This very informative Defending Everybody by Diane Garey is the history of the American Civil Liberties Union. Diane Garey vividly tells the fascinating stories of some of many, amazingly diverse Americans- whose civil liberties were defended since 1920. She also shows how these struggles have secured greater freedom for everyone in this country.
ACLU fight the government whenever it attempts to regulate speech.
It was an honor to read then write a review for Defending Everybody!
What made reading and writing a review for Defending Everybody an all time high is not only because I am a card toting ACLU member, I was personally given Defending Everybody by the sitting ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) president during the ACLU’s 2013 annual meeting!
Defending Everybody! touched on historical events that I wasn’t aware of and reminded me of those events I’d forgotten! The foremost thing I learned from Defending Everybody is how I must remain vigilant in remembering that not everything is about me, especially when it comes to the human and civil rights of others. I must always remember my disagreeing with the point-of-view of others does not mean that others should be denied due process in Court. And, if I truly embrace democracy, I must stand tall with ACLU’s decision to represent Everybody! After all, when all is said and done, my denying others their human and civil rights does nothing but put my human and civil rights in jeopardy because there are always those out there just waiting to take all of our human and civil rights from us.
Defending Everybody! is about ACLU’s role in History to get governments, politicians, corporations, political organizations, etc., to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights!
Defending Everybody! won’t be a great read for those who refuse to or who can’t embrace democracy for Everybody!
If you’re over sixty, you’ll remember much of the History mentioned in Defending Everybody! because you’ve lived through it!
