Kamran’s ex broke his heart, tricked him into aiding a bank robbery, and now he wants him to do one last job. There’s only one way to say no: seek the protective custody of the biggest, grumpiest FBI agent ever. And pretend to be his boyfriend for a week-long family reunion in their giant mansion. Wait, what?
Agent Lee Marshall is notoriously all work and no play. Letting a flirty, hot-as-sin playboy like Kamran wind him up is not an option. He has to protect him, not hook up with him. But pretending they’re an item for a week? That couldn’t hurt…
Kamran swore he’d never love again, but Lee will do anything to keep him out of harm’s way. Maybe there’s a teddy bear heart under the hunky FBI agent’s gruff exterior, and Kamran is the only one who can tease it out. What started out fake becomes all too real, but when Kamran’s past catches up to him, Lee must risk everything to save him.

Review Audiobook August 2021 I adored the book but I really, REALLY LOVED the audiobook. Nick Russo is doing a great job in bringing Lee and Kamran and their love for each other to life.
this was such a treat to listen to and I fell in love with Lee and Kamran all over again. I loved how the story was told and the difference between the voices was excellent done and as with my first review I loved how the relationship developed. even though it is fast but totally believable. and Gemma is just great
first review May 2021 oh, this was a great story. I absolutely adored Lee and Kamran. both characters are great and the story is really well done - although it is a classic love/lust at first sight , but very well done. the time frame it was very short but nevertheless, there was a good relationship development. Lees grandma was great, so was Mia.
I loved the storyline and how the pacing was fast but nevertheless never careless in regards of the relationships and the characters. I loved how this worked out and the epilogue was really sweet
all in all this was a great story and definitely my favorite so far in this series
Disclaimer: an ARC was given to me in exchange for an honest review
So, when a fbi agent looses his witness, he discusses it with his brother, does a Facebook search, ask one random friend of the witness if he heard from him, then goes on a wild goose chase. All alone.

Story: 2.5⭐️ Audio: 4.25⭐️
“Thin Ice” is a feel-good piece of insta-love fluff with enough odd-couple energy to give it a bit of the spice the FBI/protectee romantic suspense set-up seemed to promise but didn’t deliver. The characters are likeable and make you root for their ridiculously fast love, and there’s not a lot of unnecessary drama when the MCs express their feelings. There’s a 5⭐️ worthy scene of honesty and maturity (even in the face of provocation) that I absolutely love bc it abandons the expected Big-Misunderstanding trope while staying true to the MCs’ personalities. But while it bypasses the BM on more than one occasion, it revels in several other tropes that turns this into standard fake-relationship fare. Since I chose the book because I was hoping it would bring something new to the fake-boyfriend story, my disappointment is obvious given my rating.
Honestly, this is a millionaire/billionaire fake-boyfriend story posing as one in romantic suspense. You’ve got your sassy, impoverished club twink with the tragic gay boy backstory (whose “slutty” ways are an escape from his feelings of worthlessness and his desperate desire to be loved) who gets white-knighted by the rich guy. In this case, he happens to be an FBI agent looking for an house-husband; the obstacles to their relationship that come up are the the standard class and golddigger ones. If you’re already a fan of the series, then you’re probably familiar with and enjoy the more rom-com/buddy cop vibe of the relationship versus the more high tension tone I like in romantic suspense.
You’ll probably also give a pass to the fact that LEE is a TERRIBLE FBI agent that gets so caught up in his feels, he thinks like a boyfriend instead of a cop when trying to figure out something important and LITERALLY discards a clue. My dude actually Columbo he is not. Lee also manages to abandon his witness, leaving him in danger MORE THAN ONCE.
Also, if you’ve read the series, you may have a better take on the friends because I kinda got why Kamran didn’t think he was important in the friends group. At first they give the perfect found family protective side-eye when Lee comes looking for Kamran, but apropos of nothing and in 2 seconds flat, they assume Lee is one of Kamran’s hook-ups looking for round two and delightfully tell Lee how slutty Kam is…then they’re all ride or die during the OTT climax? Seems kind of catty and backstabby to me for more than casual friends but maybe they tell Kam what a slut he is to his face so… all good?
As for the narration, Nick J. Russo gives another solid performance, and helped me enjoy this more than I would have had I been reading. While his voice for Kamran, is not one of my favorites in his roster, it is perfect for KAM, and all the other voices are spot on as well. The story isn’t bad per se or poorly written, and I can totally see fans of insta-love, opposites attract and even just a heartwarming fake-boyfriend story enjoying it. For me, it’s just ok, but if that’s your jam, the audio is probably worth a listen.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
It is actually a toss-up between 3 and 4, so the precise rating would be 3.5 I think..
