It was not my plan to fall in love with a member of the bloodsucking elite, least of all the President's son.
Neither was going to Washington D.C. to stop my home from being razed to the ground, but being homeless would wreck my college plans. We pay our blood taxes, but the vamps always take more. Welp. Time to face my fear of politics.
It was supposed to be simple. Make my case and go home. But my temper got the best of me and now I’m on a young activists' panel, surrounded by entitled, immortal politicians.
Among them? Jeremy Haywood, the insufferable son of the President. Can this get any worse?
Of course it can. The vampires have a plan for me and the other activists. I'm on trial.
If I leave, I'll forfeit the lives of my family.
Now there's only one possible escape. Jeremy. He just might help me survive what's coming, but I have to trust him and dive even deeper into the vampires' dangerous world. And I might pay with my blood.
But that part is easy compared to the battle taking place in my heart.
Presidential Vampire: First Sun is the first book of the Presidential Vampire series. It is an upper Young Adult vampire romance with urban fantasy and thriller elements, and a new take on vampire royalty. Rest assured, there are no references to real-life political parties, modern figures, or current events, though some strong language is present.
Holly Hook is the author of the Destroyers Series, which consists of five young adult books about teens who are walking disasters...literally. She is also the author of the Rita Morse series, a young adult fantasy series still in progress, and After These Messages, a short ya comedy. Currently she is writing Twisted, a spin-off of the Destroyers Series due out in December. When not writing, she enjoys reading books for teens, especially ya fantasy and paranormal series with a unique twist.
The slow burn is good. I like the action. Ember is feisty and I love how she loves her family. Jeremy is definitely a charmer. It's very sweet around. Its very enjoyable.
This is a story about activism with a paranormal twist. Ember’s family home is threatened by a big development company who buys up affordable housing and turns it into condos thus displacing the middle/ lower income families. She goes on a trip to Washington DC where the government is controlled by vampires. The group she’s with makes speeches and she and her new friend are chosen for a new group of young people to try and influence policy makers. There is a great deal of animosity between the vampires aka the haves and the humans aka the have nots. Nothing is exactly as it seems. Especially the dangerously handsome and enigmatic president’s son Jeremy. A bit of a slow start. While activism is important and the issue predominantly represented here affordable housing is doubly so there’s a lot of exposition that makes the story drag. Picks up in intensity and action around chapter ten or thereabouts. From then on it’s an intense ride. All the political intrigue of a thriller with the bonus paranormal elements of vampires. I enjoyed the relationships between Ember and her friend, and Ember and Jeremy. The latter filled with complexities that will make you wonder just where they truly stand right through to the end. Ember is a bit heavy on the angst of a teenager which at times is a bit off putting but overall she’s a compelling lead character. Once the action started to pick up this story was really captivating. I very much enjoyed the vampires as evil politicians and humans as rebels against the corrupt setting. I think bringing to life an important issue of affordable housing is a great cause for Ember to fight for and thus get herself involved in the conflict. My issue is that in the beginning it feels less like I’m being invited into a story with characters that I want to follow and more like I’m being dragged into a political protest unwillingly. Again this is a hugely important issue especially in these unprecedented times but when I pick up a book I want a diversion from the troubles of the day not to be further overwhelmed by them. I think if the start of this book has a bit more balance between the real life cause and the fantasy of vampire politics that comes into play later on it will be very successful. I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
Her name is Ember Vonk, and she is fresh out of high school. She has come to Washington, D.C., because a large corporation is threatening to buy her parent’s house and build condos, thus displacing her and her family and ruining her hopes of going to college. She is a human here in the capital, vampire central, a human who pays her taxes every quarter via a mandatory blood donation as humans have done since the inception of the nation. She is here to lobby both the vampire and human lawmakers for the government to stop giving cheap loans to large, greedy corporations. There is also a month-long internship that the activists are invited to, with all things paid for by the government. But what they don’t know about the program will quite literally kill them.
