What Bug Am I? A Funny, Educational Story about Backyard Bugs. Bug Book for Kids with Insect Facts.

If your kids are interested in bugs, they’ll definitely buzz with laughs and literacy over this engaging, informative, and science (STEM) book.
This funny bug-story offers interesting and kid-friendly facts about insects’ diverse features and their unique ways of life.

The little spider doesn't initially know who he is. Yet with the ladybug's help, he meets different backyard bugs to understand who he looks like. By merging nonfiction and fiction, the author cleverly soars and scores in this nature book!

DO INSECTS SCARE YOUR CHILDREN?

Fizzle the fear factor associated with bugs with this amazing book. All characters are cute and relatable, without evoking fear or disgust. They’re specifically endowed with human traits and emotions; and at the same time, the structure of their bodies is realistic. The book teaches friendship, benevolence, compassion, empathy, self-care, and cooperation.

It positively shows insects, indicates their role in nature and benefits to humans, and demonstrates how to purge young readers’ fears associated with them.

Besides, each character within the book has its own info-spread with large photos and interesting facts that even adults don't know. At the same time, the book isn’t too scientific and isn’t overloaded with information. Fictional and educational spreads follow each other cohesively and creatively. They’re separated so it's easy to skip educational ones for younger kids.

Adorable educational book!

What Bug am I? by Skye Wade is so cute! The illustrations are totally adorable! A "bug" is unsure as to the kind of bug he is. So a Ladybug helps him navigate through to different bugs, all with different aspects that are the same as the little bug but end up finding differences too. After each bug, there is shown a picture of a real bug and information about that bug such as what they eat, what eats them, and how long they live.
It takes a while before he finds out what he really is. It really is a very cute and informative book that I believe kids will want to look at again and again. Having had four boys, I know the importance of finding a book that the adult enjoys to look at as much as the child since it may be a book you may read multiple times, sometimes in one day!

An outstanding book for youngsters! It’s the perfect combination of learning and fun.

The book is structured around a Little Bug who doesn’t seem to know who he is. When he encounters a Ladybug and explains his predicament, Ladybug decides to help him out. They approach various insects around them, searching a clue that would help identify who Little Bug is.

This story is presented on every alternate page. In between, there is informative content about actual photos of the bug they just approached, along with some interesting trivia about it. Thus you have the story on a page, the trivia on the next page, then a page where the story continues with a new bug, next comes trivia about this bug, and so on.

I loved the structure on the trivia page. The information is so neatly organised. I especially liked the section that looks like a row of buttons with simple tags of ‘Run’, ‘Walk’, ‘Crawl’, ‘Fly’, and so on. Whatever is applicable to that particular insect is highlighted and the other buttons are greyed out. It’s a simple yet impactful visual aid to convey information on the insect’s movements. The photos of the insects are superb in their clarity and detail.

The story section is also amazing. There are some tough words such as ‘midges’ and ‘aphids’, but overall, the content is quite manageable for a child as most of it is explained elaborately. The illustrations are simply adorable. They are so rich and vibrant, with the colours popping out from every corner.

This book will be a fun way of teaching children (and even adults) about insects. With the perfect balance of fiction and facts, it makes the encyclopaedic content very appealing to its little readers. Definitely recommended to schools and libraries, and also to little bug lovers at home. This is one bug book guaranteed not to make you go “Ewwww!” (Well, for most of the pages anyway. 😉)

5 creepy-crawly stars.

My thanks to author Skye Wade and BookSirens for the ARC of “What Bug Am I?” (Bug Books for Children: Book 1.) This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Perfect for kids afraid of insects

I read this to my 5-year-old grandson, who is very afraid of insects and wants to kill them all, no matter what I’ve said. The book pictures and explains the specialness of many of the backyard ones. He asked me, when we were done, “How did Jesus figure out all that?” He’s even looking forward to watching Brood X cicadas soon. We’ll see about that. But backyard insects should be safe now.

What Bug Am I? by Skye Wade was quite a bit different than I expected it to be. While it is primarily fantasy with animal and insect characters, it also borders on nonfiction in the way bug facts are presented.

A little (newborn? but not a larvae lol) bug doesn't know what kind of bug he is. He approaches a ladybug to ask if he's like her. She goes over her features and they determine that he's definitely not a ladybug. The next page contains ladybug photos and facts about how ladybugs move, what they eat, and a few fun facts. The unidentified bug goes with the ladybug to talk to all the other bugs, but the little bug cannot find anyone who's enough like him.

This book would be a good introduction to bugs for younger kids, and it would be fun to guess along with the unidentified bug and ladybug whether or not that bug species is a match. Students with more experience with bugs may also be able to identify what species they are looking for in terms of the unidentified bug, and for that reason you may need to be wary using this one in a classroom because of kids who may give away spoilers, especially for younger children. There is quite a bit of text per page, so this may need to be read in chunks, especially with younger students and/or as a read-aloud, because it is a little difficult to concentrate on both the story and the facts. I guess it would depend on age, reading and listening ability, and the purpose for using this text.

I read this as an ebook, and the page formatting for that is a little confusing. I'd be interested to know if the hard copy has the story and facts as a double-page spread. This is definitely a book I would like to read and maybe acquire in print format as well.

As a child, I loved bugs! I found this book both delightful and educational. The characters were sweet and welcoming. I think every child would adore them. I found the illustrations endearing and fun. All the bugs looked cuddly and approachable rather than scary.

I found myself giggling as I read the story. The illustrations helped me vividly imagine these ‘bug meetings.’ I liked how the bugs compared themselves to the spider as the story moved along. This format helped us learn more about each bug in the process.

