history. Based upon a true Spanish heroine.

Barcelona, Spain, 1803. Agustina Saragossa, the youngest daughter of a bladesmith, sneaks around the military barracks, yet not to snag a husband as everyone thinks. Stubborn, hot-tempered and fiercely devoted to her country, like her grandfather before her, she is far more interested in learning about the ensuing war between Britain and France than she is in the lazy, arrogant Spanish soldiers at the compound.

When Sergeant Juan Roca, a handsome officer with a troubled past, is relocated to the barracks, he is instantly struck by Agustina’s beauty and fiery spirit. Despite her heated rejections and open mistrust, he continues to pursue her relentlessly. Will he ever win her heart?

As the war progresses between their neighboring countries, Napoleon Bonaparte deviously orders the invasion of Spain, thinking it will be an easy task. Yet, Agustina and Juan join the fight, first as guerillas, then as soldiers in their valiant effort to crush the enemy and regain the freedom of their country.

Gail Meath brings a legend to life in this beautiful historical romance/thriller based on the life of Agustina Raimunda Maria Saragossa, or Agustina de Aragón, also known as "The Spanish Joan of Arc." We learn the true story of Agustina’s heroic acts during the First Siege of Zaragosa, her life as a soldier and prisoner, and her romance with her beloved Juan Roca. Set in Barcelona and then Zaragosa, and other points in Spain, we meet Agustina as a girl and then follow her into womanhood, motherhood, and war.

The author’s meticulous research into the life and customs of early 1800s Spain is obvious, as Agustina’s world comes alive. The reader will feel as if they are there, visiting the marketplace and working alongside Agustina in her father’s bladesmith shop. The love story between Agustina and Roca is very well done, and their passion and dedication to each other are painted across every page.

When danger arrives in the form of the Napoleon-led French Army, we can see the bloody battles and the savagery of the enemy, as well as the bravery of the Spanish people, as they fight off onslaught after onslaught. The terrible price of war is shown again and again, and the reader will weep along with Agustina as she faces unspeakable loss. The author’s knowledge of the topic is impressive, and I learned so much about Napoleon’s attacks on and eventual takeover of Spain. Although Agustina is famous for her acts during the First Siege of Zaragosa, she was also a mother, soldier, and prisoner of war, and it all comes alive in this novel. The ending is absolutely intriguing, and not to be missed.

I require two things from historical fiction. The first is that I be transported to the time and place being described. There is no question I felt transported to marketplaces, battlefields, and even prison in this fantastic novel. The second is that I learn something, and this book introduced me to Agustina herself, and then taught me much about the Napoleonic wars.

Agustina De Aragón introduces us to a compelling real-life legend, takes us into her world, and shows us the realities of war. It is a must read for fans of strong female characters. If you have never heard of Agustina, this book will introduce you in an unforgettable way.

Thanks booksirens! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A emotinal and true story of a courageous woman that fought for her country and her lover. The first part tells her love story with the sargent Roca, and what a wonderful relationship these two have. The second and thrid focus in the war, we fell the sacrifices that both have to do and her militar achievements.

Agustina Sargossa was a spanish heroin that defended Spain for the Napolean wars. Agustina began fighting for the Allied forces as Wellington's only female officer and eventually rose to the rank of captain. According to some sources, on June 21, 1813, she served as a front-line battery commander at the Battle of Victoria under Major Cairncross.

I am glad that this book enabled me to know a great woman. More people need to know her story, and understand that even in other times existed woman not afraid to take up arms.

Another beautiful historical novel. So well written. It captures perfectly, courage and resilience.
I couldn’t find better words to describe it, than Gail’s words: “A dynamic and heartfelt story based upon true events that takes place during one of the most devastating wars in Europe. It captures the strength of unity and family and is known as one of the most powerful love stories in history.”
And the end is a lovely addition not to be missed. Read and discover Agustina, this great lady!