I liked that this one had a bit of action in it, however, I would say those parts could have used some more consideration. They were a bit lacking in execution, with several holes and instances where a lot could have been done differently to make more sense, but it was a nice edge to the story. The characters were awesome like always. While I was not impressed with how fast they went to love from so few interactions, they were still a hoot. Kamran was funny and cheeky, plus a bit of a jerk which made it even funnier. I liked his character and his personal growth in this story that revealed there are deeper layers to him, and he can change his ways, if he thinks it is worth it. Lee was also pretty awesome. He was this big bad-ass who is secretly a teddy bear at heart, and who can resist such allure?! I was rooting for them all the way through. They were pretty perfect for each other with the whole opposites attract thing, so I am glad they met and got their HAE. They definitely deserved it and I just love a good, happy ending.
**I was provided an ARC of this book from the GRR for an honest review**
I absolutely loved everything about this story! I’m a big fan of fake-dating and loved the way this one was handled. It was fun, romantic, had some action again and some amazing side characters! I do recommend reading these in order just because of all the side characters, however, this is probably an easier one to read as a standalone.
I wasn’t sure of Kam in the past story so I was happy we got to know him better and I loved Lee so much. Especially seeing him realize his career isn’t everything. Him and Kam just fit so well together and I loved the females in Lee’s family (not sure why but all the males sucked)!
Whether you’ve read this author or not I highly recommend this story! Would love to listen to it again as the audio was great!
Okay, so I'll be honest. There were issues in the story. Ones that would likely decrease a lot of people's enjoyment of the book and the characters. But for me, even though I saw those things, I still loved the overall story, and the men, and the ridiculousness, and the side characters, and the confessions, and the grand gesture...I enjoyed so many moments that even the missteps weren't a road block for me.
Kamren was vulnerable, sassy, and definitely not an idiot. While I do wish we got a little more of his evolution, his overcoming the insecurities and commitment hesitations, it was very clear that he did grow; he did come to accept love, change, and a whole lot of reasonable pampering.
Lee had a bit of a backbone issue and his own insecurity issues to deal with, mostly stemming from his family situation. Until he could come to terms with himself and realistic expectations he could place on both his own shoulders as well as the judgy family members, he was as stuck as Kamren in a cycle of unfulfilling life choices.
Together they found a love that, as cliche as it sounds, conquered all. The resolutions to so many of the issues were simple and quick, which I actually kind of liked because all the stuff already going on was getting a little extra so big, sappy, slightly unrealistic decisions fixing everything kind of worked for me.
So yeah, I'm not blind to quite a few things that didn't really work or make sense or weren't given enough fleshing out, but at the end of it, I just didn't care. The men just worked for me, Gamma and Mia cracked me up, the big emotional moments were suitably cheesy and wonderful, and I felt the feels.
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the dangerously flirty, somewhat enigmatic, confident and full-of-life, Kamran’s story since he was introduced in this series! Although I’m extremely sad to say goodbye to Pine Cove, I am so glad it ended with this book. It’s an absolutely gorgeous fake relationship story, and most importantly, gives our Kamran the love he deserves. My heart hurt for Kamran and how he’d hidden from love all his life because he doesn’t think he’s worth having it. You really get a deep look at the man behind the confident exterior, and it’s heartbreaking. Luckily, a kind-hearted, serious, and loyal FBI agent comes into his life to show him just how worthy he is. I adored the fierce loyalty that both Kamran and Lee showed one another, as well as all the banter, intense attraction, and a little bit of action. Kamran and Lee have one insanely fun ride!
When I first started this one, I thought “Oh, no. Rehashed tropes from the previous stories”, but once the action moved to Lee’s family mansion I was hooked. Kamran is probably my favorite character in the series, but who knew he had such a troubled past? Lee is a rock who sees Kamran’s worth and is determined to protect him both physically and emotionally. I was grinning ear to ear as Kamran was interacting with various member of the family. Kamran is Neutral Chaos personified. The fake-Boyfriend trope is used to great effect here and the angst level is surprising low despite Kamran’s low self-esteem. The epilogue was perfection. I know I have a couple of short stories left, but I’m gonna miss the crazy cast of characters from Pine Cove.
I really liked Kamran from the first time we met him, books and books ago. He's an awesome friend, and just all around nice guy. I think that he fits into the rest of the friend group we've seen through these books really well. We didn't know so much about his history, but knowing it now makes me like him more.
Lee is a good guy, if really black and white, law and order. He is also a workaholic. I think that all of those things can seriously be placed right at his dad's feet, because yeah. Kamran is really good for Lee, and I'm glad that he figures it out.
Great book, and there were times when my heart was in my throat.
