Plagued by a curse that will soon claim his life, the human-hating King Elliot will do anything to save himself. And if Gemma can use that to her advantage, she might be able to bargain her way to freedom. All she has to do is help him break his curse.

There’s just one hitch—to do so, they’ll have to trick someone into falling in love with the beastly, brooding Elliot.

With a devious alliance made, their scheme begins, bringing Gemma and Elliot into very close quarters. Soon, an unexpected desire stirs where once there was only hate. But Gemma must fight it. For when the curse is broken, Elliot will return to his true form—a wolf—and be lost to her for good.

5/5⭐️

I honestly do not understand why the average rating of this book isn’t above 4 stars… IT’S LITERALLY SO FREAKING GOOD!!! To be fair, I did not expect to like it this much but I was proven WRONG!!!

This book made me feel so many different things all at once! Longing, anxiety, butterflies, heartache and sooooo much more!! It was literally so freaking good and as of right now one of my favourite Beauty and the Beast retellings ever!

It just gave of all of the right vibes! It was magical and whimsical while being so freaking romantic, I absolutely loved every minute of reading this book!! It was literally the perfect combination of romance and fantasy! If you love a VERY romance heavy fantasy book then this is the one for you!! Like.. the amount of butterflies and heart-flutters this book gave me was insaneeeee!!

Gemma and Elliot absolutely own my heart! The chemistry these two had was just unmatched!! The tension, the mutual pining and the banter!!! Ugh.. It was to DIE for!!
And the way Elliot was so unironically funny made it even better! The lines he said (which were actually serious on his behalf) had me cackling and giggling my ass off! He was just so hilarious without even trying and it made me actually fall in love with him!!

Also the things he freaking thinks and says about Gemma?!?! She makes him feel alive for the first time EVER?!?! What he feels for her is the same way he feels while reading a book?!?! He feels most safe and comfortable around her???
God this man made my heart beat a millions miles per hour… I don’t even wanna know how my girl Gemma was feeling!

But not only Elliot… THE THINGS GEMMA DID FOR HIM?!?! Freaking sacrificing herself for him! Willing to give her love towards him up FOR him!! Coming back to him!!! STARTING TO PREFER WINTER OVER ANY OTHER SEASON (iykyk)!!!!! These two are just so perfect for one another… my heart can’t take it.

And like already mentioned, the banter between these two was just so funny and adorable at the same time! And the indirect flirting with one another while also teasing each other was just so freaking cute, I was melting!! They’re just so well written and the pacing was soooo good! I’m starting to love slow burn more and more, the more I read it and these two were SOOO freaking slow but in such a GOOOOOOD way!!! And when it slowly but surely started to burn… ohhhh did it burn GOOD!!!
Just absolute perfection if you ask me!

Besides that, the plot was also soooo nicely done! While it had the original Beauty and the Beast vibe to it, it was also so much more than that and it was so well executed that it made me enjoy this book a lot more than I expected I would do!
Also the original Disney movie references were to die for! I love when authors include them in their retellings. Makes the story even better than it already was!!

Overall, I enjoyed this book so freaking much and am kind of mad that I skipped it when I first discovered this series. Let’s just say… don’t judge a book by its goodreads ratings lmao..
It’s just too good to be true and I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good beauty and the beast retelling!

This book has now become one of my comfort reads and I love how much solace it brings me.

Curse of the Wolf King is a Beauty and the Beast retelling that co-existed in a fae world and I have read plenty of it to know that they could be quite unceasingly intense. However, I love how this book offers me a totally different feeling, given the humour and light tone through the characters.

Desperate for independence, Gemma accepted a job offer at thirty-three Whitespruce Lane not knowing what was ahead of her.

"Seeing me in such a state... I'm sure your heart is warm, yes? You must feeling very much in debt to me now. Your gratitude sweels so overwhelmingly large that you want to sacrifice something? Your greatest treasure, perhaps?"

"Don't just stand there. My leg. Oh, my poor leg"

First of all, that was funnily dramatic. When Gemma first came for the job, she was met with a group of wolves that wanted to attack her, just like how Mrs. Aston warned her before... Only to be baffled at the trickery by the Unseelie King of the Winter Court.

She then negotiated to be the house steward in return to help the wolf king trick someone into falling in love with him. And while helping scheming to break the curse, *surprise, surprise* Gemma find herself in an unexpected feelings towards the wolf king.