WOW! A verse where vampires are out and part of society and are leaders of a nation. Oh, how much fun you could have with this reality. The character’s interaction is believable. The character’s history and current circumstances drive the motivations of this story. The physical world-building gives you enough information to envision a generic interior and real-life locations in the area of Washington, D.C.
The author, Holly Hook, has definitely given us readers a different universe or reality to experience. I give this imagination five stars out of five stars.
I have read books by this author before and have always adored her books! This one was the best one yet! Omg I absolutely adored this book and I could not stop reading ... Its so addictive!!!
The characters in this book were so compelling and the kind of characters that you just want to know more about! When I first read Jeremy's character I really wasnt a fan but the more that I read about character the more I realised how trapped he is and that he is just trying to survive any way that he can! I adored Ember! Her personality is just like her name with her inner fire and temper! You can also see her grow and evolve throughout the book.
The storyline blew me away honestly and it was nothing like I expected when I started this book. This is a quality that this author always has that I love.
I can't recommend this book highly enough and its well worth the 5*
Presidential Vampire : First Sun is the first book in this new serie by Holly Hook.
She didn't plan to fall in love with a bloodsucker, neither that this one would be the son of the President. And going to Washington DC wasn't part of her plan. But since her home will probably be razed to the ground, she will need to face her fear and face the politic. Her temper get the best of her and now she's on a young activists' panel, surrounded by entitled, immortal politicians. Among them? Jeremy Haywood, the insufferable son of the President. This sure coudn't get worse.
The vampire have other plans and if she wants to survive she's going to need to rely on Jeremy.
I have received an arc of this book and cannot wait to read whats to come next!
Presidential Vampire: First Sun is a very interesting take on vampires in the modern world and if they were to have a more leading role in that world. The main character Ember is a human who just wants to protect her family. She goes to D.C. to fight for her home, but along the way she gets pulled into more than she bargained for, especially when it comes to the President's son Jeremy who happens to be a vampire. I'm intrigued by this first book and I can't wait to see where this series leads.
Holly Hook is one of my favorite Authors. However, I was honestly not sure if I was going to enjoy this one as I do not enjoy reading politics. I was very much surprised but how much I did enjoy it. I was slow getting into it, because a lot of the political aspects are explained in the beginning which are essential to the story. Then I was caught up like s spider in a web and had to find out what happens next and there is a lot happening. I look forward to the next book.
Presidential Vampire: First Sun [Presidential Vampire, Book One](An Upper YA Paranormal Dystopian Romance) by Holly Hook is a wonderful story to read. This is book number one in this wonderful series that I can not get enough of. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about vampires, dystopian, YA and Paranormal romance.
I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
This paranormal romance is super fun and unique. I loved how there is some parallels to the current state of politics, but it never dives in. It features an awesome heroine who is a huge activist and our vampire hero. The romance is just awesome and nice. I loved the kissing scenes. There is a lot of unexpected twists and turns, but it is super fun. The cliffy is huge, but can't wait for the next novel.
ARC received. This is a cool combination of vampires & politics. I loved how it parallels so much of what is going on in the US right now. Ember, a human who’s recruited to go lobby in DC finds out the hard way just how far behind the eight ball she truly is. There’s lots of action, suspense, a little romance, & of course corruption. Really great book
Ember is in love with Jeremy Haywood, so that causes some problems already for her.
Holly Hook did a great job writing this exciting vampire romance with urban fantasy and thriller elements. It was one of her longer book, but it was worth the read where you want to keep going until the end.
This book kept you on your toes and holding your breath. Vampires rule and humans are beneath them. Only the strong will prevail. There’s romance with a twist, lots of political backstabbing and surprises galore. I didn’t want to put it down! Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Holly Hook is one of my favorite authors but i was skeptical about a book involving politics but I'm so glad i read it. Full of twists and turns and love and revenge i was hooked by the 3rd page. Can't wait for the next one.
This new series is good but demands you conform to become one of the “chosen” - Turned to vampire, dead to family and old friends. But most importantly you strive to reach the top of political power! A fun twisted read , can’t wait for the next one!