I absolutely ADORE Kamran so I practically squealed with excitement when I found out he was getting his own sparkly book. While I'm sad that this is pretty much it for Pine Cove (boo!!), the series has gone out on a high because this is easily the best book in the series (hooray!!) and trust me when I say I've loved them all. Kamran and Lee are hot and I loved Mia, Sugar and Lee's Gamma - she was a hoot! This is an absolutely fantastic series that I highly recommend.
Thin Ice is a wonderful addition to the Pine Cove series. Lee and Kamran appear to be as opposite as can be. When they find themselves keeping company they realize maybe there is more there than they thought. Lee, a workaholic, and Kamran is just the guy to help him relax and enjoy life a bit more than he has been. With family, exes and life causing problems they turn to each other and sparks fly! I enjoyed this book and the entire series very much!
Thin Ice is the sixth book in the Pine Cove series by H.J. Welch. I really like this series and this book wasn't an exception. Lee and Kamran’s story was sweet, sexy and very well written. I really liked it.
Thin Ice is my first book from the Pine Cove series, which can also be read as a standalone. In fact, it was my first book by author JH Welch, which I will keep in mind. I totally enjoyed her wonderful writing style. This is easy-going and you are quite quickly in the story.
Kamran hasn't really had it easy in his life, but things threaten to escalate when the FBI suddenly shows up in the form of Agent Lee Marshal. For this calls Kamran's criminal ex-boyfriend on the scene and when Kamran's apartment is vandalized, he gets scared. So where to go? Agent Lee is the best address. Too bad that he is about to go on vacation. So Lee passes Kamran off as his current boyfriend and takes him to visit his family.
I really liked the two very different characters. Kamran is very likable and I often felt for him. Lee is hot and has his heart in the right place. However, his family is not thrilled with his new boyfriend and some confrontations ensue.
I really enjoyed the development of the fake boyfriend relationship. The differences between the two couldn't be greater, as Lee comes from a rich background while Kamran has been struggling on his own for a long time. Kamran absolutely doesn't let it get him down, though. Witnessing the family dynamics of the Marshals was just delightful.
I absolutely loved Thin Ice. The story was entertaining, romantic and exciting. The protagonists are believable and I had to grin at so many points. The story captivated me from the beginning and Thin Ice will certainly not be my last book in this series.
Nick J. Russo did a fantastic job. The narrator reads the different protagonists with a clear and deep voice and you always know who is speaking. He was a pleasure to listen to and has a talent for expressing the emotions of the protagonists, bringing the story to life. Absolutely recommended!
Kamran… oh Kamran stole my heart! This Middle Eastern dream of a man, intriguing and mysterious, has always been a bit on the hedge of the pine Cove crew, always there, but not quite all in. And now we know why! And Lee, the burly, giant sweetheart teddy bear of an FBI Agent, who has never made a relationship works because of his work being his number one priority. Except, when he meets Kamran, his only focus is to protect him, be with him, always and forever! The story is fast-paced, sweet, sexy and funny. Kamran is a ball of sass and there are a couple of hilarious family members! The book isn’t lacking action, either, because the bad guy is always lurking wanting to ruin things for our men, but the HEA is guaranteed and welcome!
SPOILER ALERT Omg this is such a gorgeous book. I’ve been waiting for this one to come out ever since I read troubled waters where Kamran was first introduced. This is the last Pine Cove book (which is so sad because I will miss these guys) and it made me so happy that Kamran gets his happy ever after. This story is so beautiful.. the writing just reels you in.. it’s so captivating and i absolutely couldn’t put the book down. The characters are so lovely. I completely fell in love with the main characters. There is Kamran who we all love.. in all the other books we see a Kamran who is confident, flirty and an absolute breath of fresh air.. and while all of that is true he is also someone who has had a hard childhood. Some one who was kicked out of home by homo phobic parents at a young age and had to cope on his own.. some one who lacks self worth.. a person whose been hurt so many times that he has trust issues. And so he stays away from relationships and hides himself behind hook ups. He doesn’t think he’s lovable or good enough. It’s heart breaking too see a broken Kamran in this book.. but luckily an FBI agent who is a mountain of A man. Who is filled with kindness, loyalty and love makes Kamran believe again. Agent Lee Marshal is an FBI agent from Seattle. His life is his work but he has taken a 10 day vacation to visit his super rich family. His mum and dad are celebrating their 40th anniversary. On his way to pine cove to meet his family Agent Marshal, is called by his boss who wants him to speak to a witness from a case that Lee has been leading for a few years. When Lee and Kamran meet for the first time the Sparks fly immediately and Kamran flirts outrageously until he realises that Lee was there in an official capacity. What ensued is that Kamran