What I love about this book is definitely: i) the characters
I feel like the first time Gemma encountered Elliot really leaves a deep impression to me. The acting with the whole tomato sauce was so funny and desperate, I fell in love with Elliot immediately. And even when none of these characters are perfect, I love seeing the two characters put past their differences and needs for each other despite their stuggles.

I was just a bit disappointed with the lack of appearance from the side characters. I wished the author would accentuate Blackbeard, Gray or Micah in the book more just so the relationship between the characters would feel way raw and realistic.

In terms of the; ii) the story line :
This book has the same plot as any other Beauty and the Beast retelling with it's own twist and touch. It offers readers with some slow burn romance that would still make you want to continue further as you read. I love how homey the total atmosphere feels in this book. Maybe it has to do with the weather that makes me feel joy, warm and nostalgic.

Although the world-building here might be a bit solitaire in nature because it only focuses on the Winter Court when there are few other courts existing, but I believe that would be for another stories in the series. So, I find it acceptable and it actually made me more excited to discover the rest of the books (and hopefully it would be as enjoyable as this one).

iii) The romance
Honestly, the romance in this book is not as well done if I have to say. It was very slow and there could be more development to the couple but they really just go as far as talking and open up to each other before confessing their feelings... but I still like it as it is. Maybe that's what makes this book a light and fun read.

Even with some details in their romantic scene, I like how the wolf king is to be the "inexperienced" one despite the brooding and dominant character. That feels like a nice change in the characters where the woman is more "skilled" undeterred by the male superiority narrative. Elliot is such an understanding and gentle person in defiance of his rough demeanour and that was part of their dynamic that I enjoyed the most.

On the whole, it seems like this book could have been better but I always put my feelings post-reading to decide if I eventually love the book or not. And Curse of the Wolf King gives me some sense of ease that I rarely have on books I read. This book has officially become the second entry to my comfort books list and that says a lot.

Genre: Fantasy, romance
Tropes: Beauty and the Beast retelling, brooding×sunshine, humans and fae, slow burn, making a bargain, breaking a curse
Series: Entangled with Fae #1
Cliffhanger: No
Rating: 4.25 ⭐
Spice: 0.5/5 🌶
Set in the same world as: The Fair Isle Trilogy

I've read it in one go. It's super catchy and easy to read, with sweet and funny moments, a good plotline and a happy ending. It's set in the same world as The Fair Isle Trilogy, the action happening 21 years later and it is the first novel in Entangled with Fae, a series of stand-alones with crossovers between characters and happy endings.

Credit and more Gemma and Eliot aesthetic here

》》The Plot《《

Gemma lives with her father and sister in the newly constructed town, Vernon, placed in the Winter Court. Having moved from the continent to escape a scandal linked to her name, all Gemma wants is to read book, avoid people (especially men) and get a job to win her own money and financial stability. So when she's kidnapped by a trickster fae on her way to a job interview, the only way out is to create a bargain; she will help Eliot, the Unseelie King of Winter break his curse by making a human girl fall in love with him and she, in return, will receive her freedom and enough money to start a new life.

"Besides, I’m probably the closest thing you have to a shot at breaking this curse. Kill me if you want, but if this curse is meant to claim your life at the end of your sentence, then I’ll see you in hell in three months’ time.”

The novel is written from Gemma's POV, it has fast-paced action and enjoyable characters and I really liked all the parallels between this and the original story.

》》Characters and Relationships《《

🌹 Gemma Bellefleur

"This is who I am. I read romance novels, I speak my mind, and I have no patience for gossip."

She's a real smart woman and I loved that about her. She loved reading romance, even if she no longer believed in love, she was stubborn and refuse to let society dictate what she should be and how she should behave and she had a very nice character.

🐺 Eliot Rochester

“Elliot Rochester, was that…humor coming from your lips?”
“Certainly not. All I do is brood.” His mouth curls into a sly grin.

He's more of a cinnamonroll than you can guess. He can go all Unseelie King on his enemies, but he's definitely enough of a cinnamonroll when it comes to Gemma. And he's a feminist and he doesn't even know it.

🌹🐺 Gemma and Elliot

“How can you not see, Gemma?”
My body trembles from head to toe, a lump rising in my throat. “See what?”
“How can you not see what you do to me? You make me feel the way books do. Things I never had to feel as a wolf. Things I’ve only begun to feel since I met you.”