“Agustina de Aragon” introduces the title character, Agustina Saragossa, in the early 1800s Barcelona, Spain. Agustina is a fierce and loyal young woman turning eighteen. Her sister’s getting married, but she’s not interested in such things. She’s focused on being a good daughter, living with her overbearing mother and adoring father, until she meets Juan Roca.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel based on the life of a real life heroine. It was just so romantic! The love between Juan and Agustina jumped off the pages and his little tokens for her were adorable. I also really enjoyed Agustina’s relationship with her father. It was much more subtle than the main love story, but also very sweet. Agustina’s love for her family and her country ultimately set the tone for this story... I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

Set during the Napoleonic wars, this is a love story like no other. Based on a true story, Meath tells the tale of Agustina, a blade smith's daughter who dares to take on Napoleon's army for her beloved Spain. By her side is Juan, the man who pursues her love with a vengeance until she loves him back. Meath doesn't shy away from the brutality of war nor the personal losses Augustina and Juan make to set Spain free. Beautifully written, Meath makes history come alive. Between her extensive research coupled with her sense of romance, Meath delivers a more than satisfying read.

have to admit that what first drew me to this book was the stunning cover. There was just so much passion between the two central figures that I couldn’t resist finding out who they were supposed to be. Their stance and the vibrance of their costumes reminded me a bit of flamenco, a famous Spanish dance I was lucky enough to see in Seville while visiting the region. After finishing the story I can safely say that the cover “Agustina de Aragon” is a perfect match for its plot. At its heart this is the story of one woman’s passion for her country and her family.

I had never heard of Agustina Saragossa prior to picking up this book, but she was famous enough to catch the attention of Lord Byron, who immortalized her in his “Child Harold’s Pilgrimage”. The Agustina of this novel, much like in real life, is a fiery character. Unlike what is expected of the women of her time she is not content to sit idly at home. Agustina is fiercely interested in the current political state of her country. She loves Spain and would often hang around the army barracks to learn the latest developments both at home and abroad. That is how Agustina ends up meeting the other great love of her life, Juan Roca.

Agustina seems to be a woman who can only love with her whole heart. I really enjoyed seeing passion spark between Juan and Agustina. Throughout the novel the reader sees these two united by a desire to do everything in their power to save their country from Napoleon. At the same time, there are numerous scenes that showcase how far they are willing to go to ensure each others’ safety. As a reader I spent most of the book hoping for a happy ending for the two. That’s why I found the finale perfect, even if it may not be exactly historically accurate.

Though I greatly enjoyed this book, I sometimes found myself wishing there were less detailed discussion of military matters. I understand why they were likely important, but I’m not sure they did much for the plot and were just not to my taste. The pacing also took some getting used to as there was a lot of jumping around in terms of years making it sometimes hard to keep track of the age of the characters and where they were in the story.

Overall, I give this book a 4 out of 5. I greatly enjoyed learning about Agustina’s life and adventures. If you like learning about significant, but less well known historical figures or just want to pick up a good book set in Spain then I recommend giving this book a try.

I received an advance review copy for free, and im writing this honest review voluntarily. Thankyou Gail for the opportunity.

What a beautiful story of love , courage and war. I was immediately taken in by the intrigue and mystery of the barefoot lady with the "gaudy" jewellery draped on her neck. This book has everything, mystery, action, suspense, heartbreak and love. Being my first read by this author, I was unsure what to expect. While historical fiction is my go to genre, I don't usually read ones set so far back in time(this set in early 1800's) but I found the language written in this was still given its full meaning and portrayal as well as being able to understand the events happening from a modem understanding. I loved this book and read it in 2 sittings.

Agustina de Aragón by Gail Meath merges Spanish history with romance, bringing a story that stirs your heart. Agustina was a strong and opinionated young woman when Sergeant Juan Roca first met her, while throwing her shoe at another soldier. The soldiers all thought she hung out at the barracks to find a husband, but that was the furthest from the truth. Her loyalty and devotion to Spain kept her vigilante and watchful as France and Britain danced around a war that would pull Spain into its web. Juan’s persistence and attention to detail wins Agustina over, which begins a flaming romance that survives war, separation, and the greatest sacrifice that almost destroyed them.

I love how Gail Meath writes fictional novels about scarcely known characters that accomplish brilliant feats in history. Agustina de Aragón brings a dark time in Spain’s history as Napoleon Bonaparte walks all over the Spanish people as part of his plan to dominate. Agustina played a principal part in the Peninsular War, when she picked up the torch to fire point plank at the French. Her spunk and bravery revived her people to fight back, renewing their spirit. The characters ruled the pages of this novel, just as they did in history. With an edgy precision, Gail Meath applies elements of a remarkable historical fiction: an interesting plot, courageous characters, danger, and excellent writing. The writing leaves you feeling raw as Agustina and Juan fight against incredible odds. I could not put this novel down and I cried in various places knowing many of the details surrounding the characters actually happened.