is in danger and needs witness protection and Lee gladly takes up that job. They spend the next 10 days with Lee’s super rich family by being pretend boyfriends. Omg my absolute favorite trope. It was so fascinating to see Kamran charming the socks off everyone. How he defends Lee from his homophobic brother Mikey and he’s so protective about Lee when his snobby father speaks down at him. But I also love how through it all Lee couldn’t stand it when his brother or father spoke rudely to Kamran either. Kamran for his part didn’t let anything anyone said effect him because of what life had offered him thus far. He just bounced back to the charming guy. It was so heart warming to watch them both slowly fall in love with each other.. Lee plugging in his charger was such a thoughtful thing. But what I love most is that when Lee fell for Kamran he made sure that Kamran realised that he was good enough, that he was lovable and that he deserves everything amazing life as to offer. I love how Lee made Kamran believe that he deserved a chance at happiness. That conversation just before their first kiss made me feel so much. When Lee accused Kamran asking him why he can’t accept that a person can love him for him and not just a quick hook up and Kamran says that if Lee has not noticed there was not exactly a line of people waiting for him. And then when Lee says you don’t need a line just one person. it was such a profound conversation in the book because Lee has feelings for Kamran already and he meant that one person to be him. It was heart breaking too see how deep Kamran’s trust issues went when he refused to believe that Lee wanted a relationship even though Lee kept mentioning it. Kamran kept thinking it was not anything more than physical. It was beautiful though when he slowly started believing and trusting that Lee was real and that he was not going anywhere. I loved Gammaand Mia.. that supported Kamran and Lee through out. they were such lovely characters and they brought so much light into the story. I loved their first trip to the skating rink. Where Kamran shone as bright as a star and that was the moment Lee fell in love with him. It made my heart happy that, that was their special place. I love how the pet name ‘baby’ went from a hated name to a most cherished name.. I must admit I love it when Lee calls Kamran baby. When finally the family finds out that they are not boy friends and that it was a sham, I absolutely love how supportive the family was when Lee explained his side and confessed he loved Kamran. Finally what actually stole my heart was Kamran’s absolute wonder and at the fact that Lee came for him when he was in danger.. my heart melted when Kamran says “you came for me” and he knows that Lee put himself in danger and came to rescue him in not just a official capacity but because he loved Kamran. Him knowing right there in that dangerous situation when Lee came to rescue him that he must tell Lee how he feels. And when he told Lee he loves him and Lee’s says it back, fireworks went off in my heart. When the criminals were caught, my heart filled when all his friends came running to make sure he was okay.. I love that it made him realise how much he is loved by everyone. This was so beautiful the proposal was absolutely perfect. I absolutely loved that Kamran finally believed he deserved to be spoiled and looked after. This was such a gorgeous book.. I going to reread this whole series again some time soon and visit all these gorgeous characters or I’d miss them too much.. this whole series has been glorious.. this journey as I read all the books in the series was so lovely and precious. this series has found a special place in my heart.. this was gorgeous and I rate this book the biggest 5 stars and a million kudos
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Note: This is the sixth book in this series and does contain spoilers for books 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 but it can be read as a stand alone.
We met Kamran in the previous book in this series as a colleague of Angel’s working on stunt driving for the latest movie being shot in Pine Cove. At the beginning of this story, Kamran is still living in Pine Cove. He’s scraping by in his cheap apartment on the bad side of town. He’s hoping to get more movie work and he’s got his friends. He left his life in Seattle behind after getting tangled up in something he had no idea about with a bad ex that took advantage of him. He’s never going to let anyone get close to him – they only use him and leave. He’s not worth staying for as he discovered early on in life. Hookups are fine for him – that’s all he’s really worth anyway is his MO.
But then his past shows up at Aquarium, the gay bar in town. And the rotten ex, Chaz, wants him to do a “favor” for him. Unfortunately at the same time, FBI agent Lee Marshal ALSO shows up and wants to talk to Kamran about his history with Chaz. Kamran doesn’t want to get involved and tells the agent nothing, but that isn’t good enough for Chaz who wants to make sure he keeps quiet. And he won’t stop until he gets Kamran. That leaves Kamran little choice except to reach out to the FBI agent and hope that he can keep Kamran safe. But he’s in town for a family reunion. Lee has missed too many family gatherings because of his job and he has promised he won’t miss this one. So Kamran and Lee cook up a story that Kamran is Lee’s boyfriend and so he’s joining him to meet the family.