Their relationship was fun, slow burn and sort of sweet with everything going on. I would've liked some chapters from Elliot's POV.

👩🏼 Imogen Coleman

I won't even bother to write too much about her because there isn't one good thing I could say about her. Insufferable and, unfortunately, we'll see enough of her in the next book as well, just to be thoroughly convinced she's horrible.

🧑🏻 Gavin Aston

“Like I said, I can carry my own books.”
“Then perhaps you can allow me to carry conversation instead? I daresay I’ll find few others in town with intelligence to match mine.”

Firstly, have you noticed how the initial of his first name and his surname spell out "Gaston" like the original character!? I had this epiphany towards the end of the book. Shame on me, I know.
Anyway, I was expecting to hate him, which, surprisingly, I didn't. He was annoying, yes, definitely an entitled white male, but not spiteful. He could appreciate Gemma's intelligence which is something not many men (who aren't the hero) usually do.

》》Favorite Scenes《《

🌹Gemma trying to avoid Gavin at the bookshop
🐺 The big white wolf being not so subtle about what he wants
🤝 The bargain

“Precisely. Love is that which makes humans absolute fools while making them equally and irrationally attached to another person. You were right when you said you needed to entice the sacrifice during feelings of great impulse. That’s exactly what love does. It turns people into reckless idiots, both blind to reason and ignorant of their own folly, even as it stares them in the eyes.”
“You sound like someone with personal experience.”

🍀👗Foxglove and Amelie making an appearance
🌹🐺 Gemma teaching Eliot about rakes and gentlemen
🍽 The dinner party
❄ Gemma, Ember, Micha and the kids having a snowfight
🌹🐺 Gemma and Eliot dancing at the ball

“You cannot tell me what I saw was nothing. I saw the way he looked at you. The way you looked at him. Anyone with eyes and a brain could see.”
I scoff. “So very few.”

🐺 Elliot's love declaration
🌠 Nyxia making an appearance

》》Conclusion《《

"Do not try to tell me, yet again, that love still exists. I’ve seen both its pleasures and its demise, and I want none of it ever again."

It was a great retelling and it's nice to have something light and happy, with good plot and well written characters. I liked how it introduced Ember and set the scene for the second book: Heart of the Raven Prince (which will be a Cinderella retelling about Franco), without leaving us with a cliffhanger.
I thoroughly recommend this if you've enjoyed The Fair Isle trilogy, if you are in the mood for a smart retelling or if you are simply looking for a romantic fantasy.

"Books give me experiences I shouldn’t have, emotions that aren’t my own. They spell out words that manage to draw tears from my eyes, twist my heart, even though nothing is physically happening to me. It’s a human sorcery I don’t care to mess with.”

This book would be MUCH better if the protagonist wasn't a freaking pain in the ass

I swear the next time I read a book and the protagonist likes books, and no, not like a normal person, she is special, she is not like other girls, you don't understand it, she loves reading..., I'm gonna throw myself into the sea.
...but she is supposed to be Belle from Beauty and the beast, that's why she... shhhh, I really do not care.

I usually love me some "society doesn't deem me good enough" in my fantasy protagonist, but good god it doesn't work in this book. Also, because she is such an outcast, she basically antagonizes every single person, and it just gave me weird vibes, it was a case of "If I knew this person I just know I would not like her".
Furthermore, she is very freaking selfish, from start to finish every action she does is to benefit only herself, even when she supposedly "loves someone". Are you actually gonna tell me you love this man, that you KNOW is gonna either die or suffer greatly from a curse in less than a week, and you don't even care? I know you had a fight, but don't you even want to be there to know if the love of your life survives? And don't get me started on her NOT EVEN ONCE thinking about ending the curse herself...

Whatever, I gave it 3 stars because it is entertaining enough if you want a quick read, but god I'm really tempted to downgrade it to 2 stars. The insta love, bad character development, lots of secondary characters that are more furniture than actual people with personalities, info dumps that are basically reminders for readers that already read her previous books but that are absolutely uninteresting if you are a new reader..., and I could go on and on.
You know what, I'll actually give it 2 stars, sue me.

I 𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐃 this entire book in one sitting. Chapter after chapter, page after page i couldn't stop myself from eating every 𝐆𝐎𝐃𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐍 word of this amazing story.