I really enjoyed the information pages. They are kind of like a poster or flashcard. This helps keep all the information about each bug separate and easy to review. I think that these pages would make it easy to teach children about the facts of bugs. They would be good learning tools in an elementary school for studying about bugs. I learned a great deal as I read the fact sheets. I was surprised about who ate who and how long each bug lived.

I find the format of using fiction and non-fiction together a good combination for enjoyment linked with education. Afterall, children learn best when they are having fun!

I enjoyed reading this book immensely. I can see myself reading the book to all the preschool and elementary school child I’m around. This would also be a good prelude to a walk in the park to look for the bugs that we read about.

As a side note, when my daughter was in preschool, she captured a caterpillar. She put it is an open aquarium and observed its life cycle. When it turned into a butterfly, she named and released it. it was an endearing memory that lives on.

I received this advanced reader’s copy for free from Book Sirens and the author. This is a voluntary review, and all comments and opinions are entirely my own.

Amazing concept for a book🐞 it’s both fiction and non fiction and the author did a wonderful job finding a balance between the two. After each 2 page spread, you’ll will find a few real life images and interesting facts about the insects in the story.

It follows a baby spider who isn’t quite sure what kind of bug he is. He befriends a lady bug and she doesn’t know either, so the two set off on a mission to figure this out. They come across a range of different bugs like ants, caterpillars, locusts and moths to name a few. Each time they meet a new insect the reader learns something interesting about each bug. Eventually they meet an old spider and she confirms that he is indeed a baby spider. She offers him some great advice and he happily sets off to create a home for himself 😃

I love the combination of fiction and nonfiction. It’s balanced perfectly and broke the story up in just the right way. I read it with my first graders and they liked it so much, they requested we read it again so we read it twice over🤩

Of course from a teacher’s point of view I’m always looking for books like this as they’re an invaluable tool for teaching. Especially if you can find something loaded with educational content that’s still entertaining (it’s hard to find actually)

This book is part of a series including several other books and hopefully more on the way. I hope the author continues to build on this series and follows this formula because it’s a winner 🏆 I’m a huge fan now!

Highly recommend checking this out, the world needs more books like this!!

Little Bug was stretching his legs.
A ladybug introduced herself to him. Nope you’re not like me.
They went to an ant hill. Nope not an ant.
The spied some earthworms, Little Bug didn’t resemble them or a caterpillar.
The kind locust said, defiantly not like me.

Will Little Bug figure out what he looks like when he grows up?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary age) bug storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation (overcoming insect scare), movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

What Bug am I? is a well-written book. It uniquely teaches STEM. It combines nonfiction and fiction. It a cute and funny book. You learn about many different bugs while to find out what this new bug is trying to find out what he is.

You get some real facts about different bugs throughout the book. Those you get a funny story about the bug looking for someone like him. It like he just does not know who he is. Children will learn all about the different bugs. This is a neat idea and a clever way to teach children.

The pictures are well done and enjoyable. I was somewhat creeped out about the real pictures of some of the bugs. But not creeped out where I closed the book, the look of them had me wanting to turn the page. It is really good for all kinds of children that can learn about bugs and other things. If you are what STEM means well I will put the explanation in for you below.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach.

Parents will want this for their children if you like bugs or some teachable moment about nature. We get to learn about nature and the different bugs we have in our backyard and house. These kinds of books are enjoyable for young readers and school-age children. I love children's books and sometimes learning about the different bugs or learning something new about bugs I knew about them.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I’ve read some good children’s books lately, and this is another one to add to the list!

When a little spider pops out of his egg, he doesn’t know what kind of bug he is. Ladybug is nearby, and she takes it upon herself to help him figure out what kind of bug he is. They meet an ant, an earthworm, caterpillar, locust, bee, dragonfly, rolly polly, a moth, and finally, a spider. He finally finds out he’s a spider (not a bug at all) and where he’s supposed to live!

The characters are sweet, and bugs are seen as nice and helpful rather than scary. The illustrations of the bugs are bright, colorful, and cute. The best part of the book for me was the spread about each bug after they found out what it was. Each one shows pictures of the actual bug, what they like to eat, what likes to eat them, how long they live, and other interesting tidbits. I learned a lot!

If you’re looking for educational but fun books, this is definitely one you should get.

I loved this book! Even as an adult, I got super excited about all of the fun science facts. I love how the author incorporates the story (in the style of Are You My Mother?) along with facts. The story was funny, interesting, and educational. The photos and facts about bugs were useful. I like the fiction / non-fiction combination. I like the characters, although some of the bugs were kind of dismissive toward the spider, which hurt my feelings lol. The choice of insects is engaging and appropriate. The illustrations are cute. I think that this book could interest a child anywhere from 2yo to maybe 3rd grade. The book teaches children self-exploration: what kind of mammal are you? What makes you different from other creatures or people? I would definitely give this book to other boy moms. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Cute as can be!

What a darling way to introduce young kids to insects! Full of cute illustrations and deductive reasoning, this book is packed with facts. The only issue I have is that it says spiders sting. But I thoroughly love this book that paints what most would find unsavory in such a wonderful light! And it includes a garden spider which are my absolute favorite! Start your young one off on their entomology career today.

A great blend of cute and informative!

I read What Bug Am I to my 3 year old granddaughter and she loved it, we've read it twice already! The illustrations are very colorful and the insects cute and cuddly. The pages with information about each bug were accurate and a great addition to the story. I can't wait to see what other stories this author comes up with!

Sweet educational story with wonderful illustrations. Your child will be introduced to ladybugs, ants, earthworms, etc. I thought earthworms weren't bugs but, although worms aren't insects, they are are in the class Oligochaeta. A bit confusing perhaps.

Cute yet educational

Incredible book with educational value! I loved it! As an adult, even I was engaged with the story. I knew he was a spider, but young children might not. This serves as a great educational tool. I highly recommend!