Lee’s family is thrilled that he’s actually made it to the reunion – because he generally has begged off of such things due to his job. He’s chasing a promotion at the Bureau and this boss is always getting him to work more hanging cases and carrots in front of him. He can’t come up with another way to keep Kamran safe though, so he kills two birds with one stone 😉 Kamran poses as his boyfriend and he can keep an eye on him and keep him out of Chaz’s clutches. Some of the family isn’t quite so happy to see Lee happy though. His brother Mikey (what a D*bag that guy is) and his father in particular can’t understand why Lee insists on pursuing his FBI career. Because Lee’s family is LOADED. He honestly wouldn’t even have to work, but if he insists, why can’t he work for the family business? Lee has never had any interest in doing that and his father and brother’s treatment of him certainly don’t make it any more palatable.
Despite some of the family’s reluctance to embrace Lee’s new relationship and boyfriend, his Grandma and his niece are thrilled. Grandma in particular is a hoot. She and her little dog Sugar are totally on Lee and Kamran’s side. Mia, Lee’s niece is also a big fan of Kamran. And just beneath the surface, the simmering attraction between Kamran and Lee cannot be denied. And so their “relationship” sort of spills over into something a lot more real as the week goes by. Kamran is shocked by what a nice guy Lee is – especially given all this money! Lee is shocked that Kamran sees so little in himself. When he learns about how Kamran’s family treated him and how he came to even be involved with Chaz in the first place, his possessiveness takes over. He does his best to convince Kamran that he IS worth it and that Lee really does care about him.
Of course things can’t go easy and it seems that Chaz is not about to give up. So while Lee lets his boss manipulate him into coming back to Seattle for the day, Chaz makes the most of the opportunity to coerce Kamran into leaving Lee’s family home. Thankfully Lee has had enough and he figures out something isn’t right. Knowing that Kamran may be in danger, Lee reaches out to the group of people who might be able to help him 🙂
I really enjoyed this story! This series has been a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed Kamran and Lee’s love story. Yeah, it’s a little bit insta-lovey, but I adored both characters. Lee was dealing with a lot of external pressures from his family and job and he definitely wasn’t happy. Kamran gave the appearance of a happy go lucky playboy, but he’s really also deeply unhappy. He’s trying to fill a hole with his hookups. He doesn’t believe that he has value beyond a fun time – because he’s been told too many times that this is the case. It takes quite a bit to convince Kamran that he IS worth and deserving of love. It also takes quite a lot to convince Lee that he CAN have balance in his life – both a job that gives his satisfaction and a relationship that will give him balance and happiness. Thankfully things work out for them. I love how Lee’s family finally comes around. They start out pretty snooty, but they redeemed themselves in the end. They get by with little help from their friends 😉
Highly recommended for fans of this series also of fake boyfriends becoming real 😀
I was gifted my copy of this book, direct from the author, and I thank Ms Welch so very much!
This is book 6 in the Pine Cove series, and the last one (insert sobbing!) While it can be read as a stand alone book, personally, I would recommend you read the previous books before this one. It will give you a better picture of Pine Cove and the people who live there, and the circle of friends Kamran has come to call his family. They are all rather good too!
Kamran is still struggling to get over his ex, when he pops back up again for him to do "one last driving job" since the last one went so well! But Kamran doens't want or need that kind of strees in his life anymore. And the best protection he can find? Lee, FBI agent who is after the ex. Lee, who pushes Kamran buttons so darn hard. Lee, who cannot place Kamran in protective custody over the weekend and ends up taking him home for a massive family reunion. As his boyfriend! Piece of cake, right?
Kamran and Lee are such polar opposites, they really are and I loved them! While there is powerful attraction from both guys to the other, it does take some time for them to give in to that attraction and I loved that it was Lee who instigated that delay. Kamran would have jumped him that first night, he really would have!
Once they DO get to it, these guys burn hot and bright and so freaking much! But there is a lot of Kamran that we didn't know before, and he comes across as a playboy but all he wants, deep down, is someone to love him. Lee, too, is a deep soul but he different to Kamran, and they really do compliment each other.
Lee's family are . . snobs . . .for want of a better word, and Lee tries to warn Kamran, but the message doesn't fully get across til Kamran meets them all! Some are lovely, and take him under their wing, but Lee's brother and father are particularly unkind to Kamran. I did think that the brother might have gone on to be a really nasty piece of work, but, in all honesty, he's just an idiot who thinks he's better than every one. And as much as dad was unkind to Kamran, he DOES make up for it with an apology later.
The ex is persistant and catches Kamran with some blackmail but Lee, bless him, has the light bulb moment and realises just what Kamran means to him and goes all out to free him. And I loved that it's the same place where it all came to a head, that the epilogue takes place! Loved it!
I'm sad, really sad, that this series has come to an end, and I'm glad that ALL the previous characters pop up at some point along the course of this book. But PULEEEEEZE, Ms Welch, pretty please with a cherry on top, will you write Peyton and Ava a story?? I would love for them to have a book, even if its just an addition short you slot in somewhere. It would round this series out so beautifully.