“Please say something,” he whispers, bringing our foreheads to touch as he closes his eyes. “You don’t have to say it back. You can tell me to freeze off, if you must. Tell me to never speak of love again and I will do as you wish. I’ll marry that horrid girl and leave you in peace. Just…say anything, so long as it’s true”
]|I{•---------⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙---------•}I|[
Let's start this review with the secondary characters. Micah god that boy stole my heart every time he was in a scene. I never thought myself as a mother figure but Damn all I wanted to do was wrap that pup in a blanket and hug him with all my strength and love. Ooooh and that scene when Tiny became Jenny I think I died in that moment, my heart definitely 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐃 and then tears invaded my eyes until I couldn't see any of the words in front of me.
And Nina, oh my beautiful Nina, I myself am an only child so I don't know how it feels to have a sister/brother (at least not by blood) but Nina is 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 i would ever want in a sibling. Same goes for the wolves and their loyalty, family is so much more than blood and when you found yours it will be the best day of your life.

⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙
Imogen Ugh freezing hell. I never wanted to 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 someone as much as I did her. That b*tch deserved to be eaten by the entire pack of the winter court. Even though I did feel a smidge of guilt in the end but Fu#k, that feeling lasted all of two seconds. The girl deserved some humility and a reality check. Let that be a lesson learned... I might be enjoying her pain a little too much here. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐡 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭, 𝐢 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞.
Now her Father or the poor excuse of a father to be exact, deserve to be buried alive in his mine. That man, (ugh calling him a man is such an 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐓 to the gender, but let's go with that) is such a 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜, 𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭, 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡. 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐛𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝, him along with every 𝐆𝐎𝐃𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐍 other 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 human in that town. Oh and Gavin needs to pull his head out of his ass and grow a 𝐅#𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 pair.

]|I{•---------⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙---------•}I|[
Now what i truly loved about our Wolf King is that he wasn't an 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐝 who hated humans for being weaker beings not deserving to live or given respect. His hatred came out of a deep loss and his need for revenge. He is a proud being but not a perfect one. He is flawed and full of anger and agony but there was a 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫 in him, (one buried deep beneath all the that he was) that wanted to experience more of life than what his wolf instinct gave him. And for the first time in his long life, someone to share it with.

“There’s just so much…feeling in these books. I don’t like the way my body responds to it. I feel things I don’t feel as a wolf. Books give me experiences I shouldn’t have, emotions that aren’t my own. They spell out words that manage to draw tears from my eyes, twist my heart, even though nothing is physically happening to me. It’s a human sorcery I don’t care to mess with.”
“We feel passions driven by our instincts. But the pages in these books…” He shakes his head. “I cannot explain it, but they have a powerful effect on me.”
“That’s sort of the whole point,” I say. “That is why fiction exists. It takes us to places we’ll never go in real life, allows us to feel emotions and experiences we might not get the chance to have ourselves. It isn’t something to be afraid of. It’s a shame you don’t see fiction as the blessing it can be.”

⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙
And finally Gemma, this girl represent every book lover in the planet. Every time she describes something book related 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝. It was her perfect escape against a frigid, lying, manipulative and suffocating society. All she ever wanted was her freedom and love but after a painful betrayal she closed her heart off beneath the strongest steel door she could ever build but never in a million years could she have predicted a white wolf to be able to sneak through them without opening them.

“I frame his face with my hands, locking his eyes with mine. “You might become a monster if you lose your memories…but maybe I won’t. Maybe I can still learn to love again, even if I must lose you.”
He furrows his brow. “What do you mean?”
I give him a tremulous smile, my lower lip quivering. “I read the book about the boy and the dog. Do you remember it? At the end, the dog dies. He sacrificed himself to save the boy.”
He nods. “It’s one of the ones I told you I’d read. One that made me want to throw it clear across the room after I finished it.” He lets out a sorrowful laugh.
“I felt the same. And yet, it was a beautiful story, one that has stuck with me ever since. When we danced at the ball, and I acknowledged my feelings for you, I felt like the little boy in that story, knowing I was going to lose you. I was prepared to let you go. I knew it was for the best that you marry Imogen, even though it hurt.” He closes his eyes and presses our foreheads together.
“But I’m not the boy after all, Elliot. I’m the dog.”
He pulls back slightly, eyes wide and panicked. “Gemma—”
“Never forget, no matter where you go, that I love you, Elliot Rochester.”

