From the foreword by world-leading Lyme expert Joseph J. Burrascano, Jr., A detailed and thoughtful road map is sorely needed. And it is in this context that I am so pleased that we have this book by Dr. Kinderlehrer. I wish I’d had a book like this back in the day to guide me! It covers just about everything—the infections, diagnostic tests, treatments, and yes, the all-important terrain. It gives the reader an in-depth, but easily understandable, guide through the many subtleties of tick-borne illnesses. I am impressed with the knowledge presented and grateful for this information, which has helped so many people recover from chronic illness. To anyone touched by tick-borne diseases, be they a patient, a caregiver, loved one, or health practitioner, this book is a must-read. It will serve as a continuing reference as it gets read and reread to assimilate all it has to offer. I congratulate Dr. Kinderlehrer and thank him for this most impressive work. The ultimate guide to recognizing, coping with, and overcoming chronic infection.Lyme Disease is a substantial problem. While the CDC reported 427,000 new cases in 2017 based on surveillance criteria, actual numbers based on clinical diagnosis put that number at over one million. It is now well accepted that 10 to 20 percent of these cases go on to become a chronic illness, and these numbers don't even include those people who became chronically ill without ever witnessing a tick attachment or a bulls-eye rash. In other words, hundreds of thousands of people develop a chronic illness every year. This is why Dr. Dan Kinderlehrer’s book is so important and timely and has the potential to help millions who are victims of this epidemic. His integrative approach offers the most up-to-date and comprehensive plan available for treating and beating this disease. It will discuss brand new treatments such as disulfiram, which is being hailed as a major breakthrough, as well as the use of cannabis to treat pain and anxiety, among other developments in the field. With the staggering growth we are seeing in numbers of people afflicted, this book becomes more important every day. Kinderhlehrer is in a unique position to write this book. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine in 1979, he opened one of the first practices in the US in what was then called Holistic Medicine. After becoming an expert in nutrition and environmental illness, he became ill himself with Lyme disease complex. His long road to recovery has given him insights into what patients are going through; his background in internal medicine trained him to understand the complexities of his multi-systemic illness; his knowledge of environmental illness has enabled him to evaluate immune dysregulation; and his study of energetic medicine, spiritual alignment, and healing from trauma has yielded insights into how to help patients shift their belief systems to being well. Recovery from Lyme Disease is by far the most thorough book available on Lyme Disease Complex. It will provide patients with information that will guide them on their healing journeys, as well as supplying doctors with instruction on appropriate diagnosis and treatment approaches.
Extremely informative and a must-read for anyone who has or has had Lyme. The information on co-infections was particularly useful for me. I think it will be nearly impossible for someone in an urban setting, or outside of places with frequent Lyme cases, to find a Lyme-literate doctor. That was my experience at least. I had to turn into my own advocate and fight to get the proper tests (I was proven correct - if only my doctors had listened to me it would have saved me many weeks of misery) and I still could not get the robust treatment recommended by Dr. Kinderlehrer. If you suspect (or even know) that you have a tick-borne illness, you need to arm yourself with real knowledge, information and a strategy to get better. You can't count on the medical personnel you encounter to know enough, or care enough, to treat you properly on their own. The myths surrounding Lyme are many - and most often coming out of the mouths of people who are supposed to be treating you. This book is a great resource for facts. At times it may be almost too scientific in its explanations - but at least I knew this was not some woo-woo nonsense being peddled by a reality tv celebrity or the like. This is the real deal.
Very thorough and informative. A good place to start if you’re curious. I’m really curious to see how/if the discussion/treatment of Lyme disease changes in the next decade.
Lyme disease is a chronic and difficult-to-diagnose disease that affects millions of people, some that have no idea they even have it. Recovery from Lyme disease is a very meticulous and slow process that takes many trials and errors before finding the specific treatment for each person. I can only imagine how frustrating this process can be for people suffering from this horrendous disease.
According to the Infection Disease Society of America, Lyme disease has reached epidemic proportions, but they also say it is easily diagnosed and treated with antibiotics. I would disagree with the latter portion of this statement. A close family friend and young mom has suffered from untreatable illness for many years and was only just recently diagnosed with Lyme disease after suffering through years of pain and unsuccessful treatments. There are many doctors who also disagree and say Lyme disease can easily be missed which then results in debilitating illness and infections.
As you can imagine, there is still a lot to learn about Lyme disease and how it affects our body systems. Dr. Kinderlehrer begins by taking a look at the various ways Lyme disease can present itself after the first interaction with a tick. The difficulties are that it isn’t always straight-forward. Everyone can have different reactions and therefore the treatment needs to be catered to that particular person and reaction. He also takes time to debunk numerous myths, even ones that I regularly hear, about ticks and Lyme disease. For example, if you don’t recall getting a tick bite, you probably don’t have Lyme disease. Not everyone realizes when they have been bitten by a tick. Some never know.
Even though this book seems daunting and medical, it isn’t. Dr. Kinderlehrer explains everything in laymen’s terms and when it gets technical, he creates tables to explain things more clearly. Every chapter also ends with “Take-Home Points” as a way to refresh what you have just learned. Even though I don’t have much of a reason to learn about Lyme disease, I found this book to be quite informative and fascinating. I believe it would be quite helpful to those suffering from this disease as well as those who are in the patient’s circle of family and friends.
I found the section titled, “It’s All Connected” to be interesting and helpful in learning about how your bodily systems all work together and rely on each other. No matter what kind of illness you are struggling with, this section can be helpful in connecting the dots.
Chapter 20, “Diet and Nutrition” was a chapter that both set off alarms and encouraged me. Sugar, alcohol, and caffeine are the three most addictive foods that get into your bloodstream the fastest and the foods you should avoid if you are being treated for Lyme disease, or frankly, for any disease. But, it also offered a list of supplements to take and several of the ones listed I have been taking regularly like Magnesium and Vitamin D. Since Lyme disease is an inflammatory disease, taking anti-inflammatories, like Curcumin, Boswellia, and CBD can be helpful.
For those suffering from Lyme disease or that think they may have symptoms, this book offers comprehensive information ranging from symptoms to diagnosis to treatment, with numerous options. The research is meticulous but the explanations are approachable and understandable. This book should be in the hands of everyone suffering from Lyme disease which is why I’ll be passing my copy on to my family friend. I hope it leads her in the right direction and offers her some advice for her symptoms.
This is an excellent reference guide about Lyme disease, from what causes it to the possible treatments. It is very thorough and a must have reference guide for anyone's library.
This is a must read if you have, or suspect you have, tick borne infections. Dr. Kinderlehrer takes an extremely comprehensive look at "Lyme disease complex" and how it is truly "the body in chaos". He addresses the many factors that must be addressed to heal and takes a whole human approach in treatment recommendations.
A great reference. Accessible, easy to read, and easy to refer back to specific topics. The stories about real patients’ experiences were much appreciated.