5 full and shiny stars. I think this *might* be my favourite!
“Thin Ice” is a delightful blend of the ‘Fake Dating’ and ‘Opposites Attract’ tropes with a suspenseful plot and splash of humor.
Kamran and Lee are opposites in a lot of ways. Kamran struggled alone for a long time. It’s taken him ages to trust anyone again, especially after his mistakes put him on the wrong side of the law. Lee comes from money and a (mostly) caring family. Lee’s mistakes buried him in work and loneliness. Now, Kamran’s ex, Charles Bolt, wants Kamran’s help with a heist and isn’t taking ‘no’ for an answer. The pressure from Bolt makes helping the FBI Kamran’s only option if he wants to stay alive and out of jail. But the plan to keep Kamran safe will keep Lee and Kamran close, too close for either of them to deny the fire between them. Too bad the heat they share is melting the ice under their feet. They’re in more trouble than they imagined.
As mentioned, this story uses several tropes and familiar storytelling conventions, but the author does them well. Of course, “Faking Dating” is absolutely one of the best tropes, and blending it with “Opposites Attract” can be a lot of fun. “Thin Ice” delivers on the fun, especially when Kamran interacts with Lee’s family. There are sour and dour characters among the bunch, but most of his family is funny and sweet. Welch wove Lee and Kamran’s chemistry into all their interactions. It was great watching them struggle against their attraction. They wanted nothing to do with each other, and yet they’re drawn together. Their physical attraction is instant and their emotional attraction follows quickly as they find themselves more and more protective of each other. There is a lot of tenderness between them even when they want to deny their feelings and it’s wonderful. You can’t help but root for them.
Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot, and there’s only one downside to the novel. The nature of this romance requires a hefty willingness by the reader to suspend their disbelief. The insta-love between an FBI Agent and his witness in protective custody feels like a stretch. It’s difficult to get the balance right between the time it takes characters to act on their attraction compared to the intensity of the barriers they’re facing. Here, I felt the pacing was off. I feel this romance could’ve used to slow down the burn a little, considering the situation of the characters. Still, it’s a fun, fast read with loveable characters.
“Thin Ice” is the 6th novel in H. J. Welch’s Pine Cove series but it isn’t necessary to have read the other titles in the series to read this one. While characters from the previous installments appear, they are not intrinsic to the plot. Not knowing the characters from previous novels in the series does not hinder a reader’s ability to understand or connect with the novel. However, I’ve loved other parts of this series, and I recommend reading more by Welch!
Thin Ice Pine Cove, Book 6 By: HJ Welch Narrated by: Nick J. Russo
I loved everything about this book, from HJ Welch’s wonderful writing style to the amazing characters and storylines she created to the fabulous narration performed by Nick J. Russo. This is the sixth book set in Pine Cove, like the other books in the series it stands on its own. I am a late comer to the series since I started with the third book and as soon as I finished that book I put the first three in my wishlist and will catch up with the earlier books soon. Ms. Welch makes it easy to fall in love with her characters, and Kamran Amir and Lee Marshall are no exception. Kamran is full of personality he knows how to put on a show and hides his insecurities well. He made a huge mistake getting involved with Chaz Bolt, his now ex boyfriend. Chaz is a dirt bag who manipulates people to get what he wants. He used Kamran for his driving skills and it hurt Kamran to find this out. When Chaz approaches him with another proposition, Kamran wants nothing to do with him or his offer. Lee Marshall, an FBI agent working out of the Seattle office, he is a workaholic aiming for a promotion. He is finally taking time off to visit his family in Pine Cove when his boss calls him with a lead in a bank robbery case and the person of interest in Pine Cove. With the promotion within his reach, Lee agrees to go talk to Kamran and tracked him down in the club. Their first encounter was interesting, especially what, or rather, who Kamran was in between. Lee did not get any useful info from Kamran, but Kamran’s ex did not know that and sent a few goons to for him, he managed to escape. Fearing for his life, he felt he needed to call the big, bad FBI agent for protection. Instead of cancelling his family plans, Lee brings him along, Kamran will be safe at his family’s home and Lee can keep him close to protect him and get more info out of him. The best way for this to work is to introduce him to his family as his boyfriend. I just loved how everything played out in this book, the story is fabulously plotted with plenty of drama, a tough of angst, some humor, some twists and turns, action, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt emotions and what starts as a fake relationship turns not only real but really hot too. HJ Welch, thank you for another awesome story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 And for the exceptional narration, Nick J. Russo is perfectly casted to bring these characters and their story to life. He has a complete understanding of the characters he portrays, giving each a voice that fits that character’s persona to a tee, sounding believable and just as I picture the character to sound. He sets the perfect tone for the story, captures all the character’s emotions and projects them into his performance. Russo is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen.