This Story was amazing, i liked this new take on fae or at least its new to me, I've never read a book with that same version of fae. The courts and politics yes but usually it's about High fae or Lesser fae in their humanoid form who never really loved their inner beast. Then again with this being a Beauty/Beast Retelling it makes sense that these fae would love and be proud of their wolf or bear form. Either way i really loved the charming characters, witty dialogue, deeper message, and fast-paced action while still holding on to quality story-telling. The natural progression of Gemma and Elliot's relationship was so well done that i find myself wanting more of it. This book is the perfect lighthearted and quick read you need, it was a really unique and well executed beauty/beast inspired story.

I'm a little sad there wasn't an actual sacrifice and i know, i know the act and willingness was there and should be enough but what can I say the masochist in me needed for it to be an 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐋 sacrifice to happen. I can't help it.

I feel like I'm the only person that didn't like this book. I'm such a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast retellings, but this one was just not for me.

The protagonist, Gemma, was insufferable to me. She kept bringing up with the concept of "putting on a face" or "mask" or whatever it was (it's brought up like every page in the beginning) to blend in with the people in her town that she hates, but ends up being shitty to them anyways. Like she's just straight-up mean to everyone and everyone is insufferable in return. The charm of Belle in the Disney version is that, yeah, maybe she's weird, but she's not straight up rude to anyone that doesn't participate in her lifestyle. This book literally opens with Gemma having a tantrum because she's out of books. This book also markets itself as Bridgerton or Jane Austen inspired, but if you're into that kind of thing, it's barely there. The fae towns (in which Gemma lives in) have electricity and automobiles like it's the 20th century.

The world-building was also really confusing to me, but I don't read a ton of fae books so maybe that's just me. Like wayyyyy too much telling instead of showing going on here, and lore about the world is just randomly brought up like the author retconned it in as they were writing or in the editing process.

I liked Elliot a fair bit, but his ending felt rushed and weird. I did like how he wasn't just a pretty fae king that has the protagonist dripping upon meeting him. He had a disability that the author actually took time to include and not have it be a one-off kind of thing.

I'm sad because this book has so many good reviews and the cover is so pretty and the premise drew me in right away. I guess maybe this book works for some, but it did not work for me.

This book has a similar vibe as A Court of Thorns and Roses. Both are Beauty and the Beast retellings with a Fae twist. But given that ACOTAR is one of my favorite series I was bound to like this. But they are not the same book, this also has its own magic.

I really enjoyed how humans and fae were mixed together and the storyline that played out. I do, however, wished for more world building. I know that there’s a series that takes place in the same world before this book. Maybe that one is better in exploring the world. But at the same time, if it’s a new series it needs to be able to stand on its own.

I really liked Gemma and the stance she took in empowering women. She was rightfully mad that there was no job prospects offered to women that didn’t pay less than the jobs offered to men. That she wanted to become more than someone’s wife and property.
”Perhaps a suitor’s unwanted persistence shouldn’t be praised but condemned.”

The romance was really sweet, and I liked Elliot a lot. But I found it to be a bit lacking, I didn’t really see the emotions building. Suddenly, they were just there. But I didn’t mind it, because it felt natural and sweet.

I also found it really fun that all the swearing were related to winter, given that they were at the winter court.
”If I tell you, promise you won’t scold me or school me in the importance of feminine virtue. I’ve had enough of those conversations to last a lifetime.”
“Why the freezing hell would I give a snow troll’s ass about feminine virtue?”

I’ve had some issues previously with independent published books or books from small publishers. I found them lacking and with several issues in portrayal of female sexuality. But this was really well done in all the way. I found the writing enjoyable and the female portrayal excellent. It just a really sweet and nice book!

~4.5 stars~

I think I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of Beauty and the Beast retellings, and now fae-based books. I love the curse is handled in this retelling more than in the original. One, he admits to the curse right away. Two, he tries to use trickery to break it as he nears the end of the curse. He has three months left (though it turns out to be less).

Not to mention, he doesn't exactly imprison the damsel. I mean he does try to hold her as a hostage as she saw through his deception but ends up striking a bargain after learning that her father wouldn't trade anything to get her back.

It was easy to connect with Gemma, which I think made the book more enjoyable. It’s always a bit difficult to read a book that has a main character that you can’t relate to. I also adored Elliot; I usually don’t fall in love with romance characters very easily, let alone from the start, but he was such an intriguing character.

The plot was interesting and paced perfectly. It was easy to get lost in this book at the end of the day (and during), and I ended up ruining my sleep schedule because I was so invested in the book. I’ve been thinking about this book since I finished it, and I’ve probably already driven my dad crazy with it.

