L. L. McCall's riveting novel, "AMISS," takes you on a journey of complex emotions, tangled relationships, and the blurred lines between trust and deception. Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Cold Spring Harbor, New York, this story explores Carla's struggle to find beauty amidst personal turmoil.

As the story unfolds, McCall masterfully paints a vivid picture of Carla's life, blending introspection with external events. The contrast between Carla's gorgeous beachfront property with her internal conflict is an interesting juxtaposition.

Carla's character is fleshed out through her interactions with the ensemble cast. The supporting characters, from Carla's close-knit group of friends to the enigmatic Peter, play integral roles in shaping the story’s emotional core. McCall's exploration of human emotions is subtle yet poignant, and makes you feel deeply connected to the characters' trials and triumphs.

The novel navigates the delicate balance between temptation and redemption with nuance. Carla's journey—from being drawn into a web of deception by her attraction to Peter to her eventual realization of his betrayal—is both gripping and heart-wrenching. Her inner battles, intertwined with her art and relationships, mirror the central themes of the story.

One of the novel's strengths lies in its ability to maintain tension while exploring the complexity of human relationships. The intricate web of emotions, desires, and deceptions kept me engrossed as the story encourages you to consider the uncertain boundaries between right and wrong. McCall's narrative prowess shines through the gradual unraveling of the truth, capturing the tension and urgency of the situation.

"AMISS" explores themes of identity, trust, and the multifaceted nature of love. Carla's journey from innocence to self-discovery serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of betrayal, redemption is attainable through personal growth and the support of genuine relationships. McCall's smooth prose and excellent pacing make the story unfold in a very authentic, realistic way.

In the heart of the story's emotional turmoil lies its greatest triumph—a portrayal of resilience and the unbreakable spirit of its characters. McCall's "AMISS" is a wonderful story of love, deceit, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

AMISS by the Author L.L. McCall delves into the profound themes of jealousy, rivalry and complex emotions, providing a deeper understanding of the human psyche. The story revolves around the twin brothers,Paul and Peter, who looked completely similar but when we talk about their personalities and mindset, they both possed a vastly different personality...People get jealous of you when you start achieving alot in your life but what if it's your own sibling or family member ?? By the grace of God, one of the brother Paul became a successful entrepreneur and his terms with Carla was also growing really good. All he now wanted was to marry Carla and build a life with her.. Paul never really talked too much about Peter, he traveled a lot & was not around much. Peter had no interest in getting a job, he would continue to play music gigs from town to town, here and there. While they give their best to maintain their close bonds, jealousy and rivalry begin to destroy their bond as success favors one brother over the other. Turn the pages to dive into this sibling rivalry to know what happens next in the story.. " Amiss" is an impressive novel that showcases McCall's talent for crafting a layered yet easily comprehensible piece of writing. With unexpected twists and turns peppered throughout, the book keeps readers on their toes, eagerly anticipating what lies ahead. Highly recommended. Overall, a five star read..

Riveting page turner! One of the most dangerous and chilling emotions to the human mind has to be jealousy.

In author L.L. McCall's Amiss, the author explores the concept of jealousy through the story of two twin brothers and the divide which comes between them. When a young woman named, Carla, meets twin brothers, Peter and Paul, she senses a great difference in the two young men's personalities and behaviors, and finds herself drawn more to Paul than Peter.
As their lives progress and Paul finds success in life and in love, Peter feels the rage of jealousy well up inside him. When finally it becomes too much for him, Peter sets into motion a series of events that will threaten to tear apart the bond between Paul and Carla forever, and lead to a violent confrontation that will rattle the foundation of brotherhood in the process.
The author did an incredible job of finding a great balance between the romance between Paul and Carla and the chilling nature of Peter's behavior and actions.

I just completed reading the book "Amiss." Honestly, I enjoyed reading this book.

The book has 15 chapters and each entire chapter is interconnected with a single interesting story.
I liked the way nature is described at the beginning of the chapter. Also, the simple vocabulary makes it easy to visualize while reading.

I liked the ending of the first chapter. Things went slowly and calmly. I felt a nostalgic feeling when Carla sees the cute and handsome boy on that bus.

Overall, the book has an intriguing story, but the way it is presented makes it more unique. I loved the interesting and engaging plots along with the conversations.

The characters are also very well placed in the story, also, all 15 chapters were captivating.

I would vote it 5/5!

A story with an exceptional plot.

I was amazed at how addictive and fast this story was to read; the ability McCall has to tell you so much in so few pages is incredible. The way that the author has to connect through the narrative of the distant lives of these brothers and touches on issues such as envy, ambition and greed, is what I liked. This book shows the darker side of this family and makes you read it until it ends. I recommend it 100%.