I have loved the Pine Cove series with the vast array of characters that we've met and come to love, many different tropes written and all with a HEA. I'm so glad that Kamran has finally gotten his and Lee is a great match for him. Though they are opposites in pretty much every way, they work so well together. First as FBI agent Lee Marshall needs help from Kamran Amir with an ongoing case but then Kamran is in need of protection from Lee from the very man that Lee is looking for. As he's supposed to be at his family's nearby home for a vacation, Kamran tags along and plays the boyfriend role, very well and entertaining, whilst also being kept safe. Of course, their attraction to each other stops it from being purely business and things get very interesting between them when they finally give in. I love this story. It's based only on a week or so time line but nothing feels rushed. All of the drama and action of the plot plays along perfectly while the relationship that develops between the MC's slowly builds up in the time that they're together at Lee's family home (read mansion). There are both good and bad family members, my favourite being Gamma who may be the eldest but now doesn't give a damn happily giving her opinion and catching up on Drag Race. Kamran is more than happy to stand up for and defend Lee but when it comes to himself, believes the worst and Lee is the perfect man to show him that he's worth so much more. Karman's bad history with his family, his ex and watching all of his friends fall in love has left him thinking he's only worth hookups whereas Lee has talked himself into believing that he needs his job and promised promotion to be worth anything but Kamran shows him and makes him believe in why its better to have a good work/life balance. These two together tug on my heartstrings as they first pull against each other but are soon fighting to stay close together. This is definitely a romance with a dash of drama as Karman's ex/Lee's suspect doesn't stay hidden forever, soon coming out of the woodwork to get what he wants. This is such a wonderful series to read and Thin Ice is fabulous way to finish it off. Everyone involved has got their HEA and the group is a perfect example of found family and the friendships and community that come to mean to much. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
I’ve enjoyed this series tremendously and this was another great instalment. I’ve watched Kamran from afar, always wondering when he’d get his HEA. Well, it finally happened. He’s been a great supporting character and a fixture in Pine Cove. As an Uber driver, he’s managed to be in the middle of some great scenes. When we find him at the local gay bar, he’s having a good time. Until his ex shows up and it’s quickly apparent all is not well. There’s a reason why they’re exes. His jerk tricked Kamran into aiding a robbery and he wants Kamran to do one final job.
Fool me once. Kamran’s not falling for it, but when an FBI agent shows up, he’s not going that route either. He figures he can brazen it out until the bad guys come after him and he turns to the agent. The hot sexy agent. Now, it stretched credulity that an upstanding FBI agent would bring a witness to his family home and they’d pretend to be boyfriends, but this is fiction, so I suspended my disbelief.
Kamran is a sweetheart and it’s had not to love a guy who’s had so many knocks in life. Lee, the FBI agent, has been focused on work and a promised promotion for as long as he can remember. Even this visit home is a distraction he could do without. But as the family welcomes him home, and welcomes Kamran into the fold, Lee sees things differently.
Of course Kamran’s ex isn’t finished and there’s a final confrontation. But the good guys win in the end and the men get their happy ending. I loved how attentive Lee was to Kamran’s needs and I loved how Kamran softened Lee’s sharp edges. They just worked together.
I have to mention Nick Russo’s narration. He’s done a good job with this series and I always enjoy his books. It looks like this is the last full novel in the series and if that’s so, I think it ended on a high note. I highly recommend it.
I like a fake boyfriend/forced proximity story, especially with an 'opposites attract' vibe. Throw in an FBI angle and I should be as happy as a pig in the proverbial. Thin Ice is an entertaining read, but doesn't quite meet the sum of its parts for me.
The things about Thin Ice I really like are:
the main characters; Kamran is adorably screwed up by events of his past. He's snarky, but loyal to and protective of the people he values, but doesn't believe himself worthy of the same in return. Lee is driven and equally loyal and protective (though he shows it in different ways). Both men have some personal growth to do due to their circumstances and I like the way this pans out.
the family theme; Kamran has the Pine Cove found family at his back and Lee's family has a complex dynamic, but he has some great blood relatives (especially his grandmother and Mia, his niece)
there's lots of humour (Kamran and Lee's banter) mixed in with sweet moments and steamy scenes.
The things that didn't work for me are mainly:
the instalove was just too much for me in this book, to the point that I sometimes found it hard to remember how/why the MCs really connected.
I know it's romantic fiction, but there's a huge issue with a really significant plot point that's so unrealistic I can't ignore it. I won't completely spoiler this, but I'll say that even if I could suspend my belief enough to think a character as protective as Lee could act as he does in the book, there's absolutely no way an FBI field office would leave a witness in the situation Kamran finds himself in.