Just another refreshing beauty and beast retelling I never get tired of reading ✌ <3

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Update! Curse of the Wolf King available as an audiobook on Audible! Narrated by the amazingly talented Caitlin Davies. You can get your copy here: https://www.audible.com/pd/B099P1S1NK...

Past updates: Curse of the Wolf King releases today! What a wild and wonderful journey. I had so much fun returning to the land of Faerwyvae to start a brand new book with both new and familiar characters. Bringing Gemma's story to life and expressing my book obsession through her character was quite satisfying. And Elliot just might be my favorite book boyfriend I've written yet.

Thanks to all my amazing readers and book buddies who've supported this book! Next I'll be moving on to the second book in the Entangled with Fae series, which will be a Cinderella retelling that follows Ember's love story. And for all you Franco fans from The Fair Isle Trilogy, a certain feathered vampire prince will be getting his romance at last!

Curse of the Wolf King is free in Kindle Unlimited and is available in paperback and hardcover.

The hardcover features the following under-the-jacket artwork on the "naked book" that readers are loving.

This was a solid 4.5 🌟🌟🌟🌟⚡️and the best Beauty and the Beast retelling I've ever read
It would have been a perfect 5🌟 but for one major thing
It was in one-sided POV
and I am a firm believer that any Romance whether contemporary, fantasy, dark or Sci-Fi should never be one-sided.

Other than that, I found the story perfect in every way, simply because it twisted the things we normally know about B&B such as:
1- the overly kind, social bookish Belle who is willing to sacrifice herself always for others
2- the strong grumpy beast
3- the man's man bulky moron pursuing Belle
4- the overprotective father/family figure
5- The curse that would be broken only by declaration of true love

if you like those (which is fine of course but sometimes we just want the opposite), this book is not for you.
There are still elements from the original story (and movie), but they are so subtle that you wouldn't notice them

⚜theme: Urban Fantasy retelling
⚜tropes: Forced proximity, cursed, slow burn, found family
⚜Genre: New Adult
⚜characters: humans, shifters, fae, angels
⚜TW: mention of war and death
⚜spice: 🌶surprisingly, there was one scene
⚜ending: HEA

MAYBE THERE WILL BE SOME SPOILERS...IDK

Let's begin with our characters
Gemma is not your typical Belle (though her family name is Bellefleur..clever). Although she is bookish, she is not shy by all means. She's been bitten by society one too many times to become cordial and caring. She has no problem using others (especially those whom she despises, like Imogine ...why is every Imogine I've ever read evil????) to reach her end, but still shows compassion to the weaker characters.
She does not swoon over Elliot even when he physically transforms. their love was a slow burn
She is a "not like other girls" for the society she is living in, but I do not see her as one compared to our time. She is decisive and not afraid to go after what she wants

I've read a couple of negative reviews saying that they did not like her because she was mean and manipulative, not like Belle. They are free to say that of course
but to me, I like her because of these traits. I've read enough cute and cuddly Belles in B&B retelling to make me want someone different.

Gemma's father is anything but protective. he is a typical Society Decorum man, the "what would others say", the "I'd rather you marry someone you hate so ppl would accept you" type of father.

and then there is Gavin Aston
if you haven't figured it out yet, G Aston! get it??
he is more of an Ichabod Crane if you ask me, the scholar man looking for a traditional wife.
image:

and then there is Elliot (or is that his name?)
he's your typical grumpy gruff beast who hates humans
on the other hand, he's stuck in the human form instead of his wolf/beast form
and the best thing is that Gemma did not swoon over his hadsomestests (not a mistake) feature
he is quirky and honest
fierce and compassionate
honest and deceitful

but in one paragraph, he captured my heart, soul and mind
I've never felt so related to a character like I did with Elliot
"I was but a pup when humans were visitors on our land, and they acted accordingly. They respected my kind. Revered us, even. But as time went on, more and more humans came, and they shifted from awed visitors to determined settlers. they built homes and claimed lands that were never theirs. Tensions grew more dangerous until they resulted in the first war"

IYKYK

in short, the characters in this book are the opposite of those in the original Beauty and the Beast
and thank God for that

the story was different in the way the curse needed to be broken
the dialogue was funny and witty

this is one of the best NA fantasies I've read and highly recommend

This retelling was absolutely fantastic!! I listened to the audio version and was swept away by both the performance of the narrator and the character banter crafted by Tessonja.