A fun romp by first-time author L.L. McCall was a quick read. Despite its brevity, it packs in young love, action, and some twists and turns. What started out sweet and tender soon took an evil turn. As a native Long Islander, I loved the mention of familiar Long Island towns.

Rating:5/5

Review:

👉L. L. McCall’s AMISS is a captivating exploration of sibling rivalry, jealousy, and ambition, masterfully delving into the complexities of family dynamics. This gripping psychological drama follows the tumultuous journey of twin brothers whose identical appearances belie their vastly different personalities and life trajectories.

👉At the heart of the story are twin brothers who, despite their physical similarities, couldn't be more different. One brother achieves great success, while the other struggles, breeding intense envy and resentment. This imbalance poisons their once-close relationship, leading the less fortunate brother down a dark path of obsession. His desire to usurp his brother’s life, including coveting his wife, sets off a chain of unpredictable and thrilling events.

👉Character development in AMISS is exceptional. McCall dives deep into the inner worlds of the brothers, making their motivations and emotional states vividly clear. The envious brother's descent into bitterness is portrayed with raw intensity, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The supporting characters are equally well-crafted, adding layers of depth and complexity to the narrative.

👉The pacing of the novel is generally well-structured, with numerous unexpected twists and turns that maintain engagement. However, some plot developments feel slightly rushed, and a few conflicts are resolved too conveniently. Despite these minor issues, the story's emotional depth and intricate plot make it a compelling read.

👉McCall’s exploration of themes such as ambition, envy, and familial love is both poignant and thought-provoking. The novel skillfully examines how unchecked jealousy can erode even the closest relationships, prompting readers to reflect on the nature of sibling bonds and the destructive power of envy.

👉Set against the picturesque backdrop of Cold Spring Harbor, New York, AMISS contrasts the serene environment with the turbulent inner lives of its characters. This setting enhances the emotional impact of the story, highlighting the stark difference between outward appearances and internal struggles.

"Amiss" by L L McCall is a gripping novel that delves into the complexities of sibling rivalry with an intensity that is both enthralling and unsettling. Set against the backdrop of familial bonds, this story explores how envy and desire can distort relationships and lead to unforeseen consequences.

The narrative centers around twin brothers who, despite sharing the same genetic makeup, are starkly different in their ambitions, successes, and moral compasses. As success comes more readily to one brother, the other finds himself consumed by jealousy—a toxic emotion that begins to erode their brotherly love. McCall masterfully portrays the psychological and emotional turmoil that ensues, capturing the reader's attention with a well-crafted plot full of twists and turns.

What makes "Amiss" particularly compelling is McCall's exploration of identity and deception. The less successful brother’s quest to usurp his twin’s life, including his professional achievements and personal relationships, is depicted with chilling clarity. The author raises profound questions about the nature of entitlement and the lengths one might go to achieve fulfillment.

The writing is sharp, with a narrative pace that keeps the pages turning. Characters are developed with depth and authenticity, making their decisions and dilemmas resonate with the reader. McCall does an excellent job of building suspense, making it nearly impossible to put the book down as the stakes grow ever higher.

I highly recommend "Amiss" to readers who enjoy psychological thrillers with rich character development and a keen insight into human motivations. This book will not only entertain but also invite you to reflect on the darker side of human desires and the potential havoc they can wreak on relationships. L L McCall has crafted a novel that is a must-read for fans of intense, character-driven stories that challenge the boundaries between right and wrong.

‘Something is amiss…’ - A fine romantic thriller

New York author L.L. McCall makes her literary debut with AMISS, a romance that involves an artistic Carla and identical twin brothers - successful entrepreneur Paul and guitar playing tuned-out Peter. The story opens at graduation time as Carla and her girlfriends encounter Paul, who ignites Carla’s spark and a sweet courtship and eventual marriage ensues. With Paul’s (and Carla’s) success at peak, Peter wanders back into their lives and Carla’s waning interest in her life is regenerated with a growing passion for her husband’s lookalike. From that point the romance becomes a thriller with surprise twists that sharing more would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say that L.L. McCall has managed to weave a striking novella, easily read in an hour or so, and suggesting that she has made a strong bow on the literary stage. Recommended

AMISS is a well-told story about twin brothers and their love interest. Being a short little volume, I was able to get through it in a really minimal amount of time. The character portrayal is beautiful and I was delighted by the tale’s ending. I am giving this book a solid five out of five stars.