So, if you're a long-time fan of the Pine Cove series and are all about the steamy sweetness you'll most likely get along better than I did with Thin Ice. For me, it's an entertaining read but doesn't really reach its potential. 3*
A copy was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.
Pine Cove Book #6 Thin Ice is a generally well-written version of an often used trope and is as good as Books#1 Safe Harbour, Book #4 Bright Horizon, and Book #5 Memory Lane. Unknowing accomplice Kamran, the driver in a bank robbery where a guard is shot, is so sickened by how he has been tricked and used that he goes to a small town, far away from the gang whose leader Chaz had been his boyfriend, and hides out there for a few years, as a stunt driver on movies and otherwise an Uber driver. Chaz continues with his growing list of bank robberies, drawing more and more attention from the FBI. Kamran ends up being found by the FBI, who suspect him of being an accomplice and who offer him immunity for tying Chaz to that robbery. Having confessed the trickery (... I just need to pick something up...) he then needs to hide out under witness protection. A (gay) FBI agent, Lee, is taking ten days' family holiday close by, so Kamran hides out with them at the massive mansion nearby, posing as Lee's boyfriend. The gang leader finds him and threatens everyone he loves, all of his friends and Lee's family) unless he becomes the getaway driver again for a big haul. Chaz forces Kamran to get Lee to join them at a quiet location; many gunshots and physical violence later, the gang are captured, and what started as a fake relationship has grown into a real one, leading to our promised HEA. Along the way, Lee's aunt, and grandmother provide one-line zingers and support, with the rest of his incredibly wealthy family looking down on Kamran, cover blown, for being an Uber driver instead of his cover as a NASCAR racer, all leading to hilarity, along with some nasty bitterness (...you're nothing but a gold digger...).

I was given a free arc copy from the author and the GRR arc team for review.
M/M Opposites attract Fake boyfriend Forced proximity/one bed Bodyguard Rich/poor
This is book 6 but can be read as a standalone. I haven't read the first 3 books but I did read book 4 and 5 and I enjoyed both of those alot more than this one.
Kamran got sucked into being the getaway car in a bank robbery for his ex. He didn't know what was happening and immediately broke up with him and distanced himself. However, his ex finds him and asks him to do one more job. When Kamran says no, threats are made and he gets scared.
At the same time cops are still working hard on the case and unfortunately for Kamran he is the only one they have identified. He has a clean record and lifestyle though so they agree to give him immunity if he helps them. In return Kamran asks for a full time bodyguard. One cop in particular is going on a week long family vacation so to not tip anyone off he agrees to take Kamran with him to be his fake boyfriend.
I enjoyed the overall plot but it wasn't a page turner. Kamrans character was very likeable but I wasn't overly fond of Lee. Just when I think he's going to redeem himself, nope. For someone who is a seasoned detective he sure wasn't too bright. So many things were unrealiatic and unbelievable. I didn't really feel any chemisty between the 2 MCs. Then there's the family with it's few horrible people that just added to ruining the enjoyment of the story. This was a very low heat and medium angst read (mostly the last quarter). It might have been more enjoyable if there was more focus on them actually establishing a relationship. The drama near the end was predictable but also easily avoided.
Rating: 4.5 stars This addition to the Pine Cove world captured my attention from the beginning. The two main characters are Lee, an FBI agent on vacation (or trying to be on vacation), and Kamran, who uses his skills as an excellent car driver to make a living. The premise is a little out there: Years ago Kamran got accidentally mixed up in a crime thanks to an evil ex...that ex shows up in Pine Cove, threatens Kamran...Kamran seeks the protection of Lee, the FBI agent trying to incarcerate Kamran's evil ex...Kamran poses as Lee's boyfriend at Lee's family reunion in Pine Cove. Wait, what? Yes, you read that right. Look, I found the premise a bit incredulous and, as the book goes on, I was also rather unconvinced by the insta-love. However, if you can suspend disbelief for a while, this book is a very fun ride. From the beginning, I liked Kamran and was entertained when he crossed paths with Lee. There's a several good tropes at play here: the "bodyguard" trope, kinda, because Lee is protecting Kamran; some "opposites attract" stuff; and also a "fake boyfriend" trope as well. Lee's family is a nightmare in some ways and funny and sweet in others. The author has plenty of fun playing with the fake boyfriend scenario, keeping it entertaining. Even though I was skeptical about the short timeframe for their romance, I did think that Kamran and Lee had great chemistry and there were romantic moments woven throughout the novel that made their connection meaningful. Overall, I recommend this one. Is it a bit ridiculous? Well, yes, but it's also really fun.