So because I'm not good at writing reviews...please do bear with me.
This book was magical to me. Mainly for two reasons. The first reason being i was in a terrible reading slump after reading The Things We Leave Unfinished. For whatever reason I tend to get into these dreadful reading slumps. Especially after reading a great book. So to read this book and be instantly swept away into this beautiful retelling. Was enough for me to not only break this reading slumber, but also take me back to my reading root days. Which lead me to my second reason. The second reason was because of the writing. This author did her thing when it came to incorporating the retelling of beauty and the beast with Fae. When I tell you I was at the edge of my sit from start to finish. I didn't know what to do with myself when the book had finally came to and end. The two main characters Gemma and Elliot Rochester was ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. Gemma showed passion and courage when all the odds was against her. That includes her own family. She stood for something rather than conforming to what others thought she should be or do. She took life in her own hands. Now Elliot was a bit difficult in the beginning but the way he developed was so sweet and beautiful to watch. Especially how he treated Gemma from start to finish. Anyways because idk what else to say I love this book and highly recommend you to read!!!!!!

5/5⭐️

As always with Tessonja Odette, The Curse of the Wolf King was perfect. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairytales. She did such a good job at capturing the fairytale but also making it her own.

This book started out soo good then it went downhill!
I was bored the whole time reading it and didn’t feel any attachment to the characters!
Hopefully the other books are better!

I can’t help but note yet another thing I don’t hate about Elliot Rochester. I don’t hate his smile. In fact, it isn’t terrible at all.

beauty and the beast meets my fair lady

tessonja odette is quickly becoming one of my new fav cozy fantasy romance writers.

i did feel like it took a bit of time to get into the swing of the story, but once it was there i was invested. bookworm gemma is a jaded but determined societal outcast looking to find her own independence, and elliot is the bitter, proud fae king she must help win a human suitor to break his curse before it's too late.

“That is why fiction exists. It takes us to places we’ll never go in real life, allows us to feel emotions and experiences we might not get the chance to have ourselves.

it's quite fun to watch gemma put elliot in his place, unperturbed by his regal standing, and to watch him slowly give in and adapt to change. the connection between the two grows organically and while this wasn't quite as humorous as a rivalry of hearts for me, there were some wonderful touching moments and a bit of angst.

Maybe books are a strange form of human sorcery. For how else can a story feel so satisfying and agonizing at the same time?

overall, it was a fun retelling even for someone who isn't the biggest BATB fan. i'll definitely be continuing this standalone series for some feel good vibes!

(...) it carries everything Ive given up on—the belief that romance is true and men’s hearts aren’t fickle. A world where I’m not scorned by friends, and the people I love stand by my side. A life where I’m seen for who I am, not for who society wants me to be. The chance to be free.

Curse of the Wolf King is a Beauty and the Beast retelling set in Tessonja Odette's isle of Faerwyvae, which means this is not only a fairytale retelling, it has a fae twist.

Gemma Bellefleur is disillusioned with love and people. More than disillusioned, you could say she's lost her innocence and willingness to love, having experienced betrayal, heartbreak and society's harsh expectations and judgements towards women. She's new to Faerwyvae, and still inexperienced with its fae population, but that's okay, she's not planning to stay in cold Vernon with its old fashioned townsfolk. She's going to be free.

Enter the Wolf King who's plagued, along his remaining pack, by a deadly curse and in need of a human to break it. Tuns out Gemma wasn't the right human to attempt tricking into helping him. Or was she?

Gemma sees potential in the situation and devises a bargain that will hopefully benefit both her and the fae king, renamed Elliot, so both of them will get what they most desire: freedom. Plan to break his curse in motion, Gemma must help Elliot court a frivolous human, while fighting off the unexpected feelings she seems to be developing towards the beast king (he'd love me calling him that, okay?). She can't love him, you see, even if she really wants his curse to break, for her sacrifice would be too great: her freedom. Such a precious thing, beyond material possessions.

This is a stand-alone novel set in the same world as The Fair Isle Trilogy, which you don't need to read in order to understand this book. In fact, each book in the Entangled with Fae series can be read on its own and in any order. Isn't that great?
I do recommend The Fair Isle Trilogy, it was my highlight of 2020, and I read over 200 books.