An endearing love story based on true events during the 1800s when the French led by Napoleon invaded Spain. The well researched backdrop of war is devastating and tragic. However, the bond between Agustina and Juan as together they fight to free their beloved Spain adds a human, uplifting spirit. I highly recommend reading about this amazing, strong-willed, no nonsense heroine.

This book ended with me crying tears & a serene feeling.

If you're looking for a historical romance which is loving but not full of only romance, then this is it. Spreading for a long time period, this novel focuses on love, loss, rage, determination & will to fight for one's country.

The initial 50% of the book has more romantic aspects but the end 50% has more insights to the war. Roca and Rami, a.k.a Juan and Agustina have witnessed, been a part of and have undergone tons of stuff but their love never went away.

This started with a tone where Agustina didn't especially like Juan but then Juan used his charms, was persistent & won her over. While all this happened, I was smiling & was rooting for them so bad!! And the part where Juan stole the floral pin?!! PERFECT HEART MELTING MOMENT.

As the story progressed, the rumours of a France attacking Spain increased & eventually years of battles took place.

During these years, we see a supporting husband, two fearless leaders, two people who've loved, seperated & lost. These years tested them and this couple achieved marks way higher than what could be given.

I can't tell much without giving away the story, but this book is definitely changing my views of historical romance.

4.5⭐
(Sometimes the insights to the war and planning felt a bit stretched.)

Agustina‘s daily life include spying on the soldiers and listening to anything she deems important. This also may include arguing with the men and on occasion throwing her shoes at them, this is what she is doing when she meets the sergeant a good looking man who Agustina wasn’t prepared for at all. While she frets over whether Spain will get brought into this potential war between France and Britain, she starts to feel things for the sergeant she wasn’t prepared for. This is just a brief summary of the book and trust me when I say the author has packed it with goodness. I love this authors books and must say each one is a historical romance and she definitely gets the historical details down. It really is a pet peeve of mine when authors called their book historical, yet give the character of 21st century opinions. That is just one reason why I love her books and highly recommend them especially Agustina the Aragon. Just make sure you have time to read the book, because after she meets the sergeant I found it hard to put down. Not to mention they have a few LOL moments but mostly it is just a great book with good riding in an awesome plot. I’m going to stop because I could go on and on about this book. I received this book from Books sirens and I am leaving this review totally voluntarily.

A Brilliantly told true story from a long-ago time and a long-ago war. This story starts us off in 1803 and takes us on a journey of love and discovery, and loss. It is told in a beautiful, poetic voice by Gail Meath. A woman that is lost in history to many comes alive in this novel I have no regrets about reading. IF only all of history could be told to us in such rich detail. The research that the author had to dive into so this novel could be released without one little historical mistake is awe-inspiring.
At its core, this is a biography of Agustina Raimunda Maria Saragossa, or Agustina de Aragón, also known as "The Spanish Joan of Arc." About halfway through the war and battles, I realized this novel takes place at the same time as "War and Peace" I became doubly invested. I love History and discovering a novel like this by Gail Meath, lets me boiling the facts down to the people that lived, fought, survived, or perished. It wasn't just an era, it was a generation with tales to pass down. Tales of love, loss, motherhood, and moving on, though the burdens of war never go away.
Phenomenal 5 stars to this author and her subject matter, Agustina de Aragon.

This is a very good book. It is well written with good character development. I really liked the characters and the interesting story, except for the violence near the end (but that is the nature of a story set during a war). I didn't know much about this time and place in history. Though it was very sad to see what the people had to go through, Agustina's family was very blessed. It was such a wonderful love story. I also really liked the end of the story.

Rami was determined not to like this soldier. But it seemed he was in the same places she was. Rami is strong willed, determined and passionate about her country, Spain. Roca is the same except he handles issues calmer than the fiery beauty he calls his sphynx. They have a love for each other that no one could break. They fight together in the war against the French to save their beloved Spain. Follow them as they fight battles, through personal tragedies and love each other.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with the copy of this book.

