This was book 2 in the "Princess Shanyin" series this was a short quick read that I liked. Princess Shanyin had to run when her brother the Emperor dead the regime has toppled. with the aid of her two favorite concubines Shanyin escapes the palace uprising with her life and nothing else. The deposed princess is thrust from a world of privilege and power into a lawless realm where every man seeks to claim her, whether it be her former servants or the mysterious and cruel governor who pushes her to the edge of sensuality and surrender. While in hiding she is no longer a Princess and now her concubines control her in and out of bed. She is in love with the man that helped her Yuan. Shanyin flees them and does the only thing she can do she becomes a fallen woman in one of the outlying brothels. Hiding her identity so that she will not be found Shanyin must use the abilities as a woman to stay safe. But even here her fortunes fall as she is sold to the local Governor. The Princess Shanyin becomes the whore of the local Regent, under the power of the very men she once controlled. This was a pretty good read this book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I liked this, but not as much as The Obsession. There was really no enslavement, just a separation between Princess Shanyin and Yuan. She has reluctant but pleasurable encounters with her former slaves. Then runs away to join a brothel, where she does more sex, and gets sold into a mysterious household. Unlike the tea at the end of book 1, I saw this twist coming.
I love the sex-steeped characters, the writing, and Shanyin herself. She is a vibrant, memorable heroine. I might have to adjust my rating if everything comes together in book 3, but this installment raises more questions than it answers. I'm worried about the wife's toy box. Has Yuan remained faithful in his own way (and why would he, when Shanyin has not)? Her desires are fulfilled so easily by others, so I'd liked to be convinced that there is something special between them, if that's where the story is going. 3.5

This is the second novella in the Princess Shanyin series, so new readers are right in the middle of the story arc. Shanyin is stranded in the Chinese countryside with two of her former slaves who have plans in which she would play major roles, not all to her liking. So she runs away and ends up the slave of the local governor and his new wife. There is plenty of one-on-one and two-on-one action, but not much in the way of character development and I will not open a discussion regarding historical accuracy. As a hot romance novella, The Enslavement was interesting enough that I will look for #3, The Fulfillment.
We reviewed all three of these books together as a series. This review is also available at The Obsession and The Fulfillment, and our full review can be read at The Smut Report.
Heat Factor: These book goes on the Erotica shelf
Character Chemistry: There’s a cosmic connection, but I don’t always buy it
Plot: Princess Shanyin gets a hot young lord sent to her harem. Power plays (and lots of sex) ensue
Overall: If you’re looking for high-brow reverse-harem erotica with bonus disturbing political machinations set in 5th century China, The Obsession is excellent. If you want the HEA, read the full series—but note that The Enslavement and The Fulfillment are less tightly written.
Not as fun because Shanyin’s relationship with Tai and Jiyi was just ok? Still hot and kinky and I liked her exploration of who she is now and the revisiting of what the sexy times were really like during her reign
Princess Shanyin has been deposed. Her brother, the Emperor, has been assassinated and the regime has toppled. Shanyin, with two of her concubine, has fled into hiding. But she is no longer the Princess and her concubine no longer hers to control. In and out of the bedchamber, they begin to take control of her. The tables are turning and soon she becomes theirs to use.
But her mind never wanders from the man she loves. The Lord who helped the uprising against her brother. The nobleman Yuan. Who helped her escape and then abandoned her. Or did he? Shanyin learns of the betrayal of her concubine and the sense of their power over her.
Shanyin flees them and does the only thing she can do. She becomes a fallen woman in one of the outlying brothels. Hiding her identity so that she will not be found by either the new rulers or her concubine, Shanyin must use the abilities as a woman to stay safe and hidden. But even here her fortunes fall as she is sold to the local Governor. The Princess Shanyin becomes the whore of the local Regent, under the power of the very men she once controlled.
Review -
The Enslavement is book two of the Princess Shanyin series. Book One was The Obsession when Shanyin was sister to the Emporer and ruled along side her brother. It ended with the palace coup and the murder of her brother. With the help of her Lord Yuan Shanyin escapes death but is exiled into poverty and the enslavement by first, her trusted concubines, then by the brothel and finally into the house of the local Governor. Her sexual abilities the only weapon she has to fight for her life.