Now that that's out of the way, let me tell you all the refreshing ways this retelling works, and all the fun things you can expect:

- Fan of fantasy romance? Fan of fae? And romancing fae? Gather round!

- Two jaded, kind of unlikeable, people meet under unusual circumstances, find a mutual understanding, grow closer and allow themselves the vulnerability and openness to change with the other's influence

- The curse turns unseelie fae into seelie, aka human form. So we are cheering for intense unrefined King "Elliot" to recuperate his beast form, instead of being free from it. If you've read the Fair Isle Trilogy you know who he is (hit me up), we want his wolfsona and wolfy grin back. Partly. Less murderous 😅

- Beauty aka Gemma isn't a prisoner, actually she is fully aware of the curse early on, and knowingly gets involved. She has an active role in her situation, and much more agenda than the original one. Also makes for a less moraly ambiguous romance

- Gemma Bellefleur, an unapologetic romance devourer. Mind you, I almost want to call her a smutt reader, for these are not innocent love stories. They are adult novels with handsome heroes, swooning heroines, heart pounding "forbidden" romance and steamy love scenes. Go Gemma, you're doing great sweetie!

- The previous point brings me to unapologetic non-chaste woman, owning her body, instead of reclusive unexperienced bookworm. Gemma has had her share of bad experiences, with love, friends, family, society. She looks in books for the escapism many of us do, but more than that, she looks for the fulfillment and happy ending she never got

- The way Gemma prepares herself before going out and dealing with the crowd, the anxiety she feels as she's triggered by past memories and they mix with the present felt very relatable

- I understand the Wolf King is prejudiced towards humans (can you blame him, they're so prejudiced and judgemental, awful to both human and fae kind), but for him to identify with his unseelie form, and not with his seelie one is completely valid. And it was important to me to see the wolves hold on to that identity, despite the deadly cost, even if Gemma doesn't completely get it. Would she willingly give up her female body and identity as a woman for eternity, just so she could live?

- Happily ever after guaranteed!

- Adorable pups

- Gavin Aston is a hilarious take on the name Gaston, in my opinion 😹 He's also a book snob, instead of an illiterate buffoon

- For those who know Faerwyvae, we get treats! Seeing some old friends, and some old non-friends, if you ever wondered what happened to them. Also, the Wolf King hasn't completely lost his habit of mockingly repeating what people say at the beginning of the book hahaha

- Doilies

- Tomato sauce and bad acting!!! 😹😹

- The ending was fun

- Is Ember Cinderella? I can't be the only one who thought of this.
At the end of the book: The next book in the Entangled with Fae series will be a Cinderella retelling that follows Ember’s love story. Stay tuned for Heart of the Raven Prince releasing July 2021!
Me: I KNEW IT!

This is an easy soft quick read meant to be enjoyable and a feel good experience. I personally couldn't rate the book higher, because I felt like I needed more interactions between Elliot and Gemma for their connection to solidify, as well as more fleshed out characterisation and character development.

*NOTE this book is upper YA/NA featuring mature situations and some adult language. The romance is slow burn but leads to moderate steam.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Curse of the Wolf King was a really fun beauty and the beast retelling.

In it, you will meet Gemma and Elliot. Now these two were very easy to like, but I might be a little bias. Mostly because Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie/retelling to read about. Heck, I like all the retellings if you really think about it.

But seriously, I loved Gemma so much. She was my spirit animal who loves to read and didn't care about gossip. Then there's Elliot, my lovable broody man. When these two were together my heart could only do one thing: swoon. Their relationship was a slow burn that felt good. I really enjoyed watching them get to know one another and then fall in love. It was bittersweet because I wanted things to happen but had to wait.

The waiting part is obviously the worst thing ever.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the villain as well. Oh, my little Gavin. I loved to dislike him and found it hilarious whenever he and Gemma were together. As for everything else? Well, it was really hard to put this book down. I'm also very excited to jump into the sequel.

Tessonja Odette could write a grocery list and I would read it.

Also the fact that I’ve read this whole world backwards is not lost on me. I started with Ember’s story, now I’ve read Gemma‘s story.

I really do love these books though. I saw a post for Heart of the raven prince on Instagram a couple of months ago and it caught my interest at a time when I was in a really bad book slump. And now I’ve bought all of the books. I HIGHLY recommend these books

I didn't feel anything, characters were plain and flat, no psychological depth nor development. I didn't care for any of them, especially the king.
The plot itself is cliché, but not well done.