Agustina de Aragon by Gail Meath tells the story of a young heroine who fought fiercely during the Napoleon invasion in Spain. Agustina, or Rami, is a fiery and courageous spirit of Spain who refused to let a foreign invader take away her home and freedom.
This is a story poorly known in history, but it's one of the greatest ones. The courage, the passion, the love, the sacrifice all culminate in a great victory and even greater legend.
Meath's version of the story let's a mother narrate to her daughter a tale of a barefoot old lady that carries brooches and necklaces on her with the greatest pride while strolling around town. This way of narration made the whole story more nostalgic and heartwarming with the end being so unexpected to young Lucia who was listening to this story together with us. I say together with us because that's precisely how it felt to read this book. Like you're seated next to that mother listening to the story first-hand, all while watching Rami walk past your window.
It was such a pleasure and a joy to read this book and I would love to recommend it to others. Any fan of historical fiction and biographies that is especially fascinated with Spanish history will absolutely enjoy this book.

My Recommendation
This beautiful story of love, courage, heroism and survival left me stunned. The passion between Agustina or Rami and Juan is eternal and all encompassing. surviving war, loss of their child and heroic ongoing defense of Spain against Bonaparte's invasion. My mother was born in the Basque country and often told me of this bloody period of French aggression and massacre of civilians along with soldiers but I never knew about this wonderful heroine of these wars. The novel was a revelation to me and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The ending was glorious with the routing out of Napoleon's forces and the happy reunion of Rami and Juan and their subsequent happy life together with the addition of several other children. My thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for allowing me the pleasure of reading this masterpiece.

GaiI Meath was asked by one reader what inspired her to write the life of Agustina, and she thought others might be curious. She explained to her that she loves writing about little-known or ‘lost’ heroines in history, and having a lifelong best friend with Spanish roots, she discovered Agustina’s story and fell in love with her. She wrote it as a tribute to her friend. Interestingly, after publishing the book, she also befriended someone who lives in Zaragoza, Spain, and he commended her for bringing Agustina's story back into the spotlight. Gail says "It’s been a wonderful experience all around."

Agustina de Aragon WAS a real person. Wikipedia describes her as such:

"Agustina Raimunda Maria Saragossa i Domènech or Agustina of Aragón (March 4, 1786 – May 29, 1857) was a Spanish heroine who defended Spain during the Peninsular War, first as a civilian and later as a professional officer in the Spanish Army. Known as "the Spanish Joan of Arc," she has been the subject of much folklore, mythology, and artwork, including sketches by Francisco Goya and the poetry of Lord Byron."

Agustina and her love for Roca, her husband, defies reality; how could two people love each other this much? I will not remain skeptical, though. That love got them both through danger and heartache.

Well written, Gail. Thanks you for sharing this beautiful story.

Really enjoyed this book that fits so well into the ongoing movement to remind the world that women can achieve what men can, if only given the chance. The love scenes aren’t graphic, so almost any age could read this & be inspired.

I liked the in depth descriptions of the politics, strategies, & battles of wartime Spain, but some readers may find it takes up too much of the story. I usually find that my favorite historical romances help me learn something new about the era.

At times the story felt a little rushed to me, but maybe that fits with the chaos of war. Thought the story w/in a story was clever, & two thumbs up for the ending!

I had never read a book by this writer before, but I am deeply impressed with how she takes you into a time and a war I knew nothing about.

Augustina's story is one of courage, the power of a woman, the power of love. It is one of pain, loss, fear and victory.
It's a love story based on a strong woman in the 1800s who fought in a war. Display particularly beautifully

This is a fascinating book! I went into it knowing very little about the Napoleonic wars, and absolutely nothing about Augustina de Aragon. This story about Augustina fighting in the war right next to her husband and then as a guerilla fighter is so full of wonderful research and detail. Many times while reading, I felt myself getting caught up in the action. I loved discovering this strong, committed, determined woman in history. It made me want to research her and find out more about her.

The love story, too, between Augustina and her husband is lovely. I truly think this is one I could read again and enjoy just as much the second time around. If you like books about history, and particularly books about strong, influential women in history, I highly recommend this book.

Thank you NetGalley and Gail Meath for an advanced copy.

A beautifully written historical love story of war, heartbreak and perseverance.

Agustina de Aragon was a true warrior in 1808. She ran forward, loaded a cannon and lit the fuse, shredding a wave of attackers at point blank range. Agustina, became a Spanish heroine who defended Spain during the Peninsular War, first as a civilian and later as a professional officer in the Spanish Army. She was known as "the Spanish Joan of Arc". She was well loved and respected by all.

Gail Meath, does an amazing job by bringing Agustina back to life in the pages of her novel. She shows the true passion, commitment, and love not only to her beloved Spain, but to her family. Agustina's life was not an easy one, during heartbreak, she found the courage to fight not only her own demons but the French invaders.

A truly remarkable woman that made history!