The Enslavement is steamy hot! It is a major flip from book one where Shanyin was in control to here, where she is used at the whim of those who she was once controlling. The sex scenes are intense and emotional. Liliana Lee has done a masterful job of rounding the character of Shanyin. Her desires and fears embodying the woman who must do anything and everything to survive.
Yet through it all she never forgets who she once was.
The Enslavement is the second book in the Princess Shanyin series. Although the book is best read in the order of the series, the author wrote this book in such a way that it's not imperative to read the first book to enjoy this one.
The Enslavement starts off where The Obsession left off, with Princess Shanyin running for her life after her brother's empire is taken over by her uncle. Now Shanyin must do anything in order to survive as a low income woman. Shanyin is a proud woman and even with her life thrown into a tailspin, she's not afraid to do what it takes to survive. This story is face paced and entertaining, with some quite steamy erotic moments that help add dimension to the storyline. A few erotic scenes in this book are a bit rougher than the previous book, but the same great ménage scenes are present and are bound to keep you drooling.
Just as with the previous book in this series, The Enslavement will throw you several curveballs throughout the story, and will keep you guessing as to what will happen next.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion*
As Princess Shanyin's brother has been assassinated and his regime topped. Shanyin has fled with two of her favored concubines. The story begins with the concubines taking control of her as she did them. However, her mind never forgets the one night she spent with Yuan, who helped her escape and then abandoned her. (or did he?)
But her mind never wanders from the man she loves. The Lord who helped the uprising against her brother. The nobleman Yuan. Who helped her escape and then abandoned her. Or did he? Shanyin learns of the betrayal of her concubine and the sense of their power over her.
Shanyin escapes the men and finds herself in a brothel. Here she is purchased by a nobleman and left at the Governors house. Several, days of being worked as a slave then she is placed in a nicer room. The mysterious Governor comes to her at night and plays her body, not allowing her to make a sound.
The book ends with Shanyin and the Governor discovering one another. I can't wait for the next book.
Ms. Lee - has a way with words and takes you back to feudal Asia. I look forward to reading more.
This story brings us deeper into a world that is full of politics and intrigue. The shift in the dynamics between the Princess and her two former slaves was interesting to see. I'm not a big fan of what she does to survive, but I can imagine that, for someone with her problems, it's probably very realistically what would have happened during those times. Yuan was not a big a presence in the beginning of this story but doesn't fail to make an appearance. I am intrigued to know the why of certain events and can't wait to read more to find out!!
Princess Shanyin’s and two of her concubines have escaped with their lives and she is learning how it feels now that her concubines take pleasure from her instead of only give it. Shanyin finally gets away from the concubines only to find herself in brothel where she is purchased as a slave. Very sexy erotic read. The story is exciting and drama filled. I am loving the series and looking forward to more.
Not as good as the first. Very much a second book of a three-book arc (you know, where it just feels like a bridge between the other two books and doesn't feel like it's own story).
This book also feels quite a bit darker than the last, but not in a bad way. Very realistic for the main character and what's happening to her.
Chapter Four had a misplaced scene that really confused me until I figured out what happened. Hopefully the author fixes that soon.
Vastly different from the first book. Hot as hell, but not a lot of plot development. I hope things come together in book 3.
This is second in a series, and felt like a bridging book. I would not recommend it as a standalone. Had I not read book 1 I would have been totally lost.
This is the middle book in the trilogy, and suffers as such. Shanyin is on the run, staying hidden with her two favorites. There are some good sex scenes here (not as hot as the first book), but the story doesn't advance smoothly. However, since it leads to the third book, it's a good read. Note that this is available as an anthology.
Yeahhh lots of typical 2nd book problems, no resolution, set up for book 3. Definitely prefer book 1. Unless the spoilers for the end of book 3 is really interesting, probably not gonna finish this trilogy.